A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Natalie

It’s not just a website and a magazine, it’s a place for modern parents to hang out, read, shop, learn and connect. I’m delighted to welcome you to this place which I have worked my butt off to create!

not just balancing work and kids, but pursuing their dreams, building something they are proud of, and sharing the fruits of their labour with others. WWW.BOOMBALO.COM is global, natch, but we wanted to pack this inaugural issue with lots of things Vancouver (as well as the bigger world), to shine a light on the incredible talent and ability that lives here.

During the time I was building this place, I gave birth to my two boys, one of whom has dietary challenges which add a fair bit of work to his care and feeding. So I get it that juggling multiple priorities is a modern day challenge for us all. Because I was having kids while building my dream, what you’ll find in these pages is a celebration of others who do it too –

Every day brings a new opportunity to meet yet another fantastic individual, chasing a dream, influencing others, or bringing great new products to the kid market. I look forward to hearing from many more of you in the months to come so we can continue to showcase your fabulousness!

WELCOME TO BOOMBALOO!

It’s been a busy labour with others to bring this place to reality and now that it’s here I can’t wait to share it with you. , ZLVK \RX DOO WKH YHU\ EHVW WKLV KROLGD\ VHDVRQ KDV WR RŐ HU SHDFH SURVSHULW\ KDSSLQHVV DQG PRVW RI DOO ORYH )URP P\ IDPLO\ WR \RXUV +DSS\ +ROLGD\V

AN EXCLUSIVE Q&A SESSION WITH

Monika Hibbs

It takes a lot of courage and hard work to go to Medical School. It also takes a lot of courage to walk away once you know it’s just not for you. Monika Hibbs’ husband encouraged her to start a blog to blow off steam from the pressure cooker of medicine and the rest is, well, history! Unlike many celebrity bloggers, Monika’s style ideas and products are affordable and realistic. She responds to all inquiries and messages, which is probably why her followers are so loyal. Those who have worked with her say her heart is huge and always available to support others in their quest to follow their own dreams.

What’s the one big thing you’ve learned about yourself when you became a mom?

I’ve learned that I can have an ample amount of patience. It is a choice, not something that just comes to you. The strength of patience while learning to be a mom goes a long way. I’m amazed at what my little guy has taught me in this area. The way he wants to discover every aspect of life and yet is so fragile has brought an extra sense of calmness and peace over me. 1/ Be consistent, whatever it is you are doing. Create a routine. We are creatures of habit and love to know what’s next.

8/ Start paying close attention to baby’s tired signals. Eye rubbing, ear pulling, arm thwacking, and yawning. I have a three-yawn rule; by the third yawn it’s time to go down.

7/

2/ The less vices the better. Soothers, bouncy chairs on vibrate, your Meile vacuum cleaner, running in the baby’s room all night. Or worse…YOU! These are all quick fix solutions with very little longevity. A sound machine with white noise is a fantastic tool, (just make sure it runs all night) and a great swaddle or sleep sac might do the trick.

Make that room BLACK! If you are still night feeding, use your phone as a flashlight, it works wonders. Night lights are for toddlers.

4/

ARE YOU READY FOR A NEW SLEEP ROUTINE? 5/

Put your baby down awake. I know this can be difficult at times, (especially cause they’re so cuddly) but it’s best for everyone. Imagine going to sleep in one place and waking up in another, (the movie “The Hangover” comes to mind) this creates confusion and anxiety. This also creates a vice; you, meaning, they need you to fall asleep. Encouraging baby to be an independent sleeper is a great start for healthy sleep habits.

20 | BOOMBALOO MAGAZINE

3/

Less is more. Go easy on the stuffed animals (one lovey is plenty), mobiles, toys and lights. Could you sleep in a Led Zepplin light show, probably not, so let’s create a calm environment.

10 tips to create healthy sleep IRU FKLOGUHQ

6/

When you need to feed or change baby at night it is not playtime. This is business. It should be quiet and dark and there should be as little interaction as possible.

Remember you are an amazing parent, and you are doing a great job, don’t let the over eager unhelpful people in your life make you feel differently. And yes, it’s normal to feel completely overwhelmed! Your baby didn’t arrive at your door with a “How To Guide”.

K L I K P H O T O G R AP H Y

9/ Get Dad involved. Your baby can smell your milk! It’s yummy and they want it. Let dad go in and do the nighttime soothing, or put baby to bed. It’s a great bonding time for them. Dads like feeling important too.

10/ Always trust your gut! You know your baby better than anyone else. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it! Crying it out for 3 hours while you listen to Katy Perry on your iPod, and feeling like a terrible parent, is not going to create a good vibe for anyone. Some people find this works for them, but most find it traumatizing. Create an emotional balance. If you are stressing so are they. Calm yourself and leave your emotions at the door.

Besides a lack in the market for this type of Multi-Use Bib,

what inspired you to venture out and become a Mompreneur?

A: I knew it had to be soft and organic. Before I had Charlotte I

remembered when I would shop for baby gifts with my mom and

she would always deeply inspect the clothing to make sure it was incredibly soft with no hidden scratchy bits lingering on the inside of the garment. I held that memory when I was designing the bib and blanket. Super soft, no velcro, no fasteners of any kind. Only the best for baby’s brand new perfect skin.

Describe your style? I would describe my style as classic with a twist. I love design that can outlast trends. Clean, bright aesthetics are definitely a favourite.

Where does your passion to design come from? I grew up in a family of builders and artists. I’ve always appreciated how putting effort into the design of a home can make everyone who lives there feel special and is welcoming for guests. I love watching a client see their home come to its full potential.

What’s ahead for StephanieJean.com this year? Continuing to work with great clients and grow in every aspect of my business.

The question we love to ask “working moms”; can you share with us one tip you have when it comes to balancing work life and home life? For me it’s about remembering my priorities - keeping family first and when I’m not working, making a conscious effort to be present in even the little moments.

started making baby moccasins in 2009 after becoming frustrated by the lack of well-designed baby shoes. Using her second child, Gus, as a mocc-tester, and a bag of scrap leather she picked up at a yard sale, she began experimenting with designs. Working at her kitchen table, on a shoestring budget, Susan persisted through some disastrous attempts until she had created a pair of moccasins that not only looked adorable on Gus’ chubby little feet, but stayed on his feet as well. Yes, we know Jillian Harris doesn’t have children... but who cares when she has such great ideas? I LUNCH YOU

Joanna Piros, Senior Consultant, Counterpoint Communications, Mother of 5.

Becoming a new parent is probably one of the most challenging positions you will ever take on. Strangely enough, it is worse if you have always been a high achiever or a perfectionist. People who have never failed at anything haven’t learned the valuable lessons that failure can provide. Luckily, babies do a great job of bringing you to your knees. One of the first things you must learn is to abandon perfection in pursuit of much more important goals, like sleep, and eating an entire meal within an hour. It also means letting go of the notion that there is anything like a Perfect Parent. New parents are so often driven to prove that having a baby won’t change a thing about their lives. They will still do the Grouse Grind, go kayaking, have friends over for exquisite gourmet meals, and cuddle on the couch with Netflix once the baby is down for the night. You’ve got to let that fiction go! Having a baby will change your life; it’s supposed to! A baby isn’t a new car, or an accessory that can be controlled and assimilated. For quite a few years, your baby isn’t there for you: you are there for your baby. You are there to protect, to nurture, to love and if that means the house looks like hell and friends coming to visit have to bring pizza with them, that’s normal life. One of the most reliable ways to tell your children you love them is to feed them. Human beings have a pretty simple hierarchy of needs and food is right up there, a fundamental focus. I lunch you means pretty much the same thing as I love you. If you need help deciding where to invest the energies you have as parents, put them in the kitchen. Food brings people together; it creates traditions; it reassures and comforts. After all, when Max came back from Where the Wild Things were, he lived happily ever after because he found his supper waiting for him. And it was still hot.

We are so proud of our Fall/Winter collection. Our team focusedon expanding what works to simply bring - a crazy cool collection to the children’s fashion market. The Girl's Collection was a true labor of love and we are thrilled with the results. The Faux Leather Moto Jacket brings new life to any outfit. When paired with the Queen B Sweater, it is a must-have look for every little girl’s wardrobe. The Faux Fur Coat is the crown jewel of the Girls Fine Tailoring Collection, unlike anything else, it’s fantastic. The Boy’s Collection has a lot of classic, original Appaman vibes. We gravitate to a layered look and the Jackson Roll Neck sweater and Western Flannel Shirts are awesome for that. The Boy’s Fine Tailoring is bigger than ever this season as well. The Mod Suit is now available in eight different styles to offer options for every occasion, which is something we’re truly proud of.

The Importance of Creativity for Children High school, plus a degree, once led to a promising career. “Once” is the operative word today, as many people have graduate degrees and can’t find jobs. What does this mean for our children; what will their job market look like? Our children will require a highly creative thought process to build a career for themselves, and we, as parents and caregivers, must nurture creativity in our wee ones from the moment they open their eyes. Creativity is important for young children; creating something with our hands leads to a sense of accomplishment and pride. Taking nothing and molding it into something builds confidence. The more we create, the more our feelings of self-worth and individuality grow. For some of us, the idea of encouraging creativity in our children may seem daunting. Perhaps you don’t see yourself as a creative person; perhaps you associate creativity with only artistic endeavors. Don’t be fooled by that notion. We can be creative in the way we manage our finances, in gardening, in cooking, in just about anything. Consider these helpful tips when trying to encourage your children to be creative. Babies: Let go of all your inhibitions. Turn a rattle into your microphone and belt out that tune you love to sing in the shower. Using a rattle to serve as a variety of objects can teach your child to look at things differently and not just for their functionality. This can help them think outside of the box. Toddlers: Children are innately creative. Give a child a paper towel-roll and see how many different things it can become in 5 minutes: a spaceship or a trumpet. Get some basic art supplies and sit with your child for 10 minutes. Talk to your child about what he or she is creating and see where their imagination takes them. Sensory bins are great ways for toddlers to learn through play. Children easily turn piles of sand into enchanted forests and soapy water into underwater caves. Remember art materials are not the only way to enhance creativity: toddlers constantly learn through all of their senses. Preschoolers: Play-dates are a great way to help foster creativity: children tend to grow and learn from each other. Have you ever watched what happens when you give a couple of preschoolers a large cardboard box? The box is almost always more fun than the toy it contained. With preschoolers all you need to do is supply the materials and they’ll let their imaginations grow. School Age: It can be difficult to resist hovering, but it’s important to give your child space to explore independently. Hovering and monitoring are different. It helps to be close by to help your child expand some of those creative ideas and simultaneously keep them safe as creative ideas sometimes take flight into dangerous territories. Having a basket filled with some art supplies within your child’s reach is a great way for children to be creative whenever they feel that spark ignite. Keeping a basket of “old junk” around is also perfect for enhancing imaginations. Milk and egg cartons make great monsters, toilet paper rolls can become puppets and Kleenex boxes can be aquariums. The key is making sure the materials are easily and readily available for your child. Try and limit the amount of store bought toys; children should be encouraged to make their own props to incorporate into their dramatic play. Forget the costly big-ticket items and dig out the old dress-up box. Rummage through your closet, toss in that funky scarf, an old pair of heels and watch your child’s imagination work.

Why Lussobaby? What does it stand for? Lusso is an Italian word meaning luxury. We strive to provide a luxurious experience for every customer that walks into our stores, and we deliver it with affordable pricing.

What do you hope people think of when they think of "Lussobaby"? We have been embraced by our clientele and are humbled by the support we have received from our community and beyond. We’ve become the go-to store for anything baby and kids related due to our wide assortment of quality products, our customer experience and our convenience of ordering online. I hope moms are proud to shop at our store as I had wished when I opened it.

Where did your motivation come from to become a business owner? Becoming a mother and shopping around for my own needs gave me the idea that Vancouver needs a one-stop shopping destination for moms and RTRX YT GJ <MFY . HTZQISèY ąSI \FX F XNSLQJ location for everything under one roof with knowledgeable staff and the highest level of service. I wanted moms to be proud that they shop at my store. I wanted a store where quality, safety and service would be the number one priority along with competitive pricing. I was and am a big supporter of Mompreneur, and of local and Canadian-made products. I also wanted to ensure that we work with companies that are mindful of their impact on our environment. AlI of this is what I yearned for as a mom; so, Lussobaby was born in October 2009. Not so ironically, my oldest son was born in January 2010.
