Dear Grafton Residents and Visitors, I am pleased to present the 2011-2012 Village of Grafton Magazine &

ON THE RIGHT TRACK: (L to R) Village of Grafton Administration: Lori Clark, Mayor Shari Szczepanski and Linda Bales.

Community Guide. This magazine was created to provide important and interesting information for your use and also for those who may be interested in visiting or becoming part of our wonderful community. It also recognizes many of your neighbors who own and operate businesses in Grafton. This project would not have been possible without their generous sponsorship. I encourage you to visit and support our local businesses and to become involved in the local organizations in our Village. Grafton is a community that we’ve chosen to call home because it is a wonderful place to live, play and raise families. From our parks and open spaces to our fine neighborhoods – old and new – to our shops, restaurants and retail stores, it’s all here for you to enjoy. As Mayor, your Village Council and I are dedicated to maintaining a superior quality of life for all residents of Grafton. I encourage you to be involved in our community and to attend our council meetings, which are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m., at Town Hall, 960 Main Street. Small Town Has a Big Heart

The Village of Grafton, says Mayor Shari A. Szczepanski, offers everything a resident could want or need. “You will find a hometown feeling throughout our Village,” she says. “It’s a community where people are there for each other. They care about their neighbors and their community. It’s just a nice place to call home.” Grafton residents, she says, offer open arms to their neighbors in the community and to visitors as well. “Our town has a heart as big as the state,” the Mayor says. While offering modern services and amenities, the Village of about 2,600 residents is surrounded by the openness of rural farmland. ON MAIN STREET: “If we don’t have Main Street in the it, we’re very close to Village of Grafton it,” says Szczepanski. “Along with our local (above); Nancy cuts a customer’s hair at businesses and stores, abundant shopping the Village Barber. and dining opportunities are a short drive

away and we’re just 30 minutes from the arts and excitement of downtown Cleveland. We offer peace and quiet, but the hustle and bustle are not far away.” Grafton features a variety of independently-owned and operated businesses including grocery and retail shopping, restaurants, pizza shops, dentists, fuel stations, florists, barber shops, hardware and feed suppliers, auto parts stores and repair shops, a gun shop, banks, manufacturing companies and insurance companies. “We still have some room for new development, both residential and commercial,” Szczepanski says.

Small Town Charm Along with modern conveniences, Grafton has preserved much of its cherished history. Sandstone sidewalks – remnants of the village’s days as a major supplier of sandstone, still parallel many city streets. And on 2 0 1 1 - 2 0 1 2 G r af t o n Mag azi n e & Community Guide

Main Street, where many of the Village’s public services are located, most of the restored buildings are more than a century old, emphasizing the historical charm of yesterday. Town Hall, in fact, is housed in a colonial style building that once served as a bank (see picture, right). Grafton’s history dates back to 1817. That’s when Jonathan and Grindall Rawson, two brothers from Massachusetts, relocated here on land their father, Samuel, purchased from the Connecticut Land Company. On May 24, 1852, the Village of Grafton was named Rawsonville in honor of the first settlers, but it was changed on January 1, 1877, when the Village was incorporated. Over the years railroads, sandstone quarries and gristmills all played important roles in developing the Village. In 1849, sandstone was discovered near Parsons and Indian Hollow

Roads. Immigrants from Poland, Wales, Ireland and Germany came to work in the quarries, which supplied sandstone to locations around the world until the use of cement changed building procedures around 1920.

Village Services Today, Grafton is governed by the Mayor and an elected Village Council. Szczepanski has served as mayor since 1990. Law enforcement in Grafton has grown from a Village Constable to a full-time Police Department that includes a police chief, three full-time patrolmen, three full-time dispatchers and several part-time patrolmen and dispatchers. The mission of the Police Department is to continuously provide a superior level of quality service and to consistently strive to seek and find, in an unrelenting, dedicated and committed fashion, the ways and means to affirmatively promote, preserve and enhance the safety, security and overall quality of life within the community.

Since 1935, the village has been served by an all volunteer Fire Department. Today, the department is made up of 35 firefighters and 15 emergency medical technicians who provide accident response, fire suppression and basic life support services. Two fire stations house Grafton’s three pumpers, one mini-pumper, an equipment van and two ambulances. Mutual aid is given and received with neighboring departments should the need arise.

What We Do Matters The Ross Companies,

Ross Environmental Services, Inc., Ross Incineration Services, Inc. and Ross Transportation Services, Inc., spend every day protecting the environment by safely and efficiently managing thousands of gallons of hazardous waste, effectively protecting and preserving our natural resources and surroundings. Ross provides a needed and necessary service to manufacturing companies, recycling firms, remediation contractors, hospitals and universities. As these businesses produce products and provide services, they also generate waste materials. Proper transportation and treatment of these hazardous waste by-products by the Ross companies helps to keep this country’s factories, refineries and recycling firms operating to produce the goods and services that we need. In addition to protecting the greater population, the Ross Companies play an important role in our local community by providing jobs, tax dollars and resources. Ross is committed to Grafton and works to make a difference through contributions, volunteerism and local involvement. 6

ina Pribulsky, LSW/MSSA, owner of Homewatch CareGivers, knows personally about the need for home care. At age 13, she suffered a stroke that paralyzed her left side. She returned home from the hospital needing to learn to walk and write. “I was happy to be home, but realized I needed lots of help,” she says. Thankfully, her dad found live-in caregivers and Tina made significant progress. That experience made her aware of the importance of caregivers with integrity and the strong desire to care for the needy, thus driving her and her father to open their own homecare agency. Tina has earned health care degrees from Bowling Green State University and Case Western Reserve. Tina states, “Our caregivers provide the highest standards of care and compassion to individuals with varying needs, from Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, MS, ALS, Heart Disease and Diabetes. Sooner Beats Later for Knee Replacement If painful arthritis is hampering your ability to walk,

there’s no need to “tough it out” until the problem gets worse. According to Cleveland Clinic orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Michael Kolczun, you may be better off having your knee evaluated now. Improved surgical tools and procedures have made surgery for the knee one of the most successful surgeries of the last century. If damage is confined to one of the three compartments of the knee, surgeons can remove and resurface only damaged areas, sparing healthy cartilage. After partial knee replacement, patients walk on the day of surgery and go home within 24 hours

on oral pain medication. If a full knee replacement is required, you may be a candidate for one of the newer types of knee replacement parts that are highly flexible, allowing the knee to bend up to 155 degrees. With proper care, individuals who undergo total knee replacement can expect a greater than Dr. Michael Kolczun ninety-five percent chance of success for at least 15 years. For more information, see our ad on the facing page.

Falls are the leading cause of death and injury for Americans over 65, according to the National Center for Injury Prevention Control. More than 35% of all seniors – or about 11 million – fall each year, resulting in over 13,000 deaths. Of survivors, 50% lose their mobility, and 40%, their independence – forever. There are many things you can do to prevent such an accident such as: remove clutter from the home, tuck cords away, get rid of rugs, exercise regularly (increases leg strength), ask a doctor or pharmacist to review

medications to reduce side effects that may cause dizziness, have vision checked, add grab bars and railings, and improve home lighting. Homeowners Insurance: What You Should Know Homeowners Insurance, also known as

hazard insurance, combines various personal protections including losses to one’s home, its contents and outbuildings, as well as liability insurance for accidents that may happen at the home or at the hands of the homeowner. Most homeowner policies provide very broad coverage to the policyholder, but there are certain exclusions you should be aware of. The most common exclusion is for water backing up from outside the dwelling’s plumbing system. This can be taken care of by adding a “Water Backup” endorsement. Call your insurance agent for your coverage options. Flood is also not covered under your homeowner policy. Flood is groundwater flowing over its normal confines over what is dry land. The remedy here is to purchase a separate flood policy. The prices vary greatly depending on your assigned flood zone. The best way to make sure your coverage is there when you need it is to schedule a periodic review with your insurance professional. Home valuation is a frequently discussed topic as a result of the recent home market crash. The question asked is “Why is my house insured for $250,000 when I would be lucky to sell it for $150,000?” The simple answer to this is that the insurance company insures the dwelling for what it would cost to rebuild. This is generally more than the market value in our current conditions. Lastly, make sure your homeowner insurance is a replacement cost policy, including both dwelling and your personal property. — Submitted by Mark Cummings Agency, Nationwide Insurance

one of Grafton’s finest destinations for area residents and visitors. Owners Kevin and Gail Flanigan welcome you to ”Dublin’s Grafton Street,” right here in Grafton, Ohio. The Unicorn is considered by many Northeast Ohioans as one of the best Irish pubs in the Cleveland area. The restaurant name was derived from an Irish folk tune and the décor reminds one of Dublin, Ireland. Favorite foods include Bourbon Salmon, Lake Erie Perch and Connamara Chicken, a dish consisting of chicken breast, bacon, mushrooms, red onions in an Irish Mist cream sauce. The Unicorn can handle events of any size…the Lorain County Chamber of Commerce will be holding one of their after-hours events at the Unicorn in September. Slainte! —Scott Hughes

recreation area is just beginning! What a fun, safe place to cool off with your family on a hot summer day. Water will spray from Jets and immediately drain so that no standing water is left behind, making this energy efficient and low maintenance. Pumps are activated by a touch pad easily activated by children and water shuts off after a period of time. A fence is planned to surround the area prior to completion. This project is sponsored by the Midview Kiwanis and the Village of Grafton. Contributions are still needed, with donation containers located at Town Hall, the Grafton Library, Grafton Convenient, Harvest Café, Grafton Scoop, and Nancy’s Diner. Living History The Soldiers Of History were formed in 1991 in Grafton, Ohio. The members of the group represent 12 wars in which 1,178,000 fighting men died. The weapons that they carry are all original and valued in excess of $10,000. The uniforms are also original or exact replicas and valued in excess of $12,000. The Soldiers Of History have won numerous awards and are in great demand for parades and other live appearances, including the lead in the Cleveland Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. The objective of this extraordinary group is simply “To Preserve The History Of The American Fighting Man.” “Soldiers Of History, A Video Presentation,” is a living memorial of over 200 years of Americans at war. In it you will hear information about every war that Americans fought in, from the French-Indian to the Persian Gulf. The video discusses facts about uniforms, weapons, and how the soldier lived during war. You will see each period of history come alive and explain how and why Americans died for our country. “The Soldiers Of History” video is “not-for-profit” and an educational tool showing the true cost of freedom. The cost is $20 each and is useful in teaching school children and scouting groups. To order your video(s), send a check or money order to: Soldiers Of History, VFW Post 3341, 781 Huron St., Grafton, Ohio 44044.
