Home Improvement Projects For Your Fall To-Do List Homeowners know that maintaining a home can be a year-round job. No home is immune to wear & tear, & homeowners who want to protect their real estate investments should try to stay two steps ahead to ensure their homes do not succumb to the elements or become outdated & unappealing to prospective buyers. Fall has become a season that’s synonymous with home improvement, but homeowners need not wait until the leaves begin changing colors to start planning their next projects. The following are a few items homeowners can add to their fall home improvement to-do lists.

Roof inspection - Less precipitation tends to fall during the warmer months than during the late fall & winter. As a result, homeowners may not be aware of leaky roofs until autumn has come & gone. But waiting until winter to inspect the roof can prove disastrous, as weather conditions will not be conducive to inspection & increased precipitation may result in potentially costly damage. Leaky roofs can be easily identified by looking for water stains on interior ceilings. Once you see a stain, you can climb onto the roof to identify the location of the leak & fix it before winter rains & snowfall turn the problem into something much larger.

Gutter cleaning - While some homeowners prefer to delay their gutter cleaning projects until late fall, those whose homes are surrounded by trees may need to schedule two such projects. Gutters clogged with leaves & other debris can cause serious roof damage, & that damage can extend all the way inside a home. In addition, clogged gutters make great nesting areas for insects or critters. Always stand on a ladder when cleaning gutters, wearing gloves to remove items by hand & dropping leaves & debris into a trash can below. Standing on the roof & leaning over gutters greatly increases your risk of injury. Once you have finished clearing the gutters, you can use a hose to run water through them & the downspouts to confirm everything is functioning properly.

Window & doorway inspection - Before temperatures start dropping once again, homeowners will want to inspect their windows & doorways for leaks. Over time, cracks can develop around windows & doorways, & while such cracks are rarely noticeable when the weather outside is warm, they can be quite obvious & very costly if they remain unsealed come the start of winter. Cold air can enter a home through cracks around windows & doorways, & many homeowners who don’t suspect leaks may respond by turning up the thermostats in their homes. That can prove quite expensive over a full winter. Choose a windy day to place a hand by windows and external doorways in your home to see if you can feel drafts. If you can, seal these cracks as soon as possible.

Patio cleanup - Patios are popular hangouts during spring & summer, & that can result in a lot of wear & tear.

Once you store patio furniture for the winter, inspect your entire patio to determine if it needs any refurbishing.

While certain patio projects may be best left for spring, you can still clean any stained areas around the grill & look for cracks in the sidewalk that need to be addressed.

Preparing for fall home improvement projects ahead of time can help homeowners complete projects in a timely manner & ensures they won’t be forced to brave the winter elements when refurbishing their homes.

Labor Day Celebrations Have Evolved More than 100 years after Labor Day was first celebrated, debate remains as to who is responsible for the holiday. Regardless of the holiday’s origins, the way it is celebrated today is vastly different from how it was at its inception. The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882, in New York City, & the holiday may have been inspired by a Canadian labor dispute that took place in Toronto in 1872. That dispute fueled a workers’ strike. Records that show Peter J. McGuire, the then general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners & a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was the first person to suggest a day to honor workers. However, there are other people who feel Matthew Maguire, a machinist, & later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Assoc. of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882. Soon after the Central Labor Union in New York adopted a Labor Day proposal & began plans for a demonstration & picnic.

In 1884, the first Monday in September was designated as Labor Day. The Central Labor Union encouraged similar organizations in other cities to follow New York’s example & hold their own holidays for workers on the same date. By 1885, Labor Day was celebrated in cities across the country. However, it was not yet considered an official federal holiday, & many people fought to secure legislation. Such legislation began on the state level, where New York became the first state to introduce a bill recognizing Labor Day. But in February of 1887, Oregon became the first state to pass a law recognizing Labor Day. Following Oregon’s lead, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, & New Jersey officially recognized Labor Day. Many other states soon followed suit, and Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.

The first Labor Day festivities included speeches & picnics, & many of the first workers honored were carpenters, machine & factory workers & other industry workers. Today, the holiday celebrates many blue collar workers, including firefighters, police officers, bakers, teachers, & pharmacists. However, Labor Day has transformed into an end-of-summer hurrah more so than a holiday to pay homage to workers. Rather than parades, many people flock to the lakes to soak up a few more of the sun’s rays before saying goodbye to the summer.

Though apples are enjoyed across the globe, many people associate apples with the United States. That’s in spite of the fact that the first apples were cultivated on the opposite side of the world in Asia. There are more than 7,500 known cultivars of apples that produce various characteristics for flavor & appearance. Apples are often a topic of discussion in the fall, when many trees produce their largest bounties of fruit. Autumn is a good time of year to take a closer look at apples, & explore some of the most popular varieties for picking & eating.

Apple origins - Malus deomestica, or the common apple tree, is a descendent of apple trees that originated in Central Asia. Apples have been grown for thousands of years in Asia & Europe. The original apple tree was the wild apple, or Malus sieversii. DNA analysis has confirmed that the wild apple is the progenitor of the cultivated apple enjoyed today. European colonists likely brought apple seeds & trees with them when they emigrated to North America, introducing that part of the world to the apple tree. Records from the Massachusetts Bay Company indicate that apples were being grown in New England as early as 1630. Americans also enjoy the popular story of Johnny Appleseed, who was believed to have distributed apple seeds & trees to settlers across the United States. While apples can be produced from seeds, nowadays many apples are propagated by grafting so that they retain the parent tree’s characteristics of flavor, hardiness & insect resistance.

Apples & symbolism - Apples have become the main symbols of many different stories & tales throughout history. Apples are linked to the Biblical tale of Adam & Eve & their ultimate expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

However, the apple is never named in any of the religious texts as the fruit Eve picked from the tree of knowledge. Apples have appeared in fairy tales & folklore. The Brothers Grimm had the character “Snow White” fall ill after eating a poisoned apple. In Norse mythology, the goddess Iounn was the appointed keeper of golden apples that kept the Aesir young forever. Apples have also played a role in science, most notably Sir Isaac Newton’s study of gravity. While myth surrounds the story of Newton & an apple falling from a nearby tree, it’s likely that witnessing an apple fall from a tree did spark something in the famed scientist.

Most popular apple varieties - Many varieties of apple stand out as perennial favorites. In the United States, the Red Delicious is the country’s most popular grown apple. It was called the hawkeye when discovered in 1872. The Golden Delicious is the second most popular grown apple in America. The Delicious apples tend to have mild, but grainy flesh that can fall apart when cooked, so they’re best used for snacking. Cortland, Empire, Fuji, Gala, McIntosh, & Macoun are some of the other most popular varieties. Those interested in baking with apples can select among Granny Smith, Jonagold & McIntosh. These apples tend to be crisp & tart & hold up better in recipes.

Maintaining your journey toward Optimal Well-being is only sustainable when you take on small, manageable challenges.

An old saying that slow and steady wins the race, and another old saying says that even the longest journeys begin with a single step.

There is a lot of truth there.

When we break big Habits of Health down into micro Habits of Health, suddenly they don’t seem so daunting, and we don’t have to dip into that limited pool of willpower.

Here are some examples of how you can continue your transformation without having to fall back on willpower: • 10,000 steps a day is a lot to someone who has been living a mostly sedentary lifestyle. Instead of thinking about suddenly getting 10,000 steps, can you park your car 5 spaces farther away at work? Of course you can.

Making that choice does not require some Herculean effort physically or mentally, and it still moves you forward.

• Make healthy foods the convenient choice. The simple act of stocking your house with accessible healthy foods goes a long way. Fast food rose to power because of the power of convenience, but now thanks to meal replacements & even pre-packaged salad having a healthy meal does not have to mean slaving over the stove after a long workday.

• Cutting back on caffeine can be a battle against a powerful addiction. Going cold turkey sounds good but is probably the hardest path to take. Can you drink one less cup of coffee a day? If not, how about half a cup less?

Your caffeine habit wasn’t built in a day, so it’s okay if we dismantle it over a longer period as well as long as you are making a little bit of progress each day.

Willpower is still a useful tool in the Habits of Health arsenal. You might need it to overcome a particularly strong craving or have to force yourself to take a few deep breaths in a stressful moment. But even then, the Habits of Health System gives you tools to amplify and support your willpower so that it is not your sole refuge. The more we can avoid relying on willpower, the more useful it will be when the time comes. In the meantime, start thinking about micro Habits of Health and how you can use them to make your transformation lasting and sustainable.

1) Preheat grill to medium heat. Place vegetables in a grill basket.

2) Grill 10 minutes or until al dente (tender-crisp), turning occasionally.
