May 16, 2014 Joshua Jackson Band Director Sound of the Braves 1000 E. Kaley St. Orlando, FL 32806 Dear Mr. Jackson, The Sound of the Braves is a well established band that is unique and I would like to have the chance to contribute to the unity within it even further. I enjoy winning competitions and representing the Boone band by our amazing performances. I would like to have a chance to be on the leadership team in order to promote our image and make an impact on our performance throughout the season. I am applying for woodwind captain because I want to make a difference and unify the band. My background in various bands and orchestras enables me to be a good candidate for this position. I have played rigorous musical selections and been a part of large groups, all with sharing a passion for music. Being a part of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra and All-County has really opened my eyes to the different styles of music. I am more qualified to help others understand their different parts because of my skills that I obtained through these different organizations. I have also learned many leadership qualities through being the team captain of my soccer team which I can use to aid in my position on the leadership team. I know an interview would allow me to show you my potential as a leader of the woodwind section and I thank you for considering me for the position. I will call back in a week to see what the next step is for my application. Respectfully yours, Elena Berisha enclosed: resume

Self Evaluation Throughout my middle school years, I always wanted to be on yearbook staff. I saw the fun time they had in the class and how cool it was when the book came out (yes, even the tiny, 50 paged booklet). Going into the “Upcoming Ninth Grader’s” assembly, I remember looking down at my flier. “Journalism I” was written under the electives column. I was so excited to spend a year learning all about photography and everything I needed to know in order to be a part of staff the following year. Being on yearbook staff was a completely different experience from Journalism I. Nothing really prepares you for the stress of deadlines. My time on staff has taught me a lot about, not only technical yearbook things, but about myself. I learned a lot about time management and how to handle deadlines. In yearbook, I can’t just let an obstacle stop me from making deadline. I have to figure it out. Whether that be finding another angle on a story or re-shooting a picture, it must be done, for the sake of the book. I have become proficient in Photoshop and InDesign, learning skills that can be an impressive tool in the workforce someday. I was responsible for my events and my pages. Part of the process of getting a page together, ready for print, is using these programs to basically put all my creativity into a tangible product. Each deadline had specific goals we had to accomplish- such as getting to your section editor for pictures, captions, and body copy. These goals really helped improve my time management skills. I used to procrastinate a lot more than now. It caused me a lot of stress in my life, especially academically. In the future, I will most definitely be using journalism ethics to guide my moral values in life. There are things used in simple things, such as interviews, that can pertain to your whole lifestyle. A big thing I learned this year was not to change anyone’s words. Another skill I learned was how to work with a partner. Working with another person requires a lot of compromise. I had to learn how to respect the opinions’ of others and how to divide up the workload and the credit of the page. This year, I provided a lot of insight to the staff about different things around campus that most of the other staffers were unfamiliar with, specifically things like band. I also helped anyone I could whenever they asked for it. If I was on downtime, I usually was helping someone make edits or placing a picture for them. This year, I did my best to be available to those who required my assistance. Often, my afternoons would consist of a choice between band or yearbook. This year, I was very committed to make the most out of my time on staff. If I had to skip yearbook after school, I’d stay after the next day. I tried my best to come in the yearbook room for lunch the week before deadline in order to be close to reaching our goals. All in all, yearbook has taught me many life lessons that will certainly help me perform better in my life.

Reflection 1 The boys’ soccer page was definitely my proudest achievement of the year. This was my first deadline working completely independantly; I made all the decisions and I was responsible for everything. This was both a good and a bad thing because I was entirely at creative liberty with the page, but on the other hand I had no one to fall back on. I am extremely passionate about soccer. It is my favorite sport and I really enjoy watching it, so creating a spread about it was enjoyable for me. Going to the games and tweeting was interesting because I understood the game. Unexpectedly, during the middle of the deadline, I came down with the flu. I was out of school for a week but I still managed to checck out a laptop and work on the whole page at home. I interviewed the boys’ from my house phone and when I got back to school I had them all review their interviews and sign them. I stayed during lunch and came to both workdays. Unfortunately, I did not make majors with this deadline due to time constraints but I truly believe this page is great, nonetheless. Another obstacle I encountered while doing this page was the lack of communication between the coach and myself. He was very unresponsive at the beginning but eventually he gave me the stats I needed. I really love this page and a huge part of it is because of the dominant photo. It took so much time to find the perfect lighting and the perfect setting for the camera in order to get even semi-good pictures shot. Most of my pictures were blurry or way too dark because I experimented with the camera a lot. Over a thousand pictures later and I finally shot this one. The perfect one. It has so much action and I’m very proud of it. The season for these boys was very exciting considering they beat the top two teams of the district. Originally, my angle was something completely different, but after a few interviews I realized that all that these boys wanted to talk about was the fact that they won these two specfic games. It was really interesting to experience the changing of story angles. Another part of the page that I love is the pun that I used for the secondary coverage. The player’s name is George Barr so I said that “Player Raises the Barr” because of the amount of pain he is in due to his broken leg. The layout of the page remained pretty much constant but the pictures changed so many times. We had a lot of blurry photos and so eventually we just used some from Dean Stewart Photography. This page was a page that I am extremely proud of and although it wasn’t the best one considering the timing, I think it’s my favorite because it shows my growth as a staffer, coming from all these deadlines with a partner and then producing a product just as good with only myself and my own two hands as company.

Y2. Sports reporting Spring Supplement: Crew p.006

I like this story because of all the emotion behind it. Crew kids do not receive nearly as enough credit as they should for all the work they do to prepare for different regattas. For this story, when I went on my interviews, I specifically asked for any of the pain they went through. I am proud of this story because I think it conveys a lot of the hardships crew goes through that usually goes unrecognized.

Y15. Sports action photo Boys Soccer p.107

After a tremendous amount of shots, I finally got the perfect one. This picture is one of my favorite pieces from this year because of the action and speed it shows. I love how the opponent is in midair, throwing himself to the ball, while our defensive player is blocking him. The picture is really sharp and looks great in print. I especially like their faces in this picture because they’re both straining really hard and are really into the game.

This was the first time I had ever written a short sports story and I think it was quite successful. I like the headline because puns are funny. It was a challenge to write a story that is completely to the point and as short as possible. I made this story as interesting as possible even though nothing very unusual happened during the game, which is why I think it was so successful.

I enjoy this picture a lot because of the way the water looks. I love how you can see their reflections in the water. This photo has good lighting and interesting angles, with the way the oars hit the water and the way the boys are arranged in the boat. The muscles from the rowers are flexed, showing how much they were working. p.68 Homecoming Dance

This picture fulfills the rule of thirds and has great lighting. The colors all match and go well together. The blue’s and oranges. I love the way the clouds provide texture in the background and the angle I shot it from is interesting- from the bottom up. There is a slight depth of field from the way his hand is over the railing that makes the photo come to life. I really wish this photo had been published somewhere because I love the emotion and fun portrayed in it. There’s a lot of great colors in it and I like the depth of field caused by the one girl being in front of the one who’s face is visible. The lighting creates an atmosphere that describes a school dance- dark, yet fun. It is a good candid.
