St. Elizabeth’s Hospital has five operating rooms, two endoscopy suites, Stage 1 and Stage 2 recovery areas, Jason Loree twelve intensive care beds, and five 24-bed units capable of being upgraded to intermediate monitoring. St. Elizabeth’s Hospital also features expanded radiology and imaging services including a permanent MRI, nuclear and vascular testing, EEG, EMG, pulmonary function testing, and inpatient rehabilitation. Summer Garden Food Manufacturing, a division of the John Zidan Co. and maker of the popular Gia Russa Italian foods brand, opened in Boardman in 2008. Having the opportunity to build their facility in a number of locations, Summer Garden chose Boardman to build their 50,000 square-foot food production facility and research and development center. In addition, the new plant is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified, a national standard for green construction. In April 2009, the Surgical Hospital at Southwoods opened its doors to patients. The Surgical Hospital at Southwoods offers stays for patients recovering from surgery with private rooms and amenities such as flat-screen TVs, room service, and high-quality linens, rivaling the best hotel rooms!

Shopping opportunities and retail stores also keep Boardman Township a Mahoning Valley destination. Thanks for the Memories Chief James Dorman
People often ask a retiring firefighter what he remembers from his past career. Here are some events from Chief James Dorman’s history. 1968-1972 I became a volunteer firefighter because my dad was also a volunteer firefighter.
1973 A 1941 Mack truck was still in service as a standby pumper and BFD took delivery of Truck 201, a turbine engine fire truck, the first in the nation.
1974 Arena Bowling Lanes on Simon Road burned to the ground on February 28.
A $200,000 arson fire hit Marks Piano – a candle was nestled into a trash bag full of gasoline.
1975 Second arson fire hit Batos office building on Karago causing $100,000 in damages.
I remember searching for the fire on the upper floor with four others when the floor dropped 12”. We threw our hose down and ran for the door. The whole floor that we had just run from collapsed into the basement as the last firefighter exited safely. Hutch Manufacturing had a blowout and explosion of a fuel oil heater almost killing five BFD firefighters.
1977 Fire Station 71 was remodeled for the first time. My salary was $1,023 per month.
1979 February 14, Steve Masters shot his young wife Jodie and set the house on fire. Many firefighters testified at the trial, including me, who had found the murder weapon. He was convicted of arson and murder.
An Oak Ave. gasoline storage tank lit up as two men were servicing the inside causing severe burns to both.
1983 March 16 - A $2 million dollar fire hit Tippecanoe Country Club. Boardman provided mutual aid.
April 1 - The original radio tower at Station 71 topples to the ground during installation.

1985 May 20 - An illegal fireworks shop blows up killing many. Dick Schneider and I stumble across a Taco Bell on fire at 3:00 am on the way back from a false alarm.
1986 Christmas Eve - Rossi’s Furniture next to Station 74 burns causing $500,000 in damage.
1987 March – An arson fire at the Edgar Miller plant on Velma Ct. causes $445,000 in damages.
I remember standing in a large puddle of water and gasoline, holding the head of an accident victim as he laid half in and half out of his car when the mixture ignited around both of us. August 8 - Stambaugh Thompson’s is hit by lightning causing $2.5 million loss in the Boardman Plaza. Six stores in the Marwood Plaza next to Sparkle sustained $550,000 in damages caused by an arsonist. Hair spray cans were rocketing into the sky like a 4th of July fireworks show.
1999 Thermal imaging cameras are first purchased by the Boardman Fire Department.
2002 Summer - lightning hits the historical St. James Church, damaging the steeple.
...and I remember a long and fulfilling career for which I will forever be grateful. The Boardman Township Trustees would like to thank Chief James Dorman for his over 40 years of dedicated service to the community and wish him a happy retirement.

Police Dept. Canine Unit Program Update The Boardman Police Department has always
been proud of the partnership that we share with our community which helps to create a safe and attractive place to call home for our residents and businesses. Thanks to a generous donation from Tony Lariccia and his family, the department recently brought on its newest member, Eros. He and his partner, Officer Brian Cionni, have been working together since the Fall of 2010. Boardman Township, however, will be losing our other canine officer, Yuma, as he is due for retirement in 2012. Yuma has worked with his partner, Officer Daryn Tallman, for over 7 years which is quite a long service record when you put it in dog years. Faced with the challenge of funding, the Township Canine Unit is asking for your help! Since its inception in 1992, Boardman Township was the first department in this area to understand the value of a proactive police canine unit. We would like to continue this tradition of excellence as we work to raise the funding necessary to bring on a new canine member to the

force. A new canine-capable vehicle will be necessary in order to accomplish this. Keeping two canine officers in the Police Department retains our current capabilities in finding narcotics, tracking criminal suspects and aiding in crowd control, making the community a safer place for everyone. Any amount is appreciated and 100% will stay in the fund exclusively for the canine unit’s use. Boardman Park: Where the Benefits are Endless
Since 1947 Boardman Township Park,
the “Green Oasis” of the community has been serving the recreational needs of our community. The park, located in the heart of Boardman on U.S. Route 224, is a recreational haven for the area it serves and is appreciated by people of all ages. Of the 227 acres, approximately 60 acres are developed with a variety of recreational facilities. The balance, 167 acres, is preserved for natural habitat, which supports many native species of plants and animals and is an excellent representative of Ohio’s glaciated beech/maple forests and lowland hardwood forests. It is these two differing, yet balanced uses that truly make Boardman Park the treasured “Green Oasis” of our community. It is this unique and diverse footprint of facilities and programs that is responsible for making the park one of the most popular recreational facilities in the Mahoning Valley. The park offers a variety of indoor meeting rooms with seating from 42 people up to 232. This is a perfect location for family gatherings, graduation parties, baby & bridal showers, wedding receptions, and other special family events. The flexible facilities in a serene and beautiful environment offers business owners a great off-site location for meetings and events. 10

During the Summer season (April – October), the park features five open-air pavilions that provide a great atmosphere for family reunions, church groups, and school picnics. All pavilions have tarps, lights, water, electrical outlets and charcoal grills. St. James Meeting House, Boardman Township’s most prominent historical landmark is considered and appreciated as one of Boardman’s greatest treasures. St. James was moved to the park from its original location at the corner of Route 224 and Route 7 in 1972 and renamed St. James Meeting House. It was then entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Today, because of its uniqueness, St. James is a popular place for several hundred weddings a year and is used for memorial services, baptisms, concerts and public meetings. Discover the beauty and amenities of the park while walking the new North Trail. The trail located on the east side of the Main Drive of the Park, starts at the Community Center and travels North to the Bicentennial Rock of Boardman, which is across from St. James Meetings House. The trail provides a safe and accessible pathway to park w w w. b o a r d m a n t w p. c o m
facilities and to a variety of recreational opportunities. Walkers and joggers will be able to walk or exercise in an environment designed to enhance their park experience. Via the Eisenhower Branch, trail users will be able to enjoy the natural areas of the park. The Eisenhower Branch connects to the Nature Trail system located within the 167 acres of natural habitat, as well as the Hike & Bike Trail. The Nature Trail system consists of eight (8) trails, with a total length of 2.7 miles; thereby, making the total for all trails in the park over 4 miles in length. According to its mission, the park offers a variety of programs for all ages. All generations can enjoy the experience of the Green Oasis, from Senior Fun Days to Music In The Park Concerts to Family Nights In The Park to Adventure Camp to Military Band Concerts & Firework Shows. Over the years the park has developed the reputation of providing the community with the finest military bands in the

country. Usually around July 4 the park will feature a nationally recognized armed forces band with a magnificent firework display, whether it is the U.S. Army Field Band or the U.S. Air Force Band of Flight, the audience is guaranteed to enjoy the finest patriotic music in the land. Wouldn’t it be great if Boardman
had a place where all of our furry friends could exercise and socialize? Well, Friends of Paws Town, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is trying to raise funding for Mahoning County’s first enclosed dog park, aptly named “Paws Town.” Their goal is to raise $50,000 for the construction of the 1.5 acre (or larger) dog park located in Boardman Park, just right of their Southern Blvd. entrance. They have currently raised over $12,000 through fundraisers and public donations.

Since its beginnings, Boardman Park and the Board of Commissioners have worked diligently to meet the recreational needs and preserve areas of undisturbed natural habitat of the community. Please be assured that they will continue to pursue this mission to insure that the “Green Oasis” remains ever green. The Boardman School System has for many years helped define our community. The tradition of excellence that has long been the trademark of our music program is evident throughout the school district and extends out to the entire Boardman community. The mark of excellence in the district is noticeable whether it is in our nationally acclaimed music and arts programs, in our strong and diverse academic offerings, or in our outstanding men’s Frank Lazzeri and women’s athletic teams. It is clear that our school system represents one of the pillars on which this community was built. A “tradition of excellence” in academics, the arts and athletics is the hallmark of quality our Boardman community has come to enjoy from the Boardman Local School District. For eight years the Boardman School System has earned an Ohio Department of Education “Excellent Report Card” for its overall academic achievement. Two of our elementary schools, Robinwood Lane and West Boulevard, have earned the “Excellence with Distinction” Elementary School students with collected canned goods for the Thanksgiving Food Drive. designation for the past three years – the highest academic one of the “Top 100 Music Communities” in America and award given by the Ohio Department of Education. MCCTC Helps Students Launch Careers There’s no substitute
for experience. The experience that students gain at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is one-of-a-kind. MCCTC students are not just learning about a career, they practice it and live it every day. With more than 22 programs of study, students can choose from a number of careers. Whether students choose interactive labs in the Biotechnology program or decide to run a public restaurant in the Culinary Arts program or a salon in the Cosmetology program, MCCTC offers students the opportunity to explore their interests and pursue their passion all while still in high school.

Experiences are not just limited to the school. Students are able to go out into the community and work with local companies, businesses and colleges through internships, community service projects and partnerships. Students in the Biotechnology program also take part in summer internships with Youngstown State University as researchers while students in the Criminal Justice program clock hours during the summer on ridealongs with the local police force. With an emphasis placed on real-world experience and application, students leave MCCTC with the skills, licenses and industry credentials to lead successful careers. After an extensive construction and remodel project, the Career Center opened a 35,000 square-foot addition in 2010. hile it is sad to think about people facing death, Hospice of the Valley restores dignity to the dying while being a valuable support to the family in their greatest time of need. Their mission is to help people with a terminal illness live the last months of their lives peacefully and in comfort. Emphasis is on pain management and symptom control. Serving those in need in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties, they offer a Community Bereavement Resource Center with grief support to anyone, free of charge. Since 1979, Hospice of the Valley, a nonprofit organization, has served patients regardless of their financial situation. ason Loree, a life-long resident of Boardman Township, graduated from Boardman High School in 2000, and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, with a Minor in Pre-Law and a Master’s in Public Administration from Kent State University. He has been the Township Administrator since September 2008. He is the Township’s 4th Administrator and is responsible for day-to-day operations as well as negotiating collective bargaining agreement, capital project management, and personnel management.
Growing up in Boardman Township, Jason has been active in the community, working with other local governments to establishing programs such as the gas and electric aggregation, Metro Leaders Government Round Table, and ABC Water and Storm Water District. When he is not working at the Township, Jason and his wife Abbey have started a non-profit organization “Friends of Paws Town” to raise money to build Mahoning County’s first outdoor enclosed dog park that is estimated to open in the Spring of 2012.

When Assisted Living is Necessary Making a decision for Assisted Living is dif-
ficult on everyone. How do we know when the time is right? Many children may see changes in their parents yet fear having that “talk” about moving from their home of 50+ years because of the pain the conversation may cause. Many Assisted Living facilities will vary slightly on the level of care they provide and their pricing for services. At the Commons at Greenbriar, we offer our services for one flat rate. This includes your utilities, your television service, housekeeping, laundry, nursing assistance, bathing/dressing help, and transportation services. What is the Boardman Community Fund? Making its formal debut in the fall of 2010, the Boardman Community Foundation’s mission is to enhance the community spirit addressing community needs through providing opportunities for partnerships to support donor and community initiatives creating legacies for today and tomorrow. The Board of Directors of the foundation held two community focus groups in which the common ideas shared amongst the participants were the need for community improvements such as beautiful inviting gateways and major intersections, signage to welcome visitors to the Boardman Community, enhancing the roads and boulevards with pleasant landscaping, and the acquisition and preservation of green spaces. When it came to developing projects in the community, participants wanted the projects to be recreational for residents of all ages like an outside skating rink, stadium, senior community center, more transportation, and hike and bike trails that would connect the community assets with one another. Other ideas discussed included creating a community day that would encourage all of the different nonprofit and civic organizations, churches, schools, neighborhoods, and businesses to come together building pride for Boardman. Additional ideas included educational programs for younger children and teen engagement in volunteerism and character development programs. The BCF plans to meet with Boardman civic, community and

neighborhood organizations to further inform the community of the objectives of the BCF and gain further input and identify collaborative efforts for community members and organizations to work together to improve the quality of life for Boardman Township. Jim Rosa of the BCF had this to say about the forums: “The community forums showed that the people of Boardman have great ideas on how to improve our community. Our challenge is to grow the resources of the BCF, enabling the community projects and programs to become a reality.” The BCF is committed to making a positive impact in the image of the Boardman community through partnerships with organizations, businesses, schools parks, churches and civic groups. Did You Know??? Boardman Township is one of fourteen townships in Mahoning County, Ohio. Mahoning County is named for an Indian word meaning “salt lick.”
Jackie Mayo, who resides in Boardman and owns Mayo & Associates, Inc. Realtors, played baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies between 1948 and 1953 and was one of Philadelphia’s ‘Whiz Kids.’
Boardman Township has a total area of 23.78 square miles, 23.68 square miles of it is land and 0.10 square miles of it is water.
Steve Vallos currently plays offensive line for the Seattle Seahawks , after his college career at Wake Forest, and is from Boardman.
One person who made a huge mark in the area was Edward DeBartolo, Sr., who is best remembered as the father of the American Shopping Mall. The DeBartolo Corporation moved from Youngstown to make its headquarters in Boardman in the 1950’s and one of the first Strip Malls in the country was Boardman Plaza.
The fast food chain, Arby’s, opened its first location in Boardman in 1964. The original Arby’s store – with the distinctive round roof architecture – remains open as a bird seed store with a new Arby’s right across the street on Route 224 near the Southern Park Mall.
Bernie Kosar, the former Cleveland Browns Quarterback, grew up in Boardman. Kosar’s eight year career with the Browns made him one of the most popular football players in Ohio history. Musician Maureen McGovern, best known for the 1970s hit “The Morning After” is originally from Boardman.

William F. Maag, Jr. donated 72 acres of land to Boardman Township to establish a a public park in 1946. A memorial to the veterans of Boardman was dedicated at the Maag Outdoor Arts Theatre on Memorial Day in 2003. Founded in 1891 by Youngstown attorney, Volney Rogers, Mill Creek Park is the second largest metropolitan park in the United States.
