I understand the company holds internships for aspiring advertising professionals that are well-versed in this field. Please accept my resume for your review and consideration for an internship position. As a three year member of the Legend yearbook at Boone High School, I feel that I am well qualified in the journalism field. I am well versed in Adobe programs such as InDesign and Illustrator, and I am certified in Photoshop CS6. I have used these programs to design spreads, advertisements and other projects and would enjoy witnessing the process of design for Tribal Worldwide. I understand the company is primarily digitally based, and my basic knowledge of creating websites can serve as the foundation of my improvement. I hope to learn more of what digital advertising provides that print cannot. My will to succeed drives me to put my heart into everything I do. As an intern, I would take the job seriously and complete every deadline to the best of my ability. To work in advertising, one must be very skilled with technology, and with my experience in yearbook the past three years, I could use my knowledge to succeed and improve even more. While the enclosed resume thoroughly describes my experience and accomplishments, an interview to discuss my further plans in this position would better display my attributes. I would appreciate to meet with you at a convenient time. Thank you for your review and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully yours,

T Y L A AN ICAL evaluation
My first encounter with journalism occurred freshman year, when I was placed in the Journalism I elective by my counselor. I enjoyed writing in middle school, so I figured that the class would be fun. I learned quickly that journalism is not simply writing. After the first few weeks of the class, I fell in love with the topic. Once we began the yearbook portion I knew how I could further my journalism studies: join staff. Throughout the past three years on staff, I’ve learned countless lessons regarding production skills, deadlines, teamwork, sales and advertising, journalism ethics, dedication, overcoming hardships and goal setting. Particularly this year, I’ve experienced many hardships threatening my goals, and my dedication was questioned more than once. These obstacles this year proved trying, but in the end only made the experience more rewarding in the end. This year around January and February, another student on campus hacked onto our server and deleted countless files as a “prank.” This was during my final deadline, and a specific, very important folder was deleted containing about 100 headshots in my section that were essential in order to ship my pages on time for deadline. Of course, this happened three days before this final deadline. With the help of other staffers and my advisor Mrs. Renee Burke, the headshots were all reshot, edited and placed in time for deadline. This taught me how to overcome hardships professionally. I couldn’t let my emotions and stress get to me, I could only face the task at hand and work to fix what happened as quickly as possible. Though this hardship threatened my deadline goals, I managed to meet every one of my deadlines. Deadlines are a huge part of publishing a yearbook. Besides fines, the consequences include
disappointing the staff and Mrs. Burke, and putting yourself further behind as the other deadlines come. The beginning of the year was rough and no one seemed to be meeting deadline. Half of my staffers made deadline, and though the others did not, I caught the pages up and went through the editing process numerous times to make the senior and faculty sections as perfect as possible. On the last day to submit pages, I stayed at school until about 7 p.m. to complete that deadline and send them off. Last year my editor in chief was very helpful and many of times did my proofs and perfected my pages for me. This year I learned what it was like to finish my section myself and meet every deadline. I had to manage my time and sacrifice many nights out with friends to do so. As a yearbook editor, I have to be extremely dedicated to the publication. As mentioned before, the hardships in meeting deadlines proved trying, but I made a commitment and had to stay dedicated. No matter how hard I wanted to give up and let someone else do the job, I couldn’t let myself because of how much I love the staff. I had to stay focused at the tasks at hand and make it to the finish line, and keeping that dedication made seeing the book for the first time that much sweeter. I believe I was an asset to the staff this year because of my experience. As one of four returning editors, I understood the process of editing and proofing pages a little more than the others, and could offer assistance. I could also help the new staff members, especially after my pages shipped because of my early deadlines. I have never been more committed to an organization as I am to yearbook, and I attribute that to my love of journalism, the fun loving staff and the wonderful advisor that kept me coming back.

C E T L F RE I ON one
Hands down, my most significant piece of work this year is the senior panoramic double page spread. It is the only spread without mugs that I designed, and it isn’t a conventional spread covering an organization. I not only designed it but actually completed the content as well, which isn’t as common among editors. I found this deadline particularly difficult, and not just because I waited until the last minute to start it. This spread is the only one that captures the entire class of 2014 and documents its year. I wanted to live up to years past, and create something that the students would love and can look back on. It wasn’t too difficult to design, as it is simply mods, but I wanted to choose the perfect mix to use to represent the senior class. The rough draft included a timeline, but because the deadline was so early in the year, it was tough to find enough
relevant information and include everything the senior class participates in. After deleting that part, I was stuck for a while on what to design, but then it finally came together at the last minute. Despite these obstacles, I think I chose the perfect mods for this page. In a generation of social media users, including Instagram and Twitter posts were a perfect way to allow the class to look back on what happened and how they were communicating this year. I also provided statistics from this year, along with a list of officers and the senior class dean. I think this spread provides so much information without making it all numbers. It is designed in a visually pleasing way, and displays the information in different formats throughout the spread. From what I have heard, this page received positive feedback, which makes me all the more proud of it.

Y34. People spread with mug photos: I am particularly proud of this profile because we rarely design people pages to go across a spread with mugs at the top. I want this to represent me because I think I brought an unconventional design to the book, and it flows nicely across the page.
Y35. People spread with mug photos multi-page presentation: I want this design portfolio to represent me because this is the best work I’ve done this year. I think they are visually pleasing and over all come together nicely as a cohesive people section.
Y36. People spreads without mug photos one spread: I am most proud of the senior panoramic spread. It was my one true deadline by myself and I think that it came out nicely, as it received positive feedback. It ties in a good combination of mods, and isn’t a traditional spread to document the senior class.

C E T L F RE I ON three
I have come a long way since joining staff my sophomore year. I knew nothing about design, and I struggled the most with learning how to be creative while presenting information effectively. I learned at the end of that year very little about design, as I was only a staffer and didn’t have the opportunity to create anything on the computer by myself until my portfolio at the end of the year. My design was simple and childish, using pastel colors and the same brush repeatedly. My designs within my portfolio that year are basic and lack mods. During my junior year, I was thrown in the deep end it seemed, and was so overwhelmed by designing spreads. I needed help constantly and felt like I wasn’t cut out to be an editor because I wasn’t as capable as the others. In the end, I think I developed a better eye for design and it proved so in my portfolio. It was again simple, but more sophisticated and used design elements current in
the trends of design at the time. My writing as well improved, because I was used to writing concise stories that relayed information clearly. This year was easier with designing because I finally understood the basic rules and techniques, and could now branch out and try more creative approaches. I did most of my designs by myself, and while I still learned throughout the year and have much more room to grow, I am proud of the level I reached. I still designed mods and spreads that were rejected many times and had endless edits to be made, but I think my worst designs this year were far better than my better ones in the past two years. In this portfolio, I tried to refrain from boxing in my text, and open up the pages more. I still kept it clean and simple because to me, less is more, and it reflects my simple personality. Overall, my quality of work has improved after each year of journalism class.

I am particularly proud of this photo because of its composition. There is a clear center of visual interest, and it shows action. There is also depth of field along with good lighting. I like this photo because you can clearly see her face, which is tough when shooting softball pitching.

p.15 Legend Spring Supplement Softball This photo is of a player practicing her swing before heading up to bat. It has good lighting, fills the frame and follows the rule of thirds. I think the depth of field makes this picture as visually pleasing as it is.
When shooting softball, a big goal is to get the ball in the photos. I accomplished this while shooting this play, and the photo came out clear with good photo composition. It displays depth of field, shows action and has a clear center of visual interest.
