Hokkaido Shinkansen

Opened in 2016, this shinkansen (bullet train) connects Honshu with Southern Hokkaido, passing through the 53km-long Seikan Tunnel under the Tsugaru Strait. The line of cially starts at Shin-Aomori, but the most shinkansen pass directly through from Tokyo. You spend ten of minutes in the long tunnels feel like a subway. The major jumping-off point is Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, where many travelers head for the romantic port town of Hakodate. Asahikawa is a good base for Daisetsuzan National Park, the home of great ridges, alpine bogs and deep gorges in Hokkaido. From Asahikawa Station, bus 66 runs to Asahidake Onsen (1hr 40min. ¥1450). From where, Asahi-dake Ropeway (Return ¥3200 Jun-20 Oct/¥2200 21 Oct-May. asahidake.hokkaido.jp) o ers breaking views over the mountains. An hour loop hiking trail heads from its top station to Sugatami-no-ike crater pond at a smoking volcano. During the warmer months, you can climbing to Hokkaido’s highest peak of Asahi-dake (2291m) in about two hours. From Asahi-dake, allow ve hours to reach Kuro-dake (1984m) near Sounkyo. It is an easy day trip or overnighter from Asahikawa.

Kamikawa is a transit point en route to Sounkyo in the northern part of Daisetsuzan National Park. The station area has excellent ramen shops and well-priced izakaya.

Shin-Asahikawa (3.7km) is the of cial start of the JR Sekihoku Line, but all pass directly through from Asahikawa. The line turns east and follows the upper stream of Ishikari-gawa.

An ordinary ticket cost between Asahikawa and Abashiri on the JR Sekihoku Line is ¥5070 (valid for 3-day and stopovers are available). The following is a suggested itinerary from Asahikawa to Abashiri on a budget, passes through Sounkyo on Route 39. Total transport cost is approximately ¥5830. DAY 1 Leave Asahikawa; morning local train to Kamikawa (¥1070. 68min); bus to Sounkyo (30min); hiking Kuro-dake or explore along the gorge; stay in Sounkyo Onsen.

DAY 2 Intercity bus to Kitami (2hrs); visit the Mint Memorial Museum; local train to Abashiri (1hr. ¥1070).

Just after Kamikoshi signal station (68.6km), the train passes through the 4329m-long Sekihoku Tunnel (completed in 1931) on Kitami-toge Pass and enters Okhotsk Region. 105.6km

Maruseppu 丸瀬布 Train bu s may be worth a visit to the forest park Ikoi-no-Mori. An old steam locomotive for a forest railroad (date from 1928), the Amemiya 21 chug the short distance on weekends from late April to late October (Open 10am-4.30pm. ¥500). The park has a campsite, folklore museum and onsen. From the station, there are three buses (7.15am, 12.05pm, 4pm) daily to the park (¥270). The train runs along Yubetsu-gawa.

Engaru 遠軽 The JR Sekihoku Line turns southwest at Hokkaido’s only reversing station in Engaru, where there is a few minutes stop. Look out for the 78m-high giant rock of Ganbo-iwa near the station. At the foot of the rock, Engaru Local Museum (1-2-5 Nishi-machi. Open 9am-5pm Tue-Sun. ¥160) has a collection of old railway photos, tickets and station boards. See Directory 4
