May 16, 2014 Jeffrey L. Berry Director of Sales Daynerhall Marketing & Advertising 618 W. Maple Dr. Garrett, IN 46738 Dear Mr. Berry, The example your company sets is an inspiration for me and my work. To work under the company name is an opportunity I deeply wish to experience. I am applying for an internship this upcoming summer, so that I may not only expand my own skills, but contribute to the success of the company. As a member of multiple school societies such as the Band Leadership Team as well as a staffer of the Boone High school newspaper, I have developed my proficiency in teamwork, time management, and working with strangers. It is my understanding that a company as prestigious as yours would be looking for such an intern. I am aware that companies such as yours work to meet the needs of many. After many years of working with students in band, I understand that not everyone can be pleased. However, this does not mean that I will settle for mediocrity. During my time at Boone High School I have made many personal sacrifices to produce quality work, such as missing family events, or staying after school to complete an assignment. I assure you that you will find very few people more dedicated to excellence. Thank you for taking the time to review my application. Attached is a detailed resume to further elucidate my qualifications for the position. I look forward to hearing back from you, and I hope that we can schedule an interview. I very much look forward to hearing back from you soon. Respectfully,

Victor Komives Enclosed: resume

SELF EVALUATION Over the course of this year, I have learned a great deal about many different skills. As this was my second year on the Boone Band Leadership Team, I have increased my knowledge and abilities in leading others toward a common goal. As a first-time staff member of the school newspaper, I developed a much greater sense of responsibility, as well as skills such as working within a group setting, becoming confident when talking with people I may not necessarily know, and understanding the importance of meeting deadlines. Working on the newspaper has provided me with experiences that few others in high school can match. This year I have also learned a great about myself, the areas that I am strongest in, as well as the areas where I lack confidence. I’ve demonstrated my design abilities multiple times, and I’ve also grown in my ability to produce quality writing. In November I was thrown into many situations that were far outside my comfort zone. I was tasked with writing an opinion piece on the issues faced in Syria, as well as a feature story on students asking them a question that they would have to respond to in ten words. The latter of these stories was very stressful for me, as I quickly had to gather interviews with 10 students, as well as make sure that students on campus were represented equally. I took time out of lunch on multiple occasions just to hassle students over what their biggest fear was. For the remainder of the year, I continued to grow, both in writing and designing. In November, I chose to design a story on ObamaCare and the effect it would have on the U.S. population. I learned the importance of gathering credible information, as well as further expanding my talents on programs such as InDesign and Illustrator. In December, the team decided to write a story on the Common Core Education Initiative. I gladly took the story, not knowing what a challenge it would turn into. Between trying to schedule interviews with people such as school board member Rich Roach and managing the dry research that was presented to me, I quickly fell behind. The story was saved in the end only because of my advisor, but I vouched never to fall that far behind again. For the final three issues of the newspaper, I chose to be very careful in what stories I would pick. I had a blast both designing and writing the editorial on genetically modified crops; in March, I learned about writing compelling sports stories both for print and web. I took the May issue calmly, and chose subjects in which I had prior knowledge, music and majors. I once again enjoyed designing the pages, and this time with a strong understanding of the tools available to me. This year has been an… enlightening year for me. I’ve have the wonderful opportunity of being able to work with other likeminded, responsible, and caring students, and to challenge myself like never before.

Reflection 1 As it was my first story on the staff, the opinion piece on Syria was perhaps my most significant. I went into the story knowing very little about the writing style that was so iconic of Hilights. I learned a lot about writing impersonally -- a style that I thought at first to be strange, as I had become very used to trying to talk to the reader -- and quickly learned the importance of not doing so. Overall, I had a lot of fun just writing the story and working with Sam Holleman despite our differing opinions on the subject matter.

R eflection 2 The infographic that I designed in November was on ObamaCare and its affect on citizens. This story alone would set the tone for all design that came from me for the rest of the year. I fell in love with Illustrator, and I enjoyed learning the ins and outs of the program. It was without a doubt my most rewarding relationship of the year. Above all, the story taught me the importance of research. I was the first major story where research gathering was not an option.

W ho am I?

My ideologies are in many cases irrelevant. I have grown to accept that. However, I will never give up what makes my ideologies mine. I hope that one day, whether I am alive or dead, the world will know true peace.
