tance programs offered by the City of Solon. With an emphasis on small businesses, some of the programs are available to businesses of all sizes, both existing and new to Solon. Under the Get Started in Solon program, new businesses with 1-20 employees receive a welcome to Solon gift to get them off to a good start – a voucher for $200 worth of office supplies. Solon-based Integrated Business Supplies, a fullservice provider of office supplies, computers and computer

supplies, is partnering with the City to provide this benefit. The City and Solon Chamber of Commerce teamed up to create Get Savings, a program for businesses that are new to Solon and existing businesses that relocate or expand within Solon. Upon receiving a certificate of occupancy from the City, businesses also receive an enrollment form that may be returned to the Chamber for special discounts on business services and products provided by Chamber members. Businesses may take advantage of these special discounts from a list of more than thirty vendors for four months, whether or not they are Chamber members. Rounding out the Get Growing in Solon offerings is Get Connected, which provides voice and data communications consulting services for prospective and existing businesses, as well as property owners with available space, that need assistance analyzing their telecommunications needs and options for service. Commtrol, a voice and data advocacy firm, meets with clients to evaluate their needs and provides

In its first year, Get Connected assisted five businesses. Inspired by services often associated with business incubators, Get Growing in Solon seeks to assist new and existing Solon businesses without incurring the overhead expenses of operating an incubator. Serving in the

Line of Fire Solon Fire Rescue serves approximately 24,000 citizens,

covering 20.6 square miles as well as serving the 2.7 square miles of the neighboring village of Glenwillow. The City has Mutual Aid available from all Cuyahoga County Fire Departments as well as neighboring departments in Geauga, Portage, and Summit counties. The Solon Fire Department was organized in 1924 as a volunteer department and has grown into a modern firefighting/ paramedic operation. The City offers a high level of safety to its citizens by providing a career fire department operating from three modern fire stations equipped with the highest quality fire equipment. Station #1 is located at 5595 Harper Rd., Station #2 at 6320 SOM Center Rd., and Station #3 at 7401 SOM Center Road. The Fire Administration and Fire Prevention Bureau offices are located in Station 1. Forty-two firefighters are led by a Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, three Battalion Chiefs and thirteen Lieutenants. The Fire Department also employs a fulltime secretary. The minimum staffing Fire Chief William Shaw each day is thirteen personnel. The strategically placed stations and staffing allow firefighters to control most fires in their infancy before major damage can occur. The majority of the staff are also State of Ohio certified paramedics delivering Advanced Life Support level of care to the ill and injured. Perhaps the strongest quality of the fire service is the ability to define problems and invent workable solutions for those problems. Flexibility, adaptability and innovation have long been terms used to describe the fire service. Throughout the history of our department, the challenges faced have changed dramatically, yet one thing remains the same – the dedication of Solon Fire Rescue personnel to provide the highest level of service possible. 2 0 1 1 - 2 0 12 Solon Magazine

Why Quality Families Choose to Live in Solon Take a look inside the Solon

Schools and you will see the promise and accomplishments of Solon students. This achievement is a key reason why so many people choose to live in Solon and send their children to the Solon Schools. There is a collective expectation for our students – and each year it seems the students in this community rise to meet those academic challenges with increasingly higher levels of achievement. This year, Solon students earned the number one ranking from the state of Ohio’s Department of Education with a performance index score of 110.5, the highest score ever recorded. This measure is important, because it is a weighted measure of achievement over time. Such superior achievement levels do not happen by accident. They are planned and are a direct reflection of the district’s commitment to “every student, every day” and shared accountability by every stakeholder in the district to do whatever is necessary to meet students’ needs.

Solon teachers have worked hard to align our curriculum to the state’s rigorous academic content standards while simultaneously embracing and implementing research-based best teaching practices in their classrooms. As our staff has evolved into an effective professional learning community, we have seen a corresponding rise in student achievement. These results validated the staff’s efforts and demonstrated in practice what the research was telling us: Student achievement cannot occur in the absence of teaching learning. Equally important, our students excel outside the classroom as well. What truly makes our schools such an exemplary place to learn for students is the belief that the three A’s – Academics, Arts and Athletics – share emphasis in the district. The high achievement of our students in academics, arts and athletics is what draws families to Solon who share those values and commitment to excellence.

At the end of their tenure in the Solon Schools, our graduates have accomplished much more than just meet the minimum requirements for graduation. In their own ways, they distinguish themselves and leave their mark on the district academically, athletically, musically and through many other commitments to extra-curricular activities and to the community at-large. For example, the current class of 2011 embraced academic excellence. It counts among its members a record 21 National Merit Finalists, 15 National Merit Commended Scholars and one National Achievement Scholar. This group is aggressively pursuing further education at many of the nation’s most prestigious Solon High School s quartet, Fourever, won 4th place in the International Sweet colleges and universities. Solon ER of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center is Your Community Source for Emergency Medicine By Robert Wilder, M.D. Medical Director, Solon ER

All the Comforts of Home

As the seasons change, there are inevitably “emergencies” that arise: sprains, broken bones, bug bites, cuts and other unexpected events that require a trip to the emergency room. When ice packs, elevation and Tylenol, or Benadryl are not enough to solve the problem, or if you find yourself needing a prescription, x-ray, or other test, remember the Solon ER of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center has a fully-equipped emergency department right in your community. We’ve changed names a few times over our 30 years, but we’ve always been your Solon ER. If that illness or injury turns out to be something more serious, we can make arrangements for admission to the hospital of your choice. The lab and x-ray facilities in our building also provide outpatient services that any doctor can order. From physical therapy, occupational therapy and occupational medicine, you’ll find a wide variety of medical services and physician offices, including orthopedics, neurosurgery and women’s health services. If you’ve never had occasion to need our services, stop by the next time you’re heading down Solon Road—we’re just across from the police station. Our building administrator, Betty Hickle, will be there to greet you and give you a tour. Or you can reach her at 216-937-3903 with any questions. The Solon ER is available 24/7 for emergencies and other medical services. Call 440-349-CARE.

It’s Summer! Have Fun, But Be Safe Playing outside and getting fresh

air, sunshine and exercise are crucial to a child’s health. Luckily, summer is the easiest time to find healthy outdoor activities that are fun for the entire family, such as biking, hiking and canoeing. Keep in mind that young children may enjoy playing games, including Simon Says or Red Light/Green Light, while toddlers can improve their motor skills through jumping, skipping or walking. Whatever activity you choose, make sure it’s enjoyable. It might take time to find something for everyone, but the important thing is to be active and have fun. Kids should aim for an hour of heart-healthy daily activity, while toddlers need a half-hour.

18

2 0 1 1 -2012 S ol on M a ga zin e

Anything to get the heart rate up is beneficial. Once you choose an activity, safety is the first priority. Match the protective equipment to the activity and make sure it fits and is properly fastened. Equipment, such as life jackets, pads, helmets and mouth guards, are the safest way to prevent an injury. And don’t forget the sunscreen. Discussing your child’s activities at your annual pediatric visit is an important step in managing their exercise. Your pediatrician can help find ways to safely increase activity levels; especially if there is concern your child may not be as active as they should be. Your pediatrician can also discuss important summertime safety tips. For additional details on safe, healthy activities or a list of local, board-certified pediatricians, contact Akron Children’s Hospital at 330-543-1000 or visit www.akronchildrens.org

Keeping Your Skin Healthy for Life By Dr. Monique S. Cohn, Advanced Dermatology

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the

United States. Each year over one million cases are diagnosed. The bad news is: skin cancer can be very dangerous and even deadly if left untreated. The good news is: if detected and treated early, skin cancer is almost always completely curable. There are many ways to minimize the risk of developing skin cancer. Using sunscreen during times of sun exposure and avoiding tanning beds are the best preventions. It is also extremely important to do regular skin self exams to detect new or changing growths. Warning signs of skin cancer include sores that are slow to heal, sudden changes of existing moles, new moles that develop after the age of 30, translucent growths with rolled edges, scaling pink or red growths, and dark streaks under the fingernails. Be sure and see a board certified dermatologist to evaluate any suspicious moles that exhibit any of these conditions.

22

2 0 1 1 -2012 S ol on M a ga zin e

There is an ABCDE rule to remember for the symptoms of the most dangerous form of skin cancer called melanoma:

Asymmetry

Border Irregularity

Color Variability

Diameter

A – Asymmetry: One side is different than the other side B – Borders: The edges of the mole are irregular C – Color within the mole is uneven and may include brown, black, tan and clear areas D – Diameter: Greater than 6mm in size (the size of a pencil eraser) E – Evolving or changing growths

A complete professional skin exam will detect any cancerous or pre-cancerous growths. Most are easy and painless to remove. And that’s great news!

Homes & Real Estate

Solon m a g a z i n e

Dream the American Dream ...in Solon put a high value on owning real estate. “The land is good. Be not hesitant to go, and to enter to possess the land.” – Judges 18:9, Old Testament. Very little has changed today. It is still the American dream to own a home. However, some people have become disillusioned with home ownership as a result of the challenging market that we have experienced over the last few years. But the market is stabilizing in Solon. The average sale price in 2009 was $288,499. The average sale price in 2010 was $301,755. Many buyers are choosing Solon to achieve their own dream. They are coming from all over the country, from nearby cities and from our own community. It’s not difficult to see why. We have a wide range of housing values. Currently there are 203 homes for sale in the city ranging from $59,000 to $1,995,000. Sellers have become well-educated in the value of preparing their homes for the market. The homes on the market now are in better condition than ever and are priced competitively. Interest rates continue to be historically low. Also, we have one of the highest rated school districts in the state as well as state-of-the-art facilities such as: the Solon Community Center; the Cuyahoga County Library Solon Branch; the Solon Police Station, fire stations, and excellent medical services; the Solon Center for the Arts in the historic Old City Hall; the Senior Center, and the list goes on. But we have more than that, we have great people.

Parks & Recreation

Play Time!

The mission of the Recreation Department is to provide

for the leisure needs of all the citizens of Solon. The department strives to enhance the quality of life in the city by offering active and passive recreation programs in a clean, safe and appealing environment to youth, teens, adults and senior citizens. These programs take place at Solon’s own Community Center, Solon Community Park, or on the campus of nearby schools. Each program is guided by competent and courteous staff members.

The Solon Community Park, located at 6679 SOM Center Road, has many different aspects of outdoor activities for residents to indulge in. The main attraction to the park is the ten widely spread baseball fields where daily games are played. To accommodate fans, we have a concession stand open during the hours of the games. Also available at the Community Park near the fields are two separate accessible playground areas that have a wide variety of features for children of all ages. The park also offers a large pavilion that can accommodate large crowds for a variety of events. The pavilion is available for reservation to Solon residents for almost any special occasion. Near the pavilion is the sand volleyball area with two separate courts for residents to use. Timberlake Park is a more remote area for people to gather under pavilions, play on the playgrounds, or in the wide open playing areas. The park is located off Root Road in Bainbridge. After entering the serene environment, there are two pavilions which oversee a large lake. The larger pavilion holds 100-200 people and the smaller pavilion holds 50-75 people. The lake is stocked and awaits your fishing skills with bluegill, bass, catfish and sunfish in the nearly four acres of water. Bring your fishing gear and enjoy the fantastic views. Timberlake Park is closed November 1 - April 1 annually.

For more information on the numerous programs offered, please visit www.solonohio.org or call the Recreation Department at 440-248-5747.

Before You Board Your Dog At some point, you will probably need to leave your

dog behind while you travel. Though it is not easy, you want to be sure your dog has a safe, comfortable place to stay while you are gone and gets plenty of exercise. Whether you’re considering boarding your dog or looking for dog day care, ask your friends and your vet who they recommend. Then, call several boarding kennels to learn more. Here are some questions dog owners commonly ask before making a boarding reservation for their dog. • Where will my dog stay? • How long will my dog be in a cage? • What can I bring for my dog? • How often will my dog be walked? • What will my dog eat? • Will my dog be allowed to interact with other dogs? • How much is this going to cost? • What happens if my dog becomes sick or injured? Stop by and take a tour of the facility you’re considering so that you can see the operation and view the boarded pups and attendants in action or, better yet, set up an interview day for your pup. The interview is a great way for the staff and your best friend to get to know each other prior to their stay. Now, Relax! You’ve done your research and your dog is in good hands. Enjoy your vacation! —Donna Novak, Camp Bow Wow, Bedford Heights Ohio

Teaching Tolerance Tolerance is more than a word. Tolerance, according to 13-year-old Justin Bachman, who has Tourette Syndrome, is an event. With help from his family and some very special friends, Justin set out to create the first annual Tolerance Fair which was held on March 13, 2011 at the Solon Recreation Center. His goal was to have 15 charitable organizations demonstrate how people could make a difference in their community by doing volunteer work. The real result? Justin convinced 48 organizations to participate. It was an event so popular and powerful that more than 1,000 people attended. The fair featured a very diverse group of charitable organizations that offered opportunities for people to learn about a very wide range of ways they could get involved. The fair also featured a number of advocacy groups. Those groups were there to show people who feel different for any reason how they could find support or people in similar situations. Attendees were very excited to learn and many visited multiple tables. Some were able to experience life in a wheelchair by navigating an obstacle course or participating in a game of wheelchair basketball. Many people at the fair described the

atmosphere as “electric.” The fair was capped off by an inspirational speech by international speaker, Marc Elliot. Marc discussed his way of living called “Live and Let Live.” He suggested that it is human nature for people to make assumptions about others; however, what is important is that people not take action on those assumptions. The bottom line, he indicated, is that you never really know what is going on with someone. People left the fair feeling highly upbeat and with the knowledge that it is perfectly fine to be different. Solon is and always will be a city of Tolerance.
