FAQ About Veterans Day Each November, millions of people recognize the service & sacrifice of military veterans on Veterans Day. Initially commemorated as Armistice Day but renamed Veterans Day in the United States in 1954, the holiday is a federal holiday throughout the country. The first Armistice Day was observed in 1919. Despite that lengthy history, the general public may still have questions about Veterans Day. When is Veterans Day observed? The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that Veterans Day is always observed officially on November 11, regardless of which day of the week that happens to be. In 2023, Veterans Day is Saturday, November 11. Because Veterans Day falls on a Saturday in 2023, the federal observation date is Friday, November 10. Why is November 11 so significant? November 11 is a significant day in world history because it marks the signing of the armistice between the Allies of World War I & Germany at 5:45 a.m. on November 11, 1918. Though the formal peace treaty, the Treaty of Versailles, was not signed until 1919 & hostilities between the sides continued for hours after the armistice was signed, the day is still viewed as the end of World War I. What distinguishes Veterans Day from Memorial Day? The VA notes that Veterans Day honors all those individuals who served honorably in the military during both wartime & peacetime. Memorial Day is a day to honor & remember military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who lost their lives in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. What is the significance of red poppies? Red poppies are ubiquitous on Memorial Day, but they’re also visible on Veterans Day. Though it’s not taboo to wear red poppies on Veterans Day, it’s a tradition that aligns more with Memorial Day. That’s because the poppies are typically worn to honor fallen military personnel. A 1915 poem written by a Canadian Lieutenant Colonel named John McCrae referred to the fields of poppies growing around the graves of World War I soldiers in Flanders. Do other countries honor their military veterans? Many countries across the globe honor their military veterans, & many do so on November 11 as well. For example, Canadians & Australians observe Remembrance Day in honor of their nation’s respective veterans on November 11. Great Britain observes Remembrance Day on the Sunday nearest to November 11. Veterans Day is a day to honor & commemorate the brave men & women who have honorably served in the U.S. military during wartime & peacetime. The Boone County VFW Post 1461 will host a Veterans Day Ceremony in THURSDAY, APRIL 20TH their main hall at 10 AM on Veterans Day. Please plan to join them as they salute those who have served & are serving our country. The VFW Post 1461 is located at 1310 W. Lincoln, Belvidere. For more information call 815-544-2014.

How Caregivers Can Alleviate Stress

What Is Prediabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that affects millions of people across the globe. When a person has type 2 diabetes, their body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or it resists insulin. Without treatment, type 2 diabetes can lead to serious health implications. Before an individual develops type 2 diabetes, a precursor known as prediabetes may be diagnosed. Johns Hopkins Medicine says having prediabetes means blood glucose levels are higher than normal, even if they have not yet reached the point that indicates diabetes. Prediabetes is nothing to take lightly, as even this condition can increase risk of injury or illness to the heart, kidneys & nerves. Prediabetes typically does not show any signs or symptoms. One possible sign, darkened skin on certain parts of the body like the neck, armpits & groin, may be overlooked, states the Mayo Clinic. Still, of those with prediabetes, 80% do not know they have it, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Routine physical examinations & bloodwork are a key tool in diagnosing prediabetes & getting people the care they need. The CDC indicates a fasting blood sugar level of 100-125 mg/dL (99 or lower is normal) is considered prediabetes. A level of 126 mg/DL or higher indicates diabetes. The good news is that prediabetes does not need to turn into full-blown diabetes if people embrace various strategies. • Aspire to live a healthier lifestyle: Exercising more, losing weight & changing the foods one eats can stop & even reverse the progression of prediabetes, says Johns Hopkins Medicine. A doctor may suggest a diabetes prevention program. • Medication: Medications to lower blood sugar may be prescribed. • Manage stress: High stress levels may exacerbate hormonal responses & lead to prediabetes. Finding ways to reduce stress can help. • Quit smoking: There are scores of reasons to quit smoking, & avoiding a diabetes diagnosis is one of them. Prediabetes is a serious concern that may escalate & turn into type 2 diabetes if left unchecked. Individuals who are overweight, have large waist sizes, are sedentary, are over the age of 35, & have a family history of type 2 diabetes should talk to their doctors about their own risk for the disease.

Serving as a caregiver for a friend or loved one can be both rewarding & taxing at the same time. The senior housing authority A Place for Mom indicates that 41 million Americans offer unpaid caregiving services, & that number is expected to increase as the aging population grows in the coming decades. Formal caregivers are paid care providers in a home or care setting. However, an informal caregiver is an unpaid individual that assists others with activities of daily living as well as medical tasks. Whether one is a formal or informal caregiver, researchers have long known that caregiving can adversely affect a caregiver’s mental & physical health. The AARP Public Policy Institute says 17% of caregivers feel their health in general has gotten worse due to caregiving responsibilities. The fatigue that arises from caring for another individual is often referred to as caregiver burnout. Since caregiving takes place over several years, the impact can escalate over time. Caregiver stress is directly related to burnout. One of the first steps to take is recognizing the signs of caregiver burnout so that action can be taken to improve the situation. The Mayo Clinic says signs of caregiver stress include: Worrying all the time • feeling tired often • changes in sleep • gaining or losing weight • becoming easily irked or angry • losing interest in activities once enjoyed • feeling sad or depressed • experiencing frequent headaches, pains or other health problems • misusing drugs or alcohol, including prescriptions • missing your own medical appointments or other appointments. Caregivers need to put themselves first at times in order to help avoid health complications that can come from the stress & demand of caregiving. Make use of these caregiver stress management tips, courtesy of the Mayo Clinic & Penn Medicine. • Ask for help. Figure ways that others can help & be sure to let them know & accept anything that is provided. • Do the best you can. Every caregiver feels they are not doing enough at some point in time. Do whatever you can manage & know that it is adequate. • Set small goals. Categorize responsibilities into smaller, more manageable tasks. Make lists of what is most important & tackle those goals, moving on as needed. • Reach out to a support group. There are support groups for many different types of needs, including caregiver support. People who are experiencing the same highs & lows as you can offer advice or just be there to listen. • Find ways to rest & sleep. Many caregivers are sleep deprived. If sleeping has become an issue, discuss potential remedies with your own doctor. • Look into respite care help. Taking a break from caregiving can do wonders. Certain adult care centers & skilled nursing homes offer temporary respite care services for informal caregivers. A loved one can be dropped off for a night or two, giving you a rest. This also is an option if you want to go on vacation. Caregivers may feel burdened by stress. There are options available to manage it.

Even though pizza, wings & beer is a combination that has appeared on game day food tables seemingly since the dawn of organized sports, the nuances of beer open up the possibility for many other food-beverage combinations. Just as wine can complement a variety of different foods when the right combination of flavors is presented, so, too, can one’s favorite brew. Craft brewers have opened the public’s eyes to a much wider array of beer styles than may be available at the local liquor store or supermarket. Below you can find some suggestions for beer & food pairings, courtesy of the Brewers Association. • Blonde Ale: Match this ale with lighter food choices, such as chicken, salads, & light, nutty cheeses. • India Pale Ale: The hoppy forward flavor of IPAs makes these popular beers a good pairing with strong, spicy foods, or bold, sweet desserts. • Amber/Red Ale: Pair a wide range of foods with amber ales, like chicken, seafood, burgers, & spicy cuisine. • Porter: The strong flavor works well with roasted or smoked food, barbecue, sausages, or blackened fish. • Dark Lager, Dunkel, Schwarzbier: Hearty, spicy foods, barbecue, & roasted meats also complement these dark beers, as do pizzas & burgers. • Hefeweizen: Fans of this light German or Austrian beer will learn it pairs well with salads, seafood, sushi, & traditionally weisswurst, a white Bavarian sausage. • Imperial Stout: This beer can easily overwhelm many foods, but can stand up to foie gras or smoked goose. Long-aged cheeses, like gouda, parmesan or cheddar, also can work with stout, as do rich, chocolate desserts. • American Wheat Ale: Choose this beer to go with very light foods like salads & sushi. It’s generally too light for dessert, but might work with fresh fruit. Furthermore, when pairing beer with food, keep in mind that beer with hop bitterness, roasted malt, high carbonation, & higher ABVs balance sweet, rich (fatty) & umami flavors in food. Hop bitterness also can emphasize the spice of foods, such as in chili or certain ethnic cuisines. A sweet or malty beer balances out spiciness or acidity in foods.

A Friendly Call Can Make All The Difference Loneliness is the pain we feel when our social connections do not meet our needs. Social isolation is the state of having a smaller number of social contacts, which may contribute to loneliness. According to the World Health Organization, “social isolation & loneliness are important, yet neglected, social determinants of the health of older people.” Social isolation & loneliness among older people are harmful: They shorten older people’s lives, they damage their physical & mental health & they reduce their quality of life. Social isolation & loneliness among older people are widespread: In some countries, up to 1 in 3 older people are lonely. This is a growing health, social, and economic concern. $

Tips For Avoiding Fires During Holidays Submitted By: Kelly Hillan, Exec. Director of The Keen Age Center

Our attention is turning to Thanksgiving gatherings & decking the halls for the holiday get-togethers. It is important to be aware that the upcoming holidays can present significant dangers for fires. Did you know that home fires are the nation’s most frequent disaster? Nearly half of home fires occur during the months of December, January & February. It’s essential to make sure your smoke alarms are in working order & that you know how to safely escape from your home should a fire occur. Friends of Keen Age Center have partnered with Belvidere Fire Department this November for a discussion on tips for staying safe during the upcoming holiday season. The Fire Department will discuss: • Making sure your home is safe for you & your family & guests • How to respond to a cooking fire • Checking holiday lights & cords • Concerns related to live & artificial trees • Safely using candles

Our goal is to maximize quality of life, so you can enjoy time with those who mean the most to you.

Firefighters risk their lives to keep us safe & we can help make their jobs easier by doing our part to minimize our risk of fires. Taking time to review tips about fire safety issues can help you create a safer & more secure living environment. For these tips & more, join us and members of the Belvidere Fire Department on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 1 PM. Registration is required by calling Robbie at (779) 552-7238.

What is hospice care? Hospice care is for people with serious illnesses who choose to cease or continue treatment. That’s an important distinction, as a misconception regarding hospice care is that it’s reserved for people who have stopped receiving treatment for their illness. Where do people receive hospice care? Another misconception regarding hospice care is that it’s provided exclusively at facilities that specialize in hospice services. Though nursing homes, assisted living facilities & even hospitals may provide hospice care, it’s also possible for individuals to receive such care at home. Receiving hospice care at home is a significant benefit for many aging individuals. Though facilities that specialize in providing hospice care often go to great lengths to establish peaceful, comfortable settings, many families like having the option that allows an aging relative to receive hospice care at home, where they might be able to enjoy more frequent visits from loved ones. Which services are included in hospice care? An assortment of services fall under the umbrella of hospice care. Pain relief, physical or occupational therapy, emotional & spiritual support, & advance care planning are some of the services offered as hospice care. Families are encouraged to discuss services their loved one may need with their loved one’s physician. That information can be used to find the right hospice care arrangement. Are medications stopped upon entering hospice? Medication to cure or control a serious illness will stop when a person enters hospice care. For example, a cancer patient will no longer receive chemotherapy after entering hospice care. However, medications to treat conditions or symptoms unrelated to a person’s illness can continue to be administered.

Care & comfort are vital components of tending to a loved one with a serious illness especially when individuals who are ill are approaching the end of their lives. When an aging family member is nearing the end of their life, many families rely on hospice care to provide a level of care & comfort that ensures the person’s final days are less challenging than they might otherwise be. Families who have never before had to rely on hospice care may have some common questions, which the National Institute on Aging has answered below:

• Brakes & Suspension • New Tires • Wheel Alignment • Roadside Tire Service • Shocks & Struts • Small Engine Sales & • Air Conditioning Service

Is hospice care 24/7? Hospice care is rarely a round-the-clock service. Though a hospice care team member may be available at all hours, most of the day-to-day care is provided by family & friends. However, families considering an outside facility are encouraged to ask questions regarding round-the-clock care. Hospice care can help aging individuals live comfortably as they approach the end of their lives. More information about hospice care can be found at nia.nih.gov.
