As a yearbook staff member on the Legend yearbook at Boone High School, I learned how to effectively navigate both InDesign and Photoshop, which is one of the requirements for the internship. I also have an interest in current trends and am an avid NYLON reader. Through yearbook, I was able to successfully build page layouts, complete interviews, take pictures, as well as write captions and body copy; all under a specified time limit. Preparing the yearly yearbook taught me how to manage my time efficiently to meet deadlines and to work with the pressure of last-minute changes. I have been passionate about page design ever since I learned basic design techniques in Journalism I and was able to further expand these techniques with the yearbook. Naturally, I am a very dedicated person when I set my mind to a task. Although I have attached my resume I am certain an interview would further allow me to show my commitment to this organization. Self-Analytical evaluation
I was started in journalism my freshman year. Before this, I had previously heard about the class and program from my sister, which led me to enroll and eventually join. Overall this year, I learned several skills that will aid me during my future. I learned the basics about journalism ethics and production skills, which I hope to improve further as I continue in the program. I won’t ever be able to look at a magazine or news article without immediately picking out the widows and critiquing the design. Along with the basics, I learned almost everything there is to know about Adobe products. Having no prior experience with even a Mac computer before, learning how to navigate InDesign and Photoshop in Journalism I and continuing that knowledge into yearbook was a very rewarding experience for me. Even the little thing’s like learning how to create just a triangle or how to download and use brushes on InDesign turned into the biggest successes for me. Before enrolling in Journalism I, I didn’t have the slightest clue in what direction I wanted to head in and what subject I wanted to major in. But in that class I was given a taste of design, and now I know that whatever I end up doing, I want design to be an element. Now, knowing how to operate the Adobe programs has already put me ahead of the curve. With the world becoming increasingly more technology-run, almost every job involving designing will require knowing how to navigate these programs. Along with learning the design elements, I was also introduced to another completely foreign topic to me: sales. I’ve never had any real job experience and this year I learned about what it takes to get others to buy your product and the importance of budgeting. Most importantly though, yearbook taught me about dedication and responsibility; I had to completely dedicate myself to not only my spreads but also the entire book. At certain points in the year, it felt as if I was living and breathing yearbook and overall, it’s highly satisfying knowing that what I’m learning now, what I previously earned, and what I will continue to learn will actually aid me in my future. That’s what makes this class and program so rewarding.
REFLECTION ONE My most significant piece was during deadline three when I covered community service. It wasn’t an easy topic to cover because the majority of community service events associated with Boone were also associated with Key club. I had to really branch out and ask around to find events to cover. My purpose of the page was to capture a variety of students volunteering throughout the community and to find their motivation for doing so as well. From the beginning, my story was more generalized but as it progressed and was altered, it became much more personal. The personal aspects of the story make it so much stronger too. I focused in on three students who all volunteer in very different ways, giving my story a variety of views. This deadline taught me the importance of adding personal touches to any story. The page was hard to start off at first, but once I started asking around and finding events, the spread ran along smoothly after that. Overall, my favorite part about the overall product was the pictures because they show a variety of students and places and really shaped the overall page.

REFLECTION TWO My piece that could use some improvement would be from deadline four, which was my Every Chair spread. The design of the page wasn’t created until very late in the deadline and being too similar to the previous year, had to be changed at the very last-minute. The design was plain and the only interesting part about it was the background, which was a panoramic of the classroom. If I could go back and change anything, it’d be the overall design and organization of the spread. I was proud of the way the stories came out. The final version of the stories were changed drastically from the first draft. But another thing I would change is the yellow dirty cob. There’s something off with it and every time I see the page, my eye immediately goes to it. Overall, I learned that designs should be done beforehand so if they do end up having to change, there’s still time to make it right. Also, I should have taken more initiative with getting my editor to finish the design.

This photo contains leading lines, repetition, has good rule of thirds, and fills the frame. Overall, it had the majority of the elements needed to take a good quality photo. But the reason this picture truly sticks out to me, along with all the elements, is how I had to take the photo. Even though it may not show to others how much work I had put into it behind the scenes where it wasn’t exactly comfortable for me to be lying down in the middle of a grocery store, and frankly just wasn’t that sanitary at all either, but I had a vision and a drive to make my page the best that it could be and I went for it. When I look at this photo, what mostly sticks out to me is the creative angles element and the good center of visual interest. Mostly, what I absolutely love in this picture is the angle of which it was taken. Instead of just seeing a girl looking down at a table working, I manipulated my body and the camera to let it be shown what she is working on along with still capturing her face. I’m proud of this photo because while it has both good depth of field and fills the frame, what mostly stands out to me is the lighting. I didn’t have much to work with, not able to use the flash, so it was a huge step up for me just learning how to control my camera in a dark lit room and I just find myself attracted to this photo. I love the color coming off his instrument, but mostly I’m attracted to the shadows across his face, which helped display more emotion across it, truly capturing the moment. I believe I was an asset to the 2012-2013 staff of Legend because I worked hard to meet all my deadlines and to completely dedicate myself to both the book and the publication. As a staffer, most of my responsibility came from my own deadlines. It was a requirement to meet all deadlines and by doing so, I became a great asset; I believe my real significance to the staff showed more through when I stepped up to help with responsibilities that weren’t necessarily mine. For example, on deadline four, when my page had to be completely redesigned and my editor was busy with a lot of other tasks, I stepped up to help design the spread. Also, whenever a staffer needed help, I always volunteered to help them whether it be with a headline, lead in, or getting an interview. I especially helped Taylor and Olivia, because I knew as editors, when they had deadlines to complete along with their editor duties, they’d always be overwhelmed. Sometimes I’d even stay after school to help Olivia with her proofs or fixing another staffers page. Overall, I think I really stepped up as a staffer this year by not only meeting all my deadlines but also doing more so than was asked of me, and it was those reasons why I believe I was a great asset and addition to the staff this year.
REFLECTION FIVE My most significant problem came from adjusting to whatever changes were thrown at me and learning to adapt to them. Several times, spreads would be changed or altered, especially at the lastminute. The first time it happened, I basically saw it as the end of the world, claiming it wasn’t fair for me to have to do all this extra work because something should have been fixed a long time ago. But eventually I realized that these situations are for the overall good to meet the whole publications purpose, which is to make the book, the best it could possibly be. After that, it was much easier learning how to adjust; I was able to gain a life lesson from that experience. Adaption is one of the main keys to success because when you’re making something like a yearbook, there are going to be errors on everyone’s part and there’s no point in blaming it on anyone else. The errors just have to be fixed; regardless of the amount of work and effort it’s going to take. Overall, I think I handled adapting fairly well. At first it was a struggle, but eventually I stopped complaining and just finished the deadlines, changes and all.
REFLECTION SIX My three goals were to stay ahead of deadline, offer to help more staffers and to become more involved in the design of my page. I believe I successfully met my second and third goal. I was able to branch out more to help other staffers, even the newspaper staffers on tasks like getting interviews and finding pictures. For example, when Brittany was struggling with all of her responsibilities as club editor, I helped her successfully work down her todo list to get everything done. Also during deadline seven, when she was having trouble with dirty cobs, I showed her the proper way to do it and helped her complete her cobs as well. Also during deadline seven, I really became involved with the design of my spread, meeting goal three. I had talked to Delaney beforehand and we decided to do a through the motions of a hurdler on the spread. While two of my goals were met, I think I could’ve improved on staying ahead of deadline. In the beginning of the year I was on top of all my deadlines and I planned on keeping it that way, but as it got towards the end of the year when my other classes were also piling on heavy amounts of work, I was usually behind. At the end of each deadline, I met it but usually very last-minute which caused me a lot of stress which is why I plan on carrying this goal on to next year a staffer, where I will hopefully be able to meet it then.
