May 14, 2015 CondĂŠ Nast 1 World Trade Center New York, NY 10007 (212) 286-2860 contact@vogue.com Dear Ms. Anna Wintour, Vogue has been both a style and writing inspiration for me throughout my high school years. I am applying to be an intern with one of your writers this summer. I feel I could learn a great deal from observing and working with them. I have spent one year on the Boone High School Legend Yearbook staff and gained familiarity in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and with posting articles on a publications website. I will be able to apply these skills when interning at Vogue. In addition, not only have I mastered news writing, but the style our publication chose had a personal focus on the subject, the same type of personal focus your stories about the celebrities on the cover are written with. I have also learned how to meet deadlines well, which I know is a value for your tightly-run magazine. Thank you for considering me for this internship position. I will also contact one of your writers to let her know I am applying for the position. Sincerely,
Albany Alexander Enclosed: resumĂŠ

I saw journalism listed as an elective class when I transferred into public school in 9th grade. Since I was already a competent writer, I decided to try it out. Journalism class turned out to be my favorite all year. I loved how many new skills there was for me to learn and the idea of putting them all together to create a book was so exciting. This school year, I joined yearbook staff. Once on staff, I learned more than I ever thought I would. I learned how to budget time well in order to make deadlines. If I was behind, I stayed after school to work on my page until I was all the way caught up. Before journalism, I had never used a DSLR camera. I learned how to use the settings and use photography techniques such as creative angles. Yearbook design was also new to me, so I learned the design principles and how to incorporate them while adding a creative flare to the pages as well as using Photoshop and Indesign. I was committed to the staff. I stayed after school anytime it was necessary and worked my hardest on every deadline. Being a part of a staff who all strived to meet a common goal together (the book) was something I had never been a part of before and I loved it. I added to the Yearbook by making almost all my deadlines and giving my best effort on every page I was a part of. In the future, I will apply the writing skills I have used directly to my job, because I want to be a magazine writer. I will also benefit greatly from the time budgeting skills I have learned by being able to make deadlines out in the work field.
self-analytical evaluation
This deadline was unique in many ways. First of all, there were three stories instead of one. This changed the writing, design, and pictures. It was a challenge to write three stories. Me an my partner, Megan Pirino, met up over a holiday to write them all at once. The design was different because we had to fit all three stories without trapping any of the gray space. Pictures were actually easier because they were environmental instead of candid due to the stories being profiles. Paulo’s picture proved to be the most challenging. We almost did not make the photos deadline in the first place because the dates to meet in the weight room and take his photo were not working out. The day we finally shot the photos was a bit awkward. Me and Megan came in together and I explained to him what the page was about and what poses I needed for the photos. After I finished explaining, I had to ask him if he would mind taking off his shirt. We had decided to ask him to do this because he is a bodybuilder so we figured seeing his body would best represent his story. With a shy head shake, he expressed that he did not, however want to take his shirt off. So, we went on and got the pictures done. Another element of this spread that was uncommon was the connotation of the spread itself. The words weird and obsession both have a negative connotation to them, so we had to work hard to eliminate the negativity as to not represent our three subjects in a bad light.

Clips cover/divider page feature presentation / Y22 / The feature on Haley Goldman was my favorite I’ve ever done. The Deadline 1picture says so much about her personality
and the fork mod is a great representation of her collection. I love both the headline and story. It’s almost comedic because the thought of her going to a restaurant and stealing spoons is so outrageous, but it is a real hobby for her.
sports action photo / Y15 / I was taking photos at the basketball game for my beat and I was determined to get some good shots. I stood as close to the sideline as I could. I am proud of the way this picture turned out and I was able to use it in my basketball page in the yearbook this year.

student life spread / Y28 / I like the environmental photos. I think they show each person’s personality well. The design with the three stories had a great look. All three stories were challenging to write, but rewarding in the end. This whole spread came together nicely and I am proud of it.
