.....’small change big difference’ On many seminars and talks that I give around the UK many people tell me that they had never really considered going ‘green’, reducing the synthetic chemicals in their lives and taking some responsibility for their own health and wellbeing until a new baby came along and reminded them of their contribution to the planet, and the need to leave some of it behind for future generations to enjoy! Of course if you’d said the words ‘Green living’ and ‘Recycling’ to a guy in the 1940’s he’d have assumed you meant trimming the lawn, and getting back on his bike after a fall, yet he would have been a deeper shade of green than even the most ardent eco warrior can claim, partly because there simply wasn’t the overuse of packaging, the pesticides and the ‘disposable’ attitude to everything. My take on all of this as the author of a series of books on holistic living is that it’s now so easy to go green and natural without needing to make sacrifices. My particular interest is in beauty and skincare and this area has grown tremendously as you’ll see from this issue of The Book of Green. A recent Mintel report showed a rise in spending on organic skincare products of 40 per cent in two years and with the wealth of choice now in ethical sustainable companies that looks set to grow. Of course we know that no one bottle of shampoo, body lotion or indeed laundry detergent will increase your risk of having respiratory illnesses, allergies, or cancer but I genuinely do believe that the cumulative effect of the thousands of synthetic chemicals we encounter on a daily basis in our everyday household products almost certainly will aid in compromising the immune system and potentially lead to further problems, not to mention their impact on the environment. This book presents the good news that there is now a 100 per cent eco and sustainable alternative to just about everything from the car you choose to drive (or the bicycle!) the shoes, accessories and fashion items you wear, the skincare and food you buy, and not to mention the choice of energy you use. Many of the companies and services in this directory were started out of a real desire to create change, it’s that ‘small change big difference approach’ and their commitment to sustainability and ethical practice is heart warming, they deserve our support !

The Woodland House by Ben Law
Foreword By Kevin McCloud (Channel 4’s Grand Designs) Ben Law is an extraordinary man. Not exactly a warrior for his cause, more the quiet victor. Ben has proved that it’s possible to make a good living as an underwoodsman – coppicing, hurdle making and charcoal burning, simply by working hard and applying good commercial business sense. He’s also proved that it’s possible to design and construct an elegant, sophisticated and truly environmentally-friendly home from materials around you, providing you design with diligence and sensitivity. And he has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that great architecture need not be urban, or glamorous or loud. I first met Ben when filming the third series of Grand Designs for Channel 4. We followed over a year the steady, measured construction of his house and watched coppiced chestnut being willed into a new form as a dwelling. It was clear then that because of Ben’s highly unusual planning circumstances and the exceptional nature of his job and skills that came with it, we were witnessing something rare; an event in building that doesn’t happen at all often. And in the three years since, we have not been able to find a project with the equivalent integrity of man, material and design. I suspect we won’t for a long time. Sustainable is a word that in the last few years has become almost meaningless. It’s now so overworn a word, it’s become so floppy you can take it and stuff it with whatever you like: organic straw; urethane foam insulation or just hot air. Whenever I need to remind myself what the word really means, I think of Ben’s house and how we managed to make a film about sustainable construction whilst mentioning the word just once. Here is a house so ecologically sound, it breathes in time to the trees around it. Nearly every bit of wood in the place (and it is nigh all wood) grew in that forest and was coppiced. The subsequent coppice stumps or stools are now regrowing so fast and gulping in their youth so much carbon dioxide, that within a few years the environmental impact of constructing and living in this building will have been more than outweighed. Putting it into hard environmental language, this, in carbon terms, is an invisible house. But it mustn’t remain too invisible because it’s also a beautiful house and one that answers eloquently to its setting. Ben has a shrewd eye for design, proportion and the subtleties of colour and materials. Organic farming has come of age, enough to be attacked in a cloak and dagger way by such bodies as the British Food Standards Agency (FSA), who last year concluded that organic food ‘conveys no health benefits’. Their report was based on extremely selective evidence: It did not even look at levels of pesticide contamination. Also it ignored a major European study started six years ago, funded by the European Commission and called Quality Low Input Food (QLIF), who have shown that organic food production methods result in “(a) higher levels of nutritionally desirable compounds (e.g., vitamins/antioxidants and poly-unsaturated fatty acids such as CLA and omega-3) and (b) lower levels of nutritionally undesirable compounds such as heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticide residues and glyco-alkaloids in a range of crops and/or milk. In the case of milk, nutritionally desirable compounds are up to 70% higher in organic samples”.

We can do even better when growing our own vegetables. Soil that is well looked after with plenty of compost, plants that are grown in season and at their natural speed (no surfeit of water or fertiliser), and freshly harvested so that most vitamins are preserved, will result in platefuls of nutritious and extremely tasty food. Salad leaves are the easiest and most bountiful vegetable to grow in small spaces, even containers. A few seasonal salad plants, looked after by careful harvesting of outer leaves, can give harvests over many months.

Rubbish Needn’t be a Dirty Word! I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand people bleating on, moaning and nagging us to be greener! I think people are likely to take positive steps in the right direction, if they understand processes like recycling a little better. Here’s a peek at the humble pop-can and plastic bottle. We recycled 3.5bn aluminium cans last year, but could have done better. The story is the same with steel, in fact UK steel cans contain only 25% recyclate; European ones have up to 54%. At the recycling centre, cans are separated from other materials, often by-hand to begin with, then magnets segregate them into different metal types. Aluminium ones are shredded, squashed into blocks, thrown into a furnace and heated to 750 deg C. Moulton metal is tipped out to form thin sheets, it’s cooled by a fountain of water then rolled up into enormous reels, ready to turn back into cans and other things. The whole process takes around 6 weeks. The plastic bottle tells another grubby tale and you might be shocked to learn we Brits get through a staggering 15m of them, every day! They start their journey being sorted, again, often by-hand then by machine. They’re cleaned and sorted further via infa-red scanner which splits them into colour and type. They’re shredded, melted and turned into little pellets, the basic ingredient for reforming it into another bottle or product. There are increasing numbers of recycling-bins available in public areas to deposit cans and bottles, but if you can’t find one while you’re out and about, take them home and spare a thought for the ‘by-handers’ - give recycling a rinse! Let’s raise a glass to taking more personal responsibility and going the extra mile, ensuring cans and bottles end up in a purposeful final destination! ....International Car Free Day Transport systems have significant impacts on the environment, accounting for between 20% and 25% of world energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions from transport are increasing at a faster rate than any other energy consuming sector. From 16 to 22 September 2010 the European Mobility Week is an opportunity for European cities and towns to participate in a widespread event, with “Travel Smarter, Live Better� as its focal theme. The European Mobility Week is a campaign to raise awareness of the use of public transport, cycling, walking and encouraging European cities to promote these modes of transport as well as invest in the necessary infrastructures. The week culminates on 22nd September 2010 with International Car Free Day. This is an opportunity to find other ways to get around town. Leave the car at home and walk, take a bus, train or cycle around town. Over half of all car journeys are less than 5 miles. This campaign aims to highlight the pollution caused by cars, not just the fumes but also the waste, excess noise, not to mention the frustration of delayed journeys caused by traffic congestion.
