May 16, 2014 Dear Mrs. Burke, William R. Boone Publications is full of accomplished and dedicated students that produce great material, which is why I would like to be considered for staff position on Hi-Lights. I am familiar with all of the programs needed to be a successful staffer. Programs like Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Bridge. I also know how to take quality photos and use hi-tech cameras. I am also experienced with working on a tight schedule for meeting deadlines, which illustrates my dedication and work ethic. I am capable of working through stressful environment to meet these deadlines as well. Using these Adobe programs comes easily to me since I have been working with them for the past two years and I look forward to using my skills for another year. I can successfully upload photos to the files and or pages they need to be placed in. My time management skills are also a key characteristic i posses for this position. If need be I will work day and night to meet deadline. I am sure the accompanying resume will help show my williness to do anything it takes to be apart of William R. Boone Hi-Lights again. I look forward to hearing from you and having a personal interview to better discuss my talents. Thank you for your time. Respectfully yours,

Jackson Crumbly

I got my start in journalism because my brother is a skilled writer and he inspired me to give it a try. I’m extremely glad he gave me the nudge I needed to take journalism one. Through this class I have met friends that will be my friends for the rest of my life. Also I learned skills I will use throughout my life. Of course I have learned things such as how to work indesign and photoshop, programs that will benefit me in the future. But more importantly I have learned dedication. If one is not dedicate he will not flourish in newspaper. Dedication to meet deadlines, wake up early on saturday morning to go to green-up, go to work days and much more. One can have dedication without also learning how to be responsible. Responsibility is key to success, along with responsibility comes time-management. These two skills may be the single most important thing high school has taught me. I have journalism to thank for this. All these skills will surely benefit me in my future college courses and eventually future career. I believe I was an asset to hilights this year by always being involved and, at times, leading discussion such as story ideas and angels. The staff could always count on my honest input on a story. Which, occasionally, caused arguments but always kept the ball rolling. I have had several heated discussions with fellow staffers about story ideas I did not agree with or think were interesting. Newspaper has taught me so much and I’m grateful I got the opportunity to experience a class as challenging as it is. I believe it has prepared me well for almost everything I will endure during my time in college.

My favorite piece that I wrote this year was the softball story in the march issue. I feel it had every trait of a great article. The players I interviewed gave me amazing quotable quotes, the angel was unique and interesting and really pulled readers in. The first draft of this story started off bland and unitriging. I had a typical angel and it did not really standout. After getting my story back from first deadline, with help from a fellow staff member, who played on the softball team, the story had a new look. With a new angel, the story was easy to write. Before I was able to find the creative angel for the story, It was difficult to write. I had to re interview players with questions. I also had to come into an hour early to interview the coach because that was the only time she could meet up with me. The finished product gave me a sense of pride because of all the work I had to put into it in the limited time I had because of my resubbed first draft. One of the things I liked the most about the piece was that it was not just about softball games, it was about the team as a whole and the special rituals they had together. I believe it is one of the best articles I have ever written.

I have grown tremendously over since last year in terms of design. Last year my portfolio’s design was less than stellar to say the least. I believe this year, in design, I stepped it up and improved greatly. But unfortunately, I also had a severe case of senioritis to close out the year. Last year I improved and finished strong at the end. But this year after christmas I lost my sense of motivation. Which, like I said in my self-analytical essay, is key to success in newspaper. But this a mistake I have realized and will not repeat in my future stages of life. Even with my slacker state of mind this year, I still do believe all elements of being a writer, designer and staff member improved. My writing as whole, since August 2012, has made extreme strides in the correct direction. I believe my worth as a staff improved greatly and will benefit me in my future jobs and goals.
