A Message From IL National Guard/DEA Jessica Guinn

Hello! My name is Jessica Guinn and I just recently started attending the coalition meetings in January. I have some prior experience with the McHenry County Substance Abuse Coalition & look forward to the great movement that BCDPC has to offer. I have realized over the years how important it is to inform & guide parents & youth in a culture that is constantly changing. As a parent of a 5th grader, it is imperative for me to be aware of the challenges that my kiddo is and/or will be facing. The ti mes of drug use & coping mechanisms have changed since I was in school. I want to be a part of the positive change that is available for those that need help. I look forward to this group educating me & making me more aware on how to be a relevant source of information as a parent & better community member. I’m excited to be a part of a community & team that wants the people in it to THRIVE.

- Belvidere Park District is hosting their 5th annual Unplug Illinois Day on Saturday, July 15th.

ADVOCACY DAY

BCDPC will be attending Advocacy Day in Springfield along with other youth substance prevention coalitions who partner with the Illinois Prevention Network (IPN). Advocacy Day will be an opportunity to meet with elected officials and discuss the importance of funding primary prevention. Discussions will also be centered on full flavor bans on vapes, recreational marijuana issues, kratom ban in IL, and coalition goals. Advocacy Day will be funded by Drug Free Foundation.

• Look for our new social media pieces on our Facebook page & other media outlets that share our current data that we collect from the Illinois Youth Survey! We will be putting these blurbs out on Mondays & Thursdays. Content will include data highlights, thoughtful actions, ways to engage in positive programming, and more!

• Visit us at Build a Bike on May 10th for giveaways and information.

• BCDPC & law enforcement staff completed a training for alcohol compliance best practices so more staff may be certified to conduct these in the community.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:

• Register & become a member at bcdpc.org or ask a current member how to get involved.

• Attend monthly meetings held the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 3:30 - 5:00 PM at Sips & Sprinkles in Belvidere across from the YMCA.

• Volunteer during our events.

• Send us your feedback & suggestions.

ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH - APRIL

Parents having the right attitude towards alcoholism can play a major role on their children’s understanding of the impact that alcohol can play in their lives. Common attitudes people tend to have are:

• Being in denial / feeling uncomfortable acknowledging reality

• Underestimating the amount you drink, the duration of your drinking problem, the impact it has on your life

• Overestimating the ability to control your drinking or to quit

Recognizing the stigma surrounding alcoholism is the direction to go for learning about treatment and prevention.

YOUTH COUNCIL CORNER

Youth Council Meetings have changed times & location! Meetings are monthly at Sips & Sprinkles on the second Wednesday of the month beginning at 3:30 PM. If you know a youth who is interested in joining, please visitwww.bcdpc.org or have them come to a meeting.

Some of our youth students recently attended the Illinois Human Performance Project (ILHPP) Conference in January. We are so excited to announce that we will be rebranding our youth portion to become an ILHPP chapter! More information to come in our next issue & check our website for more details.

Explore - Grades K-1 Exploring & broadening the camper’s horizon with new experiences & opportunities!

Large & small group trips, being active, & having fun will build up each camper’s confidence & enhance selfesteem. Location: Rivers Edge Recreation Center.

Achieve - Grades 2-3 Focus on developing positive values & a strong sense of self. Creating an atmosphere of trust & fun is our goal. Each week will bring new achievements & accomplishments through group games, activities, & field trips promoting cooperation & team building. Location: Rivers Edge Recreation Center.

Lead - Grades 4-5 The goal for each of our campers is to set a great example & lead. Lead campers will focus on developing their leadership skills & potential through the opportunity to be a role model to younger campers, a chance to relax & bond, with unique & fun field trips. Location: Rivers Edge Recreation Center.

Succeed - Grades 6-8 Our oldest group of campers will face fun & adventurous challenges over the course of the summer. Learning what it means to set your mind to something as an individual or group with a goal to succeed. Location: Rivers Edge Recreation Center.

Breakfast & snack will be included, & campers are required to bring a cold lunch every day. All campers will receive a t-shirt!
