April 28, 2015 Renee Burke Head Advisor Legend Yearbook 1000 E Kaley St, Orlando, FL 32806 Dear Mrs. Burke, As a staffer, I feel that I have gained the experience and appreciation necessary to apply for a position as a staffer on the 2015-2016 Legend Yearbook staff and would like follow up with an interview at your earliest convenience. I have learned a lot throughout the year being on yearbook and would like to further my learning as a staffer on the 2015-2016 Legend Yearbook staff. As a staffer I have learned valuable skills regarding journalism including how to create a good design, how to take good pictures, and how to write an effective story. I would really appreciate an interview to inform you further of why I would like to be on staff next year. Over the year I have used many skills and mindsets in order to help with the yearbook’s progress. My dedication to the staff is a major factor considering all the hours that are put into the yearbook. My knowledge for basic design principles, body copy rules, and photography creativity I feel I am qualified to get a position on the Legend Yearbook staff next year. At my local church I was given a leadership position to run the alter servers during mass. This is a huge responsibility that I take very seriously and I was in trusted to be in charge a great deal of things, like assigning altar servers jobs, assisting the priest with the body of Christ, making sure that the altar servers do what they are supposed to and to prevent any accidents during mass. I feel that this leadership position show my dedication and ability to be responsible in a professional manner. I appreciate your consideration to put me on the 2015-2016 Legend Yearbook staff next year. I hope you will schedule an interview with me so that we can have a better discussion of why i should be given the position. Attached to this document is my resumé and qualifications for the job. Thank you again for your consideration I hope to hear back from you soon. Respectfully yours, Sarah Dusing Enclosed: resumé

Self-Analytical Evaluation
Self
Evaluation When I was a freshman I decided to look over my class electives that I could take. I asked my older sister Mary Catherine for her opinion on what electives I should avoid. That is when Mary Catherine advised me to take journalism because of how wonderful Mrs. Burke is and that you will be able to apply for yearbook once you took the class. I was intrigued by it and decided to take the class. This year was especially difficult for me in yearbook because I was unprepared for certain setbacks and due to those setbacks I made a lot of mistakes which jeopardized my position on the yearbook staff. With those mistakes I learned quite a lot of life lessons about deadlines, teamwork, dedication, and overcoming hardships that I will carry on using when working on projects, deadlines, and future job opportunities. Meeting deadlines was especially difficult for me this year though I did meet my first deadline I failed to meet several others which taught me a great lesson about staying on task. I learned that it is better to turn something in rather than nothing at all. Especially with deadline seven, even though my partner and I did not have all our pictures and caps ready to turn in we were still able to turn our body copy in so that we weren’t that far behind. I learned that I need to be more dedicated to meeting deadlines in the future especially if I plan on getting a job anytime in the future because my boss may be depending on me to get something done and I must show him that he can depend on me. Yearbook is a team effort; if one person slacks off and does not do what was asked someone else has to clean up their mess. I learned that very early this year and it was because I failed to do what was told. I learned that it is essential for there to be good teamwork because then nothing will get done. Communication is extremely important especially if you are behind and need someone to help you get farther along. During deadline five I worked with a partner and we decided that he will deal with the photos and captions and that I will deal with body copy, and half way through I got stuck on the body copy and got resubbed so my partner sat down with me and helped me with the body copy. I then learned how important it is to have teamwork because people can help you when you really need it and when in a professional environment I will need to show my cooperation with others to show my dedication. The most difficult thing I have had trouble with this year is showing my dedication to the publication. Though it seemed that I was not dedicated to the staff this year I really do feel that I can prove that I am dedicated. Early in Deadline two I had no pictures for my page but as soon as I got them I tried my hardest to create a design but with four different stories, seven pictures, and a mod I was having trouble fitting everything on the page. I stayed after school everyday until Mrs. Burke was leaving for several days trying to figure out a design. In the end I figured out a design with the help of Mrs. Burke. I feel in that regard that I was somewhat dedicated but obviously not enough. I learned that I need to be more dedicated if I want to continue being on staff next year. I realize that dedication is a major part to the publication and to any future jobs because without dedication nothing will get done. At the beginning of my sophomore year I was hospitalized for crohn’s disease and missed two weeks of school. During the summer I had to change the medication I was on due to an allergic reaction to the medicine I would have every time I took it. Since then I have been struggling with the disease which I feel was a big part of why I was doing so poorly this year. I didn’t overcome this hardship until towards the end of the year and by overcoming this challenge I feel I have changed as a person. I think that by overcoming hardships is what makes you a better person that is a lot stronger and helps you later in life. By overcoming hardships you furthering your work experience especially in a professional setting and I think by dealing with my hardship made me better in the future. On the yearbook staff this year I made a lot of contributions that have helped with the progression of the yearbook. I helped organize and run the club picture days early in the year. I also helped with the softball page by identifying people on the team as well as going to softball games to help people with their beats. I also attended multiple track meets even though it wasn’t by beat to help ensure that there was pictures for both the girls and boys track page. I have been an asset to the staff because I have helped out with multiple different activities that need to be done in order to get the book out in time. I hope that I can continue to be an asset to staff next year.
Reflections
Reflection One
During my deadline two I struggled to finish my page due to a lack of pictures and because of that the page wasn’t shipped and it was my responsibility to get that page turned in on time which I failed to do. It took me two months to finish the page and was a very long process which involved me hunting down people, asking Mrs. Burke to email a professional photography company in order to use a picture, spend countless hours designing a page, writing four complete body copies, going on multiple interviews and going to an ice hockey rink in order to take pictures for the page. In the end I was proud of the final product especially since it turned out so great after all that hard work done by myself and all the editors including Mrs. Burke. The design on the page changed a lot throughout the process of grading due to all the different stories that were going on the page. There was also a fast facts mod added to the page in order to have secondary coverage. The body copy definitely improved a lot through the process as well which I feel is a great accomplishment since I had to write a story about hula hooping. Overall a lot of things changed on the page and because of that the page looks fantastic. When I first was assigned this page I immediately started to work on my story planner and I began to ask people who I should get for alternative sports. Immediately I knew I was going to do four different profiles, one on senior Joseph Perez and junior Hailey Germain. I continued to ask people who I should cover for this page and asked for Mrs. Burke’s help to find people to cover. Mrs. Burke then found sophomore Nicholas Panfen and senior Kaitlin Renaud. So I began to interview them and ask for pictures from them which they did not fulfill as quickly as I hoped. I actually struggled tremendously with getting pictures because people failed to get the pictures to me in a timely manner. I actually had to go to an ice hockey rink that was 45 minutes away from my house to go take pictures of Nick Panfen playing hockey. I also had to visit and talk to Hailey Germain several different times to send me pictures. With Kaitlyn Renaud it was especially difficult to not only get pictures from her but good quotes as well. No matter what questions I asked her and how I phrased it her quotes did not do much to help me write the body copy. I also ended up having to ask Mrs. Burke to email Aly Photography to ask for permission to use a photo of Joseph Perez. I tried to turn my body copy in when I didn’t have a page because I didn’t have any pictures to create my design. But because my body copy looked so small I kept getting resub because the length was too short. It was difficult to write about hula hooping and I could not write a story long enough. So I struggled with pictures and my body copy. After all those difficulties I learned quite a few things. The first thing I learned was that it is better to turn in what you have rather then wait until you have everything. Because it will be faster and easier for the editors to grade if they don’t have to focus on more than one thing to grade. I also learned that when I am struggling with something I should ask for help rather than deal with it myself. This is important so that someone knows that you are trying to fix a problem and getting help to do that. I learned a lot about dedication as well and am glad to have had the experience because it made me realize how much I enjoy yearbook and why I joined yearbook in the first place and that is that yearbook gives me a reason to wake up in the morning.

Reflection Two
Y15. Sports Action Photo, 124 JAN. 23 - metro conference In the routine, all three stunt groups hit their heel stretch.
I really like the action in this photo as well as the sense of repetition as well. I was leaning down in a weird position because my zoom lens was so close that I had to get a little farther back to get the picture. I was also really nervous about taking pictures during the performance because for cheerleading you only get one chance to get the perfect picture and I was scared that my pictures wouldn’t turn out that great. But luckily the picture turned out to be really good. Y15. Sports Action Photo, 124 we’re all in this together. At the metro
conference competition, senior Tara Wolfinger leads the formation.

I really like this photo because of the girl’s face, it is such a great expression and I was nervous for these pictures as well because I was standing in the corner a bit because I wasn’t aloud to get in front of the crowd and the judges table was right in front and there was no room for me to take pictures. But in the end the pictures turned out to be really great and the expressions are really good as well.
Reflection Three
In my previous year of being on staff I feel I have grown tremendously. My design alone last year was very simple and showed nothing about me whereas this year I feel my portfolio shows tremendous growth and describes me greatly. I also believe that my ability to design pages, take good pictures and write body copy have all improved as well. I feel that my ability to write body copy well has improved tremendously. I struggled a lot last year with body copy especially with my wrestling page last year. But this year it greatly improved especially with my alternative sports body copies which took me a good deal of time to write. I also feel that my photography has improved as well considering that I have more pictures on other people’s pages this year. Last year I struggled taking pictures because I lacked the fundamental skills needed to take pictures. This year I took pictures of kiss the pig, cheerleading, as well as pictures for the magnet and academics page. Throughout last year I didn’t have to design any of my pages because editors did them for us. But this year everyone was in charge of designing their own pages so I was in charge of designing my own pages. Since I didn’t have much experience designing pages i feel that my designs aren’t that great. But none the less my design skills have greatly improved and I am able to remember basic design principles as well. During my second deadline this year I was having extreme difficulty with my design since I had to fit four body copies, seven pictures and a fast facts. But I was able to do it and the layout turned out great so I feel that I have greatly improved with designing pages. Last year I struggled with coming to school everyday because of my crohn’s disease issue. But this year I came to school almost every single day and I feel I have proven to be better since the disease showed up. I feel that I have gained a lot more responsible this year with having to make sure I take my medicine everyday, and other responsibilities that I have gained for example, I now have a leadership position at my church as night commander which is a great responsibility, I am also vice president of the fashion club at school, and I feel I have grown as a person through yearbook as well. Overall this year I have had the pleasure to be on the yearbook staff and have gained multiple skills, life lessons, and responsibilities and I have grown as a person too.
