NATALIE DISLA 7330 Windham Harbour Avenue Orlando, FL 32829 natalied.1921@gmail.com @nataliedisla 407-683-4501 Dear Mrs. Burke: Perhaps Hilights is looking for someone who has experience with InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and iMovie. If that’s the case, you should consider me for a position as a staffer. I would be an asset to the staff and be willing to assist others when needed. After being on staff for one year, I have gained knowledge and experience in journalism. I still have much room to grow as a journalist, but I can only do so if you would consider me for the position. Throughout my first year of newspaper, I have quickly adapted to the environment and absorbed the information needed to succeed on staff. I am always determined to meet deadlines and I have often stayed after school and during lunch to work on my deadlines. These qualities would only benefit your staff. I am aware that Hilights is looking for a way to get more students involved online and I have some creative ideas to help do so. I also know that the paper focuses on what a majority of students would be interested in reading. I appreciate you considering my application for a position on the Hilights staff, but I believe an interview would allow me to personally show you my qualities that would benefit your staff. Respectfully yours,
Natalie Disla

SELF-ANALYTICAL EVALUATION When I first read my elective selection sheet in the eighth grade and realized journalism was an option, I knew I was interested. The idea of a group of students putting in dedication and commitment for a nearly perfect final product fascinated me. I wanted to be a part of something as special as that. When I first joined journalism I thought I had my mind set on yearbook, mainly because I did not know much about newspaper then. Towards the end of the year, I was unsure whether I would have time to participate in such a time consuming club. Fortunately, Mrs. Burke introduced me to newspaper. I was hesitant at first, but now I know it is the club for me. The class was difficult for me in the beginning of the year because I was not used to the tasks I had to complete. The experience of selling ads for the first time was intimidating at first, but it has taught me determination because I never gave up. Nearly ten businesses turned me down, however in the end, I sold all of the ads I needed to sell to CFE. Before this year, my production skills were lacking because I only knew the basics when I took Journalism I. As the year progressed, so did my skills. For instance, I would not have been able to complete most of my weird southern state laws infographic on my own in the beginning of the year. This year, I have gained an adequate amount of experience in journalism. I have learned new tricks on Photoshop, such as forming patterns and using different tools to COB. I have also learned how to make my own designs on InDesign. My new design skills are demonstrated in this portfolio because I created the design on my own using InDesign and Illustrator. I have probably stayed after school more than once for each deadline. There would be days where I was extremely tired, but I would choose to stay after school and work on my deadlines instead of taking a nap or finishing my homework early. I even came in to work on a deadline the day before my AP European History exam which shows how much I am committed to being on staff. Staying after school and during lunch definitely helped me stay on deadlines. At times, it was difficult to juggle different deadlines, especially during softball season, but I still managed to meet deadline. All of these skills I have obtained while being on staff has made me an even stronger student and will help me in college and when I eventually get a job.
REFLECTION #1
I think my most significant piece for the publication this year was my story about living with diabetes. It was the first story I actually had to do a notable amount of research on. I liked this story because it tied three diabetics with different stories into one and provided readers with a background in diabetes and interesting statistics. This story took me the most amount of time to write; with countless edits and the addition of new insightful research. This story was a jump and my first story to be featured on the front page, so I wanted to make sure it was as well-written as it could possibly be.
