MORDT David SHERIFF
As your sheriff Mordt will:
• Provide a safe community in which to live, work, and play.
• Bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community.
How Mordt will do the above:
• Sheriff’s App- An app that will alert your phone to major incidents like road closures, dangerous public events, and any other critical incidents. It will give real time news releases of significant police calls, scams, and criminal events, and offers easy access to child sex offender registry and other county related resources.
• Civilian Police Academy- Public would be invited to attend classes to learn the various functions of the sheriff’s department. Participants could participate in police related scenarios, ride with a deputy, and spend time touring the jail and dispatch center.
• Neighborhood Watch- Sheriff’s department personnel would attend neighborhood meetings to provide details of what’s happening and what enforcement has taken place in your neighborhood. You’d be given the opportunity to voice concerns regarding your neighborhood and work together to solve those problems.
• Increase patrols throughout the county, including all the towns and Candlewick Lake. Assist and provide support for Belvidere officers by patrolling in high crime areas and performing various traffic details.
• Scenario-based training for personnel- This would include firearms, close quarters (hand to hand) combat, non-lethal weapons, de-escalation tactics, and understanding cultural differences and mentally challenged individuals.
agencies as well as fire departments, ambulances, and the Emergency Management Agency.
• Utilize area resources- Work with groups
those who specialize in helping veterans and the
within the community.

Mayor Clint Morris
Dear Neighbor, I’m writing to you in support of Dave Vella for State Representative in the upcoming 2022 elections. Dave has been State Representative for the past two years, and he has done an incredible amount of work for Belvidere residents and businesses. Dave’s work ethic and service are second to none, and I believe he has earned a second term as State Representative.
Dave is investing in the future of our community. Dave was the Lead Sponsor for the Reimagining Electric Vehicles Act (REV). The REV Act has created a pathway for Stellantis to reinvest in the Belvidere Assembly Plant. By shifting Belvidere to electric vehicle production, Stellantis would create thousands of jobs that would employ local residents for decades to come.
Dave also secured over $700,000 in infrastructure funding for Belvidere. This money was used to give water and sewer access to the new General Mills facility that just broke ground on Irene Rd. This infrastructure access guaranteed that General Mills would invest in our community and create hundreds of jobs for our residents. Neither of these important milestones would have happened without Dave Vella’s hard work and commitment to our community.
Dave’s record of supporting our community on these important issues is why I am proud to support his reelection for a second term. Our community needs an advocate in Springfield that will keep our issues at the forefront of state government, and that advocate is Dave Vella. Please join me and support Dave Vella for State Representative.
Sincerely, Clint Morris Mayor City of Belvidere

Whose Missions Support Veterans, Active Military & Their Families
The support Americans have for their armed forces is evident in how much they donate each year to charities with military-related missions. According to Charity Navigator, Americans donate more than $2.5 billion annually to charities with missions dedicated to the military. Individuals who want to donate to a charitable organization with a military-related mission may not know where to start, & that can be daunting given the number of organizations that fit that criteria. Charity Navigator indicates there are more than 40,000 American charities with military-related missions, which underscores how difficult it can be to find one to support.
Thankfully, Charity Navigator, which has provided donors with free access to data, tools & resources to guide their philanthropic decision-making since 2001, has curated a list of highly rated organizations that provide a variety of services to military members & their families. The following is a brief rundown of that list that can serve as a solid foundation for prospective donors. The full list can be found at charitynavigator.org.

Movember® Shines A Light On Various Men’s Health Issues
Started in Melbourne, Australia, by two friends nearly 20 years ago, Movember® has become a global, mustachioed phenomenon that has since helped to fund more than 1,250 men’s health projects. Each November, men across the globe agree to grow a mustache in an effort to raise awareness about men’s health issues. Dubbed Movember®, this effort is the brainchild of two friends, Travis Garone & Luke Slattery, who were joking about how to bring mustaches back into fashion. They were inspired to tie their efforts into a campaign to raise awareness about men’s health by the mother of a friend who, at the time, was raising funds for breast cancer. Since its inception, Movember® has helped raise awareness about three particular issues, prostate cancer, testicular cancer & men’s suicide, that might otherwise have garnered considerably less attention. Taking time to understand these issues can help make Movember® an even greater success than it already is.
Prostate cancer - The World Cancer Research Fund Int. reports that prostate cancer is the second most commonly occurring cancer in men & the fourth most common cancer overall. In fact, more than 1.4 million men across the globe are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Education about prostate cancer can include an emphasis on the factors & behaviors that increase a man’s risk for the disease, which the WCRFI indicates include height (being tall increases a man’s risk) & weight (being overweight & obese also increases risk).
Testicular cancer - The American Cancer Society reports that the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33, which underscores the notion that no man is too young to learn about men’s health issues. Though testicular cancer is not as prevalent as prostate cancer, the American Society of Clinical Oncology notes that diagnoses of the disease have been on the rise for decades. The reasons for that are unknown, but lack of awareness of the disease & what can be done to detect it early could be contributors.
Men’s suicide - The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention reports that suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the United States. The rate of suicide is highest among middle-aged white men, & in 2020 men died by suicide at a rate nearly four times higher than women. Globally suicide rates in men are just over twice as high as those for women. A greater awareness of suicide, including how much more prevalent it is among men than women, could help prevent more suicides. More information about suicide prevention is available at afsp.org.

Q&A Regarding Hospice & Palliative Care
Illnesses & aging forces families to make challenging decisions regarding the health & well-being of loved ones. Care facilities, home health aides & other services can improve quality of life for people who are no longer well enough - physically or cognitively - to care for themselves. Palliative & hospice care are part of these offerings.
What is palliative care? Palliative care is specialized medical services for individuals living with serious illnesses. It is not designed to cure or treat the condition itself, but it is a way to manage symptoms. It is typically used in conjunction with other forms of medicine that are attempting to treat or cure the disease.
What is hospice care? It is similar to palliative care in that it is geared to enhancing quality of life. Hospice care is for people in the last phases of incurable diseases & is intended to ensure they live as fully & comfortably as possible, according to the American Cancer Society. Unlike palliative care, which accompanies traditional medical care, those who accept hospice care typically cease any other care attempting to cure the illness.
Who can benefit from palliative or hospice care? The National Institute on Aging says anyone living with a serious illness, such as cancer, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, & heart failure, can appreciate the support palliative care provides. It is helpful at any stage of the illness, & is best started soon after diagnosis. Hospice care is for those who are in the final stages of their illnesses. Generally, hospice services are reserved for people who are expected to live another six months or less if their illness continues to run its course.
Are these services permanent? The good news about palliative care & hospice care is that wishes are completely driven by the patient & his or her family. If the patient is incapable of making medical directives, his or her medical proxy can make changes to care wishes. Research indicates that many times hospice care is started too late because people think it’s a form of “giving up.” However, anyone in hospice care can resume active care if they or their caregivers choose to do so.
What can palliative & hospice care resolve? The Mayo Clinic says that palliative & hospice care can improve symptoms such as pain, nausea or vomiting, anxiety, depression, constipation, difficulty breathing, fatigue, & trouble sleeping, among others. Hospice care also can include spiritual & bereavement care. Hospice teams typically follow up with members of the immediate family to offer them counseling or other services.
Who is in charge? Patients & their families decide what they want out of these care measures. Palliative care teams are separate from the patient’s medical care team that’s managing their treatment. Hospice care teams coordinate the majority of care for the patient & communicate with the patient’s medical care team.

Consider These Gratifying Thanksgiving Facts
is a time to gather with family & friends & reflect on one’s blessings. In 2022, Thanksgiving takes place on November 24. In anticipation, here are some interesting facts about the Thanksgiving celebration.
1. American Thanksgiving is largely modeled on a 17th century harvest feast shared by the English settlers & the Wampanoag tribe.
2. The National Turkey Federation says around 45 million turkeys will be eaten on Thanksgiving, which equates to about 720 million pounds of turkey being consumed (with the average turkey size being 16 pounds).
3. The Butterball hotline answers roughly 100,000 calls every year on its turkey question hotline.
4. In 1953, the Swanson Co. overestimated the number of frozen turkeys it would sell for the holiday season by 26 tons. Rather than waste the meat, Swanson sliced it up, repackaged it & created the first frozen TV dinners.
5. Thanksgiving in America may be older than many recognize. While Thanksgiving is largely tied to the 17th century settlers, the National Parks Service says in 1565 Spanish settlers in St. Augustine (now Florida) celebrated by having a meal to which they invited the native Seloy tribe. The Spanish served pork stew, sea biscuits, red wine, & garbanzo beans. Some say the Seloy contributed turkey, venison & maize.
6. Thanksgiving didn’t become a civic holiday until Abraham Lincoln made it one after the Civil War tragedy. Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday on October 20, 1864.
7. The Pilgrims did not refer to themselves as “pilgrims.” They used the word “separatists” as they were separating themselves from a larger belief system.
8. Each year, the American president “pardons” a turkey from slaughter on Thanksgiving. This tradition dates back to when Abraham Lincoln’s son was upset that his family’s turkey was going to be killed for dinner.
9. According to the U.S. Calorie Control Council (CCC), an average American may consume 4,500 calories & 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving Day.
10. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual tradition. People line the parade route in New York City or tune in to watch the parade on television. It originated in 1924 & the famed balloons were added in 1927.
11. Apple pie is the pie of choice for Thanksgiving, even though pumpkin pie is prevalent this time of year. Thanksgiving is a popular holiday in the U.S. Many traditions have been borne of the holiday, & it is a favorite time of year for many people.

Pet diets are more elaborate than ever. Where once a few brands dominated the pet food market, now a trip to the pet store yields dozens of options. Pet parents may consider food options carefully when making initial decisions concerning what to feed their pets, even consulting their veterinarians about their options. But even after careful consideration, pet owners may ultimately need to change their furry friends’ diets. Here are some instances when a dietary overhaul may be necessary.
• Lethargy & weakness: A pet who is suddenly acting lethargic & weak may need a change of diet. Certain foods high in antioxidants can help boost immune system response & help pets fight illnesses or recover from surgeries, while others may cause nutritional deficiencies. Consult with a vet before making any changes.
• Life stage: Certain formulations of food are designed for stages of development. For example, puppy foods have a specific profile for feeding fast-growing pups, & also may be recommended for pregnant or nursing mothers. Adult & senior formulas have recipes for those stages of life (i.e., fewer calories or certain nutrients for joint health). When a pet crosses a life stage, a new food may be recommended.
• Illness diagnosis: Vets often recommend certain diets based on the presence of disease or illness. A cat that is diabetic may need a food that helps manage that disease. A dog with kidney disease or the presence of crystals in its urine may require a food that helps treat urinary issues.
• Weight control: Concern over a pet’s weight gain or weight loss could warrant a change to its diet. There are special foods designed to help animals maintain healthy weights.
• Allergies: Pets may experience allergic reactions to environmental triggers or ingredients in food. If a vet has ruled out other causes for itchy skin, loss of fur/feathers or other allergic symptoms, a new food may help.
• Loss of interest: Sometimes pets no longer enjoy eating the food they have been consuming for a while. Subtle changes in the formulation may be off-putting or boredom with a diet could set in. While owners shouldn’t change pets’ diets every time an animal turns up its nose at feeding time, a different flavor or food could add some welcome variety.
