FOUNDATIONS FOR MODEL-BASED SYSTEMS ENGINEERING: FROM PATTERNS TO MODELS
NEW FOR
2016
NEW
Jon Holt, Simon Perry and Mike Brownsword
The practice of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is becoming more widely adopted in industry, academia and commerce and as the use of modelling matures in the real world, so the need increases for more guidance on how to model effectively and efficiently. This practical book describes a number of systems-level ‘patterns’ that may be applied using the systems modelling language SysML for the development of any number of different applications and as the foundations for a system model. This is a companion volume to both SysML for Systems Engineering: a model-based approach and Model-based Requirements Engineering, both published by the IET. Whereas the previous volumes presented the case for modelling and provided an indepth overview of SysML, this book focusses on a set of ‘patterns’ as the basis of an MBSE model and their use in today’s systems engineering community.

TRUSTED PLATFORM MODULES: WHY, WHEN AND HOW TO USE THEM
NEW FOR
2016
NEW
Ariel Segall
Trusted Computing is an emerging technology which will reportedly make computers safer, less prone to viruses and malware, and thus more reliable from an end-user perspective. Chip manufacturers Intel and AMD, hardware manufacturers such as Dell, and operating system providers such as Microsoft, all plan to include Trusted Computing in future products. Government departments including the US Army and Department of Defense now also require that every new PC it purchases must come with a Trusted Platform Module (TPM). This practical introduction aims to debunk the myths around TPMs and trusted computing. It focuses on the main uses for TPMs and includes practical considerations such as when they should and shouldn’t be used, and the advantages of using them. It demonstrates, through real-world case studies and worked examples, how they can be used to substantially improve platform and network security.

RECENT TRENDS IN SLIDING MODE CONTROL NEW
Jean-Pierre Barbot, Franck Plestan and Leonid Fridman
NEW FOR
2016
In control theory, sliding mode control (SMC) is a nonlinear control method that alters the dynamics of a nonlinear system by application of a discontinuous control signal that forces the system to “slide” along a cross-section of the system’s normal behaviour. This book describes recent advances in the theory, properties, methods and applications of SMC, including a discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of different SMC algorithms; a new Lyapunov based approach for design of such controllers; gain adaptation for arbitrary order sliding mode control; new methods for design of arbitrary order sliding mode surfaces; and new applications in air breathing hypersonic vehicles, electro-pneumatic actuators, wind-energy conversion systems, and control of electrical machines with saturation. With contributions from an international team of experts in the area this is essential reading for researchers and students in control theory and its applications.

Victor Sreeram, Peter Benner, Lixian Zhang, Abdul Ghafoor, Xin Du, Minh Ha Binh and Xianwei Li
Deriving a reasonable mathematical model is fundamental to the analysis, design and control of a dynamic system. The most important factor in model-reduction procedures is approximation error. Sometimes, this reduction error is more important over a certain frequency band than other frequencies, and taking account of this has led to the development of frequency weightings in the model-reduction procedure. This book will describe this technique and outline major applications. Topics covered include: an introduction to model reduction and frequency weighted model reduction problems; mathematical methods used in various model reduction techniques; methods for linear systems; computational techniques; balanced realization based methods for both continuous and discrete systems; stability and passivity preserving techniques; single-sided and double-sided frequency weighted reduction problems; frequency weighted Hankel singular values and Enns techniques; limited frequency interval controllability and observability Gramians for continuous and discrete systems and model reduction approaches based on these Gramians; and practical application examples. This will be essential reading for researchers in system control, modelling and signal processing. It will also be of interest to graduates in the field.

HIGHER ORDER TECHNIQUES IN COMPUTATIONAL ELECTROMAGNETICS Roberto D. Graglia and Andrew F. Peterson
Higher Order Techniques in Computational Electromagnetics explains “high-order” techniques that can significantly improve the accuracy, computational cost, and reliability of computational techniques for high-frequency electromagnetics, such as antennas, microwave devices and radar scattering applications. It presents high order basis function, explains their use, and illustrates their performance. The specific basis functions are developed, and it includes scalar and vector functions for equations such as the vector Helmholtz equation and the electric field integral equation. The book first considers the approximation of scalar functions, and explores the error in some of those representations. Singular functions (those that are unbounded) are also considered, since these often arise in practical EM problems. 2015 Hardback • 408pp ISBN: 978-1-61353-016-0 Product code: SBEW5070 £47 • $79
This book also discusses the approximation of vector functions, and summarizes the various classes of vector basis functions used by the professional community. Following this, higher order basis functions is presented for the most common cell shapes used in finite element analysis procedures. Finally, considerations are made of some of the implementation details associated with the use of these functions for integral equation/method of moments formulations and differential equation/finite element method approaches.

COGENERATION AND DISTRICT ENERGY SYSTEMS: MODELLING, ANALYSIS AND OPTIMIZATION SYSTEMS
NEW
Marc Rosen and Seama Koohi-Fayegh
The advantages of district energy systems over conventional heating and cooling systems include improved efficiency, reliability and safety, reduced environmental impact, and for many situations they are more economical. They can be particularly beneficial when integrated with combined heat and power (CHP) plants, i.e. with cogeneration plants for electricity and heat. One of the main impediments to increased use of cogeneration based district energy systems is a lack of understanding of the behaviour of integrated forms of such systems. This important book covers district energy and CHP technologies, as well as systems that combine them. It focuses on modelling, analysis and optimization, of cogeneration-based district energy systems. The modelling includes characterizing the general configurations and components of cogeneration and direct energy systems, and the development, verification and validation, of models for such systems. The analysis focuses on the application of thermodynamic analysis, and economic assessment techniques, to these systems. The optimization covers the identification of objective functions and constraints, and the development and application of optimization tools and computer code. This comprehensive overview of existing systems provides an essential resource for engineers and researchers in a broad area including mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, energy engineering, environmental engineering, process engineering and industrial engineering. It will also be of value to advanced undergraduate or graduate students in these disciplines.

This book brings together chapters on the state-of-the-art in machine learning (ML) as it applies to the development of patient-centred technologies, with a special emphasis on “big data” and mobile data. With contributions from international experts from prestigious institutions it describes cutting edge research and makes accessible, for the first time, the latest in Bayesian non-parametrics for healthcare. This is one of the key frontiers in ML, and its application to healthcare will serve as a useful tutorial guide for both ML-focussed and biomedical engineers. There are very few books that are accessible in this key area of ML, and absolutely none on the use of such technologies for mobile healthcare – despite a substantial amount of research that has taken place in this field at key biomedical and clinical sites across the world. Topics covered include an introduction to machine learning in healthcare; discovering trends in patient physiology; Bayesian time-series analysis for patient monitoring; mobile healthcare for the developing world; massively-multiscale machine learning for healthcare; time-series clustering for understanding patient data; machine learning for home healthcare; fusing genomics and healthcare data; machine learning for mental health; mobile healthcare with analysis-on-a-chip; Bayesian analytics for medical data fusion. This is an important book for academic and industrial researchers working in healthcare technologies, biomedical engineering and machine learning. It will also be of interest to advanced students working in these areas and commercial developers of computingbased healthcare applications.

Vol 1. Devices and modelling
NEW FOR
2016
Editors: Saraju P Mohanty and Ashok Srivastava
The demand for ever smaller and more portable electronic devices has driven metal oxide semiconductor-based (CMOS) technology to its physical limit with the smallest possible feature sizes. This presents various size-related problems such as high power leakage, low-reliability, and thermal effects, and is a limit on further miniaturisation. To enable even smaller electronics, various nano-devices including carbon nanotube transistors, graphene transistors, tunnel transistors and memristors (collectively called post-CMOS devices) are emerging that could replace the traditional and ubiquitous silicon transistor. Over two volumes this work describes the modelling, design, and implementation of nano-scaled CMOS electronics, and the new generation of post-CMOS devices, at both the device and circuit levels.

PHOTONIC INTEGRATED CIRCUITS: INTEGRATION PLATFORMS, BUILDING BLOCKS AND DESIGN RULES
NEW
Martijn Heck, Pascual Muñoz and Guillermo Carpintero
A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) can be seen as a ‘light-based’ analogue of an electronic circuit (i.e. where functionality occurs by manipulation of light rather than electrical current). Much research has gone into this area and this well-organised book sheds light on the technology behind PICs and the capabilities of the various platforms available. It provides an engineering approach to photonic integration technologies from the fundamental concepts, through to assembly issues and the integration strategies to combine different components in a single chip. Photonic Integrated Circuits is the only book to provide comprehensive coverage of all three main platforms: PLC/silica/doped glass, silicon-on-insulator, and indium phosphide. It focusses on the available libraries of commercially available optical components, and is based on close collaboration with the suppliers of these technologies. It also includes application examples, describing how PICs are being used in real world scenarios which provide engineers with a feel of what the technology is capable of. Topics covered include: an introduction to photonic integration technologies and circuits; wave-guiding; passive components including optical couplers, optical filtering, and integrated mirrors; lasers and amplifiers; modulators; photodetectors; photonic integrated circuit design; the PLC/silica/doped glass platform; the silicon-on-insulator platform; the indium phosphide platform; hybrid and heterogeneous integration. This book will be essential reading for photonic circuit designers in industry and academia. Postgraduate students in electrical engineering, and PhD students in the field of photonics and telecommunications will find it useful. This is also an important text for research engineers in industry who want to understand the potential of applying this technology to their field, and physicists who want to transfer their optical and photonic technologies out of the laboratory.

ENERGY SYSTEMS FOR ELECTRIC AND HYBRID VEHICLES
NEW FOR
NEW
Editor: K. T. Chau
The book provides thorough coverage of energy systems for electric and hybrid vehicles with a focus on the three main energy system technologies – energy sources, battery charging and vehicle-to-grid systems. Energy sources includes electrochemical energy sources, electromechanical energy storage, hybrid energy sources, on-board solar energy harvesting, on-board thermoelectric energy recovery, and battery management. Battery charging technology ranges from the existing charging strategies to the latest wireless charging techniques for park-and-charge and move-and-charge. Vehicle-to-grid technology covers interdisciplinary topics which link electric vehicles, information technology and power systems for management of energy systems, power interfaces and service scheduling.

HISTORY OF TECHNOLOGY
The IET also publishes a range of titles on the remarkable characters, and outstanding events, which have laid the foundations for developments in engineering and technology over the years.
BUSES, BANKERS & THE BEER OF REVENGE: AN ECCENTRIC ENGINEER COLLECTION Justin Pollard
A collection of fifty stories, from Greek computers to aircraft carriers made of ice, taken from three years of musings from the author’s Eccentric Engineer column. Since the autumn of 2007 Justin Pollard’s Eccentric Engineer column, in the award-winning E&T magazine, has been campaigning to remind engineers of the extraordinary role that their subject has played in human history.
2012 Hardback • 128pp ISBN: 978-1-84919-581-2 Product code: PBSP0500
This book highlights, not simply the most famous engineering tales, but the unusual, the erratic, and occasionally, the patently insane. In its fifty stories readers can toy with Roman turbines and Greek computers, look at Renaissance hypertext and have arguments with Americans over the shape of our lightning conductors. But most of all they can celebrate the joys and perils of living in an engineered world. Justin Pollard is a historian, author of nine books, and one of the writers for the BBC show, QI. He has contributed to many different movies, from Elizabeth, and the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, to Pirates of the Caribbean.

ELECTRICAL REGULATIONS
BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations) sets the standards for electrical installation in the UK and many other countries. The IET co-publishes the Regulations with the British Standards Institution (BSI) and is the authority on electrical installation. Amendment 3 to BS 7671:2008 (17th Edition IET Wiring Regulations) was published in January 2015 and came into effect in July 2015 (with one regulation held back until January 2016). The IET’s range of expert supporting guidance around BS 7671 has also been updated to Amendment 3 and can be found across the next few pages. The IET publishes the only guidance to be peer-reviewed and approved by industry.

ELECTRICAL MODEL FORMREGULATIONS OF GENERAL CONDITIONS OF CONTRACT
Model Form of Contract for the design, supply and installation of electrical, electronic and mechanical plant The IET’s model form of contract (more commonly known as MF/1) is a key industry template for the supply and installation of electrical, electronic, or mechanical plant. Used by the engineering community for over 100 years, this highly regarded and well-developed form can be customised for a specific purpose and has been adapted to be applicable internationally.
MODEL FORM OF CONTRACT for the design, supply and installation of electrical, electronic and mechanical plant MF/1 (Revision 6) ■
accommodates the views of purchasers, engineers and the manufacturing industry, resulting in a fair balance between Contractor and Purchaser
The 2014 edition maintains the original principles of this lump-sum contract, and this latest revision has had a thorough review by an expert panel. The changes include the following:
■
provides flexibility for the parties by providing ‘Special Conditions’ for particular requirements
■
■
includes a suggested model form of SubContract, suitable for use where the Main Contract is subject to MF/1 Conditions
simplified language throughout the document – every clause has been altered to improve the readability of the document, using less antiquated and legalistic language, and making the meaning of each clause much clearer
■
provides a range of additional model contract documents, such as a Variation Order, a Taking-Over Certificate, a Notice of Delegation of Authority, Forms of Tender, of Defects Liability Demand Guarantee, of Performance Bond and a Form of Demand Bond
■
most of the optional forms have been revised/moved and re-numbered and the layout improved to aid completion
■
the payment provisions (clauses 39 and 40) have been more comprehensively revised to reflect common modern practice
■
