Julie Freeman Baylor Round Up Yearbook Advisor 232 Castelaw Building Baylor University Waco, Texas 76798 254-710-4562 Dear Julie Freeman My name is Sarah Berlinsky and I am interested in being selected as a staffer of the Baylor Round Up Yearbook. I feel that I am very qualified for this position and I have a great amount of experience with journalism, digital design, photography, interviewing as well as meeting deadlines and editing. My sophomore, junior and senior year I have applied myself to many jobs and responsibilities in this criteria for my high school yearbook; Boone Legend. My sophomore year I was a staffer which consisted of filling pages with pictures (taken by myself) as well as coming up with a story and alternative coverage and infographics. The yearbook I was apart of my sophomore year, Just Saying won a 2012 Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Crown award as well as a 2012 National Scholastics Press Association Pacemaker award, the two most distinguished awards a high school yearbook can receive. My junior year I was apart of the yearbook advertising staff which included responsibilities I listed above as well as business and management responsibilities. My senior year I became the Ads editor which had the additional responsibilities of creating design layouts for Senior ads for my staffers and editing their pages and keeping organization of the ads section of the yearbook. Working for Boone High School’s yearbook the past three years taught me a lot about independent work, deadlines, communication with business, good people skills, how to conduct interview with individuals and many other prime necessities any publication staffer needs. I have also become extremely familiar with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop and I have started to work Adobe Illustrator as well. Most of all, I have been taught great technique as well as ethics and guideline for journalism writing. I know that journalism writing differs quite a bit from classroom English writing. I believe my experience and knowledge would be an excellent asset to your staff. I appreciate your consideration for your staff. I would like to meet with you personally however so I can personally express my capabilities to you directly. I also attached a resume so you maybe evaluate my experience for yourself. I look forward to hearing back from you. Respectfully yours,

Sarah Berlinsky Enclosed: resume

Doing a full page story for Mrs. Sarah Kittrell was kind of a last minute decision between Burke and I. This woman was a huge part of Boone and was retiring after 45 years of teaching, so she really did deserve a full page like Ziglar did. However the decision was made only about a week before it would have to be sent off. I don’t think this was a terrible piece at all really, I just wish a little more TLC could’ve gone into it. I wish it could’ve gone through more editors or we could’ve found better pictures, everything was very last minute, and I just though Mrs. Kittrell deserved a little better. If I really learned from this deadline it was asking people for help. I couldn’t have done it without the help of multiple staffers looking her up in old yearbooks and cobbing for me. It really is okay to ask for help sometimes when you need it, just don’t take advantage of it.

A large hardship this year for me was motivation. Being sick most of the year and being torn between two loves, (yearbook and cheerleading), it was hard to set my full attention on my job. Being sick and staying up really late affected me immensely with my work. It made me very spacey and tired during class which would lead me to giving up easily which would kill me later during crunch time. I learned that you you have to put good in to get good out which meant taking care of myself. I also learned that even when you feel like you want to give up or put something off, you really have to push yourself to get it done and find an inner motivation, which was my love for this book and not letting people down. When I did do that, I would always amaze and surprise myself with what could accomplish. Overall I wish I could have handled this year much better and put a lot more effort into it, I believe in the end I learned from my mistakes and I hope to keep doing so in the future.

My goals at the end of the first semester was to be a better leader by taking initiative, staying healthy so I can be in good shape when I am working and to motivate myself better. I believe I accomplished all three of these in some way by doing one thing; stopped making excuses. I would always con myself out of doing the best thing for me because I would be lazy and unmotivated to do them. I really had to fight with myself to ensure doing all three of these things. I gave myself reasons to work to help motivate myself. I set reminders to help my staff and doing things without being asked. Lastly, I was more conscientious with how I treated myself so I have my head in the game when it came to crunch time.

This is the first time I wrote a beat on a website which is also the closest I’ve come to reporting live news. I believe writing a short brief story in under 24 hours shows my more jounalistic side apart from design. I would like this represent me because it’s very different from the kind of work I usually do which shows I can excell in mutiple ways in journalism.

My junior and senior year I have been assigned the baseball page which allowed me to experiment quite a lot with photography and angles. It wasn’t until the very last game I shot that I tried this angle. I believe this excels my other pictures because it captures a clear picture of the action and clear the face is which is really difficult to both get.

FINISHSTRONG. In the home game against Montverde on April 10, senior Robert Coble finishes his swing. “[Our biggest strength is] experience because there are a lot of seniors. We all know each other really well. We have good relationships on and off the field, which helps us communicate during the game,” Coble said

Looking back on my past portfolios and what I have written in them I believe I’ve accomplished a lot of goals that I gave myself. I saw that I’ve definitely grown in design and theme concept. I’ve also noticed that I overcame my anxiety about big work loads which was really a hardship my sophomore and junior year. My first two years, whenever I was stressed about a deadline, I had a tendency to cry, a lot, and completely breakdown which didn’t do anything but put me more behind and make me more stressed. I’ve learned how to deal with stress much better and have learned not to let it hold me back from accomplishing difficult and scary tasks that life gives me. My motto for this year was Keep Calm and Carry On; it’s cheesy I know, but it really describes the best way I’ve handled stressful situations. Lastly I believe I’ve grown much more as a leader especially this year. I learned the best way to be a leader is by leading by example more than anything.
