After attending TCS for 11 years, it is a place that is close to my heart and I want to give back to the school for all that it taught me. In my neighborhood, there are seven families that I babysit on a regular basis. I babysit because I love children and the joy that surrounds them. I have experience in cooking meals, helping with homework, playing all sorts of games and putting children to bed. I am dependable and responsible. I believe that these qualities would help me fit your job description. Self Evaluation
When registering for my classes for my sophomore year, included in my schedule was one Advanced Placement, three honors and two elective classes, but I had one elective class to fill. So I gave Journalism I a shot because I had heard great things about Mrs. Burke and that the class taught useful writing skills. I entered the class as just a student, but I left the class as a yearbook staffer. Throughout my first year on the Legend yearbook staff, I have learned how to meet a deadline, how to take quality photos and how to properly write body copy and captions. I think that my writing has improved significantly. I have grown to be able to add detail to my stories rather than just the facts. Toward the end of the year, I noticed that I was given less edits for my writing than I had been at the beginning of the year. The first deadline came as a surprise to me; I was not expecting for everything to move so quickly. I think i finally got the hang of how to get interviews done, pictures placed, and stories and captions written in an efficient amount of time by the fourth deadline. I learned how to utilize my time better and how to think fast, in order to make deadlines. This skill has carried over into my other classes and has helped me improve my grades. In deadlines one, two, five and seven I learned how to work with a partner on a page. I found that having a partner was very helpful and made it go a lot smoother. I think that the deadlines that I had a partner for ended up being better than the ones when I worked alone. Learning the rules of grammar for journalism helped me improve my writing in AP Language and Composition, as well. After using the rules for journalism, I caught myself correcting others’ writing based on our copy style rules. I can use these skills in the future to apply for colleges and they could help when I get a job. I was an asset to this staff throughout the course of the year because I completed all of my responsibilities as there were supposed to be finished. I worked my hardest in all of my deadlines even when I felt stressed and anxious. I think that overcoming the first couple of deadlines greatly improved my work ethic and my view of how to get things done in a timely manner. By completing tasks and contributing to stories, photos and captions I feel that I did my part as a staffer.
Reflection One
I think my most improved piece of work this year was the foreign language page in the third deadline. This was the first page I had to create on my own. Not only did my story angle completely change, but so did the layout. I felt that the page started off as a little “shaky�, but by the end it came out very strong. The purpose of this spread was to inform the reader about the different foreign language clubs on campus and the events that they are involved in. I found this deadline to be the most challenging one for me all year because I began the story from the wrong angle and had to start from the beginning to correct my mistake. Although this was difficult, I learned to double check my work the first time I turned it in. After many edits, the story on this page transformed to a completely new angle and in the end, it was much more interesting and paid more attention to detail. Although finding the best pictures took a while, the end result of the dominant photo was worth the wait. Due to the dominant photo change, we also had to change the layout which greatly improved the spread. My favorite part about the final product is the dominant photo because of its display of emotion and the unique angle. Overall, I enjoyed creating this page because I believe that I learned a lot and it made me a better staffer because I gained more experience.
