LIEVE BRUYNINX is a psychologist and an experienced behavioural therapist who has been working with Accept ance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) since 2006. YVONNE
In this book, ACT is reconnected to its roots in behavioural therapy as well as with important core concepts from Relational Frame Theory (RFT). With increasing frequency, (behavioural) therapists and coaches who work with ACT base their interventions on a standardized version of ACT. As a result of this standardization, the order and the form of the treatment sometimes become more important than the function they (should) have for the client. By focusing instead on clients’ personal context, and asking how they see themselves and their lives, it’s easier to change course quickly when clients don’t respond to metaphors or exercises as expected. This book provides you with scientifically grounded core concepts and with the components of the hexaflex, considered in a practical manner, interspersed with real-life examples and exercises intended both for therapists on their own and together with clients. ACT with Head and Heart is intended both for those who are new to ACT, as well as for those who are more advanced. No prerequisite knowledge of ACT or RFT is needed.

In Bite Me, Femke Buwalda shows us that diet culture has notably disrupted our relationship with food and with our bodies. We’ve taught ourselves to no longer listen to internal signals, such as hunger and saturation, and instead, to move from one diet to the next, while our self-esteem is at rock bottom. But your body doesn’t need to change, as the relation ship between weight and health is not as clear-cut as has always been assumed. Through intuitive eating and Acceptance and Commitment Theory (ACT), you’ll experience more freedom and peace around both food and your body, because you’ll be able to let go of rigid rules and instead be led by your own

“Living in an oversized body means being locked in an unending battle against both yourself and the world. And that’s why this book is such a breath of fresh air. It’s not about becoming skinny. It’s not even about becoming healthy. It’s about something far more important: the end of that battle.” – Asha ten Broeke, writer, columnist, science journalist

Brain Fitness
Not knowing where you’ve left your keys, forgetting an appointment, not being able to do two things at once or simply having one of those days when everything goes wrong. These things happen to each and every one of us. They only become an issue once they occur frequently and impair our everyday functioning.
NOËLLE KAMMINGA is a healthcare psychologist and neuroscientist (PhD in neuroscience) who works at the Maastricht University Medical Center departments of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology. She specializes in the interplay between the body and the brain, and is founder of PPEP4ALL: a self-management program for the chronically ill and their partners.
Brain Fitness provides us with clear explanations of cognitive issues, and provides skills and strategies for dealing with these issues. It’s possible to create alternative pathways in your brain through extensive practice – and the first step in doing so is to get insight in your cognitive functioning. After helping you gain this insight, the book will guide you through exercises related to attention, focus, memory, and/or executive functioning. It concludes with a section on the influ ences of stress, exhaustion, and pain on cognitive functioning. This book is intended for anyone who suffers from cognitive impairments or is scared of suffering from them eventually.
It’s also intended for anyone who wishes to exercise their brain and is going for a “fit” brain.
“You can keep your brain in shape and train, to build stamina for later. You’re building backup generators in your brain.”

Besides being a parent himself, Guy Bosmans, developmental psychologist, family therapist, and scientist, also is a frequent witness to the pain both parents and children experience at finding themselves stranded in the same conflicts time and again. In his book, Bosmans leads parents back to the basics: the need to care and the need to be cared for. He shows us what is at play below the surface that makes achieving those things we actually want (affection, warmth, and safety) seem impossible. Step by step, he helps the parent, together with their child, find their way back to one another.
“Even if the relationship between you and your child has been a struggle for a while, you can always find your way back to one another. It’s not hopeless.”
Satnav for Families
GUY BOSMANS is professor of clinical developmental psychology at KU Leuven. He is a clinical psychologist, renowned behavioural therapist and academic chair of the courses “behavioural therapy for children and adolescents” and “Attachment-Based Family Therapy”.
A Roadmap for a Close-Knit Relationship with Your Child Guy Bosmans
As parents, we’re full of good intentions when it comes to our children. We want an open and warm connection, we want to both protect our children and to let them go as well so they are ready to face the world on their own. Parents have a strong, basic need to provide care. Reversely, our children have a basic need to be cared for. That’s a well set-up situation, one would think. So how come we nevertheless frequently lose our way in the relationship and the communication with our children?

Over and over again you try to maintain an (intimate) relationship, but it just doesn’t work out. Or you think a certain “lost soul” will get attached to you, but it seems incapable of attachment. Whatever bestselling books on love and relationships may claim, whatever psychotherapists may promise, some people just don’t get attached to others.

coach,
This book pulls you out of the murky waters of insecure attachment and contradictory emotions, and offers you a lifeline to prevent you from being pulled under. “Don’t listen to your feelings, let reason lead you,” is the core message of the method presented here. You can learn to compensate for an attachment impairment by consciously choosing to take the risk of trusting others. Impossible Attachments was written for people who get in their own way because they can’t maintain relationships. But it is also intended for the ones who keep trying with those who have trouble attaching and for healthcare professionals who believe “not being attached” can be cured.
A psychological toolkit passed down from father to son
Derek de Beurs & Paul de Beurs
DEREK DE BEURS graduated in Clinical Psychology and works as Chief Science Officer and head of the Department of Epidemiology at the Trimbos Institute, the Dutch national institute for mental healthcare, substance disorder treatment, and social work.
Seven out of ten: “good enough” is good enough!
In Seven out of ten: ‘good enough’ is good enough! Derek and his father Paul, a retired psychiatrist, discuss the sayings that Paul most frequently used while working with his patients, since the suggestions he gave them turn out to be really valuable for people who aren’t in therapy too. In a sense, they form a toolkit for daily life. Through case histories and scientific findings, Derek and Paul explore why certain sayings worked so well. In the process, they also learn more about each other as father and son.
Seven out of ten: “good enough” is good enough! is a down-to-earth, practical book that’s funny and has substance, offering useful tools for carrying out psychological DIY – not only on yourself but also on your relationships with your partner, friends, co-workers, bosses and family.
PAUL DE BEURS worked as a psychiatrist for more than 30 years and held various positions within the field of mental health care and in general hospitals. Before his retirement, he also had his own home-based private practice.

The Dutch saying “Life is a seven”, meaning that life scores seven out of ten, teaches you that you can be content with your life as it is but still not lose the ambition to strive for better.
This book is an interesting read for anyone who wonders how we, as people, function, for anyone who is interested in the amazing and vulnerable structure that is our brain. Additionally, it can be a source of solace, recognition, and hope for the (loved ones of) the ever-increasing group of people living with acquired brain injuries.

“Then, suddenly out of nowhere, she has the feeling the world around her is changing, shifting. All at once, everything seems made of plastic. Looking at her own hands, she might as well be an avatar. Not blue, like in the movies, but fake.”
In Mr Prins eleven clinical neuropsychologists discuss “that one patient”. The patient who struck a chord, who stayed with them, who astonished them or taught them something about resilience. The story of Lizzy, whose world seems made of plastic; of Anja, for whom words lose all meaning; of Mr Pietersen, who is needlessly worried about dementia; and of Mr Prins, whose worries are justified. It presents a colorful collective of people who are fighting for their lives, learning to live with a disability, out of necessity reconciling themselves with an inevitable ending, who show themselves in all their resilience.

Less Meds
Cutting down on medication is not an easy feat. How gradual should the decrease be? What are the risks? How do you prevent withdrawal symptoms and relapse?
Cutting down on psychiatric medication: a hard pill to swallow Remke van Staveren
In Less Meds, psychiatrist Remke van Staveren states that it is of extreme importance to consume as little medication as possible, for as little time as possible – but she is by no means arguing in favor of total abstinence. Psychiatric medication can bring rapid relief for symptoms of psychological distress, and is sometimes downright life-saving. Pills don’t actually solve problems however, while they do have myriad side-effects and can be harmful in the long run. Which is why taking as little meds as possible is of such great importance.
This book provides a step-by-step guide to get out of this cycle of negative thinking. Through tasks and exercises, and real-life examples, the reader learns to create a nuanced image of themselves. The author, Manja de Neef, is an expert when it comes to self-image. She understands like no other how difficult it is to fight against an existing negative self-image. Negative Self-Image is a warm and comforting book for people who are too hard on themselves.
People with a negative self-image are continuously putting themselves down. Compliments don’t land, but criticisms all the more so. Though from the outside it’s often hard to tell, on the inside they’re convinced they’re worthless, irrelevant, or stupid. This negative self-image is not without consequence: it can lead people to do things they would rather not do, to develop depression or anxiety, or to be fearful of taking important new steps.
The self-help book Negative Self-Image has helped tens of thousands of people build a positive self-image, step by step.
“A negative self-image (…) can feel like a difficult but familiar friend, who it’s hard to let go of – but it is possible. Even if the changes you make are small, they’ll lead to new experiences, positive experiences. And those will help you feel better about Rightsyourself.”sold:

Many people find it easier to describe themselves using negative words. Is that bad? Yes. Because words matter.
MANJA DE NEEF specializes in treating self-image problems and worked for many years as a behavioural therapist/ psychotherapist. These days she finds time to write, to teach workshops, and to give lectures. She’s also involved in the development of e-health programs. Her book Negative Self-Image sold over 50.000 copies.
How do you respond to a compliment? Do you just accept it, or do you quietly discard it as impossible to believe? How often do you end the day lamenting all the things you didn’t do?
Would you describe yourself as worthwhile, as important, as good enough? Or is it easier to describe yourself as chaotic, worrisome, impatient or inattentive?
