CAREY ILGENFRITZ 3753 Gatlin Place Orlando, FL 32812 carey.ilgenfritz22@gmail.com (407) 615-9335 May 16, 2011 Renee’ Burke Yearbook adviser 2000 S. Mills Ave. Orlando, Florida 32812 Dear Mrs. Burke: Perhaps the Legend yearbook is seeing to recruit the talent of someone who can grasps concepts, work independently and contribute to the success of a publication. If this is the case, then please accept the accompanying resume’ for your review and consideration for the position of Editor in Chief for the 2011-2012 school year. As a section editor at the moment, I’ve learned to write and edit effective stories, interview a variety of students on a deadline, and take publishable pictures for the publication. I have reviewed and edited numerous stories written by staffers that are going in my section. I was also a leader to them by helping them take pictures by going to events with them as moral support. With a background in writing and photography, I am able to view the publication from multiple perspectives with a proven ability to maximize readers’ interest. As a quick learner, I can pick up new tasks and do them in an efficient manner. As Editor in Chief the organization skills would give me a chance to develop useful skills that will help in pursuing my long-term career goals. Although the accompanying resume’ illustrates my background well, I feel a more personal interview would better demonstrate my knowledge and abilities. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you at a convenient time. Thank you for your review and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully yours, Carey Ilgenfritz Enclosed: Resume’

personal essay

My love for journalism grows each year I’m involved in it. Ever since I was little, I have seen magazines wondering what the company went through to put it all together and wanted to be apart of that process when I got older. I got started when I moved to Orlando three years ago, when I decided to take Mrs. Burkes Into to Journalism class. I had always wanted to get involved earlier, but there wasn’t an intro class at my old high school and you had to be an upperclassmen to be on staff. After completing the Journalism I class, I knew right away I wanted to be apart of the 2009-2010 Legend Yearbook staff. I started out as a staffer, learning more and more about journalism with each deadline I did. I learned time management, responsibility and how the book is actually produced. Applications for the 2010-2011 Legend staff became available and I immediately knew I wanted to be in a leadership position. After helping Vivian Quattrone, 2009-2010 People Editor, doing the current people section, I knew that’s the position I wanted to take on. I got the position as 2010-2011 People Editor and it was one of the happiest days I have had in journalism. I went through a lot of one on one help with Burke, 40 headshots a day with the help of my mini-me Channa Harrington, and the support and encouragement from my EICs, Caley Brock and Allison Sloan. Without the help and support from my fellow staff, I wouldn’t have been able to do to it. We are a team, we are together, We are Legend.

self-analytical evaluation

2010-2011 has been the biggest impact on my journalism career. I’ve learned to be a leader, help others while helping/learning myself and learned the ins and outs about publications. With producing the People section, I learned how the pages were put together. It look a lot more work and time then anyone could know to place each faculty, senior and underclass picture. I learned more journalism ethics this year than any other year. I learned how easy it was to flip a picture when it was facing off the page, but how unethical it was to do so. I also learned how important signatures and correct identification was, to prove the person interviewed said what I wrote down. Correct identification was very important when an incident happened with two girls named Emily. On a “Gotcha”, it was written that she said something but when I went to get a headshot of her, she was confused on why she was getting a picture. I told her it was for a “Gotcha” and she didn’t remember saying anything. It was very important that we got the right Emily, because she would been in the yearbook saying something she did not say. My deadlines were different then everyone elses’ because I didn’t have normal profile pages in the section or other pages in the other sections. It took a little bit of time to get used to not having pages and work like I had the previous year, but it was much more rewarding to put together the whole section. To achieve the final product, I worked with the EICS and previous People Editor to get my section to be the best it could be. We all had to work together to be the best. Working together also helped us to achieve our advertising and sales goals. Most Saturdays we signed up to raise money towards our publications through Publix. We came together to raise money for our new Mac lab, Publications camp and our end of the year New York trip. Advertising and sales taught me we had to work at a team to achieve what we wanted. Dedication was the main aspect that held as all together. If we weren’t all dedicated, we would of fallen apart but instead we became closer and came together as a family. Skills in production, deadlines, teamwork, sales, journalism ethics and dedication will all be used every day in my future career. Being apart of a design company is my ultimate dream, so each skill will be very valuable.

High school baseball is the only varsity sport I enjoy watching, so getting the yearbook page was a huge goal of mine. After making a huge deal to get it, I knew I had to make it the best it could be to impress our current Sports editor and not let him down. I worked on the page with Tori Lai, academics editor, but we split the work to where the body copy was done by Tori Lai and pictures and captions were done by me. To make this page the best, I went to numerous games to take picture and get a feel of the season. It was not a difficult page to do, because the page was something I enjoyed. The page didn’t evolve that much from the beginning edit because we were given what our editor wanted and we worked around it. The only thing that really changed was which pictures were going in the COB’s in the middle. Other than that, the pictures and captions did not really change that much. I learned that you have to work with what is given to you, after completing the page. This page was my favorite page I’ve done and overall it came out great.

I picked the “Guess What page as my piece that could still use work because of how quickly it was done. There was an incident where there was a blank page at the end and I didn’t realize the page was supposed to be filled so the day before proofs we came up with a page with zoomed in pictures that students had to guess what the image was. The page was decided in one class period and done in another. I feel like if I had more time the page could have been something more interesting or better designed. It is one of the more plainer pages. It could have been improved by adding cooler graphics or doing something better with the way the pictures are set up.

This year I haven’t taken many pictures, so I had slim choice of what my favorite one was. Unlike how most really good pictures show someone showing great emotion or doing something really cool, but I like this picture because it shows a Boone high school landmark. I like the color in the picture and it is slightly off centered which is a good photo composition. The totem pole is the center of visual interest and the brave painting in the back carries on the Boone tradition in the picture. The totem pole, shadow from the pole, sidewalk line, and windows are all leading lines. The braves in the back show depth of field. When I look at the picture, the white and orange in the totem pole is what attracts me to the picture.

As a section editor, I was a great asset to the staff. Without me, either the People section wouldn’t have had an editor for the section or it would have not been me and the section would not have looked the way it did in the end. My commitment was showed each time I stayed after school, which during my deadlines were everyday. I did what I need to do to get all my headshots and interviews done. I did my best to be a positive person everyday and keep the staff motivated to do the best they can do. With me being an editor, I had the responsibility of guiding my staff members in the right direction and helping them the ethics of journalism.

Compared to last year, this year went pretty smooth. There was a few bumps in the road including documents getting deleted and the replacing of pictures quite a few times, but I feel like I handled them well. Maybe a little emotionally, but well. :) There was an incident where I finished placing all of the underclass pictures and got to the very last one whose name was “Unknown Unknown”. At the time I was on a strict deadline, so if his name would of started with an “A”, I would have started two weeks of work all over again. Thankfully it started with an “O”, so it wasn’t that much to replace. In the event of the situation, I did get upset but I kept my cool and my fellow editors kept me positive and were there for me to help incase of a huge problem. From this situation I learned things happen, mistakes happen and all you can do is keep going to make things better. If something happened similar to that in life, I would handle it the same way except not be as emotional. I would do whatever I could to fix the situation and move on.

At the midterm my goals included being more persistent on helping people that have my deadlines, meeting the newbies on a more personal level and to progress in my skills. From time to time I would be in my own little world, just focusing on my own work rather than my work plus the work of staffers with my pages as their deadline. I worked on the daydreaming weakness and focused more on helping others. By the end of the year I also feel like I know more of the “newbies” on a more personal level. I’m at the point with some of them that they will come to me with help with not only yearbook related work, but other classes as well. I’ve been more than a fellow staffer, but a genuine friend to them. Not only was I a friend to other staffers, but I also learned skills from them that I could not have learned on my own. I learned more InDesign and Photoshop skills that I didn’t know the first semester. Overall, my goals were met from the first semester.

Y22- This picture represents me because it is one of the pictures from the only page I did in my section. The page was for students to guess what the picture is at a zoomed in proportion. This memorial shows good photo composition including the rule of thirds by being off centered, the color of the plants are really sharp which makes the picture look good. Also, it’s another important landmark in the school that represents it. This is printed on page 245 in the book.

Y51- This piece represents me because it shows both of the two biggest aspects of my section. Mugs and quote pages/secondary coverage is half of my section, with profiles being the other half. It represents the People section and also represents all the what I did for my section all year. I also like this quote page the best because it has extra secondary coverage to give more emphasis on the page and what their answeres were. This is page 189 in the printed book.

Y22- This picture was never actually printed on the page, but I didn’t feel like any of the other pictures showed good photo composition so I chose this one to represent me. It’s not straight on so it shows another angle to the picture. It also shows leading lines in three different colors with the orange, grey from the concrete and the while. Like the other picture, the football stadium is an important place for the school, so seeing the words “Home of the Braves” at the top shows school spirit. Overall, I feel like the picture represents me as a student which represents the school.

From last year to this year, I had grown in publications a lot. My design techniques are more advanced and the design of my portfolio from last year to now has became more professional. Last year my portfolio has stretched pictures and a simple brush that made it look “kiddish” and not so professional. Now, I used advanced techniques with brushes but also kept my design simple enough for professional companies to appreciate my personality. I wouldn’t say the overall design of this years portfolio is more advanced because it wasn’t that hard to do, but it looks cleaner and sharper than last years. I used one brush this time but rotated the brush around the page to give a patterned effect, unlike last year where each page looked the same but changed colors from page to page. This years portfolio is a lot better compared to last years.
