A 2017 survey from Consumer Reports found that 55% of people living in the United States take a prescription medicine. The survey also found that those who take prescription drugs use an average of four such medications. But aging affects more than just work and play. As men & women age, their ability to perform everyday tasks, including driving, may diminish as well. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that, as people age, certain changes they experience can affect their ability to safely operate an automobile. Changes in eyesight, physical fitness & reflexes may require aging drivers to reassess their skills behind the wheel. The NHTSA notes that drivers can ask themselves the following questions as they try to assess their driving abilities.

How is my eyesight? The American Optometric Assoc. notes that vision changes naturally occur as a person ages. Such changes do not necessarily mean drivers have to give up the keys to their vehicles. In fact, they may just require more routine eye examinations. The NHTSA says having trouble reading signs easily, recognizing someone from across the street, seeing streets signs & pedestrians, & handling headlight glare are common signs of age-related eye problems.

Can I control my vehicle? Age-related loss of strength, coordination & flexibility can make it hard for aging men & women to control their vehicles. Some signs that drivers might be having trouble controlling their vehicles include trouble looking over shoulders to change lanes, difficulty moving foot from the gas pedal to the brake pedal & difficulty turning the steering wheel. Pain in the knees, legs or ankles also can make it difficult for drivers to control their vehicles.

Does driving make me nervous, scared or overwhelmed? Drivers who feel confused by traffic signs & traffic (including pedestrian traffic) should stop driving until they can discuss the issue with their physicians.

Medication can sometimes make drivers feel sleepy or confused, & some aging drivers even find themselves overwhelmed in otherwise normal driving situations.

Are my loved ones concerned about my driving? Aging drivers may feel offended when family members question their ability to drive. However, the NHTSA notes that sometimes other people notice things about a person’s driving that the person does not. The concern expressed by loved ones should not be taken lightly.

Human beings are accustomed to taking certain measures to protect themselves when spending time in the sun.

Applying & reapplying sunscreen, avoiding the outdoors during certain times of the day & drinking plenty of water while outside are just a few of the ways people can safely soak up summer sun. But what about dogs?

Should dog owners be equally protective of their four-legged friends before letting them run around in the backyard or fraternize with fellow canines at the nearest dog park?

According to the American Kennel Club, dogs can get sunburned just like their human counterparts. In addition, the AKC notes that sunburn can make dogs more vulnerable to certain types of skin cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanomas & hemangiomas. Sunburn also can exacerbate preexisting conditions like autoimmune disorders & dermatitis.

Some dogs may be especially vulnerable - While no dog is immune to sunburn, some are more vulnerable than others. The AKC notes that hairless breeds like the American Hairless Terrier need sun protection whenever they will be outside for extended periods of time. In addition, dogs with white or thin coats & those with lightpigmented noses & eyelids also are especially vulnerable to sunburn. The AKC also says that dogs with thick coats of hair are not immune to sunburn, as many such dogs shed their coats during especially warm weather, thereby making them more vulnerable to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Dog owners can speak with their veterinarians to determine how vulnerable their dogs are to sunburn.

What dog owners can do - Dogs can benefit from sunscreen just like their owners. However, dog owners must only apply dog-specific sunscreens to their furry friends. The AKC advises dog owners to avoid applying sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or para-aminobenzoic acid, or PABA, to their dogs, as these can be toxic when ingested. Ingestion is likely as dogs typically try to lick their skin after sunscreen has been applied, so dog owners must take this warning very seriously. The AKC also recommends using waterproof sunscreens with a minimum sun protection factor, or SPF, of 30.

Don’t just go all in - Before applying sunscreen to a dog’s entire body, pick an area of its body to apply a small amount. Then wait a little while to see if the sunscreen causes an allergic reaction. If the dog is not allergic, apply the sunscreen about 20 minutes before going outside, keeping a watchful eye on your pooch to be sure he or she does not lick it off. Although spring & summer are widely seen as the peak of gardening season, the mild temperatures of autumn can be a prime time for planting vegetables as well. Certain late-season treats like carrots, kale, spinach, & turnips can thrive in fall gardens.

Many different foods are quick crops that can go from seed to table in about six weeks. When sown in early fall, these vegetables will be ready to put on the table for mid-October feasts. Beets, green onions, broccoli, & cabbages can be planted in late summer for fall harvest. Gardeners who live in hardiness zones 8-10 (the southern portion of the U.S.) can plant fall vegetables as late as December. Many of these plants can tolerate light frost, which may even help sweeten the vegetables.

A handful of unique factors need to be taken into consideration when planning fall vegetable gardens.

• The summertime location of the garden may still be adequate, but be sure to choose a location that gets eight full hours of sunlight per day.

• If using an existing garden site, clear out any detritus from summer plants and any weeds that have sprouted.

If you are planting a new garden, remove any turf before tilling the soil.

• Amend the soil with sand, compost, manure fertilizer, & any other nutrients needed depending on the types of vegetables you intend to grow.

• While fall vegetables can be grown successfully from seeds, it may be more time-friendly to work from larger transplants, advises the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension.

• Some plants may need a little protection as they grow if temperatures begin to dip. Cover with a blanket, cardboard box or plastic tunnel to insulate.

Remember to water according to the vegetables planted & to keep an eye on readiness for vegetables. Turnips, beets, rutabagas, & carrots can be dug out when the roots are plump & crisp.

Vegetable gardens need not cease when the last days of summer vanish. Fall produce is delicious & can be easily planted and harvested even after the first frost.
