Gayle Kathleen Scheuer, 82, of Rockford, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, died on February 20, 2023.
Born on June 14, 1940, in Belvidere to Harold and Portia (Scott) Noble, she was raised on a farm near Poplar Grove and
graduated from North Boone High School in 1958. Gayle later graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois.
She married James E. Truitt on May 19, 1962. They settled in Rockford in 1968 where they raised their two boys. Her husband, James predeceased her on May 15, 1997.
She married Nick Scheuer on July 2, 2000.
Gayle worked as a Home/Hospital teacher in the Rockford Schools for 30 years, retiring in 2006. Music was a part of her life from an early age. She sang in choirs starting in high school and later at NIU and the Oratorio Society at the University of Illinois. She played piano and French horn.

Her love of music combined with her passion for supporting arts in the local community led her to roles as President of the Symphony Orchestra Guild, a member of the Symphony Board, the Mendelssohn Chorale, the Music Academy Foundation Board, a 26year member of the Christ United Methodist Church choir, the Northern Illinois Botanical Society, and an avid supporter and volunteer at the Klehm Arboretum. Gayle should be remembered as a lover of life, enjoying ski vacations, traveling around the US and Europe and many boating adventures with her husband Nick.
She also enjoyed the simpler things in life, working in her garden, enjoying her book club, spending time with family and friends and enjoying a cold glass of Chardonnay.
Her kind and generous spirit, and classy yet humble demeanor will be missed, but remembered by all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, May 20th at 10:30 am at Christ United Methodist Church, 4509 Highcrest Rd. in Rockford.
