Celebrating Father’s Day While Social Distancing To say that COVID-19 changed life as we know it would be an understatement. Many people likely never imagined how much their daily routines would be affected when this novel coronavirus was just a blip on the radar at the end of 2019.

Social distancing may have become the new normal, but it doesn’t mean that holidays like Father’s Day have to be a washout. As evidenced by holidays that have already taken place amidst social distancing guidelines, people are finding creative ways to celebrate special occasions. Here are some ways to make Father’s Day special even while social distancing.

• Turn to social apps. Virtual meeting applications, like Zoom, Skype & FaceTime provide invaluable opportunities to speak & connect face-to-face when in-person gatherings are not possible. They also can be used to break bread together or to play games or relay stories.

• Deliver gifts. Take a few cues from the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus & plan to drop gifts & run. Seniors & people who have compromised immune systems are at a higher risk of contracting contagious illnesses. While it may be tempting to visit your father or grandfather in person, even a short visit could put his health at risk.

Instead, leave gifts outside the house. For added fun, hide the gifts & provide scavenger hunt clues.

• Dine out at home. If dining out was something you typically do on Father’s Day, replicate the experience at home. Try to recreate Dad’s favorite meal from the restaurant he loves or see if that restaurant offers curbside pick up. Transform the dining table into a restaurant table, or take the meal outdoors for some al fresco fun.

• Spend time together. One of the silver linings of social distancing is the opportunity for family members who reside under one roof to have more uninterrupted time together. Chances are having the kids nearby & sharing some stories & laughs together will be a perfect way for Dad to enjoy Father’s Day. With some creative thinking, dads across the county can still enjoy the special day they deserve.

Know Your Flag Etiquette For Flag Day June 14th When displaying the flag, DO the following: - Display the U.S. flag from sunrise to sunset on buildings & stationary flag staffs in the open. When a patriotic effect is desired the flag may be displayed 24-hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

- When placed on a single staff or lanyard, place the U.S. Flag above all other flags. When displayed in a row, the U.S. flag goes to the observer’s left. Flags of other nations are flown at same height. State & local flags are traditionally flown lower.

- When used during a marching ceremony or parade with other flags, the U.S. Flag will be to the observer’s left.

- On special days, the flag may be flown at half-staff. On Memorial Day it is at half-staff until noon & then raised.

When flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant & then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. By “half-staff” is meant lowering the flag to one-half the distance between the top & bottom of the staff.

- When the flag is displayed over the middle of the street, it should be suspended vertically with the union (blue field of stars) to the north in an east & west street or to the east in a north & south street.

- When placed on a podium the flag should be placed on the speaker’s right or the staging area. Other flags should be placed to the left.

- When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall (or other flat surface), the union (blue field of stars) should be uppermost & to the flag’s own right, that is, to the observer’s left. When displayed in a window it should be displayed in the same way, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street.

- When the flag is displayed on a car, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.

- When the flag is used to cover a casket, it should be so placed that the union is at the head & over the left shoulder. The flag should not be lowered into the grave or allowed to touch the ground.

6 Ways To Prevent Falls Around The House The National Home Security Alliance says that falls are the leading cause of death due to home accidents. Falls are responsible for 1/3 of all home-related fatalities. Although seniors are the group most affected by falls, these types of accidents can affect anyone. A broken bone may be a minor inconvenience for young people, but fractures are more serious for the elderly. Seniors must take measures to protect themselves against falls.

1. Remove tripping hazards. Examine rooms & hallways for potential hazards, such as slippery throw rugs, floorboards that stick up, loose carpeting, or furniture that blocks walking paths. Remedy these hazards as soon as possible. Address loose floorboards and/or place non slip materials beneath rugs.

2. Install grab bars or railings in certain locations for extra stability or where someone may need leverage getting up from a seated position. They are particularly helpful near toilets, bathtubs, stairways & hallways.

3. Stick to sensible shoes. Sensible shoes fit properly & have sturdy, nonskid soles. Avoid walking around in slippers or even in stocking feet, which are much more slippery.

4. Store items within reach. Store items that are used frequently, such as dishes, in easily accessible cabinets & other locations. This prevents having to climb or reach for them.

5. Install more lighting. Poor visibility can contribute to falls. Lighting in hallways, stairways, bathrooms, & bedrooms - even if it is a small night light - can be enough to light the way.

6. Reinforce your home’s exterior. Falls do not only occur inside. Inspect the perimeter of a property for uneven turf, holes or cracked or uneven patches of walkways. Make sure lighting is working at entryways, & check that exterior handrails are secure.

Heat waves are an inevitable part of summer. While humans can escape indoors to air conditioned rooms when heat waves hit full swing, flowers planted around a property have no such luxury, putting their survival in jeopardy whenever the mercury rises to especially steamy heights.

Wilted flowers that have succumbed to the summer sun are a sight many gardening enthusiasts can recognize. But there are ways to keep flowers safe & vibrant during periods of extreme heat.

• Water at the appropriate times of day. The National Gardening Assoc. notes that it’s best to water in the early morning & evening because less water will be lost to evaporation during these times of day.

• Choose the right watering method. It’s not just when but also how you water that can affect flowers during summer heat waves. Aboveground sprinklers might be great for lawns, but the NGA notes that sprinklers can encourage the spread of disease on certain plants, including roses. Many gardening professionals recommend soaker hoses when watering flowers because they promote deep watering that can help the plants withstand the summer heat.

• Routinely check the soil moisture. Soil moisture can help gardeners determine if their flowers have enough water to withstand the heat. The NGA advises gardeners to dig a 12-inch deep wedge of soil from their gardens to determine its moisture levels. If the top six inches of the soil is dry, water. If that area is still wet or moist, the plants have enough moisture to withstand the heat. Check moisture levels more frequently during heat waves.

• Avoid overwatering. Novice gardeners may be tempted to water more frequently when they see wilted leaves on their flowers. But wilted leaves are not necessarily indicative of suffering plants. Plants release moisture to protect themselves from excessive heat, & that release of moisture can cause leaves to wilt as the plants try to protect themselves by providing less surface area that can be exposed to the sun. So long as soil moisture levels are healthy, the flowers should be fine, even if their leaves have wilted.

No gardener wants to see their flowers succumb to the summer heat. Fortunately, there are many ways to help flowers survive heat waves.

Directions

1 t. dried basil 1/2 t. garlic powder 1/8 t. black pepper 1/4 t. salt

Nutrition Facts Servings Per Recipe: 1/8 Recipe Amount Per Serving: Calories 50 Total Fat 3.5 g Sodium 80 mg Carbohydrates 3 g Dietary Fiber 1g Protein 1g

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Wash zucchini with cool running water & gently scrub with fingers to remove dirt. Dry with a clean towel 2. Cut off stem. Slice zucchini in half, lengthwise. Slice into half-moon discs, about 1/4” thick. Pat zucchini pcs. with a dry, clean towel to remove excess moisture. Put in a medium bowl.

3. Mix oil, oregano, basil, garlic, black pepper & salt in a separate bowl with fork or whisk. Pour onto zucchini, mix gently.

4. Spray a baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Place zucchini onto pan.

5. Bake for 15-20 minutes & flip zucchini pcs. Bake an additional 15-20 minutes or until zucchini is tender & lightly browned

When to use soap and water - Following are common situations when the CDC advises using soap & water. • Before, during & after preparing food. Before eating food. • Before & after caring for someone who is sick • Before & after treating a cut or wound • After using the bathroom, changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the bathroom • After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing • After touching an animal, animal food or treats, animal cages, or animal waste • After touching garbage • If your hands are visibly dirty or greasy When washing with soap & water, the CDC advises people to wet their hands with clean running water (warm or cold) & apply soap. Lather the hands by rubbing them together with the soap, making sure to scrub all surfaces of the hands, including palms, backs, fingers, between fingers, & under the nails. Scrub for 20 seconds before rinsing hands clean under running water & drying your hands, be it with a clean towel or air drying.

When to use alcohol-based hand sanitizer - Hand sanitizer should not be applied to hands that are dirty or greasy. Hands that become dirty or greasy after activities such as gardening or fishing should be cleaned with soap & water. The CDC advises using alcohol-based hand sanitizer: • Before & after visiting a friend or a loved one in a hospital or nursing home, unless the person is sick with Clostridium difficile (if so, use soap & water to wash hands). • If soap & water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol, and wash with soap & water as soon as you can.

Children should always be supervised when applying alcohol-based hand sanitizer. When using alcohol-based hand sanitizers, the CDC recommends covering all surfaces of the hands with the product before rubbing hands together until they feel dry, which should happen after roughly 20 seconds.

There has never been a better time to play golf. However, to the uninitiated, golf can be complicated. There are many different rules & all sorts of equipment to learn & lingo to follow. Fortunately, all it takes is a little research to get started on learning about & ultimately embracing the game of golf. Here are six ways to get started.

1. Start off on a practice range & not on the golf course. The range is a great place to acclimate oneself to the game & practice your swings.

2. Hook up with someone who can show you the ropes. Having someone in your corner guiding you can make it easier to learn & love the game. Work with a local golf pro or enlist the help of a friend with some experience.

3. Learn all you can about the clubs, including which kinds are used for various types of shots. While a golfer is allowed to carry as many as 14 clubs in a bag, you will not need that many when first starting out, nor do you have to invest $1,000s in clubs. Try to find used clubs online if you want to try the sport before committing.

4. Lean toward more loft when selecting clubs. Look for drivers that have at least 10 degrees of loft & fairway woods that start at 17 degrees. This will make it easier to get the ball into the air & can reduce sidespin.

5. Pay attention to short shots as well as the long ones. Spend as much time practicing with wedges & the putter as the driver to really tighten up all of your shots.

6. Learn the proper grip & stance by working with a coach. Invest in a glove to avoid callused hands, as you’ll be spending significant time practicing.
