Twenty-Eight years ago, I came to Belvidere as an answer to my continued prayer to God, & to embark on a ministry to shepherd you in your time of mourning. As I reflect over this time, I have seen many blessings in this great community. Death, as many of us know, is one of the most difficult life events, that we as humans must endure. We tend to struggle with two major facets; our human loss & separation from those we love, & our spiritual implication; that part of us that grieves. Over these years I have had the privilege to witness the love that a community can offer to the loss of one of their own. I have witnessed the outpouring of comfort from those who attend the visitation; sometimes lasting into the late of night; I watched you stand in line for hours, sometimes in the rain & snow, just to have a moment to reassure a grieving family that they are not alone on this journey of loss; that they are loved & cared for. You stand ready to help in an appropriate way to ease the struggle & pain of loss. I witnessed your attendance and presence at the ceremonies that give thanks to God for His creation & the celebration of life. I have heard your words of remembrance, & comfort to the families, & I have been touched by the sentiments of love you have shared as you remembered your loved one. I have stood with you at the cemetery, gently present as you take those first steps into a new reality. We are blessed to have such a loving & caring community.
Diann & I will continue to pray that God blesses each of you, that His grace & peace be with each of you. Never forget that you have a covenant keeping God, who promises to be with you in your storms. He promises to be with you in each season of your life. He promises to be in the midst of your laughter & in your tears, your dancing & your mourning. His love for you will never end.

A study published in the journal Science Advances found that, of the 8.3 billion metric tons of plastics that have been produced since 1950, only around 9% has been recycled. Plastics take roughly 400 years to degrade, so much of the plastics that have not been recycled are ending up in the world’s oceans. In fact, projections from environmentalists suggest that oceans will contain more plastics than fish by the middle of this century. By reducing reliance on plastics & recycling the plastics they do use, nature lovers can do their part to combat this significant threat & protect the natural settings they enjoy so much.
• Plant trees. Planting trees could help combat the issue of rising carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. It is important that individuals know the baseline numbers in their lipid profile, including HDL, LDL & triglyceride levels. Doctors may differ in their interpretations of how cholesterol levels factor into the bigger picture of a person’s lifestyle & overall health. What is cholesterol? A waxy, chemical compound, cholesterol often gets a bad rap. However, the American Heart Association says it is actually needed to build cells. The liver makes all the cholesterol a person needs. Additional cholesterol comes from diet. There are two types of cholesterol carried through the blood. Lowdensity liproprotein (LDL) transports cholesterol particles throughout the body. This is considered “bad” cholesterol because it can build up in the walls of the arteries. High-density liproprotein (HDL) picks up excess cholesterol & takes it back to the liver, which is why it is considered “good” cholesterol.

Why is cholesterol sometimes concerning? When present in the right amounts, cholesterol is instrumental in building healthy cells. When there is too much bad cholesterol in the blood, that can pose a problem. That’s because it can increase risk for heart disease, warns the Mayo Clinic. In high amounts, LDL cholesterol can deposit fatty residue in the blood vessels. These deposits will grow over time & harden, blocking off the flow of blood through the arteries & making vessels less flexible, a condition known as atherosclerosis. Sometimes cholesterol deposits break off suddenly from the walls of blood vessels & then form a clot that can lead to a heart attack or stroke. In addition to cholesterol, doctors will measure triglycerides during lipid profiles. The Mayo Clinic says triglycerides are a type of fat in the blood. Having high triglyceride levels also can increase risk for heart disease.

What is National Voter Registration Day? National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday to get Americans registered to vote & educate them about how to vote on or around Election Day. One & a half million people registered to vote on National Voter Registration Day in 2020.

Symptoms of thyroid cancer - Thyroid cancer often presents as a lump in the thyroid & does not cause any other symptoms, which can make it challenging to diagnose. Nodules often are detected during imaging tests being used to test for other illnesses. If lumps are large enough, they may show when looking in a mirror or may cause pain or trouble with swallowing & breathing. A doctor may recommend an ultrasound & physical exam if thyroid cancer is suspected. A fine needle aspiration biopsy also may be ordered.

Are there different types of thyroid cancer? There are several types of thyroid cancer, including:
Thyroid cancer is a relatively uncommon form of the disease, especially when compared to more prevalent types. In fact, approx. 44,000 people will be diagnosed with thyroid cancer in the U.S. this year, compared to more than 280,000 with breast cancer & 150,000 with colon cancer. The thyroid is a gland located in the base of the front of the neck & is produces hormones that regulate a number of functions - blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, & weight. It also affects how individuals consume oxygen.
• Anaplastic thyroid cancer: This grows quickly & can be difficult to treat. It tends to occur in people older than 60 & may cause severe symptoms, like neck swelling & difficulty breathing & swallowing.
Who gets thyroid cancer? Adults & children with an inherited gene that causes increased risk for medullary thyroid cancer should be cautious. Some high risk people consider having a thyroidectomy (thyroid removal) as a prophylactic way to prevent thyroid cancer. Women are more likely to get thyroid cancer than men, & Whites are more likely than Blacks to develop it. Individuals who work around radiation also are at an elevated risk.
• Follicular thyroid cancer: A rare type of thyroid cancer that primarily affects people over the age of 50.
