May 11, 2015 Dear Caithleen K. Bode, With a modern layout, content geared towards youth, and an overwhelming atmosphere of class, Orlando Style Magazine is a publication I am interested in working for. I am specifically applying for a creative and editorial internship. I am internet savy, infused in pop culture, and have experience working on a web publication as well as a print one. I am excellent at working with people, am committed to producing quality work, and am eager to gain the experience that your company offers. Under your guidance I would be able grow as a writer and photographer, as your magazine deals heavily with media. I am fluent in American Sign Language and Spanish, and I am experienced in Photoshop and InDesign. From music to fashion, I feel I could bring insight to what the target demographic is interested in seeing. No matter what the position will entail, I will complete my tasks with precision and excitement. Although I feel I am qualified I realize I have much to learn, and I am excited at the prospect of doing it at Orlando Style.
Sincerely, Roberto Guevara
SELF-ANALYTICAL REFLECTION As a student, I was never interested in math or science. English and history were the classes I succeeded in, the were the classes I enjoyed. When consider a career, I knew that writing would be involved. In high school I considered the classes that would allow me to grow as a writer and I landed in journalism. Throughout the course, I was able to improve my grammar and my ability to write briefly - something I discovered while writing my Empowerment Club story. Getting my edits back I noticed that corrections of grammar were becoming less frequent, and the tight format of the writing was becoming more comfortable. Working on my Taylor Swift flow-chart I discovered how creative and free I could be. That piece also forced me to confront journalistic ethics as I wanted to rip photos off of google images, and alter certain graphics that I didn’t own. While working on my track story I had to deal with the pressures of deadlines. Pulling the story was not an option so I had to pull my act together, rush to get interviews, and pull together a coherent yet well-written story. Throughout the year, I was able to grow closer to my staff-members, something I wasn’t sure was actually going to happen. Being a part of that team was the only reason I was able to make it through the year as they were my support system and the ones who helped me finish my pages. As for my place in this staff I felt like I brought in a joyous atmosphere. I tried to become invested in the lives of my fellow staffers and I tried to support those who needed it. Journalism was an enemy I am happy I faced. It prepared me to for the real-world where deadlines are crucial, and quality work is vital. It made me a better writer, and for that I am thankful.
Reflection 1 I felt my Empower Club piece was the most significant one I have written this year. Although there are elements of it I wish I could have changed I was proud of the content. I was able to write a a feature story, that included news elements, and discussed social issues that I am interested in. Discussing feminism and social equality made the process of writing this story less difficult than all of the other ones. I was able to actually attend a meeting that enlightened me personally, and it forced me to delve deeper into the history of feminism which I enjoyed. I liked how the page ended up looking, especially the time-line on the side and the was proud of how my header ended up looking. Although this may not be my best written story, it is the one I feel displayed the most growth since I started.
N10. Sports Feauture “Track team seeks state title” May 8, 2015 pg 11 This track story is brief yet it encompasses all that the season was about - taking the atheletes to the state competition. I am proud of the photographs I took and I felt that it was well-written.
N13. General Feature “New club empowers students” November 7, 2014 pg 7 This feature discuss social issues of our time while mentionaing how a new student run club is challenging it. They story is informative yet it also shines a light on the students and why they feel, female empowerment is important.
N14. Entertainment Review “Heroes slay the small screen” March 13, 2015 pg 11 In this story, I took a critical look at the superhero genre on television. Referencing ratings, and student reactions students are given insight on the shows they should tune into. The look ahead at what new shows are premiering I feel also enhance the piece.
