What To Know About COVID-19 Booster Shots It’s been more than two years since the World Health Organization declared a global COVID-19 pandemic. Since that declaration, which was made in March 2020, remarkable progress has been made by scientists, medical professionals & researchers devoted to combatting the potentially deadly COVID-19 virus. The successful rollout of various vaccines has increased protection against COVID-19 across the globe, potentially saving hundreds of millions of lives. Millions of people are now encouraged to supplement that protection by getting one & possibly two booster shots. ®

What are booster shots? The health care experts at OSF HealthCare note that a booster shot is essentially just an extra dose of a vaccine. The protection afforded by many vaccinations begins to dwindle over time, so booster shots can serve as a safety net as protection wanes. Are COVID-19 boosters recommended? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention recommends a booster dose for individuals of a certain age who have already received full doses of the Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines. Booster guidelines are subject to change as more research is conducted, but as of June 2022 booster recommendations were as follows: • A booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine is recommended for people 16 & up if it’s been six months since their second dose of the vaccine. • A booster dose of the Moderna vaccine for adults 18 & over if it’s been six months since their second dose. • A booster dose for anyone who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine if it’s been two months since they received the single-dose vaccine. Individuals who received the J&J vaccine can get another dose of that vaccine or a single dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. • Certain immunocompromised individuals & people age 50 & over who received an initial booster dose at least four months ago are eligible for a second booster to increase their protection against severe disease from COVID-19. • Adults who received a primary vaccine & booster dose of the J&J vaccine at least four months ago may now receive a second booster dose using an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (i.e., Pfizer or Moderna).

A Beginner’s Guide To Fall Planting & Maintenance Spring & summer are perhaps the busiest times of year for gardeners. However, fall also is a prime time to tend to gardens. The tree & bare root retailer Bower & Branch advises that soil temperatures in many regions of the country may still be warm enough to encourage root growth well into the start of winter. Furthermore, fall is often the ideal time to plant, fertilize & keep a garden going or to get a head start on next year’s bounty. Here are some tips to make the most of the fall gardening season. • Think about fall annuals & bulb planting. Near the end of September, start planting cool-weather-loving pansies & violas for pops of color as summer flowers fade. Also, it’s a good idea to stock up on bulbs that will bloom in the months to come before they sell out in stores. Wait until the temperatures really cool down before planting them in desired spots for spring sprouts.

Time to Live Well

• Sow salad seeds. Lettuce, spinach, radishes, & arugula tolerate cooler temperatures. Try new & interesting lettuce varieties and enjoy salads well into the fall season. • Take inventory of the sun. Positioning a garden carefully means maximizing hours of sunlight, which begin to dwindle in the fall. Experts say gardens grow best in sunny locations that receive six hours of direct sunlight each day. This is where container gardens can be helpful, as they allow gardeners to move plants into spots that will get ample sunlight. • Fill in landscaping gaps. Some fall plants can add color around the landscape & brighten up homes to add curb appeal. In addition to pansies & violas, asters, kale & chrysanthemums are fall blooms. Keep in mind that mums can come back year after year. So take them out of those flower pots & get them into the ground. They can be enjoyed next year as well, sprouting in early spring & developing leaves & buds through late summer. • Clean up unwanted growth. Fall is an ideal time to cut back spent vegetable plants & get rid of errant weeds. Rather than bagging leaves, mow them with a grass catcher & then add the mix to a vegetable garden as an excellent soil insulator. The nitrogen & carbon will fertilize the soil, enhancing growing possibilities & limiting weed growth. • Propagate plants in the fall. As temperatures gradually begin to cool, start taking cuttings from perennials, gathering seed pods from azaleas & rhododendrons & dividing hardwood cuttings, says the resource Gardening Know How. Consult with a garden center or horticulturist on the proper ways to propagate stems using rooting hormone & other techniques. • Continue to water plants. Water is essential in the fall & winter as roots can still be growing. Gradually reduce watering duration as plants go dormant. Fall planting & maintenance extends gardening season & improves the chances of growing a healthy spring garden.

Need A Little Help Out Of Your Chair?

WE HAVE LIFT CHAIRS!

The COVID-19 pandemic taught the world many things & reinforced some lessons learned long ago, including how something invisible to the naked eye has the potential to make people extremely ill. That lesson is applicable in many different situations, including food preparation. Though it did not garner many headlines, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention notes that an E. coli outbreak between June 2020 & October 2020 infected 40 people in 19 states. Twenty of those affected were hospitalized, & four developed a type of kidney failure. E. coli outbreaks are often linked to contaminated leafy greens like spinach. But E. coli is not the only danger lurking in kitchens. Proper food handling & safety measures are necessary to prevent food borne illnesses such as E. coli & salmonella. The CDC & the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety & Inspection Service breaks food safety down to four key practices: Clean, separate, cook, & chill. Clean - Contaminants that lead to food poisoning can be found on foods as well as surfaces around the kitchen. It’s essential to wash hands with soap & water before, during & after preparing foods, as well as before eating. In addition, wash countertops with hot, soapy water before & after food preparation, & clean all utensils & cutting boards. Fresh fruits & vegetables should be rinsed under running water to dislodge dirt & potential pathogens. Separate - The risk for cross-contamination in the kitchen is significant. Never use the same cutting boards & utensils for raw meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, & ready-to-eat foods. Keep raw meats away from other foods when grocery shopping so juices do not inadvertently get on items. All perishable foods should be refrigerated, & those with potential pathogens should be separated from other foods in the refrigerator. For example, don’t stack a package of chicken on top of the cucumbers you’re planning on using for a raw salad. Cook - The right internal temperature helps to reduce risk of illness. Bacteria grows most rapidly between 40 F & 140 F, doubling in number in as little as 20 minutes, says the USDA. This temperature range is called the “Danger Zone.” Do not defrost foods on the counter where they can slide into the danger zone. Also, all raw beef, pork, lamb, veal, seafood, & poultry should be cooked to safe minimum internal temperatures. Generally these range from 145 F to 165 F, depending on the type of food & the cut. Use a food thermometer & a temperature safety chart to determine desired doneness. Chill - Even after foods have been cooked, bacteria can be reintroduced & reproduce. Place leftovers in shallow containers for quick cooling & put them in the refrigerator or freezer within two hours - or within one hour if the house is hot or foods have been outdoors. The refrigerator should maintain a temperature of 40 F or lower & freezers at least 0 F. These guidelines are just the tip of the iceberg. Learn more about safe food handling at www.nutrition.gov/topics/ food-safety/safe-food-preparation.

Dear Friends, In the article, “Striking a Balance to Avoid Dangerous Falls” at https:// www.aarp.org/politics-society/advocacy/info-2019/tips-preventing-falls.html the author, Catherine Alicia Georges, states that, “Falls are the leading cause of both fatal & nonfatal injuries to older Americans. Every 11 seconds, an older adult goes to an emergency department to treat an injury from a fall, according to the National Council on Aging. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention found that death rates from falls among adults 65 & older increased more than 30% between 2007 and 2016.” Activities to help maintain balance & stay active: • Work on strength & resistance training. Consider lifting weights & doing Pilates & exercises which build muscle. • Walk & use stairs if you can. Join or start a walking club if it will help motivate you. • Improve your balance. Yoga can help older people. So can martial arts training such as tai chi. Reach out to your Primary Care Provider: • Have your vision & hearing checked regularly. Clouded vision or impaired hearing can greatly boost your chances of falling. • Talk with your doctor or ask your pharmacist about medication side effects that could increase fall risk. Immediate changes to make: • Wear the right shoes. Find a pair that won’t make you slip. • Remove tripping hazards. Check your home for what can cause a fall. Use slip resistant mats instead of throw rugs & keep electrical cords out of the way. The Keen Age Center has several options to help you stay active and maintain your balance: • Yoga at 8:30 AM & Chair Yoga at 10:15 AM - Monday, Wednesday & Friday • Let’s Get Moving at 8:30 AM - Tuesday & Thursday • Bingocize at 10:00 AM - Monday & Wednesday Lifescape is offering a new, unique program at the Keen Age Center called BingocizeTM that mixes exercise, health education, & bingo to help overcome health problems. New 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

People experiencing a mental health crisis have a new way to reach out for help in the U.S. They can simply call or text the numbers 9-8-8. Modeled after 911, the new three-digit 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is designed to be a memorable & quick number that connects people who are suicidal or in any other mental health crisis to a trained mental health professional. The primary goal of the new number is to make it easier for people to call for help. Lawmakers & mental health advocates also see this launch as an opportunity to transform the mental health care system & make care easily accessible everywhere in the United States.

Common Questions About Assistance Dogs Assistance dogs help people overcome a myriad of challenges en route to living more independently. The Americans with Disabilities Act defines service animals as dogs that are individually trained to perform tasks for the benefit of individuals with physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disabilities. How does someone qualify for a service dog? Written documentation from a health care provider indicating that an individual is being treated for an emotional or psychiatric disorder or disability is all that’s required. How does someone get a service dog? Assistance Dogs International is a coalition of nonprofit organizations that raise, train & place assistance dogs. Though ADI does not directly provide, train, certify, or register individual assistance dogs or assistance dog teams, their member organizations do. Individuals seeking an assistance dog can visit assistancedogsinternational.org to access a list of member organizations that might be able to provide them with an assistance dog. Many locally based organizations across North America can connect individuals with service dogs. “Assistance dog” is a generic term for a guide, hearing or service dog. Dogs that are sought to provide protection, personal defense or comfort do not qualify as assistance dogs. Does insurance cover service dogs? Service dogs are expensive, & various sources indicate the cost of such animals can reach, & often exceeds, $20,000, which is on the low end of estimates. The average cost is between $20,000 & $60,000, a price tag that reflects the extensive training these dogs require. Because individuals typically require documentation from a health care provider to qualify, that might make some believe the dogs are covered under their health insurance. However, that’s not the case, though there are various ways for people in need of assistance dogs to offset the cost of such animals. Some people may be able to finance the cost of a service animal, while others may be eligible for grant assistance. Various nonprofit organizations also train & match service dogs with people in need. Anyone in need of an assistance dog should explore all of their options, including contacting an organization like ADI, to learn about the many ways to offset the cost of these animals.
