DRIVERS

Slow down near bus stops & watch out for kids. Red flashing lights and an extended stop arm means the school bus has stopped to load or unload children.

On four-lane roadway with at least 2 lanes of traffic traveling in the opposite direction, only those lanes of traffic traveling in the same direction as the school bus MUST STOP.

Look out for children in residential areas, playgrounds & school zones.

Watch for children on bicycles, especially at intersections & driveways. Young bicyclists have a tendency to dart out without looking for traffic.

CHILDREN

Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes early to avoid rushing & never run to or from the bus.

When waiting at the bus stop, stand at least five giant steps away from the curb.

Wait until the bus comes to complete stop, the door opens & the driver gives you the okay before approaching the bus.

Make sure the bus driver can see you. Always take at least ten giant steps forward before crossing in front of the bus & never behind it. Use the handrails when entering or exiting the bus to keep your balance, & never push or shove.

If you drop something near the bus, don’t try to pick it up. Tell the bus driver instead.

Always look left, right & left again before crossing the street. Cross at crosswalks or corners whenever possible & never cross from in between parked cars.

POWER WHEELS ROAD RACE 9/15

Children ages 2-7 are invited to bring their personal Power Wheel & compete in a friendly race! The competition will be divided into two age classes - ages 2-4 & 5-7, competing separately. Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place for both age classes. Registered Power Wheels must be original stock vehicle with not modified batteries. Helmets are required for participation. Games will be played on a reduced-size field & goals for participants age 5-7 years old. Participants in the 8 -10 age group will play on a U10 field size. These age groups will practice once a week & play games on Saturday mornings.

Mary Marcia Rankin

Mary Marcia Rankin, 77, of Poplar Grove, passed away on August 9, 2023. She was born on November 27, 1945 in Memphis, Missouri. The daughter of Genevieve (Peterson) & Melvin Drummond. On October 16, 1966 she married the love of her life, John Arthur Rankin who passed September 9, 2022. Together they shared 56 wonderful years of marriage,

a son, Matt, & 3 granddaughters with whom they loved very much & were actively involved with. They spent much of their time watching them, playing with them, & supporting them at their school sports and activities.

Mary was a dedicated nurse. She worked for many years at Maple Crest Nursing Home. Mary was also a talented artisan in the craft of rug hooking. She enjoyed going antique shopping, & spending quality time with family & friends. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her son, Matt (Karli) Rankin; grandchildren, Megan (Trace) Johnson, Abi (Matt) Dhamer, Riley Rankin; great-grandchildren, Finley, Crew, Coen, Kase & Blaine; brother, Mike (Jeanie) Drummond; sister-in-law & friend, Sherry Twitchell; as well as numerous nieces & nephews whom she loved dearly.

She is welcomed into heaven by her husband, John Rankin; their infant children, Staci & Christopher; and her parents, Genevieve & Melvin Drummond.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 9th, 2023, with additional details published at a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in her name.

Glenna Parks, 85, passed away August 2, 2023 surrounded by her family after a courageous sixteen year battle against cancer. Glenna never gave up the fight until the very end. She was born January 23, 1938 in Mohawk, TN to Willie J. (Boat) & Ruby Aletha (Walton) Douthat.

Glenna enjoyed collecting salt & pepper shakers, as well as buying & wearing graphic tees, especially ones for breast cancer survivors. Glenna (GiGi) was admired for her love of family & friends, strong work ethic, & will for life. Her greatest enjoyment was her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.  Glenna was loved & will be missed by her sons, Darrell (Linda) Johnson and Daniel Parks; daughter, Maurita (Rollie) Thompson; grandchildren, Sabrina (Robert) Weimerskirk, Michael Moyer, Brantley Thompson, Amy (Tom) Bunting, Amber (Keith) Romanek, James Moyer, Jennifer (Garrett) Simons, & Levi Parks; numerous great-grandchildren & greatgreat-grandchildren; sister, Margie (John) Slater; sisters-inlaw, Carolyn Douthat & Lynn Douthat; and many nieces & nephews.

She is welcomed home by her daughter, Janice Lynn Parks; parents W.J. & Ruby Douthat; stepmother, Earnestine Douthat; brothers & sisters-in-law, Reece & JoAnn Douthat, J.P. & Imogene Douthat, Samuel Douthat, Bill & Barb Douthat, & Richard Douthat; grandson, Jonathan White; & great-grandson, Lukas Cassioppi.

Per Glenna’s wishes, a graveside service was held at Flora Cemetery, with a celebration of life to be held at a later date. The family would like to thank Dr. Korkmaz & his staff at OSF Center for Cancer Care, the staff at Maple Crest, & the staff of OSF Hospice, especially Gina & Kim.

Gary R. Gamlin

Gary R. Gamlin, age 76, of Bowling Green passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 15, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was born on November 10, 1946 in Belvidere, Illinois to the late Gail Burton Gamlin & Nina Lorraine (Larson) Gamlin. In addition to his parents, he was

was preceded in death by his wife, Bernadette J. Gamlin, whom he wed on June 7, 1980.

Gary was a proud United States Marine Veteran, serving his country during the Vietnam War. He & his family moved to Bowling Green in 1980 after being transferred for General Motors. He retired after 35 years in the engineering department at GM. He was a devout Catholic & parishioner at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He often was found on the golf course, where he loved spending time. He was a member of The Franklin Country Club & The Bowling Green Country Club, & was an organizer for The Kenny Perry Golf Scramble. He was the treasurer of St. Vincent De Paul for over 10 years utilizing his skills as a CPA & was an avid sports fan of the St. Louis Cardinals & Chicago Bears. He had a fun & quick witted sense of humor & had a heart for his family, especially his grandchildren, whom he lived for. He & his wife ran B & G Bulbs where they sold plants, flowers, trees & various landscaping services. Above all of this, he was a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather & friend that will be dearly missed. His memories will be cherished by his children, Jeff Pattawi-Gamlin (Mercy), Gina Graham (Tim), & Dena Thomas; his grandchildren, Kristen Hatler, Justin Graham, Ashley Lindsay (Conner), Hannah Knaup, Chloe Thomas, & Jaxson Thomas; his greatgrandchildren, Luna, Ridge, Harper, Henley, Nova, & Hadlee; his siblings, Terry Gamlin (Jill), Rob Gamlin (Chris), Ruthann Freeman (the late Pat Freeman), Janis Strate (Jeff), Susan Gamlin, & Greg Gamlin; several nieces & nephews also survive.

Funeral Mass was held Friday, August 18, 2023 at 12:00 Noon at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Visitation was held Thursday from 4-7 pm with a prayer service at 6:30 pm & Friday from 11 am - 12:00 Noon at the church. Military funeral rites followed the mass. Cremation was chosen. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Teresa Ministries.

Arrangements have been entrusted to J.C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel.
