Seniors are particularly intrigued with children because most of theirs are grown and have children of their own.

Children bring about memories and happy feelings in seniors across the board.

It is important for seniors to stay close to and involved with their grandchildren for their own benefits as well as the child’s. A study by Boston College researchers found that emotionally close ties between grandparents and adult grandchildren reduced depressive symptoms in both groups. Since life expectancies are higher than they once were, grandparents are more apt to being able to be involved. For grandparents, being close with grandchildren can expose them to different ideas and keep them connected with a generation they otherwise may not have had access to. These relationships can also keep them mentally sharp. As for grandchildren, having a grandparent, or event a great-grandparent, is extremely significant. Children can learn so much from grandparents due to wisdom they have acquired throughout their years. They can learn cultural heritage and family history. Grandparents can instill morals and values in children that they can use as they grow older and shape themselves into adults.

Overall, children and grandparents bonding together is an amazing opportunity that should not be missed.

Making memories, sharing laughter, and learning from one another is a blessing that should be passed from generation to generation. So stay in touch, make phone calls, take pictures, mail letters and don’t let the opportunity pass you by.

Hunting is a popular hobby and sport enjoyed by millions of people across North America. Hunting seasons vary depending on where you live. Regulations designed by local conservation, game, fish, & wildlife departments often dictate the start & end of hunting season. Although the licensing, seasons, limits, & fees for hunting may differ geographically, the preparation that goes into getting ready for hunting season is similar regardless of geography.

Many seasoned hunters realize hunting season does not begin on “opening day.” Rather, it can take weeks or months to get ready for a successful season. Considering hunting seasons can be brief, preparation helps hunters make the most of their time spent in the field. *Purchase your license, tag or stamp. Many wildlife departments require hunters register in advance of the season, & this registration includes securing a hunting license. Because there is a limit to how many animals each hunter can hunt, tags for the animals they’re hunting also will be issued. Hunters planning on going out for the season should stay apprised of when licensing & registration begins & ends so they can hunt legally. *Scout areas. The landscape can change from year to year depending on a host of factors, including construction, commercialization & weather. Areas once open to hunting may now be restricted lands. *Check & replenish gear. Inspect weaponry, field-dressing supplies, clothing, & other supplies for wear & tear.

Address any issues that need to be fixed, or replace items as necessary. If a rifle, bow or shotgun hasn’t been fired in a while, take it to a range to verify accuracy & sighting. If you hunt out of a tree stand or blind, make sure it is sturdy & in good condition prior to use. *Get in shape. Hunting often requires hiking in & out of the great outdoors in various terrain. It’s helpful to increase physical activity leading up to the hunt to prepare your body for the physical demands of hunting. *Organize & pack gear. Ensure your equipment is clean, in working order & packed away in your travel bags.

Establish a system of organization & a checklist so you’re certain you will have what you need. Don’t forget to bring along your hunting license & animal tags; otherwise, you may be levied with costly fines. *Always hunt safely. It is quite easy to get swept up in the moment when tracking game. Don’t let overzealousness cloud rational judgment & safety precautions. Otherwise an injury or even death can occur.

Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. 2. Sauté onions & garlic in oil. Add tomatoes, olives, basil. Simmer until thickened, about 10 minutes.

3. Place in non-stick baking dish. Top with cod fillets. Bake covered about 10 minutes until fish flakes easily.

Fall Prevention Awareness Day Fall Prevention Awareness Day is observed on September 22, 2017. So let’s talk about falls & what we can do to prevent them as much as possible. Every 11 seconds an older adult is seen in the Emergency Dept. for a fall related injury. Approx. 9,500 deaths of older adults are fall related each year. Falls are the leading cause of death from injury among people 65 & older, and the risk of falls increases proportionately with age. That is really something to be concerned about, folks! So what can you do to prevent falls? The National Council on Aging suggests these 6 steps to control your health & prevent avoidable falls.

1. Find a good balance & exercise program. Look to build balance, strength, & flexibility. Contact your local Area Council on Aging for referrals. Find a program you like and take a friend.

2. Talk to your health care provider. Ask for an assessment for your risk of falling. Share any history of recent falls.

3. Regularly review your medications with your doctor or pharmacist. Make sure side effects aren’t increasing your risk of falling. Take medications only as prescribed.

4. Get your vision & hearing checked regularly & update your eyeglasses. Your eyes & ears are key to keeping you on your feet.

5. Keep your home safe. Remove tripping hazards, increase lighting, make stairs safe, & install grab bars.

6. Talk to your family members. Enlist their support in making simple steps to stay safe.

It is almost time to bid adieu to the warm days of summer. Chilly afternoons followed by continually dropping temperatures are on the horizon, and fall is the perfect time to service the home furnace.

Furnace maintenance should be done on a regular basis. The best time to do so is in late summer or early fall, when you still have enough time to address any problems before it gets too cold outside. HVAC systems malfunctions are typically caused by one of a handful of common problems. Inspecting certain components can help to guarantee a furnace is in working order when the first cold days arrive.

Filter & air intakes - After several months of running the air conditioning, the filter on the heating & cooling system may need to be changed. Check the condition of the filter to see if it is heavily soiled. Furnace filters are relatively inexpensive. Since this thin barrier will be responsible for cleaning the air you breathe, it is important to keep a fresh filter in the unit. A clogged, dirty filter will reduce the efficiency of the HVAC system.

Check the air intakes around the house for obstructions. Do not place furniture directly in front of intakes or venting that delivers air to the home, as this can compromise air flow & force the unit to work harder.

Many systems also have some sort of external vent or exhaust pipe. Check that the area is free of leaves, debris and animal nests. Again, any blockages can impede the efficiency of the unit or cause it to fail.

Thermostat - Very often a furnace may not turn over because the thermostat is faulty. Many a homeowner has spent money to have a service person come out to examine the furnace, only to learn they only need a new thermostat or battery in the thermostat. Check the thermostat against a separate thermometer to ensure that it is reading the right temperature in the house. Raise the setting a few degrees to test if the heat kicks on.

Fuel - Furnaces are powered by various energy sources. Electricity, gas or oil may be involved in the process. If fuel is not being delivered to the furnace, the pilot will not light and warm the air to be blown through the house.

Some systems have an emergency shut-off switch that will halt fuel delivery to the unit. It’s easy for these switches to be flipped accidentally if a furnace is located in a high-traffic area. Make sure the switch is in the “on” position before reporting a problem.

In addition to these steps, you may want to vacuum the vent screens around the house. This will reduce the amount of dust blown around. Also, if the furnace exhausts into a flue, be sure that the exhaust route is clear so that carbon monoxide does not back up into the home.

Many homeowners are fully capable of inspecting their furnaces to ensure they are ready for winter. If anything seems out of place or malfunctions, consult with an HVAC professional to make repairs.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men in the world. According to the World Cancer Research Fund International, more than 1.1 million cases of prostate cancer were recored in 2012, accounting for 15 percent of new cancer diagnoses in men that year.

Prostate cancer is often found before any symptoms arise. Prostate cancer screening no doubt contributes to that early detection, but many men are reluctant to be screened, feeling that the digital rectal exam, or DRE, is simply too uncomfortable to undergo. And the Prostate Cancer Foundation notes that there is no unanimous opinion in the medical community regarding the benefits of prostate cancer screening. Men should speak with their physicians to determine if screening is for them.

Men who choose not to get screened for prostate cancer or those who are on the fence regarding screening may benefit from learning as much as possible about the disease. Doing so can help them make more informed screening decisions, and those who choose to avoid screening can learn the potential signs and symptoms so they can bring any problems they might be experiencing to their physicians’ attention.

The PCF notes that not everyone will experience symptoms of prostate cancer, but some men will. Sometimes the presence of certain problems associated with prostate cancer may be indicative of other conditions, including benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. BPH is not cancer, but it is an enlargement of the prostate, and a man’s risk for developing BPH grows every year. For example, BPH is present in 20 percent of men in their fifties, and that prevalence rises to 70 percent among men age 70 or older. Symptoms of prostatitis, a painful condition in which the prostate is inflamed, tender and swollen, may also resemble the symptoms of prostate cancer. But the PCF notes that prostatitis is a benign ailment that is not cancer and does not contribute to cancer.

While not everyone experiences symptoms of prostate cancer, some men may experience changes in their urinary or sexual function. Men who notice the presence of any of the following symptoms should consult their physicians immediately. A need to urinate frequently, especially at night; Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine; Weak or interrupted flow of urine; Painful or burning urination; Difficulty having an erection; Painful ejaculation; Blood in urine or semen. History Of National Hispanic Heritage Month Hispanics comprise one of the most influential and largest ethnic groups in North America. Pew Research Center indicates that the Hispanic population in the United States reached a new high of 55.4 million in 2014.

That accounted for roughly 17.5 percent of the total population of the United States.

The Hispanic and Latino community continues to make a strong impact across the globe. National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates that impact and the roles Hispanics play today and have played throughout history.

National Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 during the presidency of Lyndon Johnson, when the president and the U.S. Congress designated a week to celebrate Hispanic heritage. In 1988, it was expanded to a monthlong observation, and National Hispanic Heritage Month was officially enacted into law on August 17, 1988.

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 - Oct. 15. It honors those peoples who emigrated from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central & South America in particular. However, many people who identify as Latino but do not come from these countries also celebrate this time of year.

The start of the month-long celebration has particular significance. September 15 marks the anniversary of independence for a number of Latin American countries. These include Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, & Nicaragua, each of which declared independence in 1821. Three other nations also celebrated their independence shortly thereafter, with Mexico on Sept. 16, Chile on Sept. 18 & Belize on Sept. 21.

According to The Library of Congress, Hispanics long called the area now referred to as North America home.

The National Hispanic Heritage Month website states that many Hispanic-Americans trace their roots to the cultures of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, and some can follow their family history back to Spanish explorers who set out to discover new trade routes, including Christopher Columbus and his exploration of early America.

Throughout National Hispanic Heritage Month, one can expect to find many festivals, parades, governmentsponsored activities, fairs, & parties celebrating the many contributions Hispanics have made to the world and the United States in particular. Others may share cultural influences through dance & Latin-inspired foods. Students may learn more about influential Hispanic individuals, and there may be classroom activities built around Hispanic heritage as well.
