KATIEMARSHALL06@GMAIL.COM - KATHRYNEMARSHALL.WORDPRESS.COM May 6, 2016 Dean Marshall Manager & Construction Director Venture Enterprises 1316 E Michigan St. Orlando, FL 32806 Dear Mr. Marshall: According to the Orlando Business Journal, your company has grown 20% in the past year and I would like to work for a successful company such as Venture Enterprises. It would also be a great honor to gain experience from such a strong leader in our community, and I would like to apply for the advertising manager position in your office because I feel I could make a positive impact on your company. I understand that project deadlines are very important to you and that if you do not meet a deadline it costs you not only time, but money. Being on yearbook staff at my school has taught me that I have to make many sacrifices and go out of my way to reach my goals. It has also taught me time management skills, the ability to work as a team and effective communication skills. Creating a yearbook, I have plenty experience with other people and managing multiple tasks at once. I have written content for a certain topic, created and conducted interviews for many people and have become proficient in Adobe applications. My experience level will make me an ideal staff member in your company because it will assist you with the overall operating and marketing aspects of your company. Thank you for considering me for the advertising manager position. I will contact you on Monday to assure you have received my resume and check if you have any questions. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me anytime. Respectfully Yours, Kathryn Marshall

VALUATION

SELF

From a sophomore to a senior, I have widened my abilities not only on the computer but with photography. When I first started on staff, I barely even knew what the manual setting was on the camera, I certainly couldn't comfortably go to an event by myself and shoot and I didn't have much leadership skill. Over time, though, I have learned not only from Mrs. Burke but with hands-on experience. After taking interest in photography, because everyone has their "thing" in yearbook, I slowly learned how to manually set a camera and became more comfortable with taking photos. When I did become more comfortable with the camera I was able to get some great shots, allowing me to become the photography editor of the yearbook. First I started as a junior and got a feel for the position and was lucky enough to take on the position a second time as a senior. This two year term, if you will, gave me the opportunity to grow as a photographer and develop leadership skills. As a junior editor I was very new to the whole "editor" thing. I didn't realize how many people looked up to you and depended on you for help. As the first year went on, I learned and got used to taking charge and actually making a decision for someone else. Now, as a senior, I don't hesitate. I'll either tell someone I like it or I don't, and they listen. Before yearbook, having pressure like that would scare me but being an editor has really shaped the way I handle things. Being the photo editor for two years has also allowed me to really love taking pictures and feel more comfortable at events. When I used to go to events, I would focus on what is right in front of me and just shoot that the whole time. Now, at any event I'm at, I will look around and take pictures of anything that is going on. For example, at a football game some people just take pictures of the game and that is it, and I would if it were me as a sophomore or junior. But now, I go take pictures of the band dancing, the rowdy crowd cheering, even the people up against the gate getting rowdy. How I look at it is, "If someone wasn't here, what would I need to take pictures of so they would get the whole experience to make them feel like they were here?". Another important thing that yearbook has taught me is how to manage my time. Yes, I am your typical teen that slacks off on work every now and then but yearbook has taught me how crucial it is to not be that. Having deadlines almost every month, and having little deadlines in between, has really showed me how to space out my work that way I'm not cramming it all at once before the time it's due. One last, and not least, skill that yearbook has given me a chance to learn is balance. Nothing is more important than balancing all you have so that you aren't stressed all the time. Sophomore year I would take on too much yearbook and not enough homework, and vice versa, but being on staff/an editor, I grew to learn how to do one thing at a time and get stuff done efficiently.

ONE

REFLECTION

The piece that I choose for my most significant piece in the 20I6 Legend is my deadline three, marching band, with Tyler Rispoli. When I first found out that I was going to be put on this page, I was hesitant because I didn't know much about marching band. But, I figured since we had Elena Berisha, a drum major, in yearbook I could just ask her any questions I had. This page was my favorite page that I worked on in the book, for the sole reason that it looks the best. Tyler and I both find more success with taking pictures than anything else so the photography on the page rocks. We both went to the band competition, an event that we both has never shot before so we were nervous, but the lighting ended up being perfect and we were able to get some amazing shots. Although, we did think about not going to the competition since it was so late in the deadline, but we were so thankful we did. After all, three of the pictures on the page are on it, one being the dominant. Once we had all of our pictures, the rest of the deadline wasn't difficult. Thankfully, everyone we wanted to interview was there at school the day we needed them to be and not only that, but they were good interviews which made for good quotes. Body copy, though, was a little bit of a struggle. We wrote about the band's show "Box", and not only was it new to us but it was new to the band members and director. We wanted to make sure to explain this new abstract show, unlike anything they have ever done before, so that everyone would be able to understand it. We fell behind in body copy at copy editor, of course, but we were able to pull it out and get majors into Burke early, too. At first, I didn't know much about marching band and I didn't think I would learn as much as I did. I didn't know how awesome our band is and how many awards they've gotten. This made them just so much more easy to write about. Just like us yearbook kids, they have a huge passion for what they are doing and love devoting their time to band. After realizing this, it made Tyler and I want to make the page that much better, because we knew how much they deserved it. In the end, I think we did succeed. The headline is one of my favorite elements of the page, because not only is it a play on the "Box" but it literally represents the band show this year. They did something new and out of their comfort zone, outside of their "box." The dominant photo, also, really catches my eye. You can tell that Kurt Callebretta, the main focus of the image, is intensely playing his instrument and is really focused on what he's doing. The contrasting colors of the uniforms and their feathers on their hats also adds to the overall composition of the image, it's my favorite part of the photo. All in all, this page was not only one of the less difficult ones but it's also the best one that I worked on for a whole deadline. I was very happy that Tyler and I could provide and create this for the Sound of the Braves, as they deserve it.

TWO

YI9 FEATURE PHOTO, SCREAM AND SHOUT. I want this photo to represent me because I believe it shows my growth as a photographer. Typically when I used to be at events, I would focus on the event that is happening in front of me and that is all. When I was at the senior assembly, this is not the action that was taking place in front of me. This was actually the students cheering on our new principal. I would have never gotten this shot if I didn't turn around.

YI9 FEATURE PHOTO, PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC. I want this photo to represent me because the contrast of color and the amount of focus on the subject's face makes the picture visually appealing. I shot this at a band competition and the band performed at around golden hour so it also represents my ability to change the camera's settings to make the picture clear, not too bright or dark and not grainy.

YI9 FEATURE PHOTO, MAKE IT RAIN. I want this photo to represent me because it also shows my ability to work with the manual settings on the camera. It was very bright outside and in order to get this shot and get all of the drips of water in it I needed to be able to manipulate ISO, shutter speed, f-stop and even the focus. No one could have gotten this shot if they were in the AUTO setting on the camera.
