Dean Marshall Manager & Construction Director Venture Enterprises 1316 E Michigan St. Orlando, FL 32806 Dear Mr. Marshall: According to the Orlando Business Journal, your company has grown 20% in the past year and I would like to work for a successful company such as Venture Enterprises. It would also be a great honor to gain experience from such a strong leader in our community, and I would like to apply for the advertising manager position in your office because I feel I could make a positive impact on your company. I understand that project deadlines are very important to you and that if you do not meet a deadline it costs you not only time, but money. Being on yearbook staff at my school has taught me that I have to make many sacrifices and go out of my way to reach my goals. It has also taught me time management skills, the ability to work as a team and effective communication skills. Creating a yearbook, I have plenty experience with other people and managing multiple tasks at once. I have written content for a certain topic, created and conducted interviews for many people and have become proficient in Adobe applications. My experience level will make me an ideal staff member in your company because it will assist you with the overall operating and marketing aspects of your company. Thank you for considering me for the advertising manager position. I will contact you on Monday to assure you have received my resume and check if you have any questions. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me anytime. Respectfully Yours, Kathryn Marshall

My mind had never thought of ever going near the journalism field when I was younger. To me, it seemed too complicated and I didn’t realize how broad journalism actually reached. So, when we were picking our electives in the eighth grade, I didn’t have enough to fill my blanks. Honestly, I had my mind made up on the first three and just assumed I would be put in all of them. But, we were told to fill them all up. So, I considered the thought that I would enjoy journalism, so I put it as my fourth choice. I really didn’t think much of it. But then, on the first day of high school when I received my schedule, I saw Journalism I on my paper. I was very caught off guard, but I’m not the type of person to instantly be against something so I just thought maybe I would give it a shot instead of just having a closed mind about it. After the first day of class, my mind was made up. I instantly loved Mrs. Burke not only as a teacher, but as an advisor. She seemed so professional to me, you could tell she really knew what she was doing and that she had a lot of experience. I found myself looking forward to second period Journalism I more than any other class in the day. After going through the class and becoming more efficient in the computer and the programs we were using, I instantly fell in love with yearbook. The whole idea of capturing a school year in writing and photography, especially when people will look back on it in 10-20 years, made me happy. Even after my first year on staff, my skills got 100 times better. But this year, they went even further. I learned design tricks, how to improve my writing and how to even manipulate a camera to do what I want. I also created a better understanding of how vital teamwork is to creating a publication. There were many instances to when someone would need a head shot, action pictures taken or something COBbed but they already had a lot on their plate so I would just get it done for them in my spare time. It seems like little silly things but when you have a lot of little silly things to do, it becomes to be too much, and that’s where I stepped in. In order to get things done and get them done on time, I needed to be very focused. Whenever I was in class and I knew I had a lot to do, I tried to not slack off and keep busy. This kind of dedication worked for me, because when I knew I needed to get something done, it got done. Since I do want to go into advertising/media design, a field that requires a lot of teamwork and dedication, I will know exactly how to execute. I will know how to handle situations under pressure and how to properly work with people to get things done, and to get them done fast. I felt I was an asset to Legend because I managed the photography in the book, graded photo days and posted photo galleries. All of which seem like small jobs, but, if the job were given to any other editor, it would be very hard to manage on top of everything else.

I chose the baseball page as my most significant piece this year, and I have many reasons why. First, I feel it was my most successful piece. Taylor and I went into the deadline knowing we wanted to kill it so we were determined. I took pictures a couple weeks in advance, and another time just because we felt limited on our options and wanted a better variety. All of the photos on the page ended up being mine, so that’s another thing I’m very proud of as well. Second, this page was my most changed page out of all the ones I worked on this year. It started out that the page had a vertical dominant picture, which was a great picture. But, the dominant ended up being a horizontal picture, with a completely different person in it and a completely new design. Which meant a new interview, re-cropping and renaming all pictures. This does not seem like a lot, but it really took time. Time cut out of the deadline we didn’t have. Taylor and I were very distraught, because we felt really confident in the very beginning but then we were terribly behind. So we immediately realized that we needed to stay after school and work as efficient as possible. We stayed and worked as much as we were able to, and made the deadline on time. I definitely learned the vitality of staying after school that deadline. Third, I am the most happy with the finished product. We had a rough time trying to get all of the pictures we wanted on the page following all design rules and making the page look pleasing. But, when we finally got it figured out, it looked great. My favorite and best type of photography is action, so my pictures were quality. And with the pictures being good quality, it helped the aesthetic. Last year, I did baseball as well and also found it my best piece. I think the page grew from last year in both writing and photography, I had a more variety of events going on in the pictures (batting, pitching, sliding, etc.). Between my pictures and my contribution to all the copy, I find this my best piece in the publication.

DM27. I think that this photo has the ability to show a story, especially with the emotion on the girls face. It shows the emphasis on her environment, is cropped properly and has sharp quality.

Y15. This photo has great Y18. This photo also shows action with the drum sticks frozen mid air, showing he is drumming the drum. Also, the photo has great depth of field with the drum out of focus in the front of the picture and his face in focus in the back. The picture also shows him in his environment, with his football jersey and all.

action and her face is in sharp focus with great tonal quality. She also has great emotion and action on her face.

My portfolio this year is an exceptional step up from this year. Last year, my portfolio was very simple and had simple design elements that weren’t complicated to do. This year, not only did I advance my design skills but I included photography in it. I learned how to put photography inside of the text, glyphs and little design tricks to make designing easier (quick keys and a master document). Not only has the aesthetic of my portfolio gotten better, but my content has as well. My clips have shown an improvement in that the photography in my pages are better than last years and the writing improved as well. For example, my baseball page from this year improved from last year in that the variety of pictures was bigger than last years. My non-sports pages are much more physically pleasing, like the Magnet/Academies page could’ve looked boring because Magnet/Academies isn’t the most interesting topic, but it wasn’t. The page actually had some cool pictures in it and showed the overall topic well. Also, the success of all my deadlines from this year has grown from last. I made all of my deadlines this year. Last year, I didn’t make them all. So, my clips have improved in quality from last year’s portfolio as well. After two years on staff and looking at inspiration, my portfolio has changed for the better. I’ve also grown as a staffer just by taking on more responsibility and knowing how to handle it all. As the photo editor, I had responsibilities like grading photo days and photo galleries and picking pictures for pages. With all of this, and a deadline it was hard to juggle. But after this year, I learned how to be more focused and take on the responsibility that the job entailed. This skill has helped me with school work and will help me for the rest of my life, especially with a job in the real world.
