City Overview

Family Friendly and Growing By Ken McEntee

“If you want to expose your kids to everything, Solon has it all,” says Michele Sues, a real estate agent and owner of the Michele Sues Team at Howard Hanna’s local office. “We have arts and sports here. The schools are wonderful.

2

If your child is scholastically talented or if your child struggles, there is something in our schools to enrich their experience. For most families, our excellent schools are the reason to move to Solon.” Sues is passionate about the City. “I’ve lived in Solon for a long time and I raised four children here,” she says. “I have invested emotionally and financially in the City.” Many others have done the same in the City of about 23,000 residents. That’s why Solon earned top placement last year among Businessweek.com’s seventh annual list of great small towns in which to raise kids. Businessweek evaluated more than 3,200 communities across America with populations ranging between 5,000 and 50,000 before selecting Solon Number 1. For good measure, Cleveland Magazine selected Solon as the No. 2 suburb in Northeast Ohio in its annual “Rating the Suburbs” feature. The accolades don’t surprise Councilman William D. Mooney. “We have great facilities for residents, like the Center for the Arts and our Community Center,” Mooney points out. “We’re very fortunate to have a tax base that allows us to provide

fantastic services and do a lot of things that other cities can’t do. We respond very well to any resident’s issues.” Mooney credits the City’s Economic Development program for much of the City’s success. Even during rough economic times, Solon continues to attract new businesses into its industrial park, while many existing businesses have expanded in the past year. Major additions over the last couple of years included the relocation of Techtron Systems Inc. and MRI Software LLC to the City. The top employers in Solon are Swagelok Co., with almost 2,700 employees and Nestlé Prepared Foods Co., with 1,900 employees. Nestlé is planning a new $50 million Research and Development Center. “The vacancy rate in our industrial area is less than 7 percent, which is way below the average for the country and for this area,” Mooney says. Sues says Solon’s diverse population and diverse housing stock also make the City attractive to residents. “We have homes listed from the low $60,000s all the way to $8 million,” she says. Sues adds that residents enjoy retail diversity as well.

The redevelopment of Solar Shopping Center into Solon Village has changed the face of retail in the City. More change is in store after Giant Eagle opens its massive new Market District supermarket

in the summer of 2013. “We have plenty of shopping opportunities available,” Sues says. “You never have to leave the City if you don’t want to.”

Efficient Service with a Smile The skilled work force of the Solon Service Department is divided into 6 divisions with one director, six managers and more than 70 employees. Located at 6600 Cochran Road, the department maintains city streets, cemeteries, sewers, storm water, and garbage and recycling collections, as well as houses the majority of the City’s fleet. They are available for snow and ice operations, severe storms, leaf collection or any other issue that Solon residents may face. The Service Department also educates the public on the benefits of recycling, taking care of the environment, watersheds and the care and maintenance of trees and greenery. The Department holds an annual Earth Day Celebration where a community-wide document shred is offered, the “Go Green” house is featured, and residents can learn about proper drainage methods. They also participate in Home Days, with a rain garden how-to program. An annual open house gives residents the opportunity to see operations firsthand. More information on the Service Department or it’s programming can be obtained by calling the department directly at 440-248-5834 or visiting them via the city’s website at www.solonohio.org w w w. Bird Technologies Celebrates 70 Years of Helping Others Be Heard Loud and Clear Innovative Global Supplier of RF Communications Products adds Longevity to List of Accomplishments As a pioneer & leader in radio frequency (RF) communications dating back to the ‘40s, Bird Technologies is excited to be at the forefront of yet another remarkable and enviable accomplishment: the celebration of its 70th year in business. Founded in 1942 by J. Raymond Bird, the Bird Technologies’ name is synonymous with innovation in RF communications. With nearly 50 patents under its wings and installations in over 130 countries around the globe, Bird has continued to innovate its radio frequency products, systems, services, and educational solutions. From the historic Model J. Raymond Bird, Founder 43 Thruline Directional Wattmeter, which put Bird on the RF communications map in the early 50s, to its inventive new 7020 Series Power Sensor, the Bird name stands for RF performance and expertise. “We’ve always believed in developing and producing reliable RF communications products that stand the test of time. It’s built into every Bird product from product design through our vertically integrated manufacturing and test

facilities and our accredited calibration lab. It lives up to what Mr. Bird envisioned when he first started the company,” reminisces Bird President and CEO, Mark Johnson. In many markets, Bird’s 43 Wattmeter still remains the standard against which all other wattmeters are measured. And, with its latest acquisition of X-COM Systems, Bird continues to look forward in its pursuit of offering the very finest RF measurement and management solutions. In fact, the products and services offered by Bird have continued to expand over the past 70 years to meet the challenges of today’s complex communications systems. In addition to its wattmeters and power sensors, Bird’s full line of RF products include analyzers, antennas, combining systems, duplexers and triplexers, power monitors, signal boosters, tower top amplifiers and receivers, multi-couplers, and a host of RF accessories. Bird rounds out its product and service offering through its acquisition of X-COM Systems and TX RX in 2010 and 1995, respectively.

Celebrating 50 Years at Bird Technologies: Congratulations to Quentin Battiest! Born and raised in Oklahoma, he moved to Ohio after high school and graduated from Griswold Institute in Cleveland as an Industrial Electronic Technician. Academic Success Doesn’t Happen by Chance in Solon Throughout the Solon Schools,

The Solon Schools’ district mission is rooted in the commitment and belief that all students can and will learn. Resources of time and commitment are expended to put in place the structure necessary to ensure all students attain the skills and knowledge they need to meet and exceed standards and achieve their full potential. In Professional Learning Communities across grade levels and content areas, Solon teachers and

administrators engage in a carefully cultivated culture of collaborative planning and problem solving – all with an eye toward student achievement gains. Our teachers collaborate to analyze individual student assessment results and strategically plan and change their instructional practices. Using the collective expertise of their colleagues and the data as a guide, teachers are better able to ensure that all students, whether they are struggling, need more challenges or just need a little support to master the content or skill, will learn. Solon teachers are continually using formative assessment to refine the way they teach to impact learning for each student. They regularly check on student progress utilizing a variety of formative assessments and are finding marked success in using a student-response system that enables them to check for understanding and subsequently differentiate instruction based on that data in real-time. Teachers must be good classroom managers to expertly differentiate on the spot. But this is the expectation in every Solon classroom because it yields improved achievement results. Solon’s high ratings and rankings do not happen by chance. They are the result of a continuous commitment to quality improvement and doing whatever it takes for all students.

SOLON NATIVE LIVES HIS DREAM OF BUILDING SOLON ORTHODONTICS

L

ong before Philip D. Bomeli, DDS, MS, began attending dental school in Columbus, he knew he wanted to establish his orthodontics practice in Solon.

“Members of my family have lived in this community since 1906,” Dr. Bomeli says. “My great-grandparents, grandparents and parents all grew up or spent the majority of their lives in Solon, and so have I. It was obvious to me that I would return to live and work here.” His dream became a reality with the opening of Solon Orthodontics in July 2008. The practice accommodates orthodontic patients of all ages and features the latest advances and techniques. Examples include high-tech alloy wires that move teeth more efficiently and comfortably, clear ceramic braces to provide an aesthetic alternative to traditional metal braces, Invisalign® clear aligners that are almost invisible, and all-digital x-ray imaging and photography for more accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Solon Orthodontics is located at 6370 SOM Center Road, Suite 101, Solon. Early morning, evening and Saturday appointments are available.

Dr. Bomeli is a graduate of Orange High School. He then graduated from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana and received his dental degree and orthodontic training at The Ohio State University. He is an active member of the American Dental Association, Ohio Dental Association, Greater Cleveland Dental Society, the Cleveland Society of Orthodontists and the American Association of Orthodontists. City Overview Health & Wellness

Great Skin For Life ~ Dr. Monique Cohn, Advanced Dermatology

There was a time when all women did to fight the anti-aging battle was put on cold cream at night. Now, the bathroom is full of products that all have their own separate claims, including “anti-aging”. However, no product in a jar or bottle can stop you from getting older, so what does “anti-aging” mean?

What Is Aging?

Aging of skin takes place as a result of some of these factors: • Sun Exposure • Smoking & Alcohol • Volume & Collagen Loss • Lack of Proper Nutrition

What Can You Do?

The most important way to slow down the signs of aging is to moisturize your skin with a high quality product. You don’t need to spend a fortune, but you do need to use a product that has the right nutrients and will protect your skin from the sun and other environmental factors. Everyone has their own skin issues, so look for products that target those issues.

J. Raymond Bird, Founder

12

2 0 1 3 -2 014 S ol on, O hi o M a g a z in e

When shopping for facial products, look for those that contain antioxidants that attack and disable free radicals that destroy collagen. The most effective include: green tea, vitamins C and E, kinetin, alpha-lipoic acid, idebenone, coffee berry, peptides and tripeptides. Although topicals are great for long-term maintenance and can help diminish the effects of the aging process, procedures are probably still the quickest way to get more dramatic results. Luckily, in-office procedures have come a long way. Today, patients can see immediate results with as little as a few injections. Fillers based in hyaluronic acid (like Restylane or Juvederm) and immobilizers with botulinum toxin (like BOTOX or Dysport) can be used to erase both superficial and deeper lines. Chemical peels, microderm or vibradermabrasion, laser treatments and other procedures can be done to improve overall skin tone, texture and color with minimal downtime. It’s best to see a dermatologist to decide which procedure would be right for you. A dermatologist can evaluate your skin and give you specific information and recommendations you need to be successful in stifling those nasty signs of aging . . . Then you can go into anti-aging combat with the most advanced weapons!

Senior Living

At Ultimate Senior Living of Solon,

The “Ultimate” Choice for Senior Care

we recognize the value of every senior and are guided by our commitment to excellence. Our senior care specialists provide exemplary physical, emotional, and spiritual care for each of our residents’ needs in a home-like environment. For seniors who do not want to live in a larger community setting but still require a level of assistance similar to that offered by an assisted living facility or a nursing home, this is an excellent alternative. Intimate settings allow specialized attention to particular residents’ needs such as diabetes care or special diet concerns, among others. We also specialize in the treatment of Alzheimer

and dementia patients. With 6 locations in Solon, we are the fastest-growing senior care option in the area. As an added benefit, we have also partnered with the Cleveland Clinic at-home care team to provide doctors and nurses around the clock for emergency or scheduled in-home visits. Ultimate Senior Living also offers in-home care to assist seniors that choose to remain in their own home. We can provide a minimum of 4 hours a day for seniors that require help to remain independent within their own home; or a full 24 hours a day for seniors requiring a higher level of assistance. For more information, visit www.ultimateseniorliving.com —Derrick Hoffman, Ultimate Senior Living of Solon

Private duty and skilled home care staff provide personal health care and companionship in the comfort of a senior’s own home.

Home Health Care Helps Seniors Maintain Their Independence Whether you are a senior who needs additional help to maintain your independence, or a working adult trying to care for your parents while caring for your own family, home health care services may be the answer. Home care provides a wide variety of services to help seniors maintain their independence while reducing the stress on them and their families. There are two types of home care services: private duty and skilled home care services. Private duty services include companionship, medication reminders, transportation, shopping, errands, meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, and assistance with personal care. Skilled home care requires a physician’s order to address a medical issue for homebound seniors. The skilled home care team is comprised of nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, medical social workers, dieticians, and state-tested nursing assistants. When selecting a home care agency, ask about their services, employment requirements, background check procedures, employee training program, in-home assessment process, care plan development, supervision of staff, continuity of care, flexibility of scheduling, insurance, payers, and pricing. — Anita Barnoski, MN, RN Executive Director, Family Tree Home Care Services, LLC w w w. Homes & Real Estate

Location... Location... Location! By Michele Sues, Howard Hanna

Have you noticed that there are very few “for sale” signs in your neighborhood? Typically, there are approximately 200 homes for sale in Solon during the spring market. Today, there are only 105 homes for sale, an historically low number. To illustrate the shortage, 14 homes have sold in the Liberty Hill

18

2 0 1 3 -2 014 S ol on, O hi o M a g a z in e

development in the last 12 months; currently there are only 2 homes in the development on the market. If you have been considering selling your home, this is the time to do it. Homes are selling quickly, with many sellers entertaining multiple offers. More than $83 million in real estate was sold in Solon over the past 12 months. The average list price was $311,000 with an average sale price of $290,000. The average price per square foot of homes sold over the last year was $100. Prices of homes currently for sale range from $52,900 to $6,600,000. Interest rates continue to be historically low, but the experts are predicting that rates will be rising in the near future. Buyers are feverishly hunting for the right home for their family in our prestigious 44139 zip code. The sharp increase in the number of buyers and the low inventory of homes for sale is causing a sellers’ market, which is something realtors haven’t seen for the past few years. We recently took a client to view a new listing in The Preserve. Seven other buyers were lined up to view this home and it sold within a few days. Previously, open house activity was very slow, but now open houses are bustling with activity. 12 lookers attended

our most recent open house. Buyers are educated about the market, eager to see every home available for sale. If you are planning to sell, here are some suggestions to prepare your home for a quick sale at the highest price. n A buyer typically decides if your home is right for them in the first 30 seconds. The front walk, landscaping and front door should reflect a lot of pride and attention to detail. n Look around, if you see any wallpaper, remove it. n Pack away those family photos; make room for the buyer to imagine their family in your home. n Throw out the things that you don’t intend to move. n De-clutter and clean, then de-clutter some more… now you’re ready to sell your home! The bottom line is that we have an unusual situation — if you’re planning to sell your home, now is the time to sell and if you’re planning to buy a home, now is the time to buy. In real estate, it is always about location, location, location... Today it is also about opportunity, opportunity, opportunity!
