12 Popular Flower Meanings Flowers are always a great gift for Mom on Mother’s Day! If you’re planning on purchasing a bouquet of flowers to give on Mother’s Day, May 8th, why not make it unique? Here are special meanings behind 12 of the most popular flowers Gerbera Daisy - Meaning: Beauty & innocence Tulip - Meaning: Perfect love & charity Lily - Meaning: Motherhood, virtue & prosperity Rose - Meaning: Love & appreciation Orchid - Meaning: Rare beauty & love Iris - Meaning: Faith, hope & wisdom Alstroemeria - Meaning: Friendship & devotion Chrysanthemum - Meaning: Longevity & Joy Snapdragon- Meaning: Strength & graciousness Carnation - Meaning: Love, admiration & gratitude Daffodil - Meaning: Rebirth & new beginnings Gladiolus - Meaning: Strength of character & moral integrity Keep these flower meanings in mind as you set out to choose the perfect bouquet for Mother’s Day!
How To Corral Spring Allergies Spring is synonymous with rebirth. Each spring, flowers begin to bloom again, grass starts to grow & people from all walks of life rekindle their love affair with the great outdoors. Spring also marks the return of a familiar foe: Allergies. Seasonal allergies can put a damper on even the most welcoming spring day. After all, a day soaking up the sun isn’t so relaxing when it’s also spent sneezing & confronting allergy symptoms like congestion, runny nose & watery eyes. Thankfully, it’s possible for seasonal allergy sufferers to have their spring & enjoy it, too. • Pay attention to seasonal allergy trackers. Seasonal allergies are now easier to track than ever. For example, Pollen.com is an easily accessible & free site that allows visitors to type in their ZIP codes & access daily allergy reports for their towns & cities. Visitors also can see five-day forecasts that can help them plan trips & other outdoor excursions. Weather.com also offers free allergy reports & forecasts. Individuals with seasonal allergies can make use of these sites & plan their activities based on the information they provide. • Stay indoors when allergen levels are especially high. The Mayo Clinic notes that there are several things individuals can do to reduce their exposure to seasonal allergy triggers. That includes staying indoors on dry, windy days. It’s important that seasonal allergy sufferers recognize that some days might be too much to handle. Rain helps clear pollen from the air, so individuals who are avoiding the outdoors on days when pollen counts are high should be able to get outside after a good rain without triggering an attack. • Maintain clean air indoors. The great outdoors is not the only place where allergens percolate. The Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America notes that improving air quality in a home can reduce allergy triggers. Air conditioners can prevent outdoor allergens from entering a home, so utilize units on warm spring days when you might otherwise open the windows. Open windows provide easy entry points for allergens like pollen, so turning on the AC when outdoor allergen counts are high can make seasonal allergies more manageable. • Consider treatments. Over-the-counter treatments like antihistamines, nasal sprays & decongestants provide most individuals with sufficient relief from their seasonal allergies. If OTC remedies are ineffective, treatments such as allergen immunotherapy & a consultation with an allergen may be necessary. Seasonal allergies can spoil an otherwise welcoming spring day. But there are many ways for individuals to corral their seasonal allergies and still enjoy spring sun.

The Peculiar Story Of Cinco De Mayo & The U.S. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrated by millions of people each year. Oddly enough, the majority of those people live in the United States instead of Mexico. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla, during which the Mexican Army overcame significant obstacles to defeat the French Army under the direction of General Ignacio Zaragoza. On May 5, 1862, an attacking French Army battled against Mexican forces that were roughly half the size of their opponents. Despite that decided disadvantage, the Mexican Army won the battle. Mexican forces would ultimately be defeated by the French a year later, but that same year witnessed the first celebrations of Cinco de Mayo in California, where Mexican miners celebrated the heroic efforts of their countrymen a year prior. Curiously, those 1863 celebrations would prove to be a harbinger of things to come, as Cinco de Mayo eventually became a more prominent holiday in the United States than it did in Mexico. The only major celebrations of Cinco de Mayo in Mexico, where the day is a holiday but not considered a significant one (banks & government offices remain open), take place in Puebla, though the neighboring state of Veracruz also treats the day with a greater degree of significance than elsewhere in Mexico. Historical reenactments of the battle & parades are part of celebrations in Puebla. Celebrations in the U.S. are considerable, as many people, including those with no ancestral ties to Mexico, look forward to May 5 as an opportunity to celebrate Mexican culture & food as well as the many traditions that make Mexico such a unique & special place. Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the U.S. bear some resemblance to the country’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, though many American celebrants have no connection to Ireland or the Catholic Church. Rather, the day has become an opportunity for people from various backgrounds to celebrate Irish culture, much like Cinco de Mayo marks a chance to celebrate Mexican culture.

Homeowners enjoy gardening for many different reasons. In addition to adding beauty to a property, gardens can offset grocery costs by yielding tasty produce. They also offer important habitats & food sources for both insects & animals. While growing a vegetable or flower garden can turn into a rewarding hobby, or even a passion, gardening also can be overwhelming - particularly when the results are less than stellar. Gardeners have scores of resources at their disposal, including advice of gardeners who have made mistakes & learned from them. 1. Start small. It is smart to start small & build on what you find successful, which includes plants that thrive in your lawn & garden. This is beneficial if you are unsure of vegetable yields. Several blooming plants producing bushels of crops can be overwhelming, especially if you can’t get to harvesting them in a timely fashion. 2. Assess the soil. Plants need nutrient-rich soil to encourage extensive root systems & produce strong, hardy plants, according to the gardening resource GrowVeg. Nourish soil with organic matter, such as manure, compost, shredded leaves, & natural mulch. Add this organic matter in the off-season to give it enough time to be incorporated. You can have your soil tested for pH & other characteristics at a local garden center. 3. Arm yourself with knowledge. Do you know how deeply to plant seeds & how far apart to space plants? Are you aware of the sunlight needs of certain flowers or plants? If not, read the packaging & do your research so your plants have the best chance of not only sprouting, but also surviving. Many people prefer to start seedlings indoors in late winter & then transfer those plants outdoors when they are stronger & more established. 4. Sit in your yard & observe. Take note of which areas get the most sun & shade. This will help you plan what to plant & where to plant it. Vegetable gardens tend to need ample sunlight to bear pick-worthy produce. You can give plants a leg up by growing them in optimal conditions. 5. Choose hardy varieties. Certain plants have been bred to thrive in your climate, including heat-tolerant plants for climates with sweltering summer sun. Consult with a local gardening center to figure out which plant zone you are in & which plants will do best within that zone. 6. Use rainwater. Rainwater contains fewer contaminants & additives than tap water, which can benefit garden plants. Collect rainwater in rain barrels & use irrigation systems to deliver it to the garden. Home gardens can yield many gifts, from flowers to fruit. Beginners can utilize some time-tested strategies to increase their chances of planting a successful garden.

The Buzz About Bees
Warm weather & extra hours of sunlight spark flowering trees & plants to bloom anew. This is the time of year when the air is sweet with the aroma of blossoms & the familiar hum of insects can be heard all around. Not all “bugs” are the same this time of year. While you probably won’t want ants invading your backyard grill fest, the presence of bees nearby can be a good thing - because almost 90% of wild plants & 75% of the leading global crops depend on animal pollination, indicates the World Wildlife Federation. Bees are remarkable creatures in small packages. The following are some bee facts to buzz about: • There are roughly 20,000 species of bees around the world. Most of them are solitary bees. • Honeybees have a move called the “waggle dance.” It is a clever way of communicating to tell them where to go to find the best sources of food. • Bees can carry up to 122 times their body weight in pollen & nectar. • Bumblebees leave footprint scents behind. They are able to distinguish between their own scents, the scent of a relative & the scent of a stranger as they look for food. They also can avoid flowers already visited. • Should a queen bee perish, the hive workers will select a new young larva & feed it a special food called “royal jelly.” The larva will develop into a fertile queen. • Bees flap their wings 190 - 200 times per second. They can fly up to 15 miles per hour. • Female bees can sting; males do not. Losing the stinger will cause the bee to die. The honeybee only can sting once because its stinger is barbed. Bumblebees & hornets can sting multiple times. • It can require nectar from two million flowers to make one pound of honey. • Many bees are not aggressive. Simply moving away from them can prevent a person from being stung. • Wasps are different from bees in that they are mostly known to be predators. They eat other insects & often food that people eat, which is why wasps are more likely to be found around your cookout. Bees tend to be covered in hair, while wasps (which include yellow jackets) are smooth. Bees are remarkable creatures & should be celebrated as the weather warms up.

Melanoma Signs & Symptoms Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that affects melanocytes, or the cells that produce the skin pigment melanin. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention says that the sun’s UVB rays stimulate melanocytes, & more than 90% of melanomas are thought to be caused by ultraviolet exposure. Melanoma can exhibit different symptoms depending on the part of the body it is affecting, & may not affect everyone in the same way. The following are some of the signs and symptoms of melanoma. • A new spot on the skin that changes in shape, size or color. • A spot or mole that looks different from the other moles or spots on the skin (known as the ugly duckling sign). • A sore that doesn’t heal. • Spreading of pigment from the border of a spot into the surrounding skin. • Changes in sensation in the skin, such as itchiness, tenderness or pain. • Changes in the surface of a mole, whether bleeding, oozing or scaliness. • A dark line beneath the nail bed. • The presence of hard or swollen lymph nodes. • A hard lump on the skin. • Unexplained pain, weight loss or fatigue. • Ocular melanoma, or melanoma that occurs in the eye, may be difficult to see without a professional eye exam. Enlarged blood vessels in the eye could indicate the presence of a tumor. Any symptoms, however benign they may seem, should be brought to the attention of a doctor who can determine if melanoma is present. The Melanoma Research Alliance says there is now a 98% five-year survival rate for stage 0, I & II localized melanoma.

Gary Wayne Wickre Gary Wayne Wickre was born March 22,1944 in Mt. Clemons, Michigan to Julian and Eleanor (Christopherson) Wickre. The second child of six, he cherished family and took the role of big brother seriously. When he was very young, they moved to South Dakota near relatives, and he spent fun times on the farm working and playing baseball. He attended high school in Mankato, Minnesota mostly, but graduated from Dubuque Sr. in Iowa after moving with his family. He then joined the Army and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and served his country with great commitment. After his service he settled in Belvidere, Illinois and worked at the Chrysler Assembly Plant. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, and on November 2,1988 he married Becky Bleakley. He loved to travel together as they served others through the American Legion. He was a life member of American Legion Post 205 of Capron, Illinois. He served many roles throughout his service including 12th District Commander, 2nd Division Commander, and many other roles involving helping the community. He lived as a leader in all things he did, including a passion of sending young men to experience the tradition of Boys’ State. He was a member of Anavicus and the Egyptian Past Commander’s Club. He valued fellowship and service and was a craftsman at heart, designing and building his own home, among other projects, especially cabinetry. He loved gardening and was a life member of the Boone County Garden Club. He was always at-the -ready to lend a hand to anyone and everyone in need. He was a Mr. Fix-it, as well as a talented singer and guitar player. He often shared his gift with family members at special times. His legacy of wise wit, gentle humor, compassionate heart, and hard work ethic will continue through his children and grandchildren. Gary moved to HQ, God’s Army on April 26, 2022 holding Becky’s hand, and is now in his Heavenly Quarters. Those left to cherish him are his wife, Becky, of almost 34 years, who cared for him with amazing patience. His 4 children, 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren: Daughter, Annette (Ken) Brown of Des Moines, Iowa, and their children - Katie & Bryon Coen and their four childrenNeveah, Walker, Harry, and Alucard; Jacob Brown and Tiffany Brown; son, Thomas (Patti) Wickre MSgt, USAF, Retired of Alamogordo, New Mexico and their children - Tim Wickre MMN3, USN, Tami and Dewey Huffmon, Abby Wickre, and Brooke Wickre; daughter, Christi Wickre of West DesMoines, Iowa and her children, Ellie and Jaiden Cole; and daughter, Bethany-Buffy (Joe) Tangen of Pella, Iowa and their children -Thomas, Tabetha, and Theodore; and his siblings and their families: Shirley, Jayne, Daryl, Jackie, and Jeff, all of whom he loved dearly. Memorials in Gary’s honor can be gifted to Immanuel Lutheran Church or to the family.
