This Wheel Continues To Spin To New Heights
In the late 1800s, few may have imagined that a civil engineer specializing in bridges & other steel designs would help revolutionize not only the skyline of carnivals & fairs, but summertime entertainment as one knew it. George Washington Ferris, Jr., was not a household name before 1893, but he certainly was afterward. After the Eiffel Tower stretched into the sky for the 1889 World’s Fair, officials in Chicago, which would be hosting the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, were looking for something to serve as the hallmark of their event. Organizers announced a competition to design the fair’s centerpiece attraction. Ferris proposed building a 264’ wheel with suspended carriages to take passengers around for an arial view of the fairgrounds. Other engineers claimed the wheel would not revolve. Even the exposition’s organizer Daniel Burnham balked at the plans, which would feature slender rods that would carry people higher than the recently opened Statue of Liberty, claiming they would be too fragile.
Ferris was not the first to envision & build rotating wheels (smaller incarnations called roundabouts were built & featured in Atlantic City), but he was the first to take the wheel to this magnitude & financed much of its building. Ferris’ design had 140’ tall steel towers, a 45’ long axle between them, 250’ diameter wheel with 36 wooden cars that could each hold up to 60 riders & was lit up by 3,000 of Thomas Edison’s new light bulbs. The Ferris wheel was a big hit & made an impression on fairgoers. After the fair, the wheel was moved to Lincoln Park, & later became an attraction once more at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Miss. Unfortunately, Ferris went into debt designing & building his vision, & he later died of typhoid fever while embroiled in litigation. His original wheel, which was later demolished, was the only true Ferris design. But Ferris’s wheel lives on in many forms by ubiquitous copycats, & the name “Ferris Wheel” has become the generic reference for these types of rides. A Ferris wheel is often a staple at amusement parks, local fairs & carnivals & even serves as a permanent sightseeing attraction around the globe. Pushing the limits of engineering, today’s Ferris wheels reach dizzying heights. The tallest in the world is the Ain Dubai, which opened in October, 2021. The observation wheel will be roughly 850’ tall (250 meters) & will tower over what was once the tallest wheel, the High Roller in Las Vegas, which stands at 520’. Other immense observation wheels include the Singapore Flyer, Star of Nanchang (China) & The London Eye. The famed Ferris wheel lives on in many cities & towns. Once a modern marvel, it is now a customary sight & hallmark of recreational fun.

3 Vitamins That Promote Healthy Eyes
A nutritious, well-balanced diet is a vital component of a healthy lifestyle. Though a healthy diet is often & correctly cited as a means to maintaining a healthy weight, a diet rich in various vitamins also can be good for eyesight. As adults plan diets, they can make an effort to ensure these three eye-friendly vitamins feature prominently at mealtime.
1. Vitamin A: The World Health Organization reports that vitamin A deficiency is one of the more common nutrient deficiencies across the globe. In fact, the American Optometric Association notes that vitamin A deficiency is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children. So why is vitamin A so vital to eye health? The AOA reports that vitamin A supports functioning of the conjunctival membranes & cornea. In addition, the Chicago-based Kraff Eye Institute notes that vitamin A deficiency can contribute to problems with night vision. Foods such as carrots, milk, eggs, & pumpkin are good sources of vitamin A.
2. Vitamin E: The AOA reports that vitamin E can help to reduce the progression of age-related macular degeneration, which the National Eye Institute characterizes as an eye disease that can blur cental vision. The NEI also notes that AMD is a leading cause of vision loss among older adults. Vitamin E also can reduce the risk of cataracts. Almonds, sunflower seeds & peanuts are good sources of vitamin E.
3. Vitamin C: Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C helps to neutralize oxidative damage that can contribute to the formation of cataracts & AMD. The Kraff Eye Institute notes that oxidative stress is responsible for various aging processes & occurs when the body experiences an imbalance between harmful free radicals & helpful antioxidants. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can help combat a number of age-related eye issues, which underscores the need to include vitamin C in a diet. Cauliflower, cabbage, lemon, & oranges are good sources of vitamin C.
Vision loss is often accepted as an inevitable side effect of aging. Though certain individuals may not be able to avoid some degree of vision loss as they grow older, a diet rich in vitamins A, E and C can reduce risk for various age-related eye health issues.
When To Test Your Home Water Supply
Water quality is not something people think about all that much, especially in developed nations. Though it can be easy to take water quality for granted in countries with ample regulation & sophisticated filtering systems, there are times when anyone, regardless of where they live, should take stock of the water in their homes.
Frequency of testing - One of the variables for individuals to consider is how long it’s been since they last tested the water quality in their homes. For those who have never done so, those who have done it but can’t recall precisely when or those who know it’s been more than a year since the last test, then it’s a good time to test the water. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends annual testing for coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, & pH levels. The EPA notes this testing is especially important for anyone who is using a new well or has replaced or repaired pipes, pumps or the well casing.
What about public water supply systems? Testing may not be necessary for individuals who get their water from public water supplies. The EPA notes that anyone who pays a water bill gets their water from a public supply system, which is responsible for monitoring & testing water & reporting the results of those tests to the appropriate agencies as well as the individuals who use the water. Homeowners & tenants who pay a water bill should receive an annual water quality report from their water supply utility, while renters can request a copy of that report from their landlords if they do not pay the bill themselves.
What about private water supply systems? Individuals who receive their water from a private system, such as a household well, are responsible for conducting their own water supply testing. These tests should be conducted annually & in the aftermath of a spill or other incident that could taint the water supply.
Are there any special circumstances to test the water? The EPA notes that certain situations may call for testing the water supply, even if it’s provided by a public supply system. For example, the EPA recommends that expecting parents test their water supply for nitrates in the early months of a pregnancy. Testing should then be conducted again prior to bringing an infant home & once more during the first six months of the baby’s life. The EPA notes nitrate tests are best conducted in spring or summer after periods of rain.
An eye, taste and/or smell test also can indicate if the water supply should be tested. Water that stains, has an unusual taste and/or a conspicuous odor should be tested. In these instances, test for sulfate, chloride, iron, manganese, hardness, & corrosion. A local chemical or fuel spill also should trigger a test of the water supply. These tests can be expensive, so contact a local expert to determine which contaminants to test for.

The Nutritional Benefits Of Peaches
Pies, cobblers & smoothies might be the first things that come to mind when people think of peaches. Perhaps nutrition needs to muscle its way into that discussion? Peaches are typically viewed as a sweet treat, particularly in summertime. But peaches also provide a host of health benefits, which can make anyone who enjoys a peach-based sweet treat feel a little better about their indulgence.
Peaches & heart health - Peaches are rich in vitamins & minerals, including potassium. The potassium content in peaches, though moderate, is still significant, as the American Heart Assoc. notes that potassium plays an important role in the management of high blood pressure. In addition, a 2014 animal study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry found that consumption of peach & plum juice provided protection against cardiovascular disease.
Peaches & body weight - One of the keys to long-term health is the ability to maintain a healthy weight from childhood through adulthood. The Cleveland Clinic estimates that a single large peach contains just 68 calories. Peaches also do not contain any saturated fats, making them a good low-calorie snacking option that can help people maintain a healthy weight.
Peaches & cancer risk - A report from the American Institute for Cancer Research linked fruits with a lower risk for cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, lung, & stomach. Peaches are rich in free radical-fighting vitamin C. That could explain their link to reducing cancer risk, as free radicals are unstable atoms that often contribute to cell damage that is a hallmark of cancer. In addition, MedicineNet reports that peaches are high in polyphenols, which studies have found prevent the formation & spread of cancer cells in lab tests.
Peaches & vision - Peaches also can have a positive impact on vision. According to the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station at Rutgers University, a medium-sized peach provides roughly 6% of the daily recommended value of vitamin A. That’s helpful for vision.
Peaches have a well-earned reputation as a sweet treat. However, the powerful peach is more than just a postmeal palate cleanser, and in fact can play a vital role in promoting long-term health.
6 Ways To Kick Bad Breath To The Curb
Halitosis, which is characterized primarily by bad breath, can be an embarrassing condition. For some people, it is an occasional occurrence after eating a particular food. But for others, bad breath can be a persistent problem. Getting to the root of bad breath can help people have a fresher mouth & avoid feelings of embarrassment. According to the Cleveland Clinic, halitosis affects one in four people across the globe. It may occur due to poor oral hygiene, but it also may be linked to dry mouth, heartburn, diseases elsewhere in the body, or eating foods like garlic & onions. While some cases of bad breath may require specialized treatment, these six strategies may help people with more mild cases of the condition.
1. Get routine dental cleanings at the dentist’s office. Brushing & flossing alone may not be enough to clear bacteria or properly clean plaque & tartar from teeth.
2. Saliva helps to wash out the mouth, & if the body isn’t making enough, it can lead to bad breath. Rewetting mouthwashes & drops may help.
3. Quit smoking, which can cause dry mouth & increase risk for gum disease.
4. Avoid certain foods, notably garlic & onions, & spices that may contribute to halitosis. After such foods are digested, they enter the bloodstream & are carried to the lungs, ultimately affecting breath, says the Mayo Clinic. Consuming these foods in moderation may alleviate bad breath.
5. See a dentist if you suspect you have an infection. Infections in the mouth may lead to bad breath. These can occur from tooth decay, gum disease, mouth sores, or even surgical wounds. Getting infections under control will have a positive impact on breath.
6. Use decongestants & saline rinses when necessary. Upper respiratory conditions like allergies & colds could lead to post-nasal drip or infections in the throat that can contribute to bad breath.
Bad breath affects people for a variety of reasons. But it is typically preventable & treatable. Speak with a doctor if bad breath does not clear up with at-home remedies.

BCCA - Helping Older People Stay Connected
Article From: Kelly Hillan, Exec. Director of The Keen Age Center
Caring
Dear Friends,
It’s the mission of the Boone County Council on Aging (BCCA) at Keen Age Center to help older people in our area stay connected. Research suggests that one in four adults 65 & older are socially isolated. Ultimately, we strive to have zero older adults in Boone County report that they are not socially connected. Being lonely & socially isolated creates some significant negative consequences including depression, lowered immune system, heart disease & dementia. Staying connected for most people does not happen without putting in some effort - it needs to be intentional. We offer multiple opportunities for connections.
Transportation: We literally help connect people with other people & places as operators for Boone County’s Public Transportation program. Bus rides are available to all residents of Boone County regardless of age.
Information & Assistance: Information & Assistance staff help navigate Federal & State programs that benefit older adults by lending a hand with obtaining resources & benefits.
In-Home Care: As part of the Illinois Dept. of Aging’s Community Care Program, our in-home caregivers are specially trained to help older adults stay in their own homes as long as safely possible. For those eligible, non-medical in-home care can include assistance w/household tasks, meal prep, laundry, shopping & running errands, personal care & companionship.
Lending Closet: A variety of canes, walkers, commodes, shower benches, wheelchairs & transfer chairs are available for loan at no cost. We also accept donations of these items that are clean & in good condition.
Friendly Call Program: This outreach program was created to meet the social needs of people not able to connect with others in person. Friendly Call provides calls as often as desired to maintain connections through friendly conversations. Keen Age Center: The agency’s Senior Center known as Keen Age Center provides a variety of activities & programs, as well as volunteer opportunities. The agency partners with Lifescape to provide onsite meals, as well as Meals-on-Wheels. We can all agree that it is important to support older people & provide an opportunity for folks to thrive, have a purpose & make a positive impact on our community. If you would like more information about any of our opportunities to stay connected, please reach out to us at (815) 544-9893 or www.keenage.org or follow Keen Age Center on Facebook.

Findings Show That Pet Obesity Is A Growing Problem
No pet owner wants to envision a visit to their local veterinary office concluding with a discussion about their companion animal being on the cusp of serious health problems. However, a growing number of pet owners could soon be forced to confront that very scenario.
A recent survey from the Assoc. for Pet Obesity Prevention uncovered some sobering truths about the state of pet health. They noted that pet obesity rates in the U.S. have been steadily increasing over the last several decades. A growing body of evidence has linked obesity in dogs & cats to a host of serious ailments & outcomes, including: Skin & respiratory disorders; Renal dysfunction; Metabolic & endocrine disorders, such as diabetes; Orthopedic disease, such as osteoarthritis; Certain types of cancer; Decreased life expectancy.
So how high are obesity rates among cats & dogs? According to the APOP report, 61% of evaluated cats were classified as overweight or obese by their veterinary professional. Among that total, one in three cats was classified as obese in 2022. The APOP report indicates that 59% of dogs were classified as overweight or obese by their veterinary professionals. Though obesity rates among dogs are significantly lower compared to cats, the report still indicates that more than one in five dogs (22%) was classified as obese in 2022.
cwilliams@ludwigco.com
Another troubling finding to emerge in the APOP report is the misperception among pet owners regarding their animals’ condition. The report indicates that roughly one-third of pet owners whose animals were classified as overweight or obese classified their pet’s weight as “normal,” “ideal” or, perhaps most surprisingly, “thin.” This underscores how small a grasp pet owners have regarding their pets’ physical condition. Recognition of what defines a healthy weight for pets & knowledge of how to help pets achieve that weight can ensure a healthier future for millions of pets. Pet owners are urged to speak with veterinarians to develop a plan that ensures the long-term health of their pets. For more info on overweight & obesity in pets visit petobesityprevention.org.
