{ Self Analysis I got started in journalism when my teachers told me that I was a good writer and said that I should take journalism when i was applying for the Finance Magnet. I realized that writing an English Essay is a lot different than covering a news event or even writing body copy in the Yearbook. Yes, I realize that both an English essay and Body Copy in a Yearbook expect you tell a story but I had no idea about all of the grammatical errors that I have been making for years.
When I entered journalism I learned quickly that spelling a major part of the story and makes you look very professional, also learned the difference between editorializing and facts/bias commentary, and finally that passive voice drive Ms. Burke up the wall. When I was accepted onto staff, I expected it to be sort of like Journalism 1, easy deadlines; all you have to do is get pictures, quote people and then place everything on page. I had a rude awakening on my first deadline, the page are a lot more complex then I had expected. Not only did you have to find people who have not been pictured and are not hit listed to be pictured. You have to come up with witty question and pray that the interviewees have a sense of humor and a good quote give you. I felt like such an idiot when i didn’t realize that quotes on a quote page count as captions for your page. Also you have to get pictures of them outside with the sun in their face, trying to make them laugh but also remembering that it can’t be profile. Lets just say my first deadline, I didn’t make by a landslide. The only thing I can say is that you have to stick with it and practice, deadline 3 it had become a routine in creating a spread. Not going to lie I was a little distorted but I am not someone who quits so I stuck it through and was able to contribute to the production of a great book along with an amazing staff. Through various events like Pumpkin carving, Christmas party, New York trip, and workdays, I think the staff as a whole created strong bonds which in the end helped us get through tough deadlines due to the help and support of our fellow staff members and editors. I was a little shy and scared to ask anyone for help but once i realized that we all had a common goal to meet deadline that you can always go to your editors and Ms. Burke for anything. I was surprise when i saw the amount of dedication the publication has to producing something that is high in journalism standards. I haven’t been so invested in something in a long time but i feel an obligation and pride in my work since it is going into something that people keep for years and look back on constantly that i felt if i didn’t do the page like the staff wanted and then it was going to decrease the appeal of the book.
}
I am asset to the staff because I finished all of my pages not too far off of deadline. I only made deadline three time out of the 6 pages I was given. I also sold a page and half of ads to benefit the book. I also did “publicity” for the yearbook in my classes telling my friends and reminding them to buy the book or get the newspaper. Also while I was panhandling, so many people walking out of Publix asked me about the publication and how the yearbook is looking this year and it feels great knowing that I represent an amazing yearbook that so many people love and look forward to every year.
{ Reflection 1
I feel that my most significant piece of work was the pink page. It was my partner, Drew Porterfield, and I deadline 2. The page started off kind of rocky since we had just lost our student life editor and didn’t really have a layout until well into the deadline. We really didn’t have any pictures in the beginning, since the whole page was about Breast Cancer awareness events that happen on campus. We had to get pictures of football players wearing pink socks and gear, cheerleaders in pink jerseys, a student who works at Tijuana Flats who serves pink tacos on taco Tuesday, the softball scrimmage where the players wore pink socks and jerseys, Ms. Burke went to a Breast Cancer Walk where one of our teachers who is a breast cancer attended, and a couple breast cancer tattoos that students have. I honestly wasn’t expecting what Ms. Burke had designed for the page. At first all of the picture were black and white with the pink showing through and the body copy text wrapped around a cheerleading cone that was decorated for breast cancer.
}
The Editors had decided that by making all of the pictures black and white took away from the uniqueness of the page. We did leave a few pictures black and white. Also the headline, subhead, and leads in captions were made different shades of pink and gray. I learned that you should get your pictures picked out first and figure out who you are interviewing and also research your topic and gather facts. It makes it easier for editors to design or redesign spreads and makes it easier to write body copy and captions if you understand your topic. Also not everything is set in stone when deadline, editors may make some changes when the proofs come in.

{ Reflection 2 Y15 Sport Action Photo: I think that this photo shows great action. Also is demonstrated the rule of thirds and also depth of field.
REACH OUT > Senior Rene Fiorelli receives a ball from sophomore Emily Colvin. “The season is going well. Yeah, we might have lost a few games here and there, but we aren’t going to let them define us. We used those games as a learning skill to see what we need to get better,” Fiorelli said.
Y18 Feature photo: I think that this photo captures human emotion the best and shows holiday spirit which was the angle of the page.
LAUGHING ALL THE WAY. At the FCA Christmas huddle gingerbread housemaking contest, sophomore Kristin Recker laughs with friends. “A memorable moment this Christmas was at the FCA party when the gingerbread competition turned into an intense frosting fight,” Recker said.
Y9 Caption Writing: I think that these spreads captions show insight into the photo and also gives you information about the event. The majority of the captions present a catchy lead in, a present tense sentence that describes what is going on in the photo and also tells you something that you can’t tell by the photo.

This is my favorite photo because it shows great action. I was able to catch him sliding into home while still being able to capture his face. My favorite part is the clay in the air.
}
{
I think that this photo shows good rule of thirds along with depth of field. This is the first photo that I thought I achieved a creative angle. I ended up lying in the grass to take the photo.

{
This photo has an creative angle and didn’t seem like a boring desk photo. It was used on the publication spread since it was taken during a workday.
