3 Unique Ways To Give Back To Service Members Service members & their families make many sacrifices to protect the lives & freedoms of their fellow citizens.

The following are three unique ways to give back to these selfless men & women: 1. Serve as a driver for veterans. Unfortunately, many service members return from overseas missions with disabilities, some of which prevent them from driving. Adults who want to help service members can serve as drivers for veterans who can’t drive themselves. Such a gesture ensures they won’t miss any appointments with doctors or physical therapists, helping them get on the road to recovery that much quicker.

2. Donate your airline miles. Some disabled veterans receive medical treatments far away from home at facilities that specialize in treating certain types of injuries, which can make it difficult for their families to be there for them during their recoveries. By donating airline miles to military families, you can ensure injured servicemen & -women can still see their families during difficult times in their lives.

3. Sponsor a service dog. A significant percentage of veterans return home with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. PTSD has been linked to a host of conditions, including depression & anxiety. However, programs such as Companions for Heroes, an organization that places service dogs with veterans, has helped many veterans successfully cope with PTSD. By sponsoring a service dog through an organization such as Companions for Heroes, you can provide an invaluable service to men & women fighting to regain their quality of life.

Choosing Palliative Care Options

Modern medicine works marvels, though some conditions remain a mystery. When afflicted with a condition that has no cure, individuals suffering illnesses or other ailments may need to look for ways to feel better. This is the basis behind palliative care. The Mayo Clinic says palliative care is specialized medical care that focuses on providing relief from pain & other symptoms of serious illnesses. Palliative care is not exclusively end-of-life care, but it can be. In fact, hospice care is a form of palliative care for terminally ill people. The American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation offers that palliative care may include emotional, spiritual & physical support. In addition to pain management, palliative care may help relieve symptoms such as shortness of breath, anxiety, fatigue, nausea, & depression.

According to The World Health Organization, palliative care improves the quality of life of patients, their caregivers & their extended families. However, only 14% of the estimated 40 million people across the globe who need palliative care currently receive it. Those with access to care can use these guidelines when selecting palliative care services.

• Start with your primary care physician to acquire the best care possible. He or she can put you on a path to building a palliative care team.

• Have a list of questions at the ready. These can include asking about the criteria for palliative services. What treatments will you have to discontinue & what can be continued? What to do if diagnosis/prognosis changes?

Which professionals will be on the palliative care team?

• Decide where care will take place. Some palliative services, such as end-of-life hospice care, may take place in a hospice center or in a special wing of a hospital. Other palliative services occur at home. Specify where you want to be cared for so that you can choose the right program.

• Determine if you can get assistance with advance directives. Some palliative care teams will work with volunteers in the legal & accounting fields to provide peace of mind. Chronic, life-threatening or serious illnesses may require individuals to document their plans while they’re still of sound mind. They also can spell out desires & goals for treatment, & establishing a health care proxy when the future may make decisions challenging.

• Interview & get to know potential palliative care providers. Assess more than an individual’s credentials. Choose people who are compassionate & exhibit genuine concern for your well-being.

Palliative care is an important component of feeling well for as long as possible. It takes research & knowing what you want from care to find the best options.

2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper & spray with nonstick cooking spray.

Charitable giving is the lifeblood of many nonprofit organizations. The generosity of donors helps charities meet their missions & provide vital services to people facing disease, financial hardship & other situations they cannot overcome on their own. Many donors make sacrifices to support their favorite causes & charities. Forgoing certain luxuries so money can be donated to charity illustrates the selfless nature of charitable giving, which can even continue after death. Estate planning is a complicated process that details exactly how a person wants their assets divvied up after death. But an estate plan also can go into effect while individuals are still alive.

Each year, millions of people across the globe choose to include charitable giving in their estate plans, & that can benefit charities & donors. The following are a handful of ways to incorporate giving into your estate plans: • Bequest giving in a will or living trust. Perhaps the most widely known way to include charitable giving in an estate plan is to bequeath money in a will or living will. The Community Foundation Alliance notes that bequests typically allow donors to define how their donations will be spent or utilized. That benefits charitable organizations, but surviving family members also can benefit from such arrangements. According to LawDepot.com, individuals may be able to lower the estate taxes on their estates at their time of death if they bequeath money to an eligible charitable organization in their wills.

• Consider a charitable rollover. The Internal Revenue Service notes that individuals with an IRA, SEP IRA, Simple IRA, or retirement plan account generally must begin withdrawing money from these accounts when they reach age 72. These withdrawals are called required minimum distributions & they are considered taxable income. However, individuals who want to give to charity can opt for a Qualified Charitable Distribution, or QCD. A QCD counts toward the minimum distribution from retirement accounts & individuals will not be taxed on the money they donate to charity. That’s a win-win for charities & individuals 72 and over who do not need to withdraw money from their IRAs to meet daily living expenses.

• Donate via a charitable remainder trust. A charitable remainder trust, or CRT, allows individuals to set up a trust that benefits both a designated beneficiary & a charity or charities of their choosing. When a CRT is set up, a beneficiary will receive annual payments from the trust until it terminates, at which time the remaining funds in the trust are donated to charity. The philanthropy experts at Fidelity Charitable note that individuals can name themselves as the beneficiaries of the trust, which ensures they will have an income during retirement & that their favorite charities will be supported when the trust expires.

Individuals who want to make charitable giving part of their estate plan can do so in various ways.

How Active Seniors Can Protect Their Vision

Retirement may be seen as a time to slow down & enjoy some well-earned rest & relaxation, but today’s seniors clearly did not get the memo. Modern seniors look & act a lot different than traditional depictions of retirees. The shift in attitudes regarding aging is noticeable in the growth of active retirement communities, which are designed for aging men & women who want to engage in activities where no chairs are required. Active seniors may not fit outdated stereotypes of cardigan-clad grandparents shuffling about dusty retirement homes, but even the most energetic retirees may still be vulnerable to age-related health complications. For example, the American Optometric Assoc. notes that men & women over the age of 60 may be vulnerable to age-related vision problems.

A certain degree of vision loss is natural as men & women age, but that doesn’t mean active seniors have to sit idly by. In fact, there are many ways for active seniors to protect their vision so they can continue to get up & go without having to worry about losing their eyesight.

• Make your diet work for you. The AOA notes that a number of eye diseases can develop after an individual turns 60, & some of these conditions can be minimized with wise lifestyle choices. For example, a healthy, nutrient-rich diet can protect vision over the long haul. The National Council On Aging notes that studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids, which can be found in foods like spinach, kale & salmon, can reduce individuals’ risk for age-related eye diseases. Seniors can speak with their physicians about other ways to utilize diet to combat age-related vision problems.

• Protect your eyes & look cool at the same time. Active seniors spend lots of time outdoors, & that may have an adverse effect on their vision. The NCOA notes that lengthy exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause both short- & long-term eye damage. Thankfully, such issues are easily avoided if seniors wear sunglasses with UV protection when going outside. Brimmed hats also can protect the eyes from harmful UV rays.

• Be mindful of screen time. Much has been made of how much screen time is healthy for young people. But seniors also are not immune to the potentially harmful effects of spending too much time staring at their phones & other devices. The NCOA recommends seniors employ the 20-20-20 rule in regard to screen usage. Every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This quick exercise can reduce eye strain.

An active lifestyle benefits seniors in a myriad of ways. Seniors should take steps to protect their vision so they can continue to get up & go long after they retire.

Social Call Program Helps Prevent Loneliness Letter From: Kelly Hillan, Exec. Director of The Keen Age Center

Dear Friends, In this season of thanksgiving, we are reminded of how grateful we are for the people in our lives. As we look back at the ups & downs of last year, we see genuine happiness when people are together, true delight from deep inside. We also, at times, see the pain of loneliness in our seniors’ eyes.

Loneliness can appear without notice. Just ask Margaret who only a year ago was enjoying a very social life. Typically, days meant riding with her husband to brunch or dinner, and canvassing estate sales in between. Anyone who met Margaret became her friend. Unfortunately, when her husband died last winter, Margaret’s daily routine changed dramatically. Not comfortable driving by herself, she was home alone most days & human connections became few & far between. Her physician suggested Margaret participate in our Social Call Program, & she has since been hitting it off with a volunteer caller, Judy, who chats with her twice a week. Now they are sharing rides, attending the Keen Age Center, & enjoying games of bridge with others.

Only with your help can we reach more people like Margaret. Your donation is an important part of our funding so we can do more for area seniors. Beyond the Social Call Program, we provide numerous activities at the Keen Age Center, free or low-cost rides on Public Transportation, loving In-Home Care, skillful Information & Assistance, & generous sharing of mobility equipment in our Lending Closet.
