Self-analytical evaluation

I started in journalism in a very unusual way. A comment from an assignment in seventh grade put me on this path that I would grow to love so much. It was an assignment to create questions for a character in a book the class was reading and my teacher was impressed by the detail in my questions and asked if I had ever thought about going into journalism. That comment stayed in the back of my mind as I picked my electives for my freshman year of high school. After conducting my first interview something clicked. It was like finding the perfect shoes for an outfit you have had in your closet for months or trying Starbucks for the first time. It is impacting all the things I have learned this year in newspaper. I have improved my designing skills and became much more comfortable using InDesign and Photoshop. During the October issue I learned how to use Illustrator and create very complicated ribbons for the DPS. I learned a lesson how everything I plan out design wise cannot always become reality for the November issue with the mouse time line. I learned how to handle stress and be a team player with the final issue. This course for the past three years has been a valuable course to take. It has showed be to be determined, help others, how to work with a team, strive to do better and be a part of something greater than myself. These are all qualities I will need to use in the real world at a real job.

Refl ection #1 The piece that I consider to be my most significant piece happens to be my favorite piece this year. The theme for the December DPS was conspiracy theories and the moment I heard what the theme would be, a wave of ideas popped into my head. This was the first DPS that I was honestly excited to design and the fun I had designing this DPS made the long hours worthwhile. This DPS was particularly harder than others because I put more of a creative element that the other two double page spreads. The part that took me the longest was making an ocean background with waves. Lindsay was grateful enough to teach me how to do the effect and I think it came out incredible. I think the overall package is appealing to the eye. I feel students found this spread more interesting because of the topics being covered. I learned how to use Adobe Illustrator for the background and how to work with layers in Adobe Photoshop for the alien beam. The part I did not like was that I spent so much time making sure the design was well that I was late and almost held the paper up to go to press. I researched every topic and spent a lot of time searching for photos and cobbing them. I had to draw a ship on Photoshop at the last minute due to a cancelation of a mythical creature in one of the stories. I spent time getting feedback from fellow staffers as I went along to make sure my design was created well.

[It] was another scare tactic. I think we’re more likely to have a zombie apocalypse than the world ending, [but] more in the sense of the bubonic plague,” King said. The theory of the Year 2000 bug was a problem with the coding of computerized systems which people

feared would cause havoc affecting computers all over the world at the beginning of the year 2000. The problem was not only limited to computers, but to any device containing computer chips such as elevators or medical equipment. Moreover, in Scientific American’s article, “NASA Crushes 2012 Mayan Apocalypse Claims,” Don Yeomans, head of the Near-Earth Objects Program Office at NASA/JPL, states that the Mayan calendar shows the ending of a cycle and the beginning of a new one. “There’s [information] to back [2012] theories up. I’ve heard the planets aligning [and the Earth] blowing up. The aspect that it might happen is always a possibility,” Dragon said. However, Yeomans explains that if a planetary alignment happens, there would be no tidal effects on the Earth. Yet with accredited scientists disproving the Mayan calendar myths, Dragon remains skeptical. “Part of me does believe in [2012]. [With Hurricane Sandy, I thought] it was ironic and [shows how] you can’t really prepare for [the end of the world],” Dragon said.

By THOMAS EGAN The myths of unknown creatures, despite the lack of any solid evidence, have entertained and stimulated the imaginations of people for centuries. Bigfoot, werewolves, the Loch Ness Monster and El Chupacabra are legendary creatures that have transcended pop culture and folklore. These legends have attracted a massive following all across the world and have inspired TV shows, such as MonsterQuest, books and even a pseudoscience known as cryptozoology, the study of “hidden” animals and supernatural beings. Stemming from recent sightings and discoveries, these “monsters” can be considered modern myths, but others have longer histories dating back centuries ago to ancient mythology, like the Yeti of the Himalayan mountains. This purported beast, also known as

the Abominable Snowman, is rumored to stalk the high peaks of Nepal and Tibet and described as an ape-like, hairy creature that is taller than the average human male and walks on two feet. The Buddhist indigenous people told stories of a “Glacier Beast,” who they saw as the God of the Hunt. The Loch Ness Monster, also called Nessie, became famous after Dr. Kenneth Wilson snapped the famed “Surgeon’s Photograph,” a blurry image of a dark figure, which he said was the Loch Ness Monster, protruding out of the water, in 1934. The famous photograph of the Loch Ness Monster was revealed to be a hoax in 1975 by the Daily Telegraph. Dr. Wilson staged the photo with a small submarine. Most Bigfoot sightings have been revealed to be nothing more than men in hairy suits. Despite the abundance of contradictory evidence, these legendary creatures will always hold a place in people’s imagination because of their mysterious attraction and the possibility of their existence.

The chaos that ensued on Earth in 2012, not only enhances “end of the world” beliefs, but for freshman Hailey Dragon, the world coming to an end is more than a possibility. “I don’t believe it’s going to happen, but a part of me does. On July 8, 1947, in Roswell, New Mexico, an unidentified flying object supposedly crashed. The incident was the spark of “UFO fever” in the United States. In Roswell, New Mexico, on July 1, 1976, another UFO sighting occurred. A man claimed to be walking home from a friend’s house at night when an egg-shaped object flew above him. Area 51 and Roswell are theorized to be two storage sites for crashed UFOs. Area 51 is under extreme surveillance and is classified “top secret” by the United States government. There is not proof that extraterrestrials exist or that Area 51 and Roswell have connections to aliens, but conspiracy theorists support the ideas that alien spaceships crashed in those two areas. “I believe there are many strange things in the universe. It is so big; we cannot be the only things [out there],”

Because of such heavy surveillance around Roswell, New Mexico and Area 51, conspiracy theorists believe the government is hiding secrets. According to Colonel Alexander’s book, UFOs: Myths, Conspiracies and Realities, he thinks it is logical that if extraterrestrial life does exist, Area 51 would be involved.

airplanes have vanished in the Triangle. Opposed to aircrafts, ships have to factor in a strong ocean current known as the Gulf Stream. History.com’s Frequently Asked Questions, states this current can erase proof of accidents. Coast Guard History FAQ states they do not recognize the Triangle as a geographic area of specific danger because they believe the Triangle is harmless to ships or planes. “[Existence of the Triangle,] is something to believe in and people crave that, whether it’s a good thing or bad thing,” Hill said. The facts behind the Bermuda Triangle mystery have yet to be uncovered.

The thought of this dates back to the late 1700’s when the local citizens referred it to as a Bavarian Illuminati; the German philosopher Adam Weishaupt first originated the conspiracy. The modern day conspiracy theory is that a majority of the world events that happen are being controlled and manipulated by a secret society calling itself the Illuminati. Conspiracy

theorists claim that many notable people are members of the Illuminati such as Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lady Gaga One of the key accomplices in the Illuminati conspiracy theory is Myron Fagan, a famous American writer, producer and director. He devoted his later years to finding evidence that a variety of historical events like the Battle of Waterloo, The French Revolution and the JFK assassination by infiltrating the Hollywood film industry, in which he found that they were all orchestrated by the Illuminati. There are many pieces of evidence that help the case for one to accept the Illuminati’s beliefs and prove what they

It is believed that the famous hip-hop rapper Jay-Z is part of the Illuminati because of his descriptions in songs such as Most Kingz he refers to the Illuminati and says that they were associated with the death of Michael Jackson, Tupac and Biggie Smalls. When asked what his association with the Illuminati was, he just laughed.

Also known by its nickname “Devil’s Triangle,” it is located off the southeastern Atlantic coast of the United States. The piece that I feel could still use work is the November DPS. This DPS taught me a very important lesson that helped me become a better designer. The work did not evolve as much as other spreads because I had a very distinct vision from the very beginning. The part that frustrated me was that I had this very cool idea for the time line of the spread but it did not turn out how I wanted it to. If I did not know how to do something that I had envisioned I would research it. This situation was different, I researched and tried multiple ways to make this time line wrap around the headline but I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it. Everything I tried failed and it made me angry knowing that something did not come out because I just failed. I learned not to let things bother you if they do not go your way. If I had the chance to change it I would use Illustrator to create the curvy mouse cord because I am more comfortable with it now. I look at it now and I think it still looks good without the cord wrapping into the headline. Overall the only thing that really evolved was the change of the cord for the time line to a simple arrow.

By GABRIELLA FAKHOURY For three years, TapToTalk has been giving children and adults a voice. Creating an electronic voice, TapToTalk allows a person who cannot talk to have a voice of his own. This app is specifically designed for kids and adults with autism, down syndrome, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), or traumatic brain damage, giving one a easier way to communicate with others. “TapToTalk is good because it allows one of my students to interact with others and communicate, where as if he did not use the app, he wouldn’t interact with others,” Denise Scott, Exceptional Student Education Teacher, said.

Tap ToTalk uses pictures to guide users to the correct words. If needed users can change the picture to one preferred. To project the words from a device, the user taps on a picture of the word he wants projected picking the different words from the specific category one wants to talk about. TapToTalk helps Scott’s student with everything from asking for something to eat to having a full on conversation with another person. Without TapToTalk he would not have any way to communicate with someone. It needs Internet or WiFi to work.

By LIA VILLAR Since 2007, about 35,000 teenagers died in car crashes. This is 6,000 per year, which means 18 teenagers die per day in car crashes. Texting and driving is one of the leading causes in death of teenagers. Junior Steven Thetford knows first hand how texting and driving can affect one’s outlook on life. “My cousin died [in a car accident caused by a driver texting]. It was sad because he was young and it was a stupid way to die,” Thetford said. According to dosomething.org article “11 Facts About Teen Driving,” a teenager is four times more likely to die when the driver is texting.

Not only has manufactures improved the look of the car but how efficiently they are. There are now many more hybrid cars, running on mostly electricity. This technological advance has helped not only with saving gas money but also the environment. GPS’s have been saving people time and gas money. Directing one to a destination and updating roads and routes itself is helpful; all smartphones have GPS’s built into their maps.

Websites and apps allow one to shop and pay bills online quickly and efficiently. Postal mail is becoming outdated because of how quickly and simple online websites are. For those who do not like to go shopping they have the ease and comfort of online shopping. Billing online is also a way of going green because of all the paper saved. There are also apps like Pageonce that keep on track of one’s bills and pay them.

Students can now easily use a search engine and find all the information they need to complete homework, essays and projects. For at-home activities, eHow.com is a tool to use one’s creativity and create things from Halloween costumes to recipes.

Progressbook is a tool for students to check and keep track of their grades. This is also a tool for teachers to keep their students grades in order and leave notes for parents. Edmodo is an online tool and app that allows teachers to upload statuses and share grades and homework with the students who have accounts. Teachers also use Turnitin.com to check for plagiarism.

With the accessibility of Facebook, Skype and Twitter, one has the ability to connect with people all over the world without having to spend money on long distant calls or waiting on snail mail. Skype also helps military families and those in long distance relationships.

According to CBS News article “Do You Have ADHD Or Are You Just Easily Distracted?” published on May 10, 2011, studies have shown that one out of 10 children with ADHD is addicted to the Internet. This is because the Internet does not require much attention and when playing games online, those points which appeals to the user who has ADHD since most have altered dopamine reward systems.

Internet access in 1994 was available in 35 percent of U.S. public schools compared to nearly 100 percent of public schools today, according to a Harris Interactive report from May 2009. The progress of technology is shown by the world’s most popular social networking site reaching a record breaking milestone. As of Oct. 4, 2012, over a seventh of the world’s population is actively using Facebook. This burst of technology comes with positive and negative effects. Its effects on the younger generations span poor social skills from continuous virtual activity to advanced programs that aid Down Syndrome teenagers to communicate more effectively. Technology has had the biggest impact on children under the age of 13 rather than any other age group. It has affected this particular age group mostly because they were born into this technologically advanced age rather than having to adjust to it.

I feel that I was a big asset to this staff. I was an editor that went above and beyond to make sure my job was done correctly. Unfortunately the amount of time it would take me to design and make sure my designs were up to Hi-Lights standards cause me to be behind numerous times. If I would see a fellow staffer behind I would offer my assistance even if I was behind myself. Staying after when any extra assistance was needed for the May issue and the March issue show how much being a part of Hi-Lights means to me. Cobbing photos for Connor, answering design questions on a daily basis and doing fellow staffersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; edits for the December issue are just a few examples to how I have been an asset to the Hi-Lights staff.

The biggest hardship by far was the final issue of the paper. The last issue every year has the nickname of â&#x20AC;&#x153;the issue from hellâ&#x20AC;? but this year that nickname reached a whole new level. The senior section and year in review was almost canceled and I contributed to this massive anger set towards the newspaper. My perfectionist attitude for my superlatives page got me so ridiculously behind that I was embarrassed and angry at myself. I spent over 15 minutes cobbing each couple, with 20 couples the workload added up. I did not want help from anyone because if someone else would cob my photos I would just redo them because I felt that these students deserved me going that extra mile to make sure it was just right. There was a moment that I felt I let my staff and Mrs. Burke down and that was a new low for me in all my three years on HiLights. I did everything I could after I let it get out of hand to go out of my way to stay after school to help make sure the paper went to press. I learned to not dwell on the mistakes you make but to use that energy to do something positive. If that problem arose again I would ask for help. I would not be so nit picky and let people help me be on deadline. Overall I feel like I handle the situation as best as I could. I made a mistake, I confronted it and I did the best I could to make up for it.

My three goals I put in the semester exam were to stop procrastinating, not take so long to create the DPS and to design better headlines. I feel like I stopped procrastinating by searching for photos very early and asking for opinions for my design during the creative process. I feel like I slightly achieved my second goal. My May DPS was not as behind as usual because I started right after the March issue was over and did not kill myself over the small details. My superlatives double page spread was a different story. I spent so much time on it to make it a quality spread which is the reason why my first few double page spreads were behind. I feel like I achieved my third goal in the March DPS. I created this cool headline by watching tutorials and getting inspired by work around me. This headline was appealing to the eye and went along with the theme of the spread.

Swing states decide election By AUSTIN HALL With 29 electoral votes, Florida has one fourth of the 115 swing state votes, enough to make or break a candidate. Former Governor Mitt Romney has 150 guaranteed electoral votes with 41 leaning votes, coming out to a total of 191 electoral votes. President Obama has 150 electoral votes with 69 leaning votes coming out to 232 electoral votes. A candidate needs 270 votes to win the election. The swing states consist of bigger states like Wisconsin (10 votes), Ohio (18 votes), Virginia (13 votes) and North Carolina (15 votes). “[Obama and Romney] just need to keep coming back. Florida has one of the highest electoral votes, with 29, and is pretty evenly split between democrats and republicans,” senior Nicholas DeAngelis said. In the 2012 election, Obama has spent 19 days in Florida. Romney has spent 22 days here. If Obama wins Florida and keeps his 69 leaning votes, that puts him at 261

Dipping hurts student’s health By JACKSON CRUMBLY Use of tobacco is prominent in the United States today, such as cigarettes, cigars and smokeless tobacco. Smokeless tobacco, commonly referred to as “dip,” has been around ever since tobacco was harvested. Dip is extremely common among athletes, particularly in baseball, because one can do it while playing or practicing the sport, unlike smoking tobacco. This sort of tobacco has also found its way to students, both during and after school hours. One can purchase dip, like smoking tobacco, at the age of 18, but that does not always mean minors cannot get their hands on it. Junior John Doe, age 17, dips five times a day, at school and spends nearly $40 a week on smokeless tobacco. Doe started dipping when he was 12 years old. “I was fishing with my buddies and dipping sounded like a fantastic idea,” Doe said. Doe’s brands of choice are Long Cut ($3.29 a can) and Grizzly ($3.75 a can). Doe believes dipping relieves headaches more effectively than Aspirin and relaxes him when he is stressed. Currently, Doe does not plan on

quitting. In 13 states, including Florida, if a minor is caught using tobacco he must attend educational awareness classes on tobacco use. In addition he will be fined up to $250 and the user’s driver’s license may be suspended. Also, the parents of the underage user can be convicted of a violation and forced to attend these classes with the user. Peter Post, baseball coach and algebra teacher, doesn’t let students or players dip at all and is against anyone, young or old, using tobacco. If he catches a player he makes the player sit out a week of practices and games. “I think dipping is bad period. I think a lot of the guys see the professional players doing it,” Post said. Major League Baseball has banned players from carrying tobacco cans on them during games and using during interviews but has not banned players using it during play. Dip contains nicotine, like cigarettes, which is an addictive drug that makes one crave it. Among nicotine, dip contains 28 other carcinogens including: cadmium used in car batteries; lead; n-nitrosamines; polonium 210, a type of nuclear waste; hydrazine; benzopyrene; uranium 235; used in

nuclear weapons and fiberglass. Studies show, due to its higher levels of nicotine, dip is harder to quit than cigarettes. Once one has become addicted to dip it is extremely difficult to stop, and can induce one with withdrawals. If one is a constant user before the age of 18, there is an 80 percent chance he will use it for the rest of his life. Along with cancer of the pancreas and mouth, dip also increases risk of gum disease and heart disease from higher blood pressure. Dip also reduces an athlete’s ability to perform because it causes slower reaction time. Dipping can be harmful or even fatal to the user’s health and starting earlier only increases one’s risks. Both smoking and smokeless tobacco present unhealthy risks for one’s future and could affect one’s future.

It is so impacting how much I have grown throughout the past years in my portfolios. My first year I barely knew how to design and I altered a simple image for my theme. My second year I showed improvement by using a threshold for my design. This year I feel like I really stepped up my game and showed how much my designing has matured. By CONOR CURRY Effort. According to some of Bill Daniel’s past students, effort is how one succeeds in his class. However, unlike as in some difficult classes, Daniel’s students do not resent the workload or the teacher. “[As a teacher] he really brings out the best of you as a student. He helped me mature as a person and in my studies. I believe he’s a great person and teacher,” sophomore Rachel Goldenberg said. “[He] definitely [deserves this award], above any other teacher I’ve ever had. He really puts learning as his priority.” After being chosen as the school’s teacher of the year, Daniel learned he was one of five county finalists out of 199 high, middle and elementary school teachers. Some of Daniel’s responsibilities include coaching football’s defensive backs, overseeing the Academy of Finance’s magnet program, teaching four different courses, acting as a site supervisor for the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and managing the Central Florida Educators Federal Credit Union campus branch. In the IRS VITA program, Daniel trains and supervises the student volunteers, serves as a liaison for the school with the IRS and oversees all E-file functions within the site to process each client’s return. According to Daniel, nothing he does as a teacher sets him apart from others in the county. He is often heard stating that he is not even the

Smoking habits are prevalent on campus By ANNA MARIE BORIA Today, almost half a dozen different types of smoking are intertwined into the lives of almost 40 percent of the high school population, according to drugabuse.gov. Smoking is slowly evolving in different forms as the generations change. In 1970, the most popular type of smoking was cigarettes. Cigarettes and chewing tobacco are still high on the list of the most popular types of smoking, but new forms like hookah are being done by people on campus. The false knowledge of the new forms being less harmful than other types of smoking is why the new forms are rising in popularity. Smoking is proven to affect

performance in all types of fields of work including sports. Types of smoking including chewing tobacco are controversial within baseball teams because it negatively affects an athlete’s performance. It is seen in other sports such as golf, but is not as popular. The most trendy type of smoking among high school students is not legal in the United States. According to drugabbuse.gov, 36.5 percent of high school seniors smoke or have previously smoked marijuana in the last month. Young people are showing a decreased perception that this drug is harmful to them due to the rise of use of marijuana. on YouTube and taught herself different makeup styles and ideas. Castillo and her childhood friend, sophomore Karissa Ramos, decided to make their own YouTube channel for fashion and makeup tips in December 2011. Their YouTube channel has 194 subscribers and 10,510 video views. Ramos is often used as the guinea pig for new makeup ideas. She gives feedback to Castillo and gives tips as to how she can improve. “It does not bother me [being the guinea pig]. I think it is cool being the first one to see it,” Ramos said. Castillo started to experiment with makeup in eighth grade. “I like the colors a lot. I know [the makeup] is not what defines you. It is just really fun,” Castillo said. Castillo started her own business of doing girls’ hair and makeup for special occasions such as prom.. Prices range from $5-$10. Her first customer was Ramos’s mom in June 2011. Castillo received a $5 tip, beginning her Stay

Classy Makeup business. “I like peoples’ reactions when I finish their makeup. I like making other people happy,” Castillo said. To spread the word about the business, Ramos helped hand out business cards. Both of their mothers help by telling their friends about Castillo. Castillo also has a page on Facebook advertising her business. “I think that it is awesome that she found something she really enjoys and she could definitely make a career out of it,” Ramos said. Castillo wants the cosmetology business as a side job. She is currently attending John Casablancas Modeling & Career Center where she is learning about etiquette and modeling techniques. Casablancas also offers business classes and teaches participants about how to get a job. When the final bell rings for school to end and kids go to their various after school activities, Castillo is preparing herself for her future.

By BRIDGETTE NORRIS With a sense of creativity and a knack for entrepreneurship, senior Elisa Castillo spends her spare time hosting photo shoots and making and selling jewelry. “I am an artsy person and enjoy making jewelry. I got involved in photography by just seeing really good pictures and thinking, ‘I want to take pictures like that’,” Castillo said. Using the Internet as her resource, Castillo learned photography tips, how to operate the camera and jewelry making skills. “I got bored and thought [homemade jewelry] looked cool and wanted to try it,” Castillo said. Her jewelry costs $5 for earrings, $7 for rings and key chains and $10 for necklaces and bracelets. Some prices do vary depending on how time consuming and difficult it is to make. “I usually do requests for jewelry. People tell me what they want and I go off that, whether it be the theme or style of jewelry,” Castillo said. Prior to the jewelry making, Castillo began her photography hobby with a small digital camera before upgrading to a Nikon d5000. The camera upgrade comes in handy during Castillo’s photo shoots, like the one with senior Shaffaq Noor. “We were laughing through the whole photo shoot, just joking around and having fun. I didn’t think the pictures would come out as good as they did,” Noor said. Castillo books photo shoots with friends and her friend’s families. She charges for them depending on how long it takes and uploads the pictures on Facebook, www.facebook.com/elisacastillophotography, afterwards. Although right now Castillo’s photography and jewelry are ways to pass time, her dream is to be a professional photographer, but thinks it is not very practical. “I don’t want to rely on waiting to see if I get lucky. It is more important to Campbell for her son to do better in his academics than his athletics. She wants him to do well in school so he will have opportunities that she did not. Due to his love for sports, Bergan keeps his grades up so he is able to play. He plans to continue to play basketball and football throughout high school so he can become a starter for junior varsity and varsity. Although Bergan likes to play basketball, he would prefer to play football in college because he thinks it is more exciting. He plans to achieve his goal of playing a sport in college by playing in high school. He plans to focus on the basics while remaining dedicated and practicing so he can become a better athlete.

By TOMMY MCDONALD After getting home from water polo practice and studying for his five AP classes, junior Israel Miller still has not started practicing for Quiz Bowl. Luckily for Miller, his academic schedule prepares him for the upcoming Florida All County Quiz Bowl Tournament in April. “It would be like studying for the SAT, you can’t really do it. All I do is go in to have fun and show off my stuff,” Miller said. Quiz Bowl is similar to Jeopardy, but with teams. Questions range from science, history, math, English, fine arts and the foreign languages of Spanish and French. Quiz Bowl sponsor Christina Baybay Bykov selected Miller to try out for the All County team in November after the school season concluded. “I was pretty surprised [to make it to the All County Team]. I almost feel like I don’t deserve it, [because] I beat a bunch of seniors that I thought would do better than me,” Miller said. He will now train with the All County team at Winter

Park and West Orange high schools until the state meet in April. Miller suspects that the team will study old released questions from past Quiz Bowl tournaments. The schools third place finish in the Quiz Bowl playoffs displayed Miller’s skill. Even though Miller is a top player, he does not spend any time on his own preparing for the event. “He’s quick. He has good recall. He’s not a timid player, and that’s very good. You can’t doubt yourself. You have to take risks,” Baybay Bykov said Miller and the rest of the Orange County Quiz Bowl team will compete at Disney for four days against other county Quiz Bowl teams. Miller is the only student advancing from Boone’s Quiz Bowl team, an opportunity only six students in Orange

County receive. “It’s not about Boone. I want Orange County to take the State Championship,” Baybay Bykov said.

By DELANEE BOGAN Hearing a loud beeping noise, he slowly hits his alarm clock, turning it off, still exhausted from the night before. Staying out late playing basketball and waking up early for his club basketball team practice is not unusual for freshman Alexis Bergan and his busy schedule. “[The best part of being on the freshman team] is that I get to represent Boone and play basketball with my friends. Basketball is a way to get your anger out and a good way to make new friends,” Bergan said. Bergan is the starting shooting guard on the freshman team and was the starting wide receiver on the freshman football team. Practicing basketball for 10 hours a week is helping him improve his skills as well as prepare for next year, “[Through basketball I’ve learned] to be a good leader and my communication skills have improved,” Bergan said. As well as being on the freshman team, Bergan is on the Florida Basketball Volleyball Association Club Team. He joined the FBVA club team in December 2012, but started playing basketball in eighth grade. “I think it’s a good opportunity for him to improve himself in basketball and work with others on the team,” mother, Rachel Campell said. Smith shows that teachers do things other than teach; in this case, biking to school. It gives her additional exercise and saves her money on gas. Currently, she spends an average of $35 or less on gas monthly and reduces wear on her car. “It sets a great example for my students because we are such a car obsessed society, and it’s totally possible to exist without using a car on a daily basis,” Smith said. but long term, when I think about the things that could happen, I kind of worry,” senior Laya Al-khalil said. Al-khalil has been smoking hookah since she was 14 years old. Originally from a small village in Lebanon, Al-khalil’s family smoked hookah as a cultural tradition, rather than as a social activity. On the flip side, senior Jane Doe started smoking hookah over the past winter break, after her friends introduced her to it. “[I smoke] for fun,” Doe said. “It’s fun do to tricks with the smoke. It passes time and doesn’t get boring.” What is generally lesser known is that hookah can also be addictive. Since users inhale more total nicotine, the addictive agent in tobacco, from hookah sessions, smokers can get addicted faster and more severely than cigarette smokers. “[I’m addicted] because it comes up a lot in my life, and I use it as an escape.

I really want to smoke right now,” Doe said. “It calms you down, and it separates you from everything else. ” While the current laws regarding smoking hookah mirror those regarding cigarettes, which require one to be 18 years old to smoke, hookah is often easier to get a hold of than cigarettes. One only needs to buy one hookah, which can then be used by many, only having to replace the tobacco, rather than buy the whole package repeatedly. “It’s relaxing, but it’s a social thing, it opens up conversations and you meet new people,” Alkhalil said. Because of the idea of hookah being less harmful, it is taking more of a hold in the teenage community. Hookahs are relatively inexpensive and are seen as a social activity, rather than an equally, if not more, addictive alternative to cigarettes. There are currently 26 hookah bars in Orlando, the majority of which charge $10 to use their hookahs.

Whether it is viewed as a positive trait to smoke it, or a negative one, it changes student’s perceptions of each other. “I lost all of my friends because I was doing it. I didn’t care what people [thought] of me because I was happy,” Jane Doe said. Marijuana is linked to causing cancer and having no effect, so its exact effects are unknown and likely different for each individual. Some users understand that what they are doing is bad for them, but that fact does not stop them. “It will affect me later in life. Smoking anything is really bad for you, but it won’t affect me ‘til later,” senior Joe Smith said. John Doe has little concern for smoking marijuana and actually is certain it will not effect him at all. Although health effects are not certain, legal consequences will affect students for the their entire life.

By JACKSON CRUMBLY Use of tobacco is prominent in the United States today, such as cigarettes, cigars and smokeless tobacco. Smokeless tobacco, commonly referred to as “dip,” has been around ever since tobacco was harvested. Dip is extremely common among athletes, particularly in baseball, because one can do it while playing or practicing the sport, unlike smoking tobacco. This sort of tobacco has also found its way to students, both during and after school hours. One can purchase dip, like smoking tobacco, at the age of 18, but that does not always mean minors cannot get their hands on it. Junior John Doe, age 17, dips five times a day, at school and spends nearly $40 a week on smokeless tobacco. Doe started dipping when he was 12 years old. “I was fishing with my buddies and dipping sounded like a fantastic idea,” Doe said. Doe’s brands of choice are Long Cut ($3.29 a can) and Grizzly ($3.75 a can). Doe believes dipping relieves headaches more effectively than Aspirin and relaxes him when he is stressed. Currently, Doe does not plan on

Marijuana for all the negative connotations associated with it, hasn’t been fully negative according to John Doe, but that is not to say its benefits outweigh its negatives. “It relieves a lot of stress. When I’m really pissed off I have to smoke or I’ll punch something. I’ve gotten involved in a lot of hard drugs, coke, molly and it’s mainly because you buy pot from drug dealers who are involved in other drugs,” John Doe said. Similar in name, but different in practice, synthetic marijuana, also known as spice or K2, is more harmful to its users than smoking weed. Synthetic weed can be found at some gas stations under a variety of names, even though Congress outlawed it’s sale in 2012. It

Although, it’s usually referred to as marijuana, mary jane, pot, weed, or a variety of other names, these casual names do not detract from how serious using the illegal substance can be. “I know a lot of people who have been charged with the possession of marijuana and others who have been charged with distribution, and [they] are ruined,” freshman John Doe said. Marijuana is the number one used illicit drug in the United States, but it is not necessarily the most harmful. Over 800,000 Americans are arrested each year for marijuana possession or another marijuana-related crime according to drugpolicy.org in “10 Facts About Marijuana.” Possessing marijuana can result in up to 10 years in prison. “I’ve seen too many go to jail as a result of making the stupid choice to use, sell or possess marijuana at school,” Student Resource Officer Kenneth Pinkston said. If one is caught with 20 grams or less of marijuana, the maximum sentence is one year and $1,000 fine. If one is caught with more than 20 grams, it is a felony and the penalties are equivalent to owning 25 or less marijuana plants. That includes a maximum of five years in prison and a maximum $5,000 fine. Selling 20 grams or less contains the same legal consequences as possession of the same amount. By ANNA MARIE BORIA From those who are most likely to appear on a reality show to the students picked to be the epitome of what Boone High School is about, the Senior Class presented 20 different superlatives at prom on April 20. The Class of 2013 voted on the superlatives from March 11-15. “I think [giving out superlatives] is a cute thing for the students to do. For someone who is shy, they can get recognized. It’s a nice honor, and it’s not something negative,” Senior Class sponsor Sarah Kittrell said. There are eight new awards: Most Likely to Win an Oscar, Most Mature, Best Sense of Style, Most Likely to Appear on a Reality Show, Most Likely to Become a Millionaire, Most Likely to Become President, Heart of Gold and Biggest Dreamer. The biggest awards of the night are Mr. and Ms. BHS. Seniors Dillon Knox and Merrie Harding walked away with this title. Harding’s older brother and sister were Mr. and Ms. BHS in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
