Your Mouth and Your Health Many recent studies have shown a link between a person’s overall health and his/her oral health. Heart disease and diabetes are complicated by persistent periodontal infection. Oral bacteria has long been known to travel through the blood stream and settle in the heart and cause problems with the heart valves. Poor oral health adds stress to the immune system, making it harder for someone with diabetes or an autoimmune disease to fight an illness or heal quickly. An abscess from a tooth can spread to the brain. Pregnant women need to be aware that periodontal disease has been shown to lead to premature birth and low birth weight babies. Regular dental check-ups are essential to your overall health. Most small problems can be dealt with while they are still small. This saves stress on the body and possibly add years to your life, plus your time and money.

By Ken McEntee

Generations ago, when Avon was primarily a farming

community, shares Paul Burik, president of the French Creek Development Association, “Nagel Road” was likely an informal reference to the road that led through the peaceful country to the Nagel family farm. Today, Nagel Road continues to honor one of Avon’s original families while simultaneously representing the future of the rapidly changing town. The long awaited $27 million Nagel Road/I-90 interchange officially opened to traffic in December, providing easy highway access to more than 200 acres of undeveloped land which make up one of the primary locations for new development in Avon. Development in the area will

center around Cleveland Clinic’s Richard E. Jacobs Health Center, which opened in December 2011. The $97.9 million, 190,000-square-foot center includes an emergency room, four operating rooms and four procedure rooms and employs 400 physicians, nurses and support staff. New development, Burik concedes, in a town that has doubled in population in the last 10 years, is important. But as Avon prepares to celebrate its bicentennial in 2014, he emphasizes that it’s important to remember the City’s rich history as well. And that includes the promotion of the French Creek District – an historical shopping area sometimes referred to as “Old Avon.” “People talk about the new housing developments and the industry, but the French Creek District is still the heart of Avon,” says Burik, a retired architect. “We believe that if the core of the

apple is rotten, then the whole apple is bad. That’s why the downtown area has to remain vibrant.” The French Creek District is a quaint region of small, independently-owned shops and craft stores where the past remains alive. “They hold candlelight walks and events like that,” says Lori Switaj, editor of the Avon-Avon Lake Patch, an Internet-based local news service. “They put on a couple of festivals every year.” Just to the east of the French Creek District is the contrasting Avon Commons, an 800,000 square foot shopping and community complex on Detroit Road near Route 83. Along with restaurants and retailers of all sizes, Avon Commons features a festival market place, a recreational pathway and a gazebo with a surrounding amphitheater for community entertainment events. The Route 83 interchange is the innermost of Avon’s three bustling connections with I-90. The western side of town, at the Route 611/I-90 interchange, has come alive with the 2009 opening of All Pro Freight Stadium and the 2010 opening of the French Creek Family YMCA. While serving as the home of the Lake Erie Crushers professional baseball team, the stadium also hosts the Avon High School team and other high school and college teams. While the stadium has become Avon’s center for large events – like country music concerts and the annual Octoberfest, the YMCA is the place where residents congregate to work out and meet neighbors.

The 67,000 square foot complex is a state-of-the-art family recreation facility that features an eight-lane indoor pool with spectator seating, an aerobics-multipurpose studio, child-care center, family gym, sauna, whirlpool and wellness center. The $14 million facility was made possible through a collaboration between the Greater Cleveland YMCA and the City of Avon. With plenty of land to develop, and plenty of amenities to attract new residents, Avon remains one of the fastest growing cities in Ohio.

City Overview

The City of Avon Lake... Avon Lake, says Lori Switaj, immediate past president of the local Kiwanis Club and editor of the Avon-Avon Lake Patch, is a near perfect lakeside community. “What I have learned as an Avon Lake resident and a news editor here for more than 12 years is that it is a very neighborly town where people really look out for one another,” Switaj says. “When somebody has a problem, the people in this community step up and rally around them. I’ve seen it time and time again.” The development of the Lake Shore Electric Railway in the early 1900s transformed Avon Lake from a completely agricultural region to a recreational community with tourist cabins. Today, recreation remains one of the City’s premier attractions. Along with about 220 acres of land designated for parks and playgrounds, Lake Erie provides the City’s largest recreational attraction. “The lake is something special that not every community can highlight,” says Mayor

Greg Zilka. “We enjoy some wonderful sunsets and activities on the lake.” Last summer, the City initiated a series of summer festivals held on the shore of Lake Erie at Veteran’s Memorial Park. Festivals, such as the Waterfront Wine Festival and the Waterfront Family Festival, provide fun and camaraderie while promoting the fine restaurants and other small businesses in Avon Lake. Meanwhile, the annual Summer Market draws thousands of guests who shop for furniture, jewelry, art, vintage items, fresh produce, home decor and a variety of other goods, along with featured restaurants and live music on the beach. “The quality of life in Avon Lake is very high,” Zilka says. “Our school system is outstanding, and you can get around in Avon Lake and not get caught up in the traffic around Detroit Road. Those of us who want our blood pressure to stay low can travel down Lake

Road and get on I-90 at Clague Road or Lear-Nagel Road. Instead of competing with the traffic, you can have a pleasant ride along the lake every morning and evening going to and from work.” While not situated along a major corridor like I-90, Avon Lake is an attractive place to locate a business, Mayor Greg Zilka Switaj says. “If you are a business and want to relocate to Avon Lake you will have the best of everything,” she says. “There is plenty of room here, we have our own water utility and abatements are readily available.” To encourage growth for both new and existing businesses, the city’s new Jobs Growth Incentive Program offers tax breaks to businesses who grow their payroll from one year to the next. “If your payroll increased between 2011 to 2012, resulting in higher income tax generation, the City will give your company a rebate equivalent to 25 percent of the increase in taxes,” Zilka explains. “About 140 businesses in Avon Lake will get rebate checks this year.” While absent of corporate retailers and big box stores, independent local businesses are able to provide Avon Lake families with just about all the products and services they need.

“We have stores that can compete with larger retailers with similar products, competitive prices and better service,” Mayor Zilka insists. But for residents seeking more variety, shopping centers like Avon Commons and Crocker Park are only a few miles and minutes away. “We have parks, lake access, a wonderful community pool, a great library and incredible city services,” Switaj says. “Avon Lake is considered a highly desirable community for good reason.”

Education

Avon Local School District:

Working Together for Continued Excellence The fast growing Avon Local School District is providing

excellent education for over 4,100 students during the 2012-2013 school year. Due to the rapidly increasing enrollment, the citizens of Avon approved a bond issue in the fall of 2012 to construct a new middle school to house sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The addition of this educational facility will provide much needed space for the expected continuing growth in the district. Avon Local Schools has been rated as “Excellent” or “Excellent with Distinction” on the state report card each year since the Ohio Department of Education initiated this Superintendent method of measuring schools. While we Mike Laub enjoy a high academic rating, our students are educated at a fiscally reasonable cost. Avon’s spending per pupil ranks as one of the lowest of the 613 public school districts in the state. Being fiscally responsible to the citizens of Avon, while providing excellent education for its youth, continues to be a goal of the district. Avon High School houses grades 9-12 and offers the diversified curriculum required for successful participation in the global society. Students can take courses at nearby Lorain County Community College and earn both high school and college credit. Advanced Placement classes also provide students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. Extra-curricular and co-curricular activities in instrumental and vocal music, art, drama, athletics, and student organizations are offered to extend classroom experiences. Avon Middle School currently houses seventh and eighth graders and offers a wide array of learning opportunities for students. Advanced courses are available in selected subjects and students can earn high school credit in some courses. Emphasis is placed upon social and personal growth of the students for the development of a positive self-image. Students are encouraged to participate in the many extracurricular www.avonlocalschools.org and co-curricular activities

Are You Banking with Your Right Fit? Most people nowadays do their bank-

Just as we shop around for car insurance, groceries and household items, have you considered shopping around for your finances? Financial institutions seem to be popping up on every corner, so choosing the right fit for yourself or family can be a grueling task. Corporate and state banks have always been the largest options in the past, but during the bank bailout, more Americans turned to credit unions and are experiencing a different way to bank. A credit union pools the deposits of its members to fund low-interest loans, reducing or eliminating reliance on outside capital. Any profits generated by the credit union are distributed and utilized for the benefit of all community members. elebrating a monumental milestone of 75 years of business in 2013, CommStar Credit Union is new to Avon in 2012, presenting an alternative to a “onesize fits all” banking experience. Offering personal services with accounts tailored to individual needs, CommStar has rapidly become a staple in Avon’s French Creek District. Membership at CommStar is no longer tailored to one specific group, but is a community charter. This means if you live, work, worship, or attend school in Lorain County, you are eligible to have accounts. CommStar offers the same types of accounts as banks, but generally at lower cost. Because a Credit Union is owned by its members (anyone that has an account), they do not pay a Board of Directors or shareholders, therefore return profit to you in the form of dividends. This also allows them to offer lower rates on loans, saving you even more! You’ll see CommStar promoting “We’re Everywhere You Are” through the community, because wherever you go, you can access your CommStar accounts. Through online, telephone, mobile, web and text banking, bill pay, their network of over 20,000 ATM’s and Shared Branching, your money is always

No cost checking, higher returns on your investments and lower rates for easy, no-hassle loans are a few reasons you should visit CommStar. Elder Care

for Family Members By Laura Lakner

Making the decision to move loved ones from their

home to a live-in facility for long-term care isn’t easy. Change is difficult in any situation, especially when it involves making decisions for someone you love who may not embrace the final outcome. With many options and information available today regarding care for the elderly, a difficult process can be easier on everyone. How do you know your loved one needs more care? q Problems with mental health issues, serious forgetfulness and Alzheimer’s. q A fall that causes a broken hip or other bone. q The death of a spouse. This is especially true when the spouse who passed away serves as the caregiver.

What types of Living and Long-Term Care Facilities are Available? Independent Living: These are apartment-type complexes that offer to help if necessary, but not regularly. This provides better security and closer help, but residents basically live on their own. Assisted Living: These facilities are licensed by the state and offer more staff on site, including nurses and aids to assist with medication and provide some help with getting around. Nursing Home: These facilities provide 24/7 staff, including physicians on call. In addition to these facilities, you can also choose a program where caregivers come into the home to help with daily chores or medical care. How Can I Make the Transition to a Nursing Home Easier on My Loved One? Be upfront, as honest as possible and include them in some of the decision making so they feel in control and empowered. If possible, it’s best to have the conversation about care with your loved one before the need arises. Have information already gathered about different options in your community. Once you’ve selected a home with your loved one, be involved in order to make things as comfortable as possible for them. Visit as often as you can and talk to the staff about any concerns or questions you may have. Staying involved will help all of you reach a comfort level that will benefit the entire family. w w w. Some things to consider in your planning stage are: Annuals provide bright colors and impact from spring through the fall and are great for filling in gaps in your landscape. Hardscapes, such as walkways, patios, decks, pergolas, and privacy fencing create unique and original additions to your landscape. Water Features offer nice focal points, not only through their visual appearance but by the smooth and relaxing sounds they provide. From outdoor kitchens and fireplaces to pergolas and lush gardens, new ways to enjoy the outdoors are increasingly popular. Covered porches and verandas are more prevalent, as are paver and natural stone patios. Once your dreams and visions have been transformed into a well-executed plan, it’s time to create it. Choosing a landscape development company that possesses fine craftsmanship and attention to detail is extremely important to a beautiful end product. And after completing the transformation of your outdoor living space, it must be maintained. This should be considered when making the decision as to who will be designing, building and maintaining your outdoor spaces. Highly-skilled professionals who specialize in horticultural practices will make sure that your investment looks as good as the day it was completed. To get started on your spring landscape transformation, contact the professionals at Cutting Edge Lawn and Landscape Inc. at 440-933-6808. They create not just exceptional outdoor living spaces but also beautiful curb appeal that suits their customers homes, needs & budgets. Homes & Real Estate

Turning “For Sale” into “Sold!” By Laura Lakner

Buying or selling a home is

often the biggest decision a person will make in their lifetime. Here are a few suggestions to help when beginning your selling process. Set the stage as first impressions are very important. Make sure your property is clean and neat, inside and out. When people drive up to your home, the first impression can make or break the sale. Peeling paint, uncut lawns and shrubbery are a definite no-no. It goes without saying that the interior of your home should be clean, neat and freshly painted, if necessary or possible. Walls should be clean, neutral and uncluttered. Well-lit homes show better. Wash all of the windows, floors and appliances;

make sure drapes are clean and opened to let in natural light. De-clutter surfaces and remove personal items from around the house. Spending a small amount of money to “stage” your house can help you get a higher price in the long run. You want buyers to envision themselves living there so let your house be the haven they fall in love with! Price your property correctly for your neighborhood and not what you would like to get. No matter what the market conditions are, a realistic price for your area will get your home sold in a reasonable time frame. Talk with a real estate agent that has experience in your area. The realtor will review recently sold properties, current listings and assist in establishing a price that will sell your home as quickly as the current market conditions will allow.

Your County. Your Chamber. Together! The Lorain County Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 25th year of bringing the business communities of Lorain County “Together.” When business leaders decided to create this regional chamber, it was always meant to showcase the diversity and resiliency of Lorain County, something that is even more evident today. While things have changed a lot in 25 years, the County Chambers’ commitment to its members has never wavered – make Lorain County a great place to live, work, play and pray. During the 25th Anniversary year, the Lorain County Chamber also laid claim to being the fastest growing Chamber in Ohio when it held a membership campaign and reached over 700

member companies who were part of the regional Chamber. With a new influx of businesses, the County Chamber has added many exciting events to its calendar and is continually working to promote business investment in and around Lorain County. The Lorain County Chamber is a founding member of the Lorain County Growth Partnership, home to the Lorain County Safety Council, provides access to Small Business development and hosts events for our local teachers, politicians and business leaders. The County Chamber looks to even more growth in the future. Your County. Your Chamber. Together! w w w. A v o n - A v o n L a k e . c o m
