My sister inspired me to get started in Journalism when I was in 8th grade and she was a senior. I originally wanted to be on yearbook because my sister was but after I took Journalism I changed my mind. Four years later, choosing newspaper has changed my life by showing me that I want to pursue journalism in the future. This year I have learned many new skills. I learned more about dedication especially as senior issue came along. I stayed after school everyday, which caused difficulties in other classes. I wanted to stay after in order to relieve stress from other staffers and to make the issue perfect. I also learned about teamwork. I’ve learned that it’s alright to let others help and that I don’t need the stress of doing everything alone. For example, Senior issue I was overloaded with stress because of all my stories. If I wouldn’t have gotten help from Gabi, Ciara and Mrs. Burke I would have been a mess. I also helped other staffers but senior issue I had to focus mostly on my own stories. I have also learned more about goal setting. At the beginning of the year, I set a goal to improve my designs and become more creative. This year I’ve gotten out of my comfort zone of feature stories. Looking back on my work this year I think I accomplished this goal. I can tell looking at my stories I’ve gotten better at Photoshop and InDesign. Lastly, I learned more about deadlines. I am always stressed but I have learned how to like the rush of deadline because of how I feel when I see all of my hard work published. Deadlines have helped me mature and become more responsible. I know how to meet deadlines therefore it will help me in the future. I know my experience with newspaper and deadlines will help me in the future. I know this because with college and jobs there are always deadlines involved. I have been an asset to the staff by always helping others. I mostly helped the new staffers. For example, I would often help Garrett with story planners and answer all of his questions.

REFLECTION

My most significant piece of work was my story on hipsters and coffee shops. This was my first story that was actually designed well. It was difficult at first because I had never designed a quiz before. I struggled but it is my favorite because it turned out so well and I enjoyed doing it. With the finished product my favorite part is how I color coordinated everything. I liked the color pallet and how different colors throughout the whole page represented different levels of hipster. It totally changed from the first draft to the final draft. The first draft clearly needed a lot of work. The final product looks so much clearer and it is designed better. It has flow to the quiz and the first one looked confusing for the reader.

Stardust Listening to a local band playing and enjoying the different varieties of foods while competing in board games, is a common occurrence at Stardust. One can rent movies, buy books, play board games and take photos with friends in the photo booth. Not only is there plenty of entertainment, there is a variety of food including vegan options. Stardust also sells coffee both hot and iced, as well as homemade desserts. On Sundays they offer a brunch with different items each week. Although it is quality food, Stardust prices are high compared to Austin’s and Drunken Monkey. On Monday evenings from 6-10 they turn their parking lot into the Audubon Park Community Market. The market sells community produce and has a live band. Wednesday nights Stardust has Show and Tell, where people share funny and interesting personal stories. Just by opening the front door, one already has a taste of what Austin’s Coffee shop is all about. One hears loud alternative music that resounds in a relaxed atmosphere. There are multiple couches and seats scattered around the establishment. Austin’s provides a hip place for customers. Friday nights, Austin’s offers a different event, like acoustic night, live bands, live comedy, poetry nights and independent films. Go to austinscoffee. com to see their weekly listing of events. They are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Austin’s only buys organic fair trade coffee beans. They roast their beans on site for freshness. Austin’s has a wide variety of coffees. They have the brew of the day $1.85 for a small, $2 for a medium and $2.15 for a large. They also offer cappuccinos, lattes, espressos and tea all ranging from $1.75-$4.35. Aside from coffee, Austin’s sells sandwiches and desserts like apple pie and cheesecake at an affordable price.

Students looking for a place to do homework and drink coffee will find that Drunken Monkey provides a quiet atmosphere to work and hang out with a group of friends. Drunken Monkey has multiple couches to lounge on and books to read, as well as games to play. Although it is a place to focus on homework, on Friday nights they have stand up comedy from 8:30-10:30. People of all ages can come and laugh with friends or family. They sell coffees, desserts and food such as brownies and almond milk cappuccino coffee. Their coffee is fair trade and organic coffee beans are imported from all around the world. They roast their own coffee to make it fresh for their customers like Austin’s. For those who just want a cupa-joe, they offer a drive-thru service. They also sell smoothies, and vegan or gluten free desserts, such as chocolate chip cookies. Their menu, similar to Stardust and Austin’s, offers a variety of similar homemade options.

Freshman overcomes icy obstacles Athlete sets personal goals for the future By DELanEE BoGan Hearing her que at the 2013 Sunshine State games, freshman Lillian Rexford hit the ice, and began her routine. Suddenly she felt a sharp pain and blood dripping down her hand. She hit her hand on the blade on her ice skates in the middle of her routine. She got 13th place out of 16 other competitors. Rexford didn’t let this one competition phase her. “I told myself it was just a competition. I used it as a learning experience and moved forward,” Rexford said. After attending a friend’s ice skating party 6 years ago, Rexford began taking lessons. Rexford now skates for the Central Florida Figure skating club. Rexford participated in other sports like ballet before ice skating, but was not as passionate about them. “I was excited that she had found something she loved,” Christina Rexford, mother, said. In ice skating there are different levels of difficulties; pre-preliminary, preliminary, pre-juvenile, juvenile, intermediate, novice, junior, and senior. After starting at 8 years old, Rexford found herself trying to catch up to

skaters her age. Most skaters her age were in higher levels of ice skating because they had years of experience. “I always told myself to just be myself and didn’t let it affect me seeing other people ahead. Now, I’ve passed some of the girls and am at the same level as most girls,” L. Rexford said. In one year, Rexford skipped three levels and got into the intermediate level. Rexford’s coach, Jill Pitman, said that she has never seen an ice skater do this before; that it unprecedented. “I was impressed and proud of myself. [Since] I skipped three levels I had to work hard to get where I am now,” L. Rexford said. Before skipping levels, Rexford spent most of her summer in 2012 at the Maitland RDV Sportsplex center. She practiced Monday through Friday throughout the summer. In a regular practice, Rexford works on footwork for her routine by going over moves and turns as well as her jumps and spins. She walks through her routine and at the end of practice she ties everything together with her routine music. During the summer and when she skipped three levels, Rexford also took a fitness class and skating power class to keep improving. The fitness class was not on the ice, and it focused on strength and

endurance. The skating power class increased her speed and skating skills. During the school year, Rexford doesn’t have time to take extra classes, but still practices 10-12 hours a week and works out at home. “When I skate I feel like I am all by myself; I feel strong and powerful; like I can fly,” L. Rexford said. Rexford hasn’t won any awards in her group since she has moved up to the intermediate level. “It gets tiring seeing the same people place. I think of how they feel when I see them winning. I know if I skate hard I can get to that level,” L. Rexford said. Rexford competed in the 2013 South Atlantic Regional Figure Skating Championship in North Carolina and did not qualify for nationals. She also attended the 2013 National U.S. Figure Skater Components Camp in South Carolina. At this camp Rexford practiced her skating skills. This past April, she got 9th out of 13 in the 27 annual Florida Championship. “The best part about competitions is proving to everyone what I can do,” Rexford said. Rexford is determined to keep improving and advancing in skating. “I want to go to nationals. You have to win regionals and place in sectionals. I hope to make it there in a few years,” Rexford said.

REFLECTION

I have grown so much this year. I have expanded my design and I can tell I am better at Photoshop and InDesign. Looking at my portfolio I am so proud of my work this year. My first year portfolio looking back at it I truly am embarrassed of my work, but I’m glad I have my first portfolio. It shows how much I’ve grown. Specifically looking at my design I can tell I have improved as well as my writing. I can tell I use better structure and word choice. Dealing with the design of my portfolio it has improved so much. My first year was only a flower that I created within 10 minutes. My second year improved a bit involving different colors and cobs of birds. This year, I created my own background with brushes in Photoshop and I drew the graduation cap myself, and used the pen tool to create shapes and edited photos I’ve taken of my favorite places.

Fox Brothers prepare for new album By DELANEE BOGAN Intensity fills the room as the last stanza of a song is sung and the final notes of the track fade away. Soon the next song will begin. Juniors Samuel Capell and Dylan Forehand created the band, the Fox Brothers. They spent weeks in Capell’s room perfecting their EP, “Wake the Wolves,” and are now preparing for an LP for this summer. They published their EP Aug. 9, 2013, which can be downloaded on foxbrothers.bandcamp.com for free, but donations are accepted. They recorded one song up to 700 times. “Recording is the hardest part about being in a band. It’s so much work, with technology and instrument malfunctions. There are points where we get really aggravated,” Forehand said. They have already started mapping out the LP and plan on having 14 songs. The album has a working title of

By LIZZY GORDON Tomorrow a Funeral Mass for 2012 graduate Brooke Dawkins is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Blessed Trinity of Orlando. After mass the family will host a reception at the UCF Fairwinds Alumni Center at 7 p.m. There will be speakers, musical performances and a video tribute, as well as light refreshments. Dawkins, who was a cheerleader, a Legend yearbook editor and the 2011 homecoming queen was hit by a truck at 2:33 a.m., Feb. 23, as she was crossing Alafaya Trail at Gemini Boulevard off campus of University of Central Florida, where she currently attends school. Dawkins died March 5, at 12:01 p.m. from a brain aneurysm, that appears to be unrelated to the accident, and closed skull injuries. At her request, her parents donated her liver, pancreas,

heart, both her kidneys and corneas, which could help seven other people. Those who would like to help the Dawkins family can make a donation to the trust BrookeStrong.org. After all of medical bills are paid, the family plans to establish a 501(c)(3)foundation for charitable uses. “We would like to thank everyone for their generous help and support; especially, her Boone family, friends, the Kappa Delta’s, and everyone who prayed for her. We are still in shock and extremely devastated. She captured all the hearts of those she came into contact with, including her twin...me. “Sleepwalkers,” but that may change as the finalize the LP. “Sleepwalkers means dealing with unrest. We have been debating about using songs that are more personal to us. Sometimes it can feel like we are really only sleepwalking through the days rather than being fully there or fully awake. It’s about the uncertainty of life I guess,” Capell said. The band brings out a soft side in their lyrics relating to the ups and downs of love. “The strangest times” evokes strong emotions for anyone who has ever been through heartbreak, “and you fall in love at the strangest times, up and down can’t make up your mind. Oh, I’d give everything for you to see you’re meant to be with me.” In addition to their soft side, “Wait for me to drown” on the EP evokes a different type of emotion than love. “Cause no one wants to deal with an honest frown everyone just waits to watch him drown” portrays someone feeling as if the world is against oneself. They also tell stories in their songs such as “A northern flood,” which is about a man who lost everything in a flood that destroyed his city. The song “Astronauts” is on the EP and will be featured again on the LP. The lyrics are about both animals and humans breaking free from others who treat them badly on earth. “Forehand and I know what it’s like to be the different ones, so this song means a lot. I don’t think I’ve escaped yet, so the song is kind of an idea of one

day I will escape to a more accepting and open place. It’s probably one of the most embarrassingly personal things I’ve ever co-written,” Capell said. Different instruments such as the guitar, ukulele, and piano help make their music sound folk, similar to Mumford & Sons and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. “The Fox Brothers are fantastic. They really put their heart into everything they do,” junior Megan Williams said. Williams has been friends with the Fox Brothers since middle school. The band has had two performances at Capell’s brother’s house party, and at Capell’s friend John Bandy’s stage he built in his backyard. “When I perform I enter my happy place; it’s a really good way to relax and

release any anger,” Forehand said. Because of school and homework, they are currently focused on creating music, instead of planning gigs. “We want to finish the LP first then after it is finished we will look at our playing options,” Forehand said. They collaborate on lyrics as well as writing music. They use their favorite animal, foxes as an inspiration to their music. Foxes are incorporated in their songs on both the EP and LP. “I use the band as a creative outlet. [It allows me to] express myself as metaphors and my connection with Dylan isn’t like my other friends,” Capell said. The Fox Brothers hope to put their music on iTunes and make more music in the future.

Girls’ unity motivates team By DELANEE BOGAN Despite the score on the screen, the girls’ team is always cheering for one another and keeping positive attitudes. “We’re not that strong of bowlers but we always try our best,” senior Kari Simmons said. Simmons and senior Erin Dudley are the top players on the girls’ team, according to head coach Daniel Tringali. Dudley’s highest score for the season is 183 and Simmons is 143. Both are aiming for higher scores. “The girls have struggled against most teams, some individuals excelled more than others but we are improving by facing tough teams,” Tringali said. During practice, the team works on fundamentals, their approach and release. Tringali stresses the importance of being consistent with their form rather than worrying about their score during practice. The girls’ record for the season is 5-9. On Oct. 15, the team defeated Lake Highland Preparatory, 1750-1678. This was their fifth victory as well as their highest number of pins. In addition to the victory against LHP, they also defeated Oak Ridge 1705-1379. They won by 326 pins, which is their highest margin of the season. After their winning streak against Dr. Phillips on Sept. 26 1699-1670, Olympia on Oct. 9 1665-1602, and LHP, the girls lost to Cypress Creek on Oct. 16. “The girls’ team’s greatest strengths are their togetherness; their unity within the team. Even though record-wise we are having a tough year, they start new games with a positive attitude,” Tringali said. The next game is the FHSAA State Championship, Nov. 6 at Boardwalk Bowl at 8 a.m.

Boys strike out competition By DELANEE BOGAN Starting the season strong with three consecutive wins, the boys team totals high numbers of pins per game. The top players on the team are sophomore Timothy Kaiser and seniors Daniel Cabrera and Paul Perrault. “We all have each other’s back. If someone is struggling we give them advice and if someone is bowling well we cheer for each other,” Kaiser said. Another ways Kaiser and Cabrera contribute to the team is by providing tips on how the ball is reacting to the lane. By sharing the lane’s reactions, they have a general idea of how sharp the ball will curve. This helps them figure out where to stand on the approach and where to aim on the lane. Practicing and encouraging each other as well as providing tips on lane reactions is one of the reasons they are 8-7. On Oct. 9, the boys defeated Olympia at World Bowl, 2498-2402. This is their highest total number of pins. The boys had three consecutive wins similar to the beginning of the season against Lake Nona, Timber Creek and Oak Ridge. They defeated Colonial, 2454-2174; Freedom, 2434-193; and Edgewater, 1903-1781, but lost to Dr. Phillips, 2430-2583 on Sept. 26. The most recent defeat was on Oct. 16 against Winter Park at Aloma Bowl 1843-1865. “The greatest strength for the boys is their consistency and depth, we might not bowl great every time but we never bowl poorly,” Tringali said. Kaiser’s top score of the season is 257, and Cabrera’s top score is 258. Both are aiming to get a 300. The next game is the FHSAA State Championship, Nov. 6 at Boardwalk Bowl at 8 a.m.

A group of educators convened by the National Governor’s Association agreed upon a set of national standards, the Common Core State Standards, in 2010. Since then, implementation across the U.S. has spread quickly, with 45 states adopting either parts of the standards, or the full package. The new standards aim to ensure that all students, regardless of location or wealth, have the skills necessary to compete with students elsewhere in the U.S. and overseas. Students overcome obstacle of living with diabetes By NATALIE dISLA An ordinary day can change in an instant. One day, freshman Gabriel Caban was playing video games at his cousins’ house and began to shake uncontrollably. He eventually realized this was his first diabetic seizure. When he was 6 years old, doctors diagnosed Caban with Type 1 diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis. He was confused, but both of his parents are nurses, which helped the overall process by taking care of him, especially when he was first diagnosed. In total, Caban has had three seizures. He remembers continuously vomiting because of high blood sugar. “I was kind of confused because I was six. I did not really know what was going on,” Caban said. Diabetic ketoacidosis occurs when there is a lack of glucose needed to produce energy. This forms acidic ketones, which is a sign of low insulin. DKA can possibly lead to coma or, at worst, death. However,

By MACKENZIE MOCK As the bell for seventh period rang, Carl Overton sat in his chair patiently listening to the announcement he had been waiting for all day. Dr. Magaret McMillen came on the all-calls declaring the 2014 Teacher of the Year, Carl Overton. The class stood up in excitement and cheered his name. After 39 years of teaching, Overton earned the coveted and prestigious award. “I am really excited for him. I think he deserves the award because he is a really caring and involved teacher,” sophomore Sydney Van Hook said. Starting as an art major at Rowen

University, Overton did not plan on being a teacher. He went to college to get a degree in the arts, but ended up majoring in education. “I was an average student. I enjoyed learning and school and respected my teachers, but I was not a nerd,” Overton said. He started teaching in 1966, at Southern Regional High School in New Jersey. Overton taught there for 20 years and was one of the art department chairs for 10 of those years before he came to Boone. “My first years of teaching were learning years. We had a lot of young teachers, like me, that were going to change the world. We were close to the

[It’s] irresponsible pet owners,” Pitiful Pups cofounder Buffy Dowdell said. According to Dowdell, spaying and neutering one’s pets can act as an easy solution to the increasing euthanasia rate. In 2012, pet owners surrendered 2639 animals to Orange County Animal Services because they could no longer properly care for them, they were sick, or were moving away and could not bring their pets with them. By DELANEE BOGAN Intensity fills the room as the last stanza of a song is sung and the final notes of the track fade away. Soon the next song will begin. Juniors Samuel Capell and Dylan Forehand created the band, the Fox Brothers. They spent weeks in Capell’s room perfecting their EP, “Wake the Wolves,” and are now preparing for an LP for this summer. They published their EP Aug. 9, 2013, which can be downloaded on foxbrothers.bandcamp.com for free, but donations are accepted. They recorded one song up to 700 times. “Recording is the hardest part about being in a band. It’s so much work, with technology and instrument malfunctions. There are points where we get really aggravated,” Forehand said. They have already started mapping out the LP and plan on having 14 songs. The album has a working title of

Moving to another state can be difficult, but one may not be able to picture moving to a completely different country. Adding to the 556,000 people who migrate to the United States each year, five students share their stories about moving from their homeland. Junior Dora Muratovic and Elena Berisha share their stories; fleeing from Kosovo, both Muratovic and Berisha’s family took asylum in the United States. Sophomore Ola Khalaf moved from Saudi Arabia to pursue a better education. Senior Brendan Francis’s parents worked as missionaries for Youth With A Mission and decided seven years ago to come to the United States because they felt it was best for their kids education in an American university. Other times parents obligations to their jobs force their kids to move. Senior Raul Muti is an example of this; he moved from Italy to the United States in 2009.
