Area Chamber of Commerce

As an advocate for the business sector, the Chamber provides leadership and services to local businesses. The Chamber offers to promote its members’ businesses through a variety of opportunities, such as monthly luncheons, Business After Hours, and the Annual Mega Mixer which brings over 300 people from over 20 different chambers together for the largest networking event of the year. The Chamber of Commerce also takes a very active role in the community by supporting local students through an Annual Business Scholarship and the Don Reiman Pre-Law scholarship. The PACC is also host to the largest annual community event, the Rib ‘N Rock Rib Cook-Off. With support from local businesses, this family-friendly festival features a competition for best ribs and best sauce along with top-notch entertainment, rides and an array of ethnic foods. The Chamber serves the cities of Parma, Parma Heights and Seven Hills. Each city is conveniently located close to downtown Cleveland and area freeways. The three cities offer quality education, an array of shopping sites, numerous family parks, and varied recreational opportunities. The city of Parma, originally part of Parma Township which was created in 1826, is Cleveland’s largest suburb. Parma was incorporated in 1924 and officially became a city in 1931. Parma is home to Ukrainian Village and to Stearns Homestead, an actual

working farm within a city. General Motors, Parma Community Hospital, and Cuyahoga Community College make up the largest employers in Parma. In 1911 a portion of the original Parma Township seceded to form the Village of Parma Heights. Parma Heights is a city of fine suburban living, a great place to raise a family and a wonderful retirement community. Balancing all the needs of contemporary life, the town features beautiful churches, sound schools, recreation, and services designed for residents of all ages. Parma Heights celebrates their Centennial in 2011. Seven Hills, the five-square-mile town, is nestled between Parma and Independence. It is almost entirely residential and is famous for having a large number of parks. Virtually every house in the community is served by a close, local park which provides recreation opportunities such as basketball courts, tennis courts, walkways (including a hike/bike path that will link up to the Cuyahoga Valley Recreation Area), picnic areas, baseball, soccer and football fields, pavilions, sand volleyball courts and grilling capabilities. The Community Recreation Center offers a unique pool area and a wide variety of activities. Local residents take great pride in their city and enjoy the advantages of being able to work and live in a family-oriented community abounding with business opportunities. Recognizing the importance of a prosperous local economy to the community’s quality of life, we encourage your support of the many local businesses that helped make this publication possible. Please use this directory to discover the business, recreational and residential opportunities our area has to offer. Give us a call at the Chamber if we can be of service. We hope you will utilize and enjoy the 2011 Parma Area Chamber of Commerce Membership Directory & Community Guide. It’s a Wonderful Life in the Tri-city Area

t’s appropriate this year to highlight together three of the links on the chain of wonderful cities that make up the suburban necklace surrounding Cleveland. Parma, Parma Heights and Seven Hills each bring a unique, unmatched flavor to the area, yet all three of these magnificent cities share so much. From an impressive, state-of-the-art medical center and award winning school system to a dedicated residential population and highly regarded cluster of small businesses, these communities not only stand tall as one, they sparkle. Cornerstones of the community, like the now 50-year-old Parma Community General Hospital, have helped to keep this area solid for generations. While so many other medical centers

have transitioned to become a part of larger hospital systems, Parma Hospital remains the area’s only independent medical facility of its kind, keeping its focus directly on the community by offering personalized care that responds to the changing needs of the population it serves. Part of that has involved updating and expanding in crucial areas like maternity, rehabilitation, oncology, and cardiovascular care. 2011 Parma Area Chamber of Commerce Membership Directory & Community Guide

But milestones haven’t been limited to the medical community alone. The Parma City School district extends its reach to nearly 12,000 students in 18 schools across three communities. A combination of outstanding leadership and dedicated parents has helped to elevate the district to a well-deserved rating of “excellent. Part of the reason stems from high school career programs offered in partnership with Cuyahoga Community College’s Western Campus. Students are afforded a seamless four-year education that culminates in the awarding of an associate’s degree.

The Parma, Parma Heights and Seven Hills communities are also responsible for supporting a number of beloved small businesses, everything from bakeries and delis to restaurants and grocers. They endure through the prosperous times as well as the lean ones due largely to the fervent support of the neighbors who live, work, and raise their families right alongside these local entrepreneurs. And that, dear friends, brings us to the acknowledgement of the biggest link in the chain that binds these three terrific cities together: The people. Thank you for all that you do to make your communities the jewels that they are. This is the year they will shine together—brighter than ever.

First Impressions are Lasting Impressions

A

s the new superintendent of the Parma City Schools, I won’t pretend to know everything there is to know about the storied traditions and rich history of the Parma City Schools and the communities we serve. That being said, I have learned a few things since I came here in August 2010.

local businesses and organizations in support of our children. It is amazing to me how many different community groups including businesses and churches are in our schools doing everything from tutoring students to sponsoring student activities to supporting programs with incentives and volunteers.

My first impressions have been entirely positive. I understand why the district received an excellent rating when I see how much teachers, students, and parents have invested in learning and instruction. We are blessed with strong alumni groups, boosters, community and business partnerships and PTA who are all on board to give children the best education possible even in the face of hard times.

My first impressions are turning into lasting impressions because of the strength and honor of the people involved with the Parma City Schools. This is a great place to be and I truly appreciate how welcome everyone has made me feel.

I have seen parent groups raising money and volunteering for a variety of activities throughout the system. In addition, we have three strong communities who have been willing to partner with

ver the span of 158 years, the Parma City School District has made quality education a tradition. ways to offer our students the best education possible.

We serve nearly 12,000 students at 18 schools across Parma, Parma Heights and Seven Hills. Their education is greatly enhanced by the tremendous amount of parental and community support exhibited by organizations such as the Parma Council of PTAs, the Community/Business/Schools partnership, the Parma Area Chamber of Commerce, and civic groups including the Elks, Kiwanis, and Rotary Clubs.

18 Career and Technical Education programs are available to our high school juniors and seniors. Located within our three high schools, students remain inside the district for their vocational training and education. Each program prepares students to either enter the workforce immediately after high school or continue their education in college. Many career programs are based on

Beginning with the current school year, the district is under the guidance of new leadership featuring Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Graham, Chief Financial Officer Daniel Bowman and Executive Director of Operations and Information Systems Mike Hartenstein. a partnership with Cuyahoga Community College’s Western Campus, providing students a seamless four-year education culminating with the awarding of an Associates Degree. Gifted elementary students are served at their respective buildings by specially trained members of the teaching staff. Instruction is designed to promote analytical thinking, creativity, and an ongoing respect and desire for learning. Special education students, including the orthopedically handicapped, partially-sighted and hearing impaired, are served at all grade levels beginning with the First Step Pre-School. assistance for K-12 students and night classes are available for adults as well. Byers Field at Robert M. Boulton Stadium remains the second largest athletic stadium in Cuyahoga County, exceeded only by Cleveland Browns Stadium. The all-weather field and track, a state-ofthe-art video display board and upgraded facilities make Byers Field a destination location for many area football teams, soccer teams, and track teams. Along with the district’s three high schools, Byers Field at Robert M. Boulton Stadium is also home to the 2008 Ohio high school state football champion St. Ignatius Wildcats. As we continue to look for ways to meet the changing needs of our students while keeping an eye on our long-standing traditions, the Parma Board of Education, the district administration, the teaching staff and the support staff are proud to serve the families and communities of Parma, Parma Heights and Seven Hills.

Cooking Made Easy Stock up on Healthy Staples

F

inding the time to cook has become a challenge in today’s time-crunched culture, especially in homes where both parents work. In fact, Americans are spending roughly half of their food budgets in restaurants, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. As a result, families are consuming more calories, saturated fat, and sodium — and putting their health at risk. Cooking doesn’t have to be time-consuming, challenging, or expensive. The trick is stocking up on some simple yet versatile staples: 1) Wholewheat pasta, 2) beans, 3) frozen mixed vegetables (especially broccoli), 4) boneless and skinless chicken breasts, 5) frozen fruit, 6) canola oil, 7) brown rice, 8) oatmeal, 9) low-fat cheese, and 10) egg substitute. Try to have these

ingredients on hand because they’re easy to store and they make healthy recipes. Here are a few quick and healthy ideas: Vegetables over whole-wheat pasta makes a quick meal or side dish; fresh or frozen vegetables baked with skinless chicken breasts seasoned with your favorite herbs; broth or tomato-based soups that you add vegetables, canned beans and chicken or fish to, served with crusty bread and low fat cheese; A veggie wrap with roasted vegetables and low-fat cheese rolled up in a whole-wheat tortilla; substitute brown rice for white rice in your favorite Chinese and Mexican dishes and keep frozen fruit in your freezer so you can whip up a thick, slushy smoothie for a quick breakfast or a healthy dessert.

Celebrates 50 Years

P

arma Community General Hospital was born 50 years ago, arising from a critical need for hospital beds. A population boom in the 1950s throughout the southwestern suburbs – with Parma growing 152 percent and Parma Heights expanding by 256 percent in less than a decade – fueled the campaign for a community hospital to care for the growing number of residents. “Building a hospital in this part of Southwest Cleveland is a most worthwhile challenge,” notes the literature published in 1958 as part of the campaign to raise support for the hospital. “It is a rare endeavor, if not the only endeavor, where several communities have joined hands for a common civic improvement beneficial to each.” Parma Hospital opened its doors in August 1961 as a 200-bed hospital with a large maternity department and modern operating, radiology and physical rehabilitation units. Within a few years it was fully accredited and joined the Cleveland Hospital Council. By 1974, ground was broken for an $11.4 million addition that included expansion of the ground and first floors and a three-floor tower that held a new Intensive Care Unit, a Coronary Care Unit and two critical care stepdown units. Just five years after that addition, a $30.7 million twostory expansion led to new surgery and administration suites. Campus expansion occurred during the next decade with construction of medical office buildings and leasing of the former Fay Junior High School on State Road. This Health Education Center allowed the hospital to provide ElderCenter adult day services with multiple programs, a Child Care Center for hospital employees and the public, award-winning Home Health Care, and an EMS Education Program that has served the region’s safety services for the past 25 years. The 1990s were the beginning of a remarkable period of growth at Parma Hospital. From adding the Pain Center and expanding the inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Center to modernizing the Small Wonders Maternity Center and adding the Behavioral Center for Older Adults, a geriatric psychiatric unit, the hospital began reaping accolades both regionally and nationally. Parma Hospital won its first of numerous awards for excellence in orthopedics the year before the 1999 opening of The Heart Center, a cardiovascular intensive care unit that would garner its own array of awards, including the 100 Top Hospitals for Cardiovascular Care more than once and the fastest heart attack care in the region through the Code STEMI program. Oncology care in a community setting began at Parma Hospital in 2000, and the following year a Residential Hospice opened on Pleasant Valley Lake. In the past decade, Parma Hospital also enlarged its Emergency Department, adding an innovative Doc at the Door program for efficient triage, and expanded its ICU. Outpatient radiology services were brought 16

to both Ridge Park Square in Brooklyn and WellPointe Pavilion, a gem of outpatient services also offering therapy and lab services and physician offices in Broadview Heights. Parma Community General Hospital’s founders remained firm that this new institution be community based. Terrence G. Deis, Parma Hospital’s president and CEO, is proud that the hospital has flourished as a community partner. In January, Parma Hospital was honored by the Parma Area Chamber of Commerce with a Golden Pride Award for its special contributions to the community. A gala celebration of the hospital’s anniversary will be held on June 18 at Embassy Suites in Independence.

“I’m very proud of our organization and the accolades we receive nationally, regionally and locally,” said Deis. “Such awards are a tribute to the hard work and integrity of our employees, management and medical staff. At Parma Hospital, treating you better really does begin with knowing you better, and we find it an honor to care for our neighbors, family and friends. “We will continue to deliver our brand of excellent, personalized care. We look forward to the next half century.”

ifty years ago, the six surrounding communities of Parma, Parma Heights, Seven Hills, Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights and North Royalton founded Parma Community General Hospital. Today, it is the only remaining independent, notfor-profit, community hospital in Cuyahoga County. The Parma Area Chamber of Commerce recognized Parma Community General Hospital with a Golden Pride Award for its 50 years of service to the people of its founding communities and beyond in January of 2011. “This was already going to be a golden year for our Hospital, as we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary this summer, but now it is doubly golden,” said Terrence G Deis, Parma Hospital’s president & CEO, in accepting the award. “It is a Pride award we are being honored with, but it is we who are proud – proud to have served our community for nearly 50 years. “All of us at the Hospital – the physicians, employees, and the auxiliary – think of ourselves as members of the community caring for members of the community, so to be recognized by the business community in this way is very special to us.” In presenting the award, Steve Millard, president & executive director of COSE, the Council of Smaller Enterprises, noted that Parma Hospital: has been recognized as one of the 20 Best Community Hospitals in America; has been recognized for providing the fastest heart attack care in Northeast Ohio; is accredited by the Commission on Cancer; and has earned

Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval distinction for both its orthopedic and stroke programs. “With 321 beds, a medical staff of more than 500 physicians, numerous outpatient facilities and a whole continuum of care to support the health needs of the local community, Parma Hospital has remained committed to providing excellent, personalized, care,” said Mr. Millard. Several members of Parma Hospital’s Administration and Board of Directors attended the gala. Board members in attendance included: Board Chairman Kent Geist of Parma Heights; First Vice Chairman David Nedrich of North Royalton, who also serves as CEO of the Chamber; John H. Bundy of Brooklyn; Jack C. Krise Jr., Sharon Martin and JoAnn Mason of Parma; and Joe Tal of Parma Heights. In the 30-year history of the Pride Awards, the Golden Pride Award has only been given to one other area employer. General Motors received the award in 2005. Parma Recreation has Something for Everyone

T

he year looks to be a very challenging, yet exciting time for the City of Parma’s Recreation Department. We are very fortunate to have an administration that values the importance of recreation for our fine city and its residents. The philosophy of the Recreation Department in the City of Parma is one of safety, participation and sportsmanship and these will be the guidelines being adhered to within the department. We encourage active participation and family enjoyment of the City of Parma’s facilities and recreation programs that service all our residents, youngsters to seniors. Parma is host to numerous activities throughout the year for all ages. Some of these activities include swimming, golfing, ice skating, fishing, walking trails and in the summer months band concerts. We also have our recreational sports programs for children through adults.

As a growing city, we are constantly looking to expand our programs and offer alternative forms of recreation to our residents. One way we are doing this is by providing an 18 Hole Disc Golf Course at Veterans Memorial Park that can be utilized by the entire family. We are very proud of our newest program called Parma Pride. This program is offered to individuals with physical and mental limitations that inhibit them from participating in traditional recreational programs. The Parma Recreation Department is pleased and honored to be a part of a City that offers its residents many amenities and recreational activities for all ages. The City of Parma takes pride by offering the best in recreation in the area. We look forward in seeing you throughout the year! Form An Alliance To Offer More Value

he Parma Area Chamber of Commerce and the Council of Smaller Enterprises (COSE) have formed an alliance that will benefit area businesses that are members of both organizations. Through a special joint membership agreement, businesses in Parma, Parma Heights and Seven Hills can now join both organizations and save $150 or more on what it would have cost to join each of them separately. As a result of this unique partnership, area businesses will now get valuable exposure and resources in their local communities, while also getting the regional reach and buying power of COSE and its 15,000+ members. Plus, they will also get a bigger voice and a stronger advocate in City Hall, Columbus and Washington D.C. We are very excited about partnering with COSE and being able to deliver more value and resources for our members. We’ve always done a great job of delivering value to our members in our local community but now COSE brings more ways for members to connect, save and learn, and it gives us a much needed voice on important state and federal advocacy issues.

This alliance is in addition to our efforts to work with other chambers in our region to offer additional networking and learning opportunities for our members. The Parma Area Chamber of Commerce also offers numerous benefits through membership in the Northern Ohio Area Chambers of Commerce (NOACC). Businesses can receive discounts from many different types of providers such as health insurance, workers compensation, utilities, and logistics. Going forward, we will sharpen our focus on advocating for appropriate public policies, encouraging entrepreneurship, serving small businesses and building regional partnerships. We will continue to partner with local governments, chambers and other organizations that can help us to continue to increase the value we deliver to our members.
