Get To Know Jack Of The Lantern The toothy grins of jack-o’-lanterns are as much a part of Halloween as candy corn & costumes. Even though these carved pumpkins have become synonymous with Halloween, the festive gourds weren’t always tied to the October holiday. The history behind jack-o’-lanterns is not entirely known & there are multiple origin stories, but people may have been making these carvings for centuries.

One tale traces the origin back to Ireland & a popular Irish myth. According to History.com, the tradition involves a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack.” As the story goes, Stingy Jack invited the devil to share a drink with him. Being the cheapskate his name implies, Jack didn’t want to pay for the drinks, & he convinced the devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy the beverages. After the devil transformed, Stingy Jack instead pocketed the money & placed it next to a silver cross, which prevented the devil from changing back into his original form.

Jack made the devil promise that should Jack die, he wouldn’t claim his soul. Eventually Jack freed the devil, but not before he tricked him again with another con.

When Stingy Jack eventually died, legend states God would not allow such a trickster & unsavory character into heaven. The devil could not claim Jack’s soul as promised, but he was upset by the tricks Jack had played. In turn, the devil then sent Jack off to wander the dark night infinitely with only a burning coal to light the path.

Stingy Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip & has been traversing the planet ever since. Irish storytellers first began to refer to Jack’s specter as “Jack of the Lantern” which was shortened to “Jack O’Lantern.”

There are other origin stories regarding jack-o’-lanterns. Some say the term originated in 17th century Britain, where it was often customary to call men whose names were unknown a common moniker like “Jack.” Night watchmen who carried lanterns might have been called “Jack with the lantern.” Other theories connect jack-o’lanterns to the Celtic pagan practice of hallowing out root vegetables & carving them with grotesque faces.

Illuminated by coal or candles, these items served to ward off evil spirits. When settlers came from Europe to America, where turnips & other root vegetables were scarce, they used native pumpkins instead.

Jack-o’-lanterns are often seen lighting up the Halloween night. There are various theories regarding the origins of the carved gourds. While the truth may never be fully known, it’s fun to learn about the various origin stories connected to this popular symbol of Halloween.

Is 3D Mammography Right For You? Mammograms take images of breast tissue to determine the presence of abnormalities, including lumps. Women may undergo traditional, 2D mammograms, but increasingly many healthcare facilities are now employing 3D technology because it can provide clearer pictures.

A 3D mammogram, also called digital tomosynthesis, takes several different X-rays of the breasts & combines those images to establish a three-dimensional picture. The Mayo Clinic says that a 3D mammogram is typically used to search for breast cancer in people who may have no outward signs or symptoms. It also may be used to help diagnose the cause of a breast mass or nipple discharge. Doctors may suggest 3D imaging to get a better look at any growths or help identify the source of any symptoms a person may be concerned about.

Two-dimensional mammograms are still the industry standard. The 3D versions are obtained in a similar fashion by pressing the breasts between two imaging plates. Rather than just taking images from the sides & top to bottom, the 3D version will take multiple angles to make a digital recreation of the breast. Medical News Today says this enables doctors to look at small, individual sections of the breast tissue that may be as thin as just a single millimeter.

A study published in the journal JAMA Oncology says cancer detection rates are higher in people who do 3D imaging over time. Three-dimensional mammograms can be useful for women with dense breast tissue or those at higher risk for breast cancer. Although experts at MD Anderson Cancer Center advise any woman who needs a mammogram to get the 3D version. However, 3D mammography may not be covered by all insurance plans.

It’s important to note that a 3D mammogram releases the same amount of radiation as a traditional mammogram. It is of no greater risk to the patient, & it is approved by the Food & Drug Administration. Also of note, because 3D mammograms produce more images, it may take a radiologist a little longer to read one than it would a 2D mammogram. 3D mammograms are an option for women screening for breast cancer.

Why The Flu Shot Is So Important In 2020 Millions of people across the globe get flu shots each year. Flu shots protect against influenza, but they might provide even greater benefits in 2020.

As the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, it’s imperative that people everywhere take every step necessary to protect themselves & others. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention notes that a flu vaccine will not protect people against COVID-19. However, flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of illness related to the flu.

Those illnesses weaken immune systems, making people more vulnerable to other viruses, including COVID-19.

Flu vaccines have also been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization. That’s a significant benefit of being vaccinated, as people who get their flu shots can indirectly help hospitals conserve potentially scarce resources.

As the COVID-19 virus rapidly spread late in the winter of 2019-20, many hospitals across the country & even the globe were stretched incredibly thin. So anything ordinary citizens can do to alleviate such burdens can help save lives while also making hospital workers’ jobs easier & less stressful.

Many people may be concerned about going out & getting a flu shot in 2020. That’s especially likely for people who live in communities where the COVID-19 virus is spreading. However, the CDC notes that getting a flu shot in 2020 is an essential part of protecting your health & the health of your family. Many doctor’s offices are now insisting patients wait in their cars until doctors are ready to see them, & masks may be required when entering the doctor’s office. Such measures can reduce the risk of getting the COVID-19 virus when visiting a doctor’s office for a flu shot or another visit, so patients should not be hesitant to receive their vaccinations in 2020.

Patients can follow such protocols even if their doctors are not insisting they do so. The same safety measures can be followed by people who intend to get their flu shots from neighborhood pharmacies.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Drain & rinse canned chickpeas. Spread onto plate or cutting board. Pat dry with a clean towel. Add to small bowl.

Raking, blowing & collecting leaves becomes the primary chores of lawn & yard maintenance, & presents most homeowners with large piles of gathered leaves to tend to.

It is impossible to count just how many leaves fall to the ground each year, or just how many pounds of leaves get collected curbside, but the numbers are substantial.

Cleaning up leaves is considerable work, but not all of those leaves need to be carted away. In fact, there are several different uses of leaves that can be beneficial.

1. Spread leaves as a protective mulch to cover tender perennials or root crops/bulbs in the ground. The leaves will form a natural insulating cover that keeps the soil & the plants within a bit warmer over winter.

2. Create a pile of leaves that will break down & form a crumbly, compost-like material called leaf mold. Even though leaf mold may sound like a blight, it’s actually a good amendment to garden soil, improving its structure & ability to hold water. Leaf mold also attracts beneficial organisms that are vital in healthy soil.

3. Brown leaves can be added to green materials in compost piles to improve the health of the compost being formed. According to the healthy living resource Care2, the ideal ratio is 75% brown - 25% green materials in compost. Turn compost piles regularly to aerate them.

4. Store dried, mulched leaves in a dry spot so they can be used in the spring as a weed barrier for plantings.

They will keep weeds at bay & help retain soil moisture to ensure small sprouts have the resources to grow.

5. Use shredded leaves as a lawn supplement. Pass a lawn mower over leaves left on the lawn to break them down into pieces too small to rake. This will help keep the lawn healthy in the winter without blocking out sunlight.

6. Bag dried leaves & pack them tightly together in cold areas of the home, such as basements or garages. They can act as added insulation. Bags of leaves can be placed around planting containers to protect them from frost.

7. Gather a few of the best-looking leaves & preserve them. Use an iron on a low setting & press leaves between two pieces of waxed paper until the waxed paper seals together. Or use clear contact paper to achieve the same effect.

Fallen leaves can be used in many different ways throughout the year.

The Keen Age Center (KAC) has re-opened on a limited basis. For a calendar of the activities we can safely provide, to view our current newsletter go to https://www.ourseniorcenter.com/ & search for Boone County Council on Aging. New to our activities are some free times or “social hours” where you are welcome to come into KAC to gather in small groups for company & conversation. Our Boone County Health Dept. approved reopening plan limits the number of participants in the facility to 10. To enter the facility, participants must wear masks the entire time & have a temperature check & screening. We are not able to provide food or drinks, but participants can bring their own. All activities require registration, including computer lab & social hours. We have also increased cleaning & sanitation procedures.

We are holding two socially distant events in October. The first is “Autumn is in the Air” a Moose Club drive-thru on October 13, 2020. The price for this fundraising dinner is $15 & includes a delicious Surf & Turf Dinner including bacon-wrapped pork medallion, shrimp, potato, glazed carrots, coleslaw & dinner roll.

This year we will all be doing Halloween a little differently with a Quarantine-o-ween! We are going to try to do this drive-thru style as well. In order to allow for the drive-thru process we will hold the event on two days, October 29th & 30th. We feel confident we can still safely judge costumes while folks are parked in the lot & provide a delicious treat of Edward’s Apple Orchard donuts & cider to help celebrate. Just call & make your reservation, get your costume ready or decorate your car, drive up to the canopy for your treat & enjoy a safe, socially distant Quarantine-o-ween from your car!
