COUNSELOR - Special Rec/Part Time: The Camp/Club Horizon Counselor is responsible for working “hands on” with all the participants in Camp Horizon (summer day camp) and Club Horizon (after school program). This position will assist with the creating, implementing and supervising of the daily activities of the Camp/Club Horizon program.

John Raymond Hardy

John (JohnZ) Raymond Hardy, 74, of Belvidere, passed away in Rockford on January 9, 2023. He was born December 22, 1948, in the Johnson Creek, Wisconsin area, but more specifically Watertown Hospital, to Jay and Jacquiline Hardy. They moved to Spring Valley, Minnesota, and later to Belvidere, IL, in 1962. John played the trombone in the school bands until he graduated from Belvidere High School in 1967. As a young man John was a road manager for Belvidere’s rock band “The Esquires” in the Belvidere and Champaign, IL areas. He returned to Belvidere to pursue his higher education; graduating from Rock Valley College and Rockford College. He was employed at Green Giant facility for 25 years working in many areas, ending as a shift supervisor. He moved on to Fellowes Manufacturing in Itasca, IL, retiring after 20 years, allowing him to pursue his passion for American history and family genealogy. He is survived by his brother Jim (Leslie) Hardy; nieces, Emily (Matt Martenson) and Jessica (Josh) Kasper with grandnephew, Kace Kasper; brother-in-law, George Wienrank. Predeceased by his parents, sister, JoAnn Wienrank. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, January 21, 2023, from 2:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M. at the Boone County Museum of History, 314 S. Wishing A Happy 85th Birthday To Tom Lacke

Nancy J. Houk

Nancy Houk, 83, entered heaven on January 12, 2023. She was surrounded by her children and passed peacefully at her home. Nancy was the daughter of Clifford (Al) Larson and Virginia Larson. She was the only sister of Gerald (Jerry) Larson, who survives her. Nancy was a blessing to all her family, friends, and many organizations in Boone County. She was an active member of the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois for many decades. Nancy was a fabulous leader and attended almost every parade that involved the Scouts. Nancy always believed in the importance of empowering girls, and served the Girl Scouts for many years. One year she was the cookie coordinator for all of Boone county. A maze of cookie boxes were stacked high through out her home. Her kids thought having all those cookie cases stacked up was awesome!!! Her husband.....not so much.

Nancy was also a loyal member of the First United Presbyterian Church. She often helped with luncheons, fund raising, and Sunday school. Nancy was also the backbone of the church Women’s Guild, spearheading the calendar sales. She always believed strongly that the children’s programs were most important.

Nancy was an active member of Zonta Club of Belvidere. She did her part and always participated in the annual pecan fund raiser. In addition, Nancy was always a big supporter of the Boone County Fair. She often volunteered in the Home Ec building and she baked dozens of entries ever year. She won hundreds of ribbons over her ‘fair lifetime’. She also inspired many family members to participate in the fair. Her enthusiasm for the fair was contagious. All of her family and friends loved eating all her left over baked entries every August.

Nancy was loved by all and will be missed dearly by family, friends, and the organizations where she was a member. Nancy enjoyed spending time with family, going on hay rides, singing songs, reading books, watching parades and her breakfast time with the class of ‘57. She never said no to an adventure with her children or a trip up to the lakes. Nancy could always light up a room with her smile and she was gifted with making people feel comfortable and confident in her presence. She had a legendary laugh and her kids could always find her in the grocery store as she laughed and chatted in the aisles.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Richard (Dick) Houk, her mother Virginia Larson and her father Clifford (Al) Larson.

Nancy is survived by her eight children. Joanne (Matt) Henning, Rick (Therese) Houk, Julie (Kevin) Sampson, Jane (Tom Geordt) Eurek, Cheryl (Tim) Murphy, Carol Parsons, Karen (Bo) Ficula, Russell (Holly) Houk.

Nancy also had 18 grandchildren. Douglas (Elyse) Allen, Gregory (Kathleen) Allen, Bryan (Kayla) Allen, Rachel Roseberry, Madeline (Peter) Weickert, Hannah (Jozef) Szabo, James Sampson, John Sampson, Andrew (Erin) Eurek, Joe (Stephanie) Eurek, Kyle Eurek, Emily (Neal) Peterson, Jack Murphy, Racheal (Devan) Magley, Alexander Ficula, Amy Ficula, Kelsey Houk and Abby Houk.

In addition, Nancy also had 14 great grandchildren. Liam, Charlotte, Theo, Penny, Aeris, Ozias, Henry, Eleanor, Quinn, Evelyn, Ashton, Ava, Bruce, and Logan. Lastly, Arthur the parrot.

Her family that survives her are at peace with the thought her husband, mother and father and every dog she ever owned, will greet her upon her arrival.

A celebration of life is planned for Saturday February 25th at Belvidere Historical Society from 1-4pm. Dan Holmes will be officiating a memorial service from 1-1:30.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be set up in Nancy’s name.

Lois Lorraine Hyser, 85, passed away peacefully, at her farm with her family by her side, on January 13, 2023. She was born on May 8, 1937 in Garden Prairie, IL to Nancy (Cummins) & Erik Carlson. Lois was a dedicated mother, grandmother, great grandmother & great-great grandmother. She was creative & enjoyed many hobbies & different types of work. She loved bowling

& golfing. She was a talented quilter & crochet artist. Lois showcased her talent as a quilter & was often acknowledged with a winning ribbon. She had a tent at the Boone County Fair where she sold Barbie clothes & accessories that she had crafted by hand.

Lois enjoyed her farm life with her husband on their 10acre farm. That farm life instilled work ethic in their children. In the garden they grew pumpkins & various vegetables. She attended community college to educate herself on how to provide the proper care & nutrition for her animals.  At one point they had 14 horses, donkeys, pigs, sheep, & always a dog running through the fields. Later in life she cared for chickens & sold their eggs. She enjoyed genealogy & preserving family history & ancestry.

Lois was devoted to raising her children & supported them in their interests & goals. Lois  baked cookies & volunteered as a room mother at Kishwaukee Grade School. Lois was strong in her convictions & passionate about her work. She spent time as a hairdresser, tax preparation professional, & primarily worked in printing & press work with the Boone County Shopper & Admiral Corporation. She will be missed by many.

She is survived by her children, Tony (Laura “Denise”) Hyser, Michael Hyser, Barbara (Richard) Raczkowski, Donna (Jim) Howland, Nancy (David McCurdy) Hyser, Beth (Elmer) Nelson; 16 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; & 6 great-great grandchildren; brother, Howard (Joyce) Carlson; as well as numerous nieces & nephews & extended family whom she loved dearly & can’t forget about her 9 grand-dogs.

She is predeceased by her husband, Wilbur Hyser; her parents, Erik & Nancy Carlson; daughter, Sandra HyserCooper; son-in-law, Willard “Coop” Cooper; & her brother, William Carlson.

A visitation for Lois will be Wednesday, January 25, at 10 AM at Anderson Funeral Home. Located at 218 W. Hurlbut Ave. Belvidere, IL 61008. A memorial service  will take place following the visitation at 11 AM. Inurnment at Highland Garden of Memories. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Belvidere Food Pantry & Anderson Humane Society in South Elgin, IL.

Larry L. Solchenberger

Larry L. Solchenberger, 76, of Belvidere passed away peacefully December 31, 2022. He was born November 16, 1946 in Hillsboro, Wisconsin. Son to Peter and Maude (Shields) Solchenberger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothersRalph, James, and Dennis; sisters - Judy and Donna.

He is survived by brothers - Ervin Solchenberger, Ray Fiske, Jr.; sisters - Janice (Ken) Anderson, Linda (Charles) Morrow, Diane Johns and Dawn (Larry) Thomas. Also several nieces and nephews.

He will be dearly missed.
