Enjoy Safe Bike Rides Riding a bicycle is not only a great way to help the planet by reducing vehicle emissions, but it’s also an ideal physical activity. According to Harvard University, biking at a moderate speed of 12-13.9 miles per hour will cause a 155-pound person to burn 298 calories in 30 minutes. At a faster rate of 14-15.9 miles per hour, a person of the same weight will burn 372 calories. People can ride bikes at any time of year, but cycling is most popular when temperatures are moderate & precipitation is low. Bike riding has always been in fashion, but it experienced a boost in popularity when people were asked to remain socially distant for COVID-19. Walks & bike rides at a safe distance from others became popular & accessible ways to get fresh air & exercise. Anyone who rides a bike needs to take certain precautions. Cyclists often share the roads with large & powerful cars & trucks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Admin. warns there were 857 cyclists killed in traffic crashes in the United States in 2018. Safety is a two-way street, requiring diligence by drivers & bike riders. • Bike riders should be dressed in bright clothing so they can be seen. A well-fitting bicycle helmet is a must, and should be worn every time a bike is ridden. • Wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet & grip the pedals. • Equip your bike with a horn, bell & bright headlight. • Cyclists should ride in the same direction as traffic on the far right-hand side. • Ride a bike that fits you well. If the bike is too big, it can be difficult to control. • Carry items in a backpack or strapped to the back of the bike so belongings do not become obstacles. • Carry a mobile phone & battery charger in case of emergency. • Always have some form of ID on your person. • Drivers should remain alert of cyclists sharing the road & give wide clearance when possible. • Vehicle drivers should look in their side mirrors & around them before opening car doors so they do not accidentally knock a cyclist passing by off the bike. • Use hand signals to alert others to your plans. Cyclists can extend the left arm out for a left turn; make a 90-degree angle with the left arm to indicate a right turn. Putting the left arm down with the palm facing backward indicates stopping or slowing. Cycling safety is important as temperatures rise & more cyclists are on the road.

Father’s Day History Each year, the third Sunday in June is a time to pay homage to fathers & the millions of other men who have stepped into the role of father. While it may seem as though Father’s Day has been around forever, it didn’t become a nationally recognized holiday in the United States until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed Joint Resolution 187 into law. Many thank Sonora Smart Dodd for making Father’s Day happen. In 1909, while attending a Mother’s Day sermon in church, Dodd felt fathers were equally deserving of praise. To honor her own father, a Civil War veteran & widower who raised six children alone, Dodd petitioned for a Father’s Day on June 5th (the anniversary of her father’s death) in her native Spokane, Wash. The celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in June. Another account says Grace Golden Clayton came up with the idea for a Father’s Day in 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia. Clayton was inspired to celebrate fathers after 361 local men perished in a deadly mine explosion. Clayton brought the idea up to the minister of her local church. Historians say that Father’s Day may even be a much older idea. St. Joseph’s Day, which was celebrated each year on March 19 in Catholic nations of Europe since the medieval era, & later elsewhere around the world, commemorates Joseph, the husband of Mary & father figure to Jesus. It was said that Joseph should be held up as the ideal example of fatherhood. The Coptic Orthodox Church celebrates St. Joseph’s Day on July 20. In the Orthodox Christian Church, the second Sunday before the Nativity is celebrated as the Sunday of the Forefathers - celebrating all of Jesus’ male ancestors, with an emphasis on Abraham, the patriarch of the Jewish faith.

Happy Father’s Day - June 19th Belvidere Park District To Host Trip To Cubs Game The Belvidere Park District will host their annual trip to Wrigley Field to see the “New Look” Cubs take on the Padres. Travel will be by air-conditioned motor coach for the 1:20 PM game. The motor coach will leave from the Maintenance Center, 1001 W. Locust St. departing at 9 AM & will return after the game ends (trip will stay for extra innings). The trip is for all ages, however, those under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. How To Stay Mentally Sharp After Retirement If asked to describe how they envision retirement, many professionals might reference travel, time spent with grandchildren & various recreational pursuits. Few, if any, would mention cognitive decline. However, cognitive decline poses a significant threat to aging men & women, especially during retirement. Researchers have long since recognized that certain cognitive abilities begin to decline with advanced age, even among elderly individuals who are healthy. However, despite that decline, the CDC notes that dementias like Alzheimer’s disease are not an inevitable part of aging. In fact, the CDC estimates that as many as 40% of dementia cases may be prevented or delayed. In addition, the CDC reports that it’s not uncommon for routine memory, skills & knowledge to stabilize or even improve as the brain ages. That’s good news for retirees who want to spend their post-work life pursuing their passions & hobbies. Individuals also can embrace some strategies to stay mentally sharp in retirement. • Consider delaying retirement. Even if early retirement is a dream, it might be better to work a little longer than you had planned. A 2021 study published in the journal SSM - Population Health found that postponed retirement is beneficial to cognitive function for all genders, races/ethnicities, educational levels, & professional status. The study reported that those who waited until age 67 to retire experienced less cognitive decline than those who retired prior to turning 67. • Make exercise part of your retirement routine. A lack of structure may seem enticing to individuals who have spent decades working. However, many retirees find that little structure loses its appeal quickly after calling it quits. When creating a new routine in retirement, include regular exercise. According to the Mayo Clinic, studies indicate that people who are physically active are less likely to experience a decline in their mental function. So daily exercise not only gives retirees something to do, but also benefits their brains. • Enroll in an adult education course. A 2014 study examined the association between lifetime intellectual enrichment & cognitive decline in the older population. The study’s authors concluded that lifetime intellectual enrichment might delay the onset of cognitive impairment. Retirees can look into adult learning programs at local colleges & universities to see if anything piques their interest. Retirement can be everything professionals hope it will be, especially for those who make a concerted effort to maintain optimal cognitive function after they call it a career.

Coping With Cancer Loss A positive attitude, a skilled team of oncologists & some supportive family members can blend together to give cancer patients the best fighting chances against their disease. The five-year relative survival rate for all cancers combined increased from 39% to 70% among whites & 27% to 64% among blacks between 1960 & 2020, according to the American Cancer Society. Researchers & doctors are hopeful that those numbers will continue to improve across all genders, races & demographics in the decades to come. Just about everyone has been touched by cancer in some shape or form, & many have had to contend with the death of a loved one. The people surviving those who have lost their battles to cancer may be left with grief & uncertainty about what’s next. Some people may not know how to cope with no longer being a caregiver. The American Society of Clinical Oncology says grieving a loved one comes with intense feelings that may last a year or more. There are strategies that can help people adapt & process their loss. • Allow yourself to feel the pain of loss. When a loved one gets a cancer diagnosis, people may recognize the stakes are serious. Fears about a loved one’s well-being are often put on the back burner when treatments begin & a positive, supportive attitude takes over. But it’s natural to grieve & feel hurt when a loved one loses his or her battle. Whether you cry, scream or take other actions, there is no wrong or right way to work through the pain. • Ignore timelines. The National Cancer Institute says that grief has stages, but not everyone experiences those stages in the same way. Bereaved people usually have grief pangs & bursts. Recognizing that this process will not be the same for you as it was for another frees you from the pressure of conforming to a schedule. • Talk to someone. Knowing your feelings are valid & talking with someone outside of the family for a fresh perspective & support, such as a grief therapist, can help you work through the emotions you are experiencing. The medical team who helped your loved one may recommend a survivor’s group or a therapist who specializes in cancer loss. • Put yourself first. If you lost a spouse to cancer & have children, you may want to address the children’s needs immediately. But you cannot care for the kids effectively without also caring for yourself. Ta ke the time to work through your issues before trying to make sense of what a child or another relative might be experiencing. No one ever imagines losing a loved one to cancer, & such a loss can catch anyone off-guard. When confronted with a loss, it’s important that people recognize working through grief is a process that is different for everyone.

Phyllis E. Gallano, 96, of Belvidere, IL, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, May 27, 2022, in her home surrounded by her family. Phyllis was born March 19, 1926, the daughter of John & Marie (Hedworth) Drilling in Roberts, IL. She graduated from Belvidere High School class of 1944. She married Frederick C. “Bud” Gallano on July 29, 1944. Phyllis & Bud spent their life working together on the farm. She was extremely hardworking & proud to be a farmer’s wife. One of Phyllis’ favorite places to be was on her mower at the home farm on Newburg Rd. Phyllis made her spiritual home at Immanuel Lutheran Church for over 71 years, where she was active in the Ladies Guild, Church Fellowship, & many other committees & activities. She also helped to establish Helping Hands with the purpose of reaching out to help people in the community. Phyllis said, “My love for the Lord & my relationship with the Lutheran Church is so gratifying. Even though I have experienced hardships in my life, I have always been thankful for God’s presence”. Phyllis volunteered in many civic organizations, serving as an election judge, volunteering with the Keen Age Center, Highland Hospital Auxiliary, Homemakers Extension-Farmerettes, Farm Bureau, & many others. Her sensitivity to the needs of the elderly led her to help form the Maple Crest Auxiliary & Junior Auxiliary. In 1998, Phyllis received the Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award for her volunteer work. Phyllis shared her love of bowling with her family & was active in the family business, Concordia Lanes. She was past president of the Belvidere Women’s Bowling Association, a WIBC National Champion, & a youth bowling coach. Phyllis enjoyed a good round of golf & was a member of Bel-Mar Country Club. Phyllis is loved & will be missed by her children, Stephen C. (Mary) Gallano of Belvidere, John F. Gallano of Garden Prairie, Deborah (Ronald) Nelson of Capron, Mary (Timothy) Gifford of Belvidere, Jennifer (Dean) Hazlewood of Victoria, TX; daughter-in-Law, Gail Pearson; twelve grandchildren, twenty-three Great Grandchildren, nine Great-Great-Grandchildren; sister in-law, Hazel Drilling; many nieces & nephews, especially Sue Drilling. She will also be missed by her special friends, Michelle & Meri. Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bud; great-granddaughter Courtney; brothers, John Drilling & William Drilling; sister, Julia Pearce. The family would like to thank Mercy Health Hospice & especially her nurse, Jessica, who shared her compassion & guidance with us. Phyllis’ funeral service will be held & live-streamed at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 3, 2022, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1045 Belvidere Road, Belvidere, IL. Burial in Highland Garden of Memories.
