Ecstasy About the God Helmet and other religious experiments Some believers literally hear the voice of God, while others lose their sense of time and space during meditation or discover a higher state of consciousness by taking mind-expanding drugs. Where do these religious and spiritual experiences come from? Do they really provide a glimpse into another reality? Are some people more predisposed to these types of experiences than others? In Ecstasy, Michiel van Elk draws on the latest scientific research to address these and other questions. Van Elk, himself a scientist and former believer, discusses field research conducted at paranormal conventions and in church communities as well as experiments that he and colleagues have performed, including the God Helmet experiment at the Lowlands music festival. As we come to find out, man has a deeply ingrained propensity to experience religion – a propensity that provides all kinds of advantages.

Us - Them On narcissism and polarisation in society? Politicians like Donald Trump have a polarising effect on society. They exhibit a typical narcissistic trait: putting their own interests first and leaving no room for others. They emphasise the importance of Us by pitting Us against Them. In this book, narcissism expert Martin Appelo shows how our society is being threatened on two sides by narcissism and narcissistic rage. On the one side, you have the ‘Privileged’ who think they can do anything they want to do, and on the other side you have the ‘Outsiders’, such as the ‘lone wolves’, who respond with acts of terrorism. More and more often, this conflict between the Privileged and the Outsiders is taking place against the backdrop of the general public. The big question raised by this book is how this will all end… Are we heading for a narcissistic apocalypse or is the power and influence of ‘normal’ people trying to steer a middle course strong enough to avert catastrophe?
MARTIN APPELO
is a healthcare psycholo-
gist, cognitive behavioural therapist and expert in the area of narcissism. He is the successful author of many books, including the bestseller Een spiegel voor narcisten [‘A mirror for narcissists’] (2013), in which he describes the destructive tendencies of narcissists.

Frozen by fear How sexual abuse affects you Why didn’t I scream? Why didn’t I resist? Why didn’t I tell anyone? Why did I do what I was told to do? Why did I keep going back? Many female – and male – victims of sexual abuse struggle with these questions and are too ashamed to speak out, even to friends and social workers. In the taboo-breaking book Frozen by fear, Agnes van Minnen explains exactly which instinctive survival responses (freezing, fleeing, fighting or avoidance) can arise during and after sexual abuse. Learning about these survival responses, which serve a genuine function, can often be a great relief to victims and help facilitate the coping process. It also helps to break the cycle of abuse and reduce the risk of recurrence. This accessible book dispels myths and provides readers with a wealth of explanations, tips, and insightful anecdotes.
AGNES VAN MINNEN is a clinical psycholo-
gist and expert in ptsd /trauma and fear who has treated hundreds of victims of sexual abuse. She holds a professorship at Radboud University.

The inner criticism of eating problems On the way to self-acceptance If you have problems related to food or your weight, or if you have an eating disorder, you most likely have critical thoughts about yourself, your body and your eating behaviour. These critical thoughts or voices can be quite harsh and become even worse the more strict you are on yourself and the more you try to lose weight. Eventually, they can impact all aspects of how you think and act. In this book, you learn what gives rise to these critical thoughts about yourself, your body and your eating behaviour, but more importantly how you can build up more of a resistance to them. By means of various exercises, you learn to recognise these critical thoughts, question their validity and distance yourself more and more from them. The ultimate result is a positive image of yourself and your body.

Imperfectly content Dealing with your inner critic Many of us have an inner critic that is never satisfied. “What I said during the meeting made no sense at all...”, “I forgot to congratulate him again. I’m such a ...” Can’t we just turn off this voice? The simple answer is ‘no’: feelings of shame and guilt serve an important function. They ensure that we stay within the boundaries of socially acceptable behaviour. At the same time, however, this voice can have a negative impact if it becomes too strong. This isn’t solved by just telling yourself to stop ‘being so hard on yourself’. Thankfully it is possible to change: you can learn to deal with your inner critic by learning to understand yourself better. In Imperfectly content, you use various tests to gain more insight into your tendency to experience constant feelings of guilt and shame and how adequately or inadequately you deal with these feelings. By looking at yourself from the perspective of a sympathetic observer, you can learn to accept that you are indeed not perfect, but that you can be content with being ‘good enough’.

Growing up too soon On parentification Excessive loyalty on the part of a child towards a parent and the blurring of the lines that separate the child’s role and the parent’s role occur more often than we think. But is it by definition a bad thing when it occurs? Growing up too soon is about children who care for their parents – a phenomenon called ‘parentification’ – and the expectations parents have of their children. It is a book that provides practical tips as well as emotional support. Examples are used to describe what parentification is and how it manifests itself. Various high-risk groups, such as the children of divorced parents and the children of parents with a psychological condition, are handled in detail to explain how family issues can lead to parentification. Marinka Kamphuis discusses the damage this can cause to children, the specific problems that can arise during childhood or later in life and what can be done about them.
‘A useful and reader-friendly overview of this issue for caregivers and parents.’

Stop worrying We all worry about things – some of us even worry about the fact that we are worrying. This practical book will help you to put your concerns into perspective and teach you to cope with stressful situations. Using exercises from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), designed to understand the nature and seriousness of your worrying, Kerkhof shows you how to stop the cycle of worrying. By spending 15 minutes, twice a day, to do the exercises, you will learn to take control of your repetitive thoughts. By integrating humour into the exercises, Kerkhof encourages you to face and deal with your worries. Supporting and offering advice to worriers as well as their family and friends, this book also provides guidance for professionals working in mental healthcare settings, especially those who recommend selfhelp to their clients.
