Helen L. Cormie
Helen L. Cormie, 99, died peacefully on July 19, 2023.
Born on October 1, 1923, in St. Mary’s, Kansas, the oldest child of Matthias & Edith Rodenbaugh. Helen grew up on a small farm with her parents, three brothers & one sister. Throughout her childhood, Helen spent her time helping on the farm, riding her horse Trixie, & learning to
hunt, sew, & cook. As a young woman, she attended business college in Topeka, Kansas, that lead her to a secretarial position at the Seymour Packing Company. While working, Helen met her husband of 69 years, Douglas T. Cormie, at a USO dance during World War II. They married days before Doug was deployed to Japan & the Philippines. After the war, they moved to Doug’s hometown, Belvidere, Illinois. She planted her roots & began to grow her family & became a proud member of the community.
The mother of one son & four daughters, Helen was constantly on the go raising & nurturing her children. She pursued her various hobbies which included: Sewing, quilting, woodworking, swimming, playing cards with her girlfriends, crosswords & more. There is not enough space here to list it all.
Mike passed away on Tuesday, July 4th, 2023 in Goreville, IL where he resided with Kris Magnuson.
Mike was born in Belvidere, IL to Marion & Jean (Behnke) Thornberry on December 9th, 1969.
Mike will be loved & missed by his
12/9/1969 ~ 7/4/2023 parents; 2 sisters Melinda (Wally) Safranek of Texas & Michelle (Jim) Rayphole of Belvidere; his 2 stepchildren, Jessica (Dusty) Jackson & Stacy Pippel; his 3 nieces, Nicole (Harley) Proper, Kaily (Kyle) Weber, Amanda (Tim) Whitman; his 4 nephews, Joshua (Deanna) Rayphole, David Rayphole, Matthew (Victoria) Safranek, Jordan (Katie) Safranek; several aunts, uncles & cousins.
Mike was preceeded in death by his grandparents, Raymond & Marie Behnke and Billy & Hazel Thornberry; and his nephew, Tyler Rayphole.
Mike graduated from Belvidere High School & went on to work for Estwing for 20+ years until moving to Goreville, IL where he worked for Acee’s Neighborhood Market. We would like to thank the employees of Acee’s for all they have done to help us get through this difficult time.
There will be a celebration of his life on July 30th, 2023 at Boone County VFW Post 1461, 1310 W. Lincoln Avenue, Belvidere in the pavilion out back from 1-4 PM as Mike loved anything outdoors.
She also held several positions at different companies in Belvidere including dictation for St. Joseph Hospital X-ray Center & part-time accounting at Whitbeck Wheeler Funeral Home. She was also an active member of St. James Catholic Church & served as Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters. In Helen’s later years, she kept busy with her hobbies & was an honored matriarch among her family, both near & far, whom she continued to nurture & support. She lived life to the fullest, & enjoyed the gifts God gave her throughout her life. Her family will remember her best as being a caring, loving, & supportive mother, grandmother, & greatgrandmother, who encouraged them to pursue their dreams. Her memory will live on with her entire family.
She is preceded in death by her husband Douglas, son Stephen, daughter Cynthia, son-in-law David, & all of her siblings.
She leaves behind three daughters, Mary (Dale) Steurer, Jane Cormie, Pam (Kermit) Stralow; six grandchildren, Cassi Steurer, Marci (Matt Kitchen), Rebecca Steurer, Spencer Hammer, Stephanie (Max) Poe, Taylor (Andrea) Stralow; & eleven great grandchildren, Mattison, Maci & Marli Kitchen; Olivia, Reese, Lillian & Graceann Hammer, Landon & Tenley Poe, and Eleanor & Copeland Stralow.
A visitation will be held at Belvidere Funeral Home, 203 Logan Ave., from 9-11 AM, Friday, July 28. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. James Catholic Church, 402 Church St., 11 AM, immediately following the visitation. A private burial will follow.
