Harold Hammond was born on November 12, 1931 in Belvidere, Illinois to Glyndon & Emma Hammond. In 1947 at sixteen years old, Harold tried to join the army but was rejected for his age. One year later, he tried again & was accepted with his parents’ permission. Harold Hammond’s first survival experience happened on his first Army ship heading for Japan. The ship was disabled by a typhoon & ended up acquiring severe bouts of Cholera, Polio, & Bubonic Plague. After this he & his division of 86 other men were sent to South Korea. In June & July of 1950 his company was shelled by seven North Korean armies. They were outnumbered 1,900 to one. When the shooting was done, there were only 30 soldiers left. They were held captive for 15 days. Hammond finally escaped only after the captives were forced into a dry creek bed where the North Korean soldiers opened fire on the men. Hammond’s life was only spared because a fellow soldier fell on top of him & he played dead before hiding in the hills. He was traveling south for eight nights with no food or water when he came across two U.S. soldiers who gave him a rifle. He was then spotted by a U.S. MP who did not recognize his uniform from the blood & mud splatter & fired at him before realizing he was a U.S. soldier. After Harold was rescued, he was asked to help the soldiers hold the front line, which he did until the fall of 1950. In December of 1950, Harold Hammond was captured once again after going out to try & capture an enemy soldier. This second captivity lasted nearly three years. In that time, he & the other prisoners were forced into nighttime death marches, not fed properly, forced to drink water from rice paddies that were contaminated by animal & human waste, among many other barbarities. Harold Hammond was able to survive these atrocities by recalling his childhood, his family, his mother’s cooking, & focusing on escape. Hammond was finally released on July 27, 1953. He was 21, weighed 89 pounds & was six-feet tall. He was held captive for over 1,000 days & never gave up any information. When he finally made it home to the U.S. where the doctors gave him six months to live. Hammond was awarded 14 Bronze Stars, three Silver Medals, & two Purple Hearts. He was a part of many veteran organizations & volunteered at many hospitals. He had the largest known, privately owned flag collection in the world. In 2007, Harold Hammond was recognized for his heroism, courage, & loyalty by the Illinois Congress. He passed away at the age of 77 on February 21, 2009. Healthy Habits That Become Part Of Your Daily Routine A person’s habits can strongly impact his or her overall health. Unhealthy habits like smoking & a sedentary lifestyle can increase a person’s risk for various conditions & diseases. On the flip side, healthy habits like eating a nutritious diet & getting enough sleep can bolster a person’s immune system & reduce risk for various ailments. Some healthy habits, like daily exercise, can be time-consuming. Busy adults may not have time to exercise vigorously each day, though the U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services urges men & women to find time for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. But not all healthy habits take up time. In fact, adults can incorporate various healthy practices into their daily routines without skipping a beat. • Take the stairs. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator can have a profound effect on overall health. According to Duke University, climbing just two flights of stairs combined per day can contribute to six pounds of weight loss over the course of a single year. In addition, a study from the North American Menopause Society found that stair climbing can help postmenopausal women reduce their risk for osteoporosis & help them lower their blood pressure. • Drink more water. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention notes that water helps the body maintain a normal temperature, lubricates & cushions joints, protects the spinal cord & other sensitive tissues, & helps to rid the body of waste through urination, perspiration & bowel movements. Adults who are thirsty can choose water over soda or other sugary beverages. The CDC notes that sugary beverages like soda & sports drinks contain calories but little nutritional value, making water a healthier way for individuals to quench their thirst.

What To Do When Your Pet Is Lost Pets are beloved members of the family. Pets provide unconditional love & companionship to their owners. When a pet goes missing, it can be devastating for their owners, who want to bring their companion animals home to safety as soon as possible. At least 14% of dog owners lose their pets in a five-year period, while 15% of cat owners lose their pets. The ASPCA indicates that around one in three pets will go missing in their lifetimes. While Lost Pet Research & Recovery says only 6% of dogs are not recovered, a much larger percentage of cats (34) are never found. Therefore, pet owners should take certain steps to prevent lost pets & to help recover them. Train your dog - Well-trained dogs who respond to basic commands like “sit,” “stay” & “come” may be recovered more easily. That’s because you can call for your dog - who may not have ventured too far & have them return to you. People who come across your dog can offer simple commands to sit & stay, & they can be safely leashed. Update identification - The more forms of identification a pet has, the better the chances for recovery. While a collar with ID tags is essential, microchipping is an additional safeguard. Be sure to routinely update the microchip database with your current phone number & address. Act quickly - Don’t waste hours or days waiting for a pet to return. The sooner you begin searching the area, the better the odds of finding them. Start with the immediate area right outside your home & branch out from there. Check nooks & crannies - Pets may become frightened of noises or escape homes to chase other animals. American Humane urges owners to look for places the pet may become trapped, such as in basements or garages. Other places to look include under vehicles. Pets may hide during the day, so return to areas at night. Bring along a toy or treat that may lure the pet out of hiding. Check with shelters - Pets can be picked up & brought to animal welfare organizations or even law enforcement agencies. Pets that are wearing tags or are microchipped may have their owners notified. Animals without identification will sit unless the owner comes to recover the pet. Check shelters every two days. Activate a lost pet alert - Pets can be registered with the microchipping service AKC Reunite. Pet owners can call 800-252-7894 to let the service know their pet is lost & to enable an operator to create a “Lost Pet Alert.” Notify locals - Place ads in local newspapers & offer a reward. Also check found animal ads that may be close to your pet’s description. Pets can go missing, but with fast action & advanced planning, they can be recovered.
