MAP KEY JR shinkansen lines (high-speed lines) are used by bullet trains: Hayabusa, Hayate etc. Some high-speed lines (Akita, Yamagata etc.) are also used by local trains. A higher supplement is payable for travel by all trains. JR line (main line) shown as principal regional routes (heavy black lines) may have limited express train services. JR line (secondary line) are other regional routes (lighter black lines) for local trains. Basically there are no regular limited express train services. Third-sector line, private line, tram and cable car (shown in purple) are non-JR lines. Some JR passes may be available on several third-sector lines at no additional charge. Subways are basically shown in line colors. Lines under constriction (dotted red or black lines) are shown where the construction had already started. Lines shown with service suspended (gray lines) may have closed for a long time. Basically rail replacement bus services are operated. Scenic routes (shown in green) are the editor’s personal choice. Types of scenery are usually coastal, river, lake, forest, gorge or mountain landscapes. Bus routes (shown in orange) have been shown selectively for tourists. The Japan Rail Pass is available for local JR Bus lines (shown in black digits) and BRT (bus rapid transit) lines. Reservation are required for some long-distance highway or intercity buses. Demand-responsive transport (dotted orange lines) are operated by local bus or taxi companies. Several routes operate only on weekdays. Compulsory reservation by phone or their of cial websites.
FEATURES Point of interest is usually related to a tourist attraction, point of view, museum, park, garden, temple, shrine, church, michi-no-eki (roadside station), brewery, market etc. Onsen means hot spring. In Hokkaido, the bathing fee for the koshu-yokujo (public bathhouse) is about ¥450. Many onsen hotels, ryokan and minshuku are also open for higaeri nyuyoku (day-use entry) from ¥500 to ¥1500 per person. If you are looking for the facilities of day-use entry, ‘Higaeri nyuyoku wa dekimasuka?’ is the most useful phrase any onsen accommodation. Ski area may of which are found in mountain areas. Major ski areas offer equipment rentals, lessons and public transport. The top season is usually from late December to late March. Rent-a-cycle (bicycle rental) can be hired from the tourist of ces or bike shops in and around the train station, bus stop or airport. Bicycles are usually doable from May to October.
