Dear Mr. Johnathan Bridges, I am applying to be a member of the internship program at Chick-Fil-A headquarters for the summer of 2016. I accompanied my father, Paul Alexander, in January of 2016 on a trip to your headquarters. I got to tour it and see the fundamentals of your program as a whole, diving into the marketing strategies in specific. I appreciated the family atmosphere, professional excellence and unique marketing strategies I observed while I was on my trip. I feel I could gain much more knowledge from the Chick-Fil-A marketing program, so I would love to work there on a summer internship. I can bring creativity, dedication and great writing to the table at Chick-Fil-A. I am certified in Adobe Photoshop CC and I have experience in InDesign and Illustrator as well. I have writing experience from Yearbook as well as AP Language and Composition, two classes I took in high school. My writing style I use in yearbook caters to one of your main demographics, teenagers and their parents, so I am used to thinking through their perspectives, which would help me in marketing to them. Additionally, I learned how to meet deadlines while on yearbook staff, which I know is a value at your corporation. I learned to work well with many different types of people while on yearbook staff, because many of my deadlines were with partners and I worked under nine editors. I know my teamwork skills will benefit you and your company because you value the family dynamic and people working well together. Thank you for considering me for this internship position. I will also apply through your website. Respectfully,

Albany Alexander Enclosed: Resume

S E LF EVAL U AT I ON

alban yalex ander I began this year with confidence as a returning staffer. This year was different from last because I went in with more confidence and developed skills. I thought ahead in deadline 2, which involved five stories and I got the deadline done on time because I planned ahead. As a seasoned staffer, I wanted to take on challenges to better my skills, so Deadline 3 I chose the math classes page. I barely missed the deadline, by half an hour, but in the process of the page my mind stretched to think of boring subjects from new angles in order to create good content. The difficult pages I took on caused all areas of my journalism to improve. One element which was weak the previous year was design. I improved greatly in my design skills this year and it shows in both my portfolio design and the designs of the content within my portfolio. I saw myself grow the most with difficult deadlines, like deadline five and deadline seven. In deadline five, I learned the hard skill of using Illustrator to create info graphics. I spent roughly five hours on my home computer creating and tweaking an entire page of info graphics for this religion page. I took the graphic on as a challenge and pulled it through to completion. In deadline seven, I learned the soft skill of communicating firmly with a partner. I paired with a more challenging staffer and she did not value timeliness like I did, so I adapted and chose to hold her accountable and be firm in asking her what I needed from her. Another hard skill I developed was photography. I struggled in my previous year in staff with camera settings, but this year I learned many more skills and went from having 15 photos in the book to having 17, including one dominant photo, which was a first. My interviewing improved; I learned how to get better quotes through asking more questions, a soft skill I had the previous year, but developed greatly this year. Senior year, I will take my skills and be the strongest staffer I can. I will continue to take on difficult deadlines and seek out challenges, because that is when I see myself improve the most. I will strive to be the best writer, designer, photographer, interviewer and partner I can possibly be. Journalism has sparked a passion in me for writing and interviewing. I plan to pursue journalism through college, because it is what I love to do.Yearbook helped me find the career path I want to embark on after high school.

alban yalex ander This page proved the most difficult page I have tackled in my two years on staff. It began as a page on religion, then morphed into an in-depth on religion. The page consisted of the story, 1,200 words long, and the info graphic, which was actually 17 small info graphic elements combined into one. I took on the info graphic, so I spent numerous hours on the computer and created my first attempt at an info graphic. Matt, my Editor In Chief, saw the potential in the first draft, so he challenged me to work with what I had and redo the elements within. My second info graphic draft proved successful and I only faced minor tweaks after that. I learned a valuable new hard skill of using Illustrator to create info graphic elements. The story began with Jae, my partner, and I on a two hour phone call. I was sick, but we had already decided we would write it together, so we did. After the first editor read it, we had to rewrite, so this meant another lengthy phone call and the piece was rewritten. It traveled through the other editors smoothly until it reached Ms. Burke, our advisor, and came to a screeching halt. We realized we wrote the story entirely wrong. At this point, Jae was sick as well and we needed new interviews and a third rewrite. Jae decided to take the reigns of ownership the story. She rewrote the entire story two times more and it came out beautifully. I continued with the edits on my side of the page. We missed deadline, but I learned enormously more than any other deadline I took on this year. The finished product reflected the hard work, effort and time Jae and I put into the page. I learned from this deadline that communication is of the utmost importance in a publication. Next year, I will be sure I know every editor, and Ms. Burke, is on the same page as me before I move forward on creating content for my pages. Of the elements on the religion page, I particularly enjoyed the info graphic, because it represents a completely new skill I developed for myself.

R E FL E C TI ON #2

alban yalex ander Y1. Feature Writing: Student life. “Across the World.” I found it challenging to interview for and write five stories alone in the time span of one deadline. I worked ahead in order to meet deadline. I liked this spread because each student had a completely different story and they were all interesting. My two favorites were Andrea Gil-Arcila and Isabel Gibson. Andrea had an intense story and Isabel had a hilarious one, so they complemented each other well.

Y32. Academic Spread. “Math Just Got Real.” Writing about math is difficult because there is no action or thrilling excitement or emotion involved. I chose the unique angle of the sophomores in calculus because I thought it would involve more emotion. There was less emotion in the quotes then I had hoped, but the story turned out well and paired excellently with the profile about Dr. Tachon on the other side of the spread.

Y23. Informational Graphics: Single. “Don’t Stop Believing.” I created this info graphic on my own and it was the first info graphic I made in my journalism career. I learned by doing and I am very proud of the way it turned out. It was difficult to represent so many religions because there are a lot of facts out there about religion, so it was difficult to choose the ones to use.

The wrap up for the University high school game turned out easy to write because the girls basketball team played a high scoring game. With lots of action came many options for plays I could write about.

I chose to travel to an away game because I knew it would be an important game to cover. The girls played a high energy game, but the wrap up was more difficult than I presumed it would be because the braves lost by 31 points.
